    Notes: Transformation of dependent variables as, for example, the Kirchhoff transformation, is a classical tool for solving nonlinear partial differential equations. This approach is used here in connection with the finite element method and explained first in case of nonlinear heat conduction problems without phase change. The main applications of the method given in the paper concern a nonlinear degenerate parabolic equation for fluid flow through a porous medium and Stefan (moving boundary) problems.

    Notes: Fourier analysis of numerical accuracy has traditionally concentrated on the propagation behaviour of various methods. When systems of equations in more than one unknown are involved, analysis of propagation accuracy alone is shown to be incomplete. A distribution factor is introduced to complement the Fourier analysis in these cases, and application of the concept to two problems commonly encountered in the water resources field is demonstrated. The distribution factor is shown to provide important information which cannot be obtained from the customary analysis of propagation accuracy.

    Notes: Efficient solution of boundary value problems for time-dependent inelastic deformation in metallic structures is of great practical importance. These problems are generally solved by finite element methods and separate descriptions for time-independent plasticity and time-dependent creep are normally used. The boundary-integral equation method was recently applied for the first time to such problems. This paper presents a very efficient numerical implementation of the method with a linear description of the relevant variables over each boundary element and a newly developed Euler-type time-integration scheme with automatic time-step control for time integration. Numerical results for plates in plane stress with and without cutouts, under different loading histories, are presented. A combined creep-plasticity constitutive theory with state variables is used to model material behaviour. The results are more accurate and are obtained with much less computational effort compared to a previous attempt with an uniform description of variables over each boundary element and a predictor-corrector scheme for time integration. The computer program developed is quite general and can handle plane stress problems for plates of arbitrary shapes subjected to arbitrary time-histories of loadings. The numerical results presented in the paper are for certain illustrative problems.

    Notes: A finite element program capable of analysing finite plane strain deformations of incompressible rubberlike (Mooney-Rivlin) materials has been developed. Two problems, namely a long wall loaded uniformly in two directions and a thick-wall cylindrical pressure vessel loaded internally, have been solved. The computed values of displacements, strains, stresses and hydrostatic pressure agree very closely with their values obtained analytically.

    Notes: Several computer codes have incorporated the ‘overlay’ material models: the volume element, which is characteristic of the material, is composed of sub-elements with different kinematic hardening, perfectly plastic or even viscoplastic flow rules and different elastic properties, these sub-elements exhibiting all, however, the same total strain.1,2In this paper it is demonstrated how the simple mathematical framework we first proposed for elastic-plastic structures with kinematic hardening material,3 and we extended to some elastic viscoplastic ones,4 can easily be applied to these particular ‘overlay’ materials.One of the interesting advantages of this approach is a straightforward analysis of structural response under cyclic loadings by applying the linear elastic analysis.

    Notes: A numerical Laplace transform inversion technique is described, which is a modification of the inversion method using an exponential series representation. By adding an auxiliary function and using Erdélyi's inversion formula, the proposed technique provides the inverse approximation with improved accuracy near t = 0.     Notes: The post-buckling behaviour of a cantilever column of variable moment of inertia with tip load is studied by means of a simple numerical iterative scheme. The governing equation of equilibrium is formulated using the axial and transverse displacement quantities, and applying linear constitutive and nonlinear kinematic relations. Numerical results obtained by numerical iterative procedure are presented in the form of curves showing the relation between non-dimensional tip-deflection and non-dimensional load for different values of shear correction factors and taper ratios.

    Notes: Hybrid elements for the representation of elastic media are based upon extended variational principle. In the discretization process the hybrid deformation model requires an expansion of the displacement field as well as of the Lagrange multipliers at the boundary. Using an extension of the common shape function concept, these hybrid elements can be reduced to the basis of the simple minimum principle of potential energy with only one expansion of the displacements. An application to plate elements is given and a discussion about some consequences of the approach.

