Notes: Summary The occurrence of a1 fetoprotein in nonmalignant changes of the gastric mucosa was investigated by means of immunohistochemistry and radioimmunoassay. The investigations were performed in tissue sections, cytological imprint preparations as well as in homogenized tissue samples (obtained by gastroscopy). a1 fetoprotein could be demonstrated by immunohistochemistry in about 90% of the samples originating from the surroundings of gastric ulcer and the region of gastrojejunostomy after B II-resection. The RIA was positive in about 75% of the tissue samples, whereas from gastric juice only 40% of positive results could be obtained. No a1 fetoprotein-activity could be demonstrated in serum samples. These investigations indicate that a1 fetoprotein is not exclusively synthesized by embryonic or neoplastic tissues and also can be synthesized also by regenerating cell-systems. It may be supposed that this synthesis represents an unspecific answer to growth-stimulation.

Notes: Summary The distributions of acid alpha1-glycoprotein, alpha1-fetoprotein, beta-galactosidase and gastrin in gastric carcinoma and gastric ulcer as well as in the neighbourhood of these lesions were studied by means of immunohistochemical methods on imprint preparation. We could not find significant differences between gastric carcinoma and the nonneoplastic lesions, except for the acid alpha1-glycoprotein. The results of this first study indicate that the immunochemical and immunohistological assay of acid alpha1-glycoprotein might be of practical value in diagnosing malignant changes of gastric mucosa.

Notes: Abstract Haptoglobin (HP), transferrin (TF), group specific component (GC) and protease inhibitor (PI) polymorphisms were studied in a population sample (n=272) from Tyrol (Austria). Comparing the allele frequencies of these polymorphic serum protein systems with those reported on other Austrian population samples some heterogeneity in the regional distribution of allele frequencies was seen, especially concerning the GC system. The reasons for that may be due to different historical backgrounds in the various regions of Austria.

Notes: Summary The etiology, diagnostic difficulties and treatment of five cases of aortointestinal fistulas are presented. In all of them, endoscopy played a major diagnostic role. Early diagnosis is essential for elective surgery since reconstruction in the massive bleeding stage has a mortality of up to 80%.

Notes: Summary Since nine patients with infantile liver cirrhosis or hepatopathy associated with the Pi ZZ phenotype had been observed in recent years in the Children's Hospital of the University of Innsbruck, Tyrol, the distribution of the Pi types and the PiM subtypes was determined in the Tyrolean population. Apparently healthy blood donors (868) from different regions of Tyrol were examined. Isoelectricfocusing was used for classification of Pi types. The frequency of the allele Piz was 0.0138, which corresponded to the range observed in other Middle European populations. The frequencies for the suballeles of PiM were PiM1=0.7062, PiM2=0.1480, and PiM3=0.1037. PiS had a frequency of 0.0225, the other rare alleles occurred with a combined frequency of 0.0058.
