    Notes: Summary The problems of therapy are described by comparing a retrospective (17 cases) to a prospective (12 cases) study of cases of traumatic lesions of the optic nerve. Intensive cooperation between specialists and a quick diagnosis facilitate the decision regarding treatment and lead to better results. Indication for surgical treatment — transcranial or transethmoidal approach — should be confined to posttraumatic deterioration of optic nerve function in combination with fractures of the optic canal, and to its deterioration in spite of proper conservative treatment — shock treatment and cortisone infusions-.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Tastkörperähnliche Strukturen wurden in einem plexiformen Neurofibrom aufgefunden. Dieser Tumor war an der rechten kranialen Hemisphäre eines 16 Jahre alten Jungen lokalisiert und erforderte wiederholte operative Eingriffe. Die tastkörperähnlichen Strukturen wurden mit licht- und elektronenmikroskopischer Technik untersucht. Die Meinung über die Herkunft dieser Strukturen ist noch kontrovers. Die Autoren glauben, daß sie genügend Hinweise dafür gefunden haben, daß sie von Schwannschen Zellen abzuleiten sind.
    Notes: Summary Tactile corpuscle-like structures were identified in a plexiform neurofibroma, which was localized on the right cranial hemisphere of a 16-year-old boy and had necessitated repeated surgery. These structures were studied by light and electron microscopy. The origin of their component cells is, however, still controversial. We believe to have accumulated sufficient evidence for a Schwann cell origin of these cells.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird eine seltene komplexe Mißbildung eingehend beschrieben mit asymmetrischen Veränderungen im frontonasalen Bereich, einer beidseitig durchgehenden Lippen-Kiefer-Gaumen-Spalte Fehlbildungen des rechten Auges, des Unterkiefers, der Zunge, der äußeren Ohren, der hinteren Schädelgrube und des Kleinhirns sowie einer Dextroposition des Herzens und einer überzähligen Rippe beiderseits. Die Problematik der kausalen und formalen Genese derartiger Mißbildungen wird besprochen und gezeigt, daß eine Zuordnung zu einem der in Frage kommenden Syndrome eigentlich nicht möglich ist.
    Notes: Abstract A rare complex malformation is described consisting of asymmetrical changes in the fronto-nasal region, bilateral complete cleft lip, alveolar ridge, and palate, malformation of the right eye, the mandible, the tongue, the external ears, the posterior cerebral fossa and the cerebellum, as well as cardiac dextroposition and a supernumary rib on both sides. Problems of aetiology and structural genesis are discussed. It is shown that classification into one of the existing syndromes is not really possible.

    Notes: The plane-strain fracture toughness of two common epoxy systems of different ductility were determined at different loading rates, according to ASTM E 399 for metallic materials. The ASTM standard was applicable, but underestimated slightly the specimen thickness required for KIc. KIc decreased with an increasing loading rate and with an increasing yield stress. The fracture surfaces were all very smooth as long as plane-strain conditions prevailed.

    Notes: The acoustic emission behavior during tensile loading of two common epoxy systems of different ductility was investigated at different loading rates. At low threshold voltage, it was possible to register acoustic emissions before the final failure. Only very few emissions were recorded compared with the amount commonly recorded for metals and composite materials. The acoustic emissions detected were of burst-type, revealing a brittle damage accumulation process. They originated from the initiation and incremental growth of microcracks of stochastic nature. The events occurred before gross yielding and during the final “brittle” failure process. Basically no events were detected between gross yielding and the final failure during which large scale yielding, necking, and stable crack growth took place. The occurrence of events at the different loading rates was strongly influenced by the yielding behavior and fracture toughness, characterized by the yield stress σy and the plane-strain fracture toughness KIc respectively. KIc was inversely dependent on the total number of events up to gross yielding. The event distribution normalized with respect to the conditions at gross yielding was hardly affected by the loading rate.