    Notes: A quadratic method is presented for solving the eigenvalue problem of a structural system having a large number of degrees-of-freedom. The eigenproblem is reduced to a smaller problem by condensing the system stiffness and mass using Guyan reduction. Application of a set of corrective displacements to the reduced system subsequently leads to an eigenproblem of quadratic form involving an additional mass term. To obtain the solution to the reduced problem, inverse iteration with spectrum shifts based on the eigenvalues of the Guyan problem is used. The resulting eigenvalues and mode shapes represent a corrected Guyan approximation to the solution of the unreduced system. In addition, it is shown that the amount of improvement over the Guyan solution can be approximated by employing a first-order error analysis procedure. Numerical examples of vibrations of a bar, a beam and a plate demonstrate that the solutions obtained from the quadratic reduction procedure are very accurate and require relatively little additional computational effort in comparison with the solutions of the corresponding linear eigen-problem. The relationship of the present method to that proposed by Przemieniecki is illustrated by an example.

    Notes: For the case of free edges which are loaded, follower forces remaining normal to the middle surface of a shell throughout the deformation history do not have a load potential. In finite element analysis, this results in an unsymmetric pressure stiffness matrix. Depending on the structure of the available computer program, implementation of an equation solver permitting solution of unsymmetric simultaneous systems of algebraic equations may be a tedious task. This explains the significance of the topic of symmetricability of pressure stiffness matrices, turning out to be of special importance in the case of static buckling under the assumption of a linear prebuckling path.At first, incremental equations for tracing the nonlinear load-displacement path are derived. Thereafter, the buckling condition is deduced. Then, it is demonstrated that symmetrization of the pressure stiffness matrix is admissible if the so-obtained ‘buckling pressure’ differs ‘very little’ from the ‘buckling pressure’ resulting from an alternative symmetric ‘buckling matrix’, as is shown to be the case for a simply supported cylindrical shell with a free upper edge, subjected to hydrostatic external pressure. The alternative symmetric ‘buckling matrix’ is a consequence of deleting the virtual work term, causing the unsymmetry of the pressure stiffness matrix, in the expression for the external virtual work. A mechanical interpretation of this virtual work term is given. It is shown to be equal to the difference of virtual work of the original pressure load and of a ‘substitute pressure-field’, of the form of a Fourier series of the former. This explains why, normally, the buckling coefficient resulting from the ‘substitute pressure-field’ represents a good approximation to the buckling coefficient stemming from the original pressure load.

    Notes: The two-dimensional Poisson equation is solved by the finite element method which uses rectangular elements and the bilinear shape function. Two kinds of weighting functions are employed, which correspond to the Galerkin method and the control-volume method. The results for three test problems, for which exact analytical solutions are available, show that the control-volume method leads to errors that are about one-half of the errors given by the Galerkin method. Incidentally, the five-point finite difference method is found to give errors which are nearly equal to those for the Galerkin method.

    Notes: A method is presented for solving field problems using a finite element formulation, to be executed with the aid of a micro-computer. In order to reduce the requirements regarding memory space, the coefficients of the matrix defining the system of equations are not stored, but calculated when they are needed, in a modification of the usual finite element procedure. The method is applicable to all problems for which Gauss-Seidel iteration converges, and can handle problems involving more than 100 degrees-of-freedom on a computer with 8,000 bytes memory. Computing time may run up to several minutes per cycle of iteration, but on a small, personal computer, this is still acceptable.

    Notes: Geometric programming is a powerful technique and its application to mechanism synthesis has not been fully explored. In this paper, slider-crank mechanism is chosen since the objective function consists of a large number of terms while there are only two design variables. Thus the degree of difficulty is more and does not lend itself to easy application of the geometric programming. Here, modification of the objective function is suggested so that the degree of difficulty reduces to zero even when the working space constraint is imposed. This results in a near optimum solution. Application of signomial geometric programming is illustrated through a numerical example.

    Notes: Finite elements with polynomial interpolation functions of a degree higher than 2 are used comparatively little on large FEM systems, except in shell elements. However, the author has had several years' experience in the use of the so-called ‘isoparametric, reduced Hermitian element’,4 Which has behaved excellently in an industrial as well as an educational environment. The reason for the interest in the Hermitian concept is that the overcompatibility of the element reduces the number of unknowns, the solution time and the discontinuities in stresses between elements.Explicit formulae for the family of interpolation polynomials of order q and degree p = 2q + 1 are given and hierarchical Hermite elements are introduced. The families of Hermite and serendipity elements are isomorphic and the latter may thus be extended to arbitrary high order.For some problems the equidistant node configuration in Lagrange elements of degree 3 and higher is not optimal with respect to smoothness, and a new type of element, the ‘Lobatto element’, is introduced.The methods consistently produce results of an accuracy which is above the requirements of usual engineering applications, but in graphics smoothness of curves is important for a convincing representation. The methods are of particular interest in industries working with structures composed of almost linear materials with well-known properties.

