Notes: Abstract The structure of the fully-patent umbilical artery and rearrangement of its structural elements with postnatal closure were examined in 10 centimeter long umbilical cord segments which were double-clamped at different time intervals after delivery. The fully-patent umbilical artery consists of two main layers: an outer layer of circularly arranged smooth muscle cells and an inner layer which shows rather irregularly and loosely arranged cells embedded in abundant metachromatic ground substance. No predominantly longitudinal arrangements of cells and fibers reported by earlier investigators could be identified in the inner layer. Closure of the umbilical arteries is initiated by numerous localized contractions which are mainly formed by muscle cells of the outer circular layer. Ultimate closure of larger segments of the umbilical arteries is also mainly produced by contractions of the outer layer. In contrast, the inner layer (which is rich in ground substance) seems to serve mainly as a plastic tissue which can easily be shifted in an axial direction and then folded into the narrowing lumen to complete closure. Electron microscopy reveals that the cells of this layer represent rather poorly differentiated smooth muscle cells which contain only a few tiny myofilaments and can therefore hardly contribute actively to the process of closure.

Notes: Summary The central nervous systems of web-building spiders (Araneidae, Agelenidae) and hunting spiders (Lycosidase, Salticidae) were tested for non-specific and specific phosphatases. Acid phosphatase exhibited weakly to moderately positive reactions in the neuronal cell bodies and in the neuropile fibre mass of all species investigated. Alkaline phosphatase could only be demonstrated in the external and internal neural lamellae of the brain and ventral cord of several specimens of the araneid species investigated. Tests for thiamine pyrophosphatase were negative with both the lead and calciumcobalt methods. Distinctive positive reactions for adenosine triphosphatase were visible in the nervous system of all the species used, being especially strong in the optic ganglia of the hunting spiders. The demonstration of adenosine triphosphatase was only possible when applying the calcium-cobalt method after Padykula and Herman, while the lead method after Wachstein and Meisel did not produce any staining reaction at all. Controls of the histochemical reaction showed that the enzyme was activated by Ca2+ and inhibited by sulphydryl destroying reagents (e.g. PCMB), but was insensitive to ouabain. It could be probably classified as a mitochondrial proton-translocating adenosine triphosphatase.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The authors report on the immuno electron microscopic demonstration of Concanavalin A-receptors on the erythrocyte membrane. Immuno freeze-etching studies evidenced a focal arrangement of Concanavalin A-receptors on intact erythrocytes as well as on erythrocyte ghosts. Obviously hemolysis by distilled water does not produce changes in the pattern of distribution of Concanavalin A-receptors whereas slight aggregation of plasma membrane intramembraneous particles occured. No unambigous spatial relationship between Concanavalin A-receptors and the plasma membrane intramembraneous particles (intrinsic proteins) of erythrocytes could be observed.

Notes: Summary During the hatching period, the Rohon-Beard cells of Salmo gairdneri showed definite structural maturity of their perikarya, which is in contrast to the amphibian species investigated, where neuronal maturation of the Rohon-Beard cells is finished only in later — posthatching — developmental stages.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Durch Versuche an 73 GrCh-Kaninchen wird belegt, daß homologe und heterologe (bovine) Photoreceptor-Außensegmente (ROS) klinisch gleichartige Chorioretinitiden induzieren.
Notes: Summary Experiments with 73 GrCh rabbits showed, that both homologous and heterologous (bovine) photoreceptor outer segments (ROS) induce chorioretinitic diseases of the same kind. The findings refer to questions of localization and efficiency of homologous and heterologous (bovine) pathogenic ROS antigens.

Notes: Summary The authors studied the appearance and behavior of complement-fixing anti-ROS antibodies in the sera of GrCh rabbits following one or two intracutaneous injections of retinal antigens emulsified in Freund's complete adjuvant (KFA). Fourteen different antigenic preparations from heterologous, homologous, and autologous retinal components incorporated in KFA were tested and compared. Apart from the supernatant of a centrifuged homogenized preparation of homologous retina, all immunogens generally induced anti-ROS antibodies. The antibody titers (reciprocal values) reached a maximum 4 to 8 weeks post injection, at only low levels. The changes in antibody concentrations showed some relationship to the quality and dose of the immunogens. Anamnestic effects following reinjection reached maximum values within as little as 5 to 14 days. Animals not developing chorioretinitic lesions showed higher antibody titers more frequently than rabbits with clinically confirmed disease. Provided there is sufficient relevance of the humoral reactions observed, the complement-fixing antibodies we found in our experiments are more likely to have protective than pathogenic functions.
