    Notizen: Metalorganic chemical vapor deposition of Al2O3 using Al(O-C3H7)3 and N2O via pyrolysis was investigated with the goal of producing Al2O3 epitaxial films on p-Si (100) substrates. Room-temperature capacitance-voltage measurements clearly showed metal-insulator-semiconductor behaviors for the samples with the Al2O3 insulator gate, and the interface state densities at the Al2O3/p-Si interface were approximately 1011 eV−1 cm−2 at the middle of the Si energy gap. Auger depth profiles demonstrated that the Al2O3/Si interface was not abrupt, and transmission electron microscopy verified the formation of an interfacial layer in the Al2O3/Si interface and the formation of a polycrystalline Al2O3 thin film. These results indicated that the failure to form Al2O3 epitaxial films was due to the formation of an interfacial layer prior to the growth of the Al2O3 layer.

    Notizen: The phosphors of alkali-earth sulfides SrS:Eux (x=0.05 and 0.10 mole per mole of SrS), SrSO:Eux (x=0.05), and CaS:Eux (x=0.0005, 0.05, and 0.10) were studied by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The CaS:Eu phosphors were found to be stabilized against atmospheric water vapor and carbon dioxide by annealing at high temperature for several hours. The S 2p core level shows that the chemical state of sulfur changes abruptly from −2 to +6 between the annealing temperature of 900 and 1100 °C. The Ca core level, on the other hand, does not show much change depending on the annealing temperature. From the Eu 3d core-level spectra of SrS:Eux and CaS:Eux (x=0.10) phosphors, we confirm that the valence state of Eu in these phosphors is Eu3+.

    Notizen: Using laser-induced fluorescence techniques applied to Schumann–Runge absorption transitions from vibrationally excited O2(X3Σg−), we have measured the rotational and fine-structure level-specific linewidths in v=0 and v=2 of the B3Σu− state. These linewidths represent the first measurement of fine-structure level-specific predissociation rates in B3Σu−(v≤10), and they are found to vary considerably among the various rotational and fine-structure levels, encompassing a range of 0.09–0.34 cm−1 in v=0, N'≤36, and 0.4–1.4 cm−1 in v=2, N'≤24. Orbit-rotational coupling in the B3Σu−–3Πu interaction, in addition to spin-orbit coupling in the B3Σu−–1Πu, −3Πu, −5Πu interactions, is found to be crucial to explaining the relative predissociation rates among the fine-structure levels, even in low rotational levels. Measurements were made in the (v',v‘)=(0,9), (0,10), (0,21), (2,10), and (2,22) Schumann–Runge [B3Σu−(v')←X3Σg−(v‘)] bands without presumption as to the molecular constants in either the X or B states. The use of high ground state vibrational levels as a starting point for the photoexcitation measurements produces a spectral separation among the previously blended triplet components of the absorption lines. All lines in these bands are found to be broadened by predissociation, with those terminating in v'=0 and in the N'=J'−1 (F'1) levels exhibiting the smallest effect.

    Notizen: Results from helium, iron, and electron transport studies on the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) [Plasma Phys. Controlled Nucl. Fusion Res. 26, 11 (1984)] in L-mode and supershot deuterium plasmas with the same toroidal field, plasma current, and neutral beam heating power are presented. They are compared to results from thermal transport analysis based on power balance. Particle diffusivities and thermal conductivities are radially hollow and larger than neoclassical values, except possibly near the magnetic axis. The ion channel dominates over the electron channel in both particle and thermal diffusion. A peaked helium profile, supported by inward convection that is stronger than predicted by neoclassical theory, is measured in the supershot. The helium profile shape is consistent with predictions from quasilinear electrostatic drift-wave theory. While the perturbative particle diffusion coefficients of all three species are similar in the supershot, differences are found in the L mode. Quasilinear theory calculations of the ratios of impurity diffusivities are in good accord with measurements. Theory estimates indicate that the ion heat flux should be larger than the electron heat flux, consistent with power balance analysis. However, theoretical values of the ratio of the ion to electron heat flux can be more than a factor of 3 larger than experimental values. A correlation between helium diffusion and ion thermal transport is observed and has favorable implications for sustained ignition of a tokamak fusion reactor.