    Notes: The identification (or ‘calibration’ or ‘inverse’) problem with in this paper, can be outlined as follows. The ‘real system’ is a deep rock formation which can be regarded as isotropic and elastoplastic. A mathematical-numerical model, intended for the analysis of its response to excavations, rests on the assumption of an elastic-perfectly plastic Mohr-Coulomb constitutive law and of a homogeneous isotropic initial (in situ) stress state. The values of cohesion, friction angle and initial stress to be introduced in this model are identified by minimizing a measure of the discrepancy (error) between theoretical and experimental relationship (pressure vs. average diameter increase), concerning a standard pressure tunnel test carried out well inside the nonlinear range. For the error minimization process, two very general ‘search techniques’ are adopted and discussed from the computational standpoint: the flexible polyhedron (modified simplex) strategy and the alternating variable strategy in the Rosenbrock version. Both are found to be adequate for solving this inverse problem, when the mathematical model has to be use as a ‘black box’ in a purely numerical identification process.

    Notes: This paper is concerned with the mechanics and computation of the performance of a high energy chemical laser of the HF type. The analysis requires solving the-viscous, compressible supersonic flow equations which are coupled to the chemical and optical characteristics of the flowing gas media. A finite element method is chosen for performing the computation.The physical system simulated in the work consists of the supersonic mixing of the two flows; one flow consists of hydrogen gas where as the second flow is rich in fluorine gas. Perpendicular to the flow, an optical cavity provides for reflection and amplification of radiation characteristic of the output of the HF laser system.The HF system achieves a population inversion of the HF molecule as a result of the chemical reaction between H2 and F. This reaction also provides heat which couples with the fluid mechanics as an influence on the flow field.This paper will discuss the nonlinear nature of the problem, will present the finite element method used to solve the problem, and will compare results with others who have used finite difference methods for solution.

This example makes it easier to identify the cause of phase speed error, either due to linear or non-linear processes, and furthermore, to find a satisfactory scheme for time integration. The numerical schemes compared include: Arakawa Jacobian,1 Arakawa-Matsuno scheme, Galerkin finite element, Lax-Wendroff, leap-frog, and Crank-Nicholson. The effect of a variational adjustment (see Sasaki16) is also studied. Computational time, RMS errors in stream function and vorticity, and the conservation of the mean kinetic energy and enstrophy are compared at the end of 120 (one period) and 240 (two periods) time steps. The study indicates that the numerical scheme that employs finite elements in space (same as Arakawa Jacobian) and Crank-Nicholson in time is the most accurate among the schemes studied.

    Notes: A simple, efficient finite element method has been presented for the solution of a variety of scalar field problems in two dimensions. It is based on the mapping of the physical problem domain into an ‘image’ domain in the w-plane. The governing equation(s) and the boundary conditions in the physical plane are also appropriately transformed into the w-plane. The processes of standard finite element analysis are then implemented to obtain a solution in the w-plane.The method has been explained in detail, with illustrative examples where appropriate; it has several important advantages over the standard finite element method, particularly for the solution of infinite or semi-infinite domain problems. The method has been demonstrated to be simple, efficient, economical and potentially capable of dealing with a large repartoire of two-dimensional problems, including non-homogeneity, nonlinearity, etc.

    Notes: The notion of thermodynamic consistency of a finite difference scheme is introduced in connection with steady compressible flow simulation. This concept requires that the finite difference scheme must lead to solutions which are consistent with the Second Law of Thermodynamics, whatever the grid sizes employed. Thus, in addition to the usual consistency with the conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy, the solutions of the finite difference equations must satisfy thermodynamic restrictions. The scheme proposed by Singhal and Spalding for the computation of plane, isentropic flow is generalized in a thermodynamically consistent way to handle inviscid, adiabatic but non-isentropic plane flow. Numerical solutions are obtained for a model problem using both the original and the extended methods. The results are compared with analytical predictions of shock-expansion theory. The effectiveness and the thermodynamic consistency of the new formulation is demonstrated.

