    Upregulation of epidermal surface molecule expression in primary and ultraviolet-induced lesions of lupus erythematosus tumidus (2002)

    Notizen: Summary Background Lupus erythematosus tumidus (LET), a photosensitive skin disorder with characteristic clinical and histological features, has not been generally accepted as a subset of cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE). Objectives To analyse the expression of epidermal surface molecules in skin biopsy specimens from patients with LET and to relate the results to other variants of CLE, such as discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) and subacute CLE (SCLE). Methods In total, 45 patients with different subtypes of CLE were included in the study, and cryostat sections from primary and ultraviolet (UV) A- and UVB-induced skin lesions were investigated using immunohistochemical methods. Results In contrast to healthy controls, skin lesions of LET showed upregulation of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and histocompatibility class II molecules (HLA-DR), with an expression pattern resembling that seen in DLE and SCLE. Furthermore, staining with a monoclonal antibody against 27E10, a distinct marker for cell activation and differentiation, revealed intense focal or band-like labelling of all epidermal layers independent of the type of lesion. Conclusions Expression of epidermal surface molecules such as ICAM-1, HLA-DR and 27E10 is equally upregulated in primary and UV-induced lesions of patients with LET, DLE and SCLE. These results support our recent clinical findings that LET represents a distinct subset of CLE with a similar immunopathomechanism rather than a different disease.

    Notizen: Abstract A brief review of the origins of bipolar leakage currents, the means used for its measurement and calculation and the importance of minimizing the phenomenon, is followed by a novel means of computing leakage currents more accurately than hitherto possible, using a commercially available simulation program. This has the further advantage that the reali-V characteristics of an electrochemical cell can be used, there being no need to represent the cell itself as a zener diode which is a poor representation of reali-V cell characteristics.

    Notizen: Abstract The performance of undivided cells with disparate anode-cathode ratios was studied using cerium (IV) reduction as a test reaction. The effects of electrode material and surface texture are reported. Results have been fitted to a computer-based model, and the role of bubble evolution and electrode coverage by bubbles is considered. Results are contrasted with those of a similar study using hypochlorite formation, which can give qualitatively different results.

    Notizen: Abstract The steady-state formation of sorbitol by cathodic reduction of glucose was studied in a parallel-plate reactor of 200 cm2 electrode area. Earlier work was extended to explore the effect of flow rate, pH and current density. The effect of temperature between 20° and 47° C and the use of amalgamated lead as compared with chemical lead and other metals is discussed. It is shown that addition of Zn2+ ions accelerates the reaction and the reasons for this are discussed. The implications for industrial application are considered.

    Notizen: Abstract Anodic or cathodic processes in which protons are released or consumed, respectively, lead to local pH changes at the electrode surface. The phenomenon is important in several branches of metal finishing, in corrosion, electro-organic synthesis and other branches of applied electrochemistry, as well as being a factor which can invalidate mechanistic investigations. The concept of ‘pHs’ (near-surface pH) is examined, as are the experimental techniques which have been used to measure it. Many of these are inherently weak. Published results are shown to be largely discrepant, both in respect of the magnitude of the effect and even its incidence. Attempts to treat the phenomenon theoretically are briefly summarized.

    Notizen: Abstract The electrodeposition of copper-silver and copper-nickel powders from aqueous ammoniacal solutions at a continuously scraped rotating cylinder cathode is described. Ag-Cu powders can be prepared under these conditions, but the individual particles are inhomogeneous and the extent of this inhomogeneity is examined. Surface areas (from BET) and particle size distributions are reported, and the morphology is considered. Cu-Ni powders deposited under these conditions are heavily contaminated with oxide/ hydroxides and this is attributed to an increase in near-cathode pH.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Summary In a complex animal model in sheep, polydioxanone (PDS®) and polylactic membranes were used for the reconstruction of large orbital-wall defects. In a long-term experiment over 1 year, polylactic implants alone showed the best performance as compared with combinations involving autogenous bone grafts and titanium miniplate fixation. As soon as these polylactic implants are approved for human surgery, they will be used to solve the still challenging problem of anatomical reconstruction of large comminuted fractures of more than one orbital wall.
    Notizen: Zusammenfassung In einem experimentellen Modell wurden biodegradierbare Membranen aus Polydioxanon (PDS ® ) resp. Polylaktat zur Rekonstruktion großer Orbitawanddefekte bei Schafen verwendet. Im Langzeitversuch über ein Jahr zeigten diejenigen Rekonstruktionen die besten Resultate, bei welchen ausschließlich biodegradierbare Implantate aus Polylaktat zur Anwendung kamen. Bei gleichzeitiger Verwendung von autologen Knochentransplantaten und Titan-Miniplatten-Osteosynthesen war die anatomische Form der rekonstruierten Orbita weniger zuverlässig gewährleistet. Es darf erwartet werden, dass die klinische Zulassung der Polylaktat-Implantate die chirurgische Wiederherstellung ausgedehnter Trümmerfrakturen mehrerer Orbitawände wesentlich erleichtern wird und zu vorhersehbaren, anatomischen Rekonstruktionen führt.

    Notizen: 5 rubidium-87 atoms released from an Ioffe–Pritchard magnetic trap is investigated experimentally. The expansion dynamics depend only on the trap frequencies, which are determined independently. The data are in good agreement with the expected expansion of a condensate, and are clearly distinct from the behaviour of a classical gas in the hydrodynamic regime.