    Notizen: Experiments have been performed in the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor [D. M. Meade et al. in Plasma Physics Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research, 1990 (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1991), Vol. 1, p. 9] with neutral beam injection of up to 4 sec. duration, which is comparable to the time scale for resistive redistribution of the plasma current profile. These plasmas were created using a rapid decrease of the plasma current which initially created a plasma with enhanced stability and confinement. As the current profile evolved, a significantly reduced beta limit was observed. The high εβp plasmas had up to 90% of the current driven noninductively which significantly broadened the current profile during the long pulse lengths. These experiments demonstrated that high βN plasmas could not be sustained for times longer than the resistive relaxation of the outer current region which at early times after the current ramp-down carried negative current. At later times in lower βN discharges, beta collapses were sometimes observed as the current profile broadened at βN∼1.5. The appearance of disruptions was consistent with the predictions of ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) stability analyses.

    Notizen: Using perturbations in electron density and temperature induced by small helium gas puffs in TFTR (Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor) [Plasma Phys. Controlled Nucl. Fusion Res. 1, 51 (1986)], the dominance of convective heat transport in the core (r/a〈0.4) of supershot plasmas has been demonstrated in a new way. The transp [J. Comput. Phys. 43, 61 (1981)] transport code was used to calculate the time-dependent particle and heat fluxes. Perturbations in the calculated convective and total electron heat fluxes were compared. They demonstrate that the conductive component decreases moving into the supershot core, and the convective component dominates in the supershot core. These results suggest a different transport drive in the supershot core compared to that in the rest of the supershot plasma.

    Notizen: The apocrine nevus (AN) is a rare tumor occurring in the upper chest and the axilla. We report a case of a AN in a 33-year-old female occurring unilaterally. The presenting complaint related to tenderness and swelling in the right axilla. The initial impression was hidradenitis suppurativa. The gross specimen revealed the presence of irregular thickening just beneath the dermal subcutaneous interface. Microscopically the lesion was composed of mature apocrine glands with apical snouts. The glands were arranged in lobules divided by thin fibrous septa. immunohistochemical studies revealed the following profile in the glandular epithelium: positive low molecular weight cytokeratin, epithelial membrane antigen, and gross cystic disease fluid protein reactivity and negative high molecular cytokeratin and S-100 protein reactivity. Carcinoembryonic antigen reactivity was found in the duet epithelium. Ultrastructural studies revealed cells lining the lumen of the glands with a concentration of granules in the apical region and light and dark granules. These findings support the previously described light microscopic observations and provide unreported ultrastructural studies in this rare tumor.

    Notizen: General plasma physics principles state that power flow Q(r) through a magnetic surface in a tokamak should scale as Q(r)= {32π2Rr3Te2c nea/[eB (a2−r2)2]} F(ρ*,β,ν*,r/a,q,s,r/R,...) where the arguments of F are local, nondimensional plasma parameters and nondimensional gradients. This paper reports an experimental determination of how F varies with normalized gyroradius ρ*≡(2TeMi)1/2c/eBa and collisionality ν*≡(R/r)3/2qRνe(me/ 2Te)1/2 for discharges prepared so that other nondimensional parameters remain close to constant. Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) [D. M. Meade et al., in Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research, 1990, Proceedings of the 13th International Conference, Washington (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1991), Vol. 1, p. 9] L-mode data show F to be independent of ρ* and numerically small, corresponding to Bohm scaling with a small multiplicative constant. By contrast, most theories predict gyro-Bohm scaling: F∝ρ*. Bohm scaling implies that the largest scale size for microinstability turbulence depends on machine size. Analysis of a collisionality scan finds Bohm-normalized power flow to be independent of collisionality. Implications for future theory, experiment, and reactor extrapolations are discussed.

    Notizen: Abstract We report a 5-year-old boy with endodermal sinus tumour associated with benign cystic teratoma of the common bile duct (CBD). To our knowledge, there has been one case of teratoma of the CBD in the English literature with no morphological or radiological description. Our case presented a lobulated polypoid mass obstructing the distal CBD on sonography and computed tomography, which resembled the botryoid masses of rhabdomyosarcoma.