    Notes: Both the central and upwind difference schemes are commonaly employed to solve the Navier-Stokes equations governing the two-dimensional laminar flow of an incompressible laminar flow of an incompressible viscous fluid. By a judicious choice of a damping parameter and using direct methods for solving the systems of linear equations appearing in an iterative procedure, the central difference scheme could be made to give convergent results even for large Reynolds numbers. Using a model problem of flow through a driven square cavity it is shown that the converged results so obtained become progressively oscillatory and inaccurate as the Reynolds number increases. It is known that the central difference scheme gives more accurate results than the upwind difference scheme, at least for small values of Reynolds number. However, for a reasonably small mesh size the numerical solutions obtained by using either the central or the upwind difference scheme do not differ appreciably at low Reynolds numbers. There is a small range of Reynolds numbers for which the central difference scheme may yield more accurate results than the upwind difference scheme; however, this range is not known a priori.

    Notes: Numerical solutions for two-dimensional or axisymmetric viscous fluid flow problems are usually based on the stream function/vorticity formulation. Frequently, however, the pressure distribution is of prime interest. Difficulties have been reported in the literature with the use of obvious pressure marching schemes. Consequently, several investigators have preferred to use an iterative method which involves solving a Poisson equation with Neumann boundary conditions. In this paper, the fundamental cause of failure of the marching schemes is investigated. The authors introduce the concept of compatible pressure and vorticity schemes and show that lack of compatibility has been the principal reason for the poor results obtained using marching schemes. Compatible pressure marching methods are developed and shown to give good results. Comparisons are made between the Poisson equation method and the compatible marching method. To make the comparisons meaningful, special test cases with analytical solutions have been used.

    Notes: A boundary-location method is developed for finite element simulation of steady, two-dimensional flows of Newtonian liquid with free boundaries. In the method, boundary shape and position and the velocity and pressure fields are determined simultaneously. Inertial, viscous, gravitational, and surface tension effects are included in the development. The complete set of nonlinear finite element equations is solved by a modified frontal method combined with Newton-Raphson iteration to speed convergence. The finite element used to illustrate the method approximates the pressure as a piecewise constant function and the velocity and free boundaries as piecewise linear functions. Example calculations for flow from a slit show that the method can be effective.

    Notes: The choice on an efficient direct integration procedure for linear structural dynamic equations of motion is discussed. It is suggested that as accuracy parameter the truncation error on the exponential terms contained in the modal contributions of the exact solution be assumed. This error does not always coincide with the local truncation error. These considerations were used to design an unconditionally stable one-step method whose accuracy is 0(h4). Numerical comparisons with some well-known integration schemes showed the efficiency of the proposed method.

    Notes: A modification (Irons;6 Concus et al. 1) to the conjugate gradient (CG) method by Hestenes and Stiefel5 has recently renewed the interest in this elegant technique which appears to be extraordinarily promising for large sparse systems Ax = b, where A is a symmetric positive definite matrix. A good approximation K-1 for the inverse of A is needed in the modified algorithm. For finite difference sets of equations, Meijerink and van der Vorst9 and Kershaw7 have experienced a very fast convergence with a matrix K-1 determined by the incomplete Cholesky decomposition of A.A further acceleration of the iteration may be achieved by preliminarily processing the initial guessed solution by the Newton iterative scheme before using the modified conjugate gradient (MCG) method. The initial Newton iterations (NI) have the useful property of significantly reducing the components of the residual r0 along the eigenvectors of AK-1 associated with the eigenvalues lying in the vicinity of 1. The latter are expected to include the vast majority of the eigenvalues of AK-1. As a result the MCG method is left with a smaller number of r0 components to set to zero in a reduced dimensional eigenvector space and hence the solution is arrived at in fewer iterations. Depending on the desired final accuracy, up to 50 per cent of the MCG iterations may be equivalently replaced by an equal number of NI which are computationally faster.This approach has been applied to the solution of finite element sets of linear equations arising from the arbitrarily irregular triangle discretization of groundwater flow domains in both steady and unsteady conditions. For diagonally dominant matrices the results emphasize the excellent performance of the MCG method which proved much faster than the first-degree Chebyshev iteration (CHI) and required a number of iterations an order of magnitude smaller than the successive over-relaxation technique (SOR) with optimum over-relaxation factor.

