Notes: Summary Loss of maturation features is demonstrated for 8-day-old chick embryo heart myocytes, once they have been completely dissociated by trypsin. In support of this statement a total of 65 sections of six isolated cells, fixed while still spherical or during early flattening, were examined under the electron microscope. Trypsin-separated heart muscle cells, even though originating from already differentiated embryonic heart tissue, can therefore in principle be used for differentiation experiments in culture. However, the same cell suspensions also yielded an appreciable quantity of nonisolated cells. In such cell complexes, one can find areas showing well-ordered fibrils and intercalated disks. From 27 sections of a cell pair incidentally transferred into culture undissociated and then fixed while still in the globular state, the fourth and fifth sections, starting from the substrate side of the culture, showed an intercalated disk. Because of its small diameter, this cell complex would hardly have been retainable by a gauze with meshes likely to allow passage of only single cells. Thus the availability of differentiation experiments in culture, starting with already differentiated heart tissue, is restricted to cases where, in a selected territory, each cell has been established without doubt as isolated.

Notes: Summary The behaviour of transfused homologous granulocytes was studied under the influence of previous blood transfusions. Granulocytes concentrated by means of the Dextran method were labeleed with DF32P and administered intravenously to 9 patients previously treated with multiple blood transfusions. Homologous and autologous granulocytes were administered intravenously to 10 healthy control persons. The number of circulating labeleed granulocytes and the efficiency of the transfusions proved significantly reduced in comparison with the controls.

Notes: Summary The results of the statistical study can be summarized as follows: 1. The SGOT levels are not influenced by age. Phosphate, bilirubin and total protein are subject to hardly any changes up to age 80, but decrease thereafter. The average values of uric acid and urea (BUN) increase steadily from adolescence until very old age, while those of calcium and albumin fall continuously. The average values of cholesterol, LDH, alkaline phosphatase, and probably also those of blood sugar, reach a maximum around the eight decade and then recede in the very old. 2. In nearly all blood serological parameters vigorous centenarians display a biologically younger behaviour than would be expected in view of their calendar age. Thus the average values for calcium, albumin, total protein, uric acid, LDH and alkaline phosphatase in vitality group I approximate those found in the 71 to 80 age-group. With respect to the calcium, phosphate and SGOT levels, vigorous individuals of very old age show a continuity of the average values which persists over several decades; they can thus be readily compared with middle-aged subjects. In group I the blood sugar values are even more satisfactory than in the total group of the 71 to 80-year-old. In the vigorous centenarians bilirubin (significant) and urea (not significant) are the only parameters showing moderate reductions and increases, respectively, as compared with the 71 to 80 age-group. Hence vigorous long-lived persons can be considered to represent a positive selection from the total population. 3. Except for cholesterol, LDH and alkaline phosphatase, the decrease in vitality from group I to III is correlated with the deterioration of blood chemistry parameters. 4. In the centenarians a striking feature is the significant fall in cholesterol and alkaline phosphatase in association with a decreasing vitality. 5. In invalid centenarians (group III) particularly adverse values are found for phosphate, bilirubin, albumin, total protein, uric acid, urea and SGOT. This would appear to be causally related to increasing organ involution and resulting functional insufficiency, and also to the effects of multiple physical illness which are encountered in these infirm individuals in the stage of minimum life („vita minima“) processes.

Notes: Summary Monozygotic twins, both with Klinefelter's syndrome, are presented. One of them had clinical and serological evidence of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), whereas the other did not show any immunological disorder. In relation to this case of discordant SLE the role played by exogenous factors in triggering the manifestation of this autoimmune disease under a certain genetic predisposition is discussed.
