Notes: Summary Mandibular condyles of 4-week-old Wistar strain rats and mandibles of ICR strain mice from 14 days gestation stage to 2 days postnatal stage were used to investigate the localization of Maclura pomifera lectin (MPA) during two modes of osteogenesis. During endochondral ossification of the mandibular condyle, MPA was only localized at the peripheral regions of calcified cartilage after the destruction of chondrocyte lacunae. Bone extracellular matrix (ECM) was not reacted with MPA. In intramembranous ossification of mice mandibles, MPA was stained intensively in the early bone ECM. The intensity of the MPA reaction decreased during bone development. In both cases of osteogenesis, chondroclasts and osteoclasts showed the strong affinity to MPA. These results indicated that the time- and position-specific changes within ECM proceeded during osteogenesis and that MPA was the useful probe to detect chondroclasts and osteoclasts.

Notes: Summary Thirty-five patients (7 females and 28 males) with cerebral infarction and suspicion of cerebral infarction of 4 h to 27 months duration were studied 45 times with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging using Bd-DTPA. Spin echo (SE) images were obtained before and after the administration of Gd-DTPA (0.1 or 0.15 mmol/kg) and compared with the enhanced CT. MR imaging using Gd-DTPA was more sensitive than enhanced CT and very useful for detecting a new focus of cerebral infarction, especially in the cases with multiple infarcted areas and for showing the extent of cortical and subcortical infarction. In most cases the MR enhancement was obvious in the subacute stage, especially after cerebral embolism, and the signal intensity of the lesion tended to show a gradual increase. The diagnosis of embolism was accepted on the basis of acute onset without prior TIA, coupled with angiography showing the embolus itself and/or a capillary blush and a wide area of infarction.

Notes: Abstract Undifferentiated gliomas of the brain stem were confirmed surgically in two young children. The patients were treated by aggressive irradiation of the entire neuraxis, similar to that administered for medulloblastoma. Therapy resulted in a good prognosis and there was no tumor recurrence.

Notes: Abstract The effect of the bivalveCorbicula japonica on the nitrogen cycle in Lake Shinji, a mesohaline brackish lagoon in Japan, was examined quantitatively based on field surveys and laboratory experiments carried out in the summer of 1982 and 1983. The biomass of the flesh ofC. japonica comprised 97% of the total biomass of the macrozoobenthos in summer. Total biomass ofC. japonica in the lake was estimated 30 986 t fresh wt. The concentration of suspended solids immediately above the lake bottom, whereC. japonica filters the water, was 1.5 to 4 times higher than that in the surface water. In laboratory experiments, the filtration rate was 5.0 litres g dry flesh wt-1 h-1, the excretion rates of ammonia and of feces and pseudofeces ofC. japonica were 200×10-6 g N g dry flesh wt-1 h-1 and 33.4 mg dry wt g dry flesh wt-1 h-1, respectively at 27°C, the average summer water temperature in the lake. From our study, we estimated thatC. japonica filters almost the same amounts of particulate organic nitrogen produced in the lake by phytoplankton and that supplied from rivers, and that it excretes 30% of filtered nitrogen as feces or pseudofeces and 18% as ammonia.

Notes: Abstract Interactions of the mixed surfactant solution of dodecylamido propyl dimethyl aminoacetate and sodium dodecyl sulfate with the liposomal membrane were studied. Lytic activities of the surfactants were measured as a function of the concentrations of surfactant and phospholipid and the composition of mixed surfactants. The solubilization limits of phospholipid by surfactants were determined from the change of their aggregation behavior in suspensions at equilibrium by means of quasi-elastic light scattering. The mixed surfactant solutions showed lower lytic activity than single component surfactant solution in spite of the strong adsorption onto the liposome surface. This was attributed to low solubilization power of binary mixture for phospholipid.

Notes: Abstract MnAl-X (X=Ti, Cu, Ni, C, B) ribbons were fabricated by a rapid quenching from the melt using a single roller method. As-rapid quenched ribbons were quenched completely into high temperature h c p phase. The rapid quenched ribbons were brittle especially carbon doped ribbons, however, the titanium doped ribbons were relatively ductile. Hard magnetic properties were measured using a vibrating sample magnetometer for the ten kinds of ribbons annealed at 410–700° C for 10 min–100 h. Phase transformation characteristics and magnetic properties were discussed by comparison with the samples produced by the conventional method. Titanium, boron and carbon doped ribbons showed good hard magnetic properties.