    Notes: The method of data transfer from the peripheral storage unit to the central processor unit, when dealing with large solution systems, is of greater importance, as each access of peripheral stored data interrupts the active flow of arithmetic operation in the central processor core. When solving a large number of symmetrical positive-definite equations this generally leads to difficulties in channel interaction and priority, possibly even to the breakdown of the computer system or to uneconomical computing times. The problem increases when considering the iterative approximation of nonlinear problems; further still, when using the frontal solution method. It will be shown that this difficulty can be avoided by inserting two different types of buffers - a micro-buffer and a macro-buffer - into the data transfer between the central memory and an arbitrary peripheral storage unit. This method should primarily be used in those finite element (FE) programs which are based on the ‘slow’ BACKSPACE-READ-BACKSPACE commands, but even in the case of peripheral storage units such as magnetic discs (random access) or magnetic tape machines (working in one or two directions) the computing time and channel control can successfully be improved. A second achievement of this procedure is the possibility of applying a FE program economically, not only to large element systems and elements of a ‘higher order’ but also with good results for small element systems, e.g. when investigating nonlinear material behaviour with simple element types and geometrical structure. Another purpose of this text is to recommend the FORTRAN subroutine in the Appendix, whose novel features make it a useful supplement to ‘nonlinear’ FE programs.

    Notes: A method for improving the convergence rate of iterative processes is presented. This method monitors the sequence of approximations produced by an iterative process, and generates a new iterative process, or sequence of processes, each with more rapid convergence characteristics than the previous one. This method of process modification can be applied to many iterative techniques currently in use. Examples of application of the method are given, using both nonlinear and linear systems. In one of these examples it is shown that the method can be applied to a divergent iterative process, producing a convergent one. It is also shown how the technique can be applied to equations of one variable, yielding a method with convergence characteristics similar to those of Newton's method, but without the explicit calculation of derivatives.

    Notes: A C0 (penalty) finite element is developed for the equations governing the heterogeneous laminated plate theory of Yang, Norris and Stavsky. The YNS theory is a generalization of Mindlin's theory for homogeneous, isotropic plates to arbitrarily laminated anisotropic plates and includes shear deformation and rotary inertia effects. The present element can also be used in the analysis of thin plates by appropriately specifying the penalty parameter. A variety of problems are solved, including those for which solutions are not available in the literature, to show the material effects and the parametric effects of plate aspect ratio, length-to-thickness ratio, lamination scheme, number of layers and lamination angle on the deflections, stresses, and vibration frequencies. Despite its simplicity, the present element gives very accurate results.

    Notes: A hybrid-stress element is developed for the analysis of thin and moderately thick plates. The independent transverse displacement and rotations are interpolated by the 12-node cubic Serendipity shape functions. All components of stress are included and 36β stress assumption is used. The element stiffness possesses correct rank and numerical results indicate that the element does not lock in the thin-plate limit. Results obtained using the present element are compared with those obtained using a 12-node assumed-displacement based Mindlin plate element with reduced integration; the present hybrid-stress element is shown to yield superior accuracy for all cases considered. In addition, the accuracy of the present element is compared against that of analogous 4-node and 8-node hybrid-stress Mindlin plate elements.

    Notes: An analysis procedure for the plane strain contained plastic deformation problem is proposed. It is shown that, when piecewise-linear elastic-plastic laws are adopted, the plane strain problem can be formulated in terms of exactly the same variables appearing in a plane stress problem, even if the transverse stress and plastic strain components do not vanish in general. The two problems are governed by the same equilibrium and compatibility equations and the only difference is in the elastic-plastic material constitutive laws, in complete analogy with the linear elastic case.The problem is discretized by using a compatible finite element model on which basic elastic-plastic constitutive laws for an element in plane strain conditions can be obtained. When the assemblage is performed, the resulting set of governing relations presents a mathematical structure which enable, for solution, techniques efficiently used for truss and frame problems. Some solutions for axisymmetric tubes subjected to pressure and temperature gradients are illustrated.

    Notes: A nonlinear analysis is carried out for the motion of the inviscid, incompressible fluid in a two-dimensional, rigid, open container which is subjected to forced sinusoidal pitching oscillation. Firstly, the problem is defined as a nonlinear initial-boundary value problem by the use of a governing differential equation and boundary conditions. Next, the problem is formulated in the form of a pseudo-variational principle, which provides a basis for our discretization. The finite element method and finite difference method are used spacewise and timewise, respectively. Due to the strong nonlinearity of the problem, an incremental method is used for the numerical analysis. Numerical results obtained by the present method are compared with solutions of the linear theory and experimental data. The difference between linear and nonlinear analysis has been clearly indicated.

