Notes: The diagostic value of odd-integer half-harmonic emission from laser-produced plasmas is evaluated in the light of recent spectral measurements on UV irradiation experiments. It has been found that under certain conditions a sharp, slightly red-shifted feature is observed in the ω/2 spectra. This feature has been identified with a particular mode of the 2ωp decay instability for which one of the plasmon wave vectors vanishes. This feature is eminently well suited for coronal electron temperature measurements. Another half-harmonic (blue-shifted) feature is more easily observed and may serve as a secondary—though less accurate—temperature diagnostic. In contrast, the spectral splitting of the (3)/(2) harmonic emission proved to be ill suited for temperature diagnostics because of its sensitivity to irradiation and observation geometry. Either ω/2 or 3ω/2 emission is, however, a good qualitative indicator for the presence of the 2ωp decay instability although quantitative inferences on the level of the 2ωp decay instability are not possible at this point.

Notes: Underdense foam targets were irradiated with a single UV laser beam at intensities up to 1015 W/cm2. The incident laser propagated into the foam a distance of 500–1000 μm, depending on the average target density. The backscattered Brillouin and 3ω0/2 radiation were observed to have the same dependence on the incident laser intensity, indicating a strong interrelation of these processes. A possible coupling mechanism is proposed.

Notes: Abstract— Fretting fatigue strengths of high strength spring steel (JIS SUP9) and low strength medium carbon steel (JIS S45C) were examined by clamping the contact pads of the same individual materials. The pad contact pressures were kept constant at 60 MPa for SUP9 steel and at 45 MPa for S45C steel. The fretting reduced the fatigue strengths by a factor of about two in both the steels. Cyclic J-integral concepts were successfully employed to predict crack propagation lives using measured data on frictional forces between the fretting pads and the specimens.

Notes: Abstract A multiple-output logic element using an optical interference system is proposed. The system acts as a logic gate array operating in parallel at certain positions divided over one period of the output fringe. A photoinduced refractive-index change material is incorporated in the system to perform the optical transformation of optical inputs into the phase change of a readout beam. It is shown that the logic gates obtained can be controlled arbitrarily in number and sorts by adjusting either the shift or the division of the output fringe. As an example, logic gates of AND, OR, NAND, NOR are implemented in parallel in the preliminary experiments.

Notes: Abstract Images of a flare and active regions were obtained in the extreme ultraviolet emission lines such as CIII 977 Å, Ne VIII 770 Å, and HI Lβ, and hydrogen Lyman continua with a spatial resolution of less than ten seconds of arc together with one-dimensional scanning at 1650 Å. A microchannel plate was used as a detector, and pointing accuracy was, for about half of the observation time, around 0.5 arc sec. The relationship between the shape of the flare and the structure of the photospheric magnetic field is discussed. A map of the electron temperature distribution derived from the intensity ratio of the Lyman continua at 880 Å and 815 Å showed a lower temperature in regions of higher activity. A very small geometrical thickness of 50–500 m in the C III emitting region of the flare was found. And the layer emitting the continuum in 1650 Å is shown to be at a temperature of 5300 K in the flare and 4700 K in active regions.

Notes: Summary A mechanical framework on the transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) is presented. Numerical illustration of the theory can well explain such phenomena in TRIP as a remarkable increase in elongation at a certain range of temperature in the uniaxial tensile tests and the effect of the residual austenite.

Notes: Summary Gel filtration of antral extract of adult rats revealed gastrin-17 and gastrin-34. Gel filtration of anterior pituitary extract showed CCK8 and gastrin-17, whereas posterior pituitary extract showed only a CCK8. Antral gastrin-like immunoreactivity (G-LI) increased after milk feeding and especially after weaning was started. Changes in diet may exert a profound influence on the ontogenic development of antral G-LI, but not pituitary CCK8/G-LI.

Notes: Summary A family with adrenomyeloneuropathy (AMN) is reported, whose female carriers showed severe neurological and biochemical abnormalities. Cytoplasmic lamellar inclusions were found in endoneurial cells of the biopsied sural nerve of a male patient. In spite of the peripheral nervous system involvement in patients with AMN, there have been few reports of these inclusions in the peripheral nerves of such cases.

Notes: Summary Mitosis in the dermatophyteMicrosporum canis was studied by freeze substitution and electron microscopy, and analyzed by three dimensional reconstruction from serial sections of the mitotic nuclei. The interphase nucleus has associated nucleus-associated organelle (NAO) on a portion of the outer surface of the nuclear envelope, subjacent to which there was dense intranuclear material. The NAO divided and separated on the envelope, and a spindle was formed. The spindle was composed mostly of microtubules extended between opposite NAOs. Pairing of kinetochores was observed in the spindle from an early stage of development, when chromosomes were not so condensed, and remained unchanged while chromosome condensation proceeded until metaphase. Before the completion of nuclear division, daughter nuclei were connected by a narrow spindle channel, and then the nucleolus, whose structure underwent minimal change during mitosis, was eliminated into the cytoplasm.
