Notes: Summary In an experimental study we compared different constructions of external fixators in bone models under excentric load with reference to the movements in the fracture space. Four modified Schanz screws 5/8 mm in diameter in the lateral bracket of a type-III femur fixator gave even greater stability than a construction with six normal 5-mm screws. We conclude that if our modified Schanz screws are used in external fixation the number of implants can be reduced while the stability is rendered even greater.

8 mm) entwickelt.
Notes: Summary Investigations have shown that the normal 4.5 mm Steinmann-nails with a central thread are the weakest part of external fixation systems. Therefore we developed a 4.5 or 7 mm screw-nail with the thread of AO cortical screws. In experimental studies we found that mounting forms with the new screw-nails were up to 40% more stable in comparison to those with conventional Steinmann pins. First clinical trials were successful. In analogy to our screw-nail we developed a modified Schanz screw (5 or 8 mm diameter).

Notes: Nascent high-molecular-weight (UHMW) polyethylene (PE) samples of different origins show a rather high crystallinity of about 70-75% and contain both a major portion of orthorhombic extended chain crystallites and a minor portion of triclinic crystallites. The triclinic content is greater the higher the molecular weight of the sample and the higher the activity of the used catalyser. A melting / recooling treatment results in a reduction of crystallinity by about 15-25% and disappearance of the triclinic phase. Further, an irreversible conversion of nascent orthorhombic extended chain crystallites to orthorhombic folded chain crystallites of increased lateral dimensions and crystalline perfections takes place during the melting / recooling treatment. The results are compared to those obtained for lower-molecular-weight PE samples and for high-strength / modulus PE fibers of different origins.

Notes: We present results of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and optical spectroscopy on different charge states of the transition metal impurity iron in ZnTe and CdTe. We identify the energy level position of the Fe+ acceptor in ZnTe at Ev + 1.7eV and estimate its position in CdTe. Ionisation transitions from Fe+to the conduction and valence bands ar found in both absorption spectroscopy and photo-EPR. Optical intra-defect tracsitions from Fe+ to crystalfield-split excited states ar resolved for the first time. This assignment to Fe2+ is based on optically detected EPR. Application of both far-infrared Fourier transform and EPR spectroscopy allows the determination of the total iron concentration in all charge states.

Notes: The supermolecular structure of blown HDPE films, which were obtained by a combination of film blowing under a very low blowup ratio and slow takeoff velocity with subsequent uniaxial drawing, is characterized using WAXS texture and profile analysis, EM and mechanical investigations. Samples with low uniaxial drawing ratios (λ ≲ 1.5) contain low stress crystalline and transcrystalline material and show an a-texture, while samples with higher uniaxial drawing ratios only consist of high stress crystalline material and show a c-texture. With one exception the results of texture investigations can be related to the results of the mechanical investigations.

Notes: The influence of annealing on the supermolecular structure of commercial, thermostable fibers, spun from solutions of poly(p-phenylene-1,3,4-oxadiazole) (POD) in H2SO4, is examined. The crystalline α-modification of thermally treated POD fibers has an orthorhombic unit-cell probably of space group P212121. The symmetry of the single POD chain in these crystallites is 21. The unit-cell dimensions are a = 1.235 nm, b = 0.655 nm, c = 1.40···1.47 nm, where c depends on the annealing temperature Ta. The unit cell contains 4 chains of two monomers each. Annealing up to Ta of about 755 K causes increases in crystallite size, crystalline orientation, and linear degree of order, combined with an improved axial Young's modulus E. Thermal degradation at higher temperatures leads to the breaking of tie molecules in general, while UV-radiation selectively damages tie molecules that are not taut.

Description / Table of Contents: The supermolecular structures of polyethylene filaments prepared by crystallization from solution in extensional flow at different crystallization temperatures as well as of annealed and zone-drawn samples have been characterized by means of X-ray diffraction methods. The lattice distortions in the crystallites of such samples are quantitatively determined for the first time. The results show that a direct correlation between the crystallite dimensions and the amount of lattice distortions on the one hand and the axial Young's modulus on the other hand can be excluded. Based on X-ray, mechanical and shrinkage investigations, some parameters of the structure of the non-crystalline regions are estimated. A structure model for the high-modulus polyethylene filaments is discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: The Microfibrillar structure of algae cellulose, bacterial cellulose, ramie, cotton linters, and dissolving pulp samples were investigated by electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The microfibrils as detected by means of electron microscopy show different features and lateral dimensions from 4 nm to 95 nm depending on the source of the cellulose. Lateral crystallite dimensions have been obtained by wide angle X-ray diffraction. Using a Fourier method for peak profile analysis separate determinations of lateral crystallite size and lattice distortions are given for the first time for cellulose I samples (valonia, ramie). The mean lateral dimensions of the crystallites, being subunits of the microfibrils, vary between 4 nm for pulp and 10 nm for valonia cellulose. Models of the supermolecular structure of the fibrils have been discussed critically.

Notes: High strength/high modulus fibres can be prepared by cold drawing of UHMW-PE gel fibres. It is shown that the crystalline order in this fibres is not perfect. The supermolecular structure is characterized by a shish-kebab morphology. Results of X-ray and mechanical investigations permit to explain the drawing process by a three-step mechanism of molecular orientation and stretching coupled with molecular and fibrillar sliding.