    Notes: In one dimension, Petrov - Galerkin nonsymmetric weighting for the convective diffusion equation can be interpreted as an added dissipation. The addition of an appropriate amount of dissipation can therefore give the same oscillation-free solutions as the ‘unwinding’, Petrov - Galerkin, finite element methods. The ‘balancing dissipation’ is optimally chosen so that excessive dissipation does not occur. A scheme is presented for extending this approach to two-dimensional problems, and numerical examples show that the new method can be used with improved computational efficiency.

    Notes: The Ziegler modification of the Prager hardening rule has been used in conjunction with a combined isotropic-kinematic workhardening rule in order to predict the Bauschinger effect during cyclic loadings. There has been some controversy as to whether the above workhardening rule predicts a stress increment which is consistent with the yield condition. The purpose of this communication is to establish the combined hardening rule as a consistent statement in order to clarify its correctness.

    Notes: A method is proposed for the study of growth, under normal internal pressure, of pre-existing hydraulically induced planar cracks. The continuous growth process is approximated by a stepwise one, and during each growth step the volume of fluid within the crack cavity is assumed constant. The normal distance through which each point on the crack edge moves outwards is controlled by the level of stress intensity factor KI at each point, and the crack-resistance characteristics of the material, which can be expressed by some critical level of KI, denoted by KIC. For the present study, that distance was assumed proportional to (KI - KIC)4 for KI 〉 KIC. The evaluation of KI at the crack edge is achieved by utilizing the method discussed by Mastrojannis et al.1 The proposed method was applied to the study of the initial stage of growth of a circular crack under linearly varying normal pressure, and of an elliptical crack under uniform normal pressure.

    Notes: An analysis of axisymmetric free jet impingement on to finite disks was performed using the finite element method. The method employed the velocity potential as the dependent variable and six-node triangle elements to represent the region of flow. The analysis was divided into three parts corresponding to three distinct regions of the flow: (1) In the disk region, the free jet impinged on to a finite disk which was oriented normal to the flow. The jet was subjected to zero or normal gravity and to surface tension effects of varying degrees. (2) Upon leaving the disk region, the jet entered the plume region where it was acted upon internally by surface tension and externally by zero or normal gravity. (3) In the collision region, the flow from the plume region collided symmetrically at some downstream area about the axis of symmetry. The major result achieved from this investigation was the development of techniques to locate the free surface in all three regions for a range of conditions. The velocity profiles along selected lines of constant values of the potential were determined, and a successful comparison was made between the numerical results and existing experimental data.

    Notes: We extend the variation principle used in the global element method for self-adjoint elliptic problems1, to problems containing advective terms. Used with the global element formalism, the extended principle yields a uniform framework for treating advective or boundary layer problems, with the attractive feature that the implicit treatment of interface conditions between elements yields an effective decoupling between ‘boundary layer’ and ‘interior’ parts of the solution. As a numerical example, we solve the one-dimensional model problem of Christie and Mitchell3, obtaining high accuracy for Peclet numbers up to 106 with no sign of instability. These results suggest that, given a suitable choice of global elements, the decoupling is very effective in damping the oscillations found in standard finite difference or finite element treatment.

    Notes: A method for calculating natural frequencies and mode shapes of large structural systems with substructures and the subspace iteration is developed. The method uses only substructural stiffness matrices and the mass matrix for each finite element of the system. The mass matrix for the entire structure or any of its substructures need not be computed. However, efficiency of the method is improved when mass matrix for the entire structure is computed and saved in the computer core. No approximating assumptions are made. Thus, natural frequencies and mode shapes for the finite element model employed are the same with or without the substructuring algorithm. This is demonstrated by computing first ten natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes for an open truss helicopter tail-boom structure.

    Notes: A simple, rapidly convergent procedure is described for solving a third-order symmetric eigenvalue problem Au = λ Bu typically arising in vibration analysis. The eigenvalue problem is represented in terms of its variational dual, the Rayleigh quotient, and the eigenosolution is obtained through a topographical search for points of quotient stationarity. The associated computer routine is compact and can easily be incorporated within the calling program. Degenerate eigensolutions cause no difficulty. An example FORTRAN routine is given.
