    Notes: High Tc superconducting Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O thin films have been prepared by a novel hybrid technique that combines electron beam evaporation with organometallic chemical vapor deposition (OMCVD). Multilayer thin films of Ba-Ca-Cu-O are prepared by sequential evaporation of BaF2, CaF2, and Cu sources onto single-crystal MgO (100) or yttria-stabilized zirconia substrates followed by annealing in a water vapor-saturated oxygen atmosphere. Thallium is then incorporated in these films in either of two ways: (1) OMCVD using thallium(cyclopentadienide) as the source or (2) vapor diffusion using bulk Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O superconductor as the source. The resultant films are single phase, consisting predominantly of Tl1Ba2Ca2Cu3Ox with crystallite Cu-O planes preferentially oriented parallel to the substrate surface. Resistivity measurements indicate superconducting onset temperatures above 120 K with zero resistance by 104 K. By eliminating the water vapor in the initial anneal, fluoride (originating from the Ba and Ca sources) may be retained in the film. Upon T1 incorporation, this promotes formation of the Tl1Ba2Ca1Cu2Ox phase with preferential crystallite c-axis orientation perpendicular to the substrate surface.

    Notes: Using a specially designed off-axis faced magnetron sputtering chamber we have performed in situ x-ray diffraction studies of the growth of YBa2Cu3Ox films using a synchrotron light source. The orientation and rocking curve width were studied as a function of substrate temperature, O2/Ar partial pressures, and deposition rate. Growth rate was studied on SrTiO3, LaAlO3, and MgO.

    Notes: Thin films of YBaCu(F)O were deposited on SrTiO3(100) substrates by multilayer deposition from three electron guns containing Y, BaF2, and Cu under a pressure of 5×10−5 Torr of O2. The films were later annealed in a separate chamber under a flowing O2-H2O atmosphere. X-ray diffraction studies reveal that the resulting structure is highly oriented with the a axis perpendicular to the substrate. Scanning electron micrographs show a morphology consisting of an array of orthogonal, interconnecting bars with well-developed junctions. High-resolution electron microscopy and electron diffraction patterns show that these junctions are atomically abrupt and that the associated c axes are mutually perpendicular. These epitaxial films show a sharp resistive transition with Tc(R=0) as high as 90 K. The zero field critical current density, determined from magnetization measurements, is 2.9×106 A/cm2 at 4.2 K and 5.0×104 A/cm2 at 77 K.

    Notes: Epitaxial thin films of YBaCuO have been prepared with (1) the a axis perpendicular to (100) SrTiO3 ; (2) the c axis perpendicular to (100) SrTiO3 ; and (3) the [110] axis perpendicular to (110) SrTiO3. Films were fabricated using a multilayer deposition technique involving three electron guns containing Y, BaF2, and Cu under a pressure of 5×10−5 Torr of O2. As deposited films, which contained polycrystalline and amorphous regions, were later annealed in a furnace under a flowing O2-H2 O atmosphere. X-ray diffraction patterns as well as scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution electron microscopy images confirm that the films are highly oriented, essentially epitaxial. The a-axis oriented film exhibits zero resistance at 90 K and a critical current density of 2.9×106 A/cm2 at 4.2 K while the c-axis oriented film exhibits a Tc of 88 K and a Jc of 0.9×107 A/cm2 at 4.2K; the Jc values were determined magnetically. The [110]-orientation film shows the sharpest transition with a transition width of 1 K and zero resistance at 85 K.

    Notes: Thin films of YBaCuO were prepared as a superlattice of three constituents on SrTiO3 (100) substrates from three electron guns using a dedicated, computer-controlled evaporator. The results indicate that the as-deposited thin films grow as a superlattice of the three constituents, with a mixture of amorphous and polycrystalline regions. After annealing, however, the multilayer films are converted to the homogeneous superconducting phase; the morphology, studied with transmission electron microscopy, consisted of an array of orthogonal interconnecting rectangular bars. The better films had Tc(R=0)=90 K and Jc=2.9×106 A/cm2 at 4.2 K. The selected area electron diffraction pattern, and the high-resolution electron microscopy images show that the interconnecting bars are single crystals of the 1-2-3 phase. During annealing, the growth rate along the a and b directions is faster than along the c direction. For the films with the a axis oriented perpendicular to the substrate, the grains nucleated directly on the (100) surface of the SrTiO3 and grow through to the film surface. The grain boundary of two interconnecting rectangular crystals (bars) is abrupt at the atomic level over most of the boundary. The superconducting films and the substrates have a well-defined epitaxial relationship; the b and c axes are parallel to the in-plane 〈001〉 substrate axes for the a-axis oriented films. Depending on the film preparation conditions, the c-axis can also be perpendicular to the substrate plane. The morphology of samples with poorer superconducting performance consists of somewhat randomly oriented crystal bars of the 1-2-3 phase.

    Notes: The use of a stable glow discharge for the synthesis of carbon nanotubes is reported. Bundles of buckytubes are synthesized with remarkably large diameters (up to 200 μm). The bundles are evenly spaced, parallel, and occupy the entire central region of the deposited rod. High resolution electron microscopy (HREM) images of the deposited rod produced by the glow discharge revealed higher yield and improved quality buckytubes as compared to those produced by an arc discharge. The behavior of the two deposition modes (glow and arc) has been compared and their effects on the formation of buckytubes are discussed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report on a novel technique for synthesizing large quantities of single-shell carbon nanotubes in a dc arc with a composite anode of graphite and copper. Based on systematic studies involving a varying diameter and distribution of copper rods inside the graphite anode, we have correlated the presence of copper to the formation of monolayer buckytubes. We speculate that copper atoms in the discharge disrupt the orderly formation of multilayer buckytubes observed in earlier experiments.

    Notes: Buckybundles (bundles of buckytubes), approximately 50 μm in diameter and 1 cm in length, have been observed in a deposited carbon rod on the cathode electrode of a dc arc. Scanning electron microscopy images clearly show an evenly spaced array of parallel buckybundles. High resolution electron microscopy reveals that each buckybundle consists of closely packed buckytubes with their axes parallel to the bundle axis. Within each bundle it is estimated that there are about 107 buckytubes with diameters in the range (20–300 A(ring)). We have measured the deposited rod growth rate as a function of the He gas pressure and have evaluated the influence of the graphite feed rod diameter on the yield of buckybundles. The magnetic susceptibilities parallel and perpendicular to the bundle axes were measured. The results show that the bundles have anisotropic diamagnetic properties.

    Notes: The evolution of YBCO film growth with thickness at various oxygen pressures was observed by in situ synchrotron x-ray diffraction in real time. When the films were deposited at 2 A(ring)/s and 730 °C under higher oxygen partial pressures (in an Ar/O2 mixture of 90 mTorr), the nucleation was observed to have c-axis orientation. After the films reached a critical thickness, the growth of the YBCO film changed from c axis to a axis and then propagated epitaxially. This provides evidence that a-axis epitaxial growth nucleates on a c-axis base. The critical thickness reflects the competition between the growth of the c and a axes, which is determined by the oxygen partial pressure in the process of thin-film formation. The a-axis oriented films showed a very sharp rocking curve (less than 0.1°) which indicates a very high structural quality. For very low oxygen partial pressures, the in situ growth process was very similar, but the initial nuclei involve a second phase mixed with a small amount of c-axis "123'' phase. The nucleation and growth mechanisms of in situ YBCO films are discussed.
