Notes: Magnetic properties of giant magnetostrictive Sm–Fe and Sm–Fe–B thin films are systematically investigated over a wide composition range from 14.1 to 71.7 at. % Sm. The amount of B added ranges from 0.3 to 0.8 at. %. The microstructure mainly consists of an amorphous phase in the intermediate Sm content range from 20 to 45 at. %. Together with an amorphous phase, crystalline phases of Fe and Sm also exist at low and high ends of the Sm content, respectively. Well-developed in-plane anisotropy is formed over the whole composition range, except for the low Sm content below 15 at. % and the high Sm content above 55 at. %. As the Sm content increases, the saturation magnetization decreases linearly and the coercive force tends to increase, with the exception of the low Sm content where very large magnitudes of the saturation magnetization and the coercive force are observed due to the existence of the crystalline α-Fe phase. The coercive force is affected rather substantially by the B addition, resulting in lower values of the coercive force in the practically important Sm content range of 30–40 at. %. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A triode-type field emission display has been fabricated using carbon nanotube emitters. Purified single walled carbon nanotubes were selectively deposited onto a cathode electrode in a triode-type structure by an electrophoresis. Emission current was modulated with gate potentials of 100–300 V. A high brightness of 1000 cd/m2 with uniform emission was obtained at 900 V at the anode and 200 V at the gate. The fluctuation of emission current was found to be less than 5% in a fully sealed field emission display. Selective deposition of carbon nanotubes by electrophoresis shows high feasibility for triode-type field emission displays. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We investigated whether human β2 adrenoceptor (β2AR) gene polymorphisms are associated with the pressor response to laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation. Ninety-two patients undergoing elective surgery under general anaesthesia were enrolled into this study. Arterial systolic pressure, heart rate and rate pressure product were measured before induction of anaesthesia and 1 min following laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation. Genomic DNA was then used to identify the β2AR-16 and β2AR-27 genes using an allele-specific polymerase chain reaction method. Using multiple linear regression models, controlling for age, sex, weight, baseline blood pressure, heart rate and rate pressure product, we found that patients who possessed the glutamic acid homozygote of β2AR-27 produced significantly greater changes in mean arterial pressure and rate pressure products than patients with the glutamine homozygote of β2AR-27 (β coefficient for mean blood pressure = 11.81, β coefficient for pulse−pressure product = 8.76, both p-values = 0.023). These findings suggest that genetic variability in the human β2AR gene polymorphisms may be associated with the pressor response to laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation.

Notes: In this immunocytochemical study on the constitutive expression of Pax-7 protein in the postnatal chicken brain, Pax-7 showed region and cell type specific expression. In the optic tectum, only cells in grey matter showed positive immunoreactivities (IRs), whereas those in the white matters did not show any IRs. In thalamic nuclei and several pontine nuclei, we also localized Pax-7 positive IRs. On the contrary, in the cerebellum, Pax-7 was mainly localized within the Bergmann glia, whereas Purkinje cells did not show any IRs. In double immunolabelling studies, most of the Pax-7 IRs did not originate from neuroglial cells such as oligodendrocytes, microglia or astrocytes, but from neurons, with the exception of Bergmann glia in the cerebellum. The presence of Pax-7 IRs in the adult chicken brain could suggest that Pax-7 might play a role in maintaining normal physiological function in some postnatal chicken brain cells.

Notes: Abstract Temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and electron spin resonance (ESR) techniques have been employed to investigate the oxygen adsorbed on the paramagnetic defect centers in dehydroxylated AlPO4-20, AlPO4-11, AlPO4-5, and VPI-5 molecular sieves. Two different adsorption sites are observed for the small-pore AlPO4-20, where oxygen is entrapped within the intracrystalline voids generated during the calcination step, as well as within the β-cages. However, the unidimensional molecular sieves AlPO4-11, AlPO4-5, and VPI-5 have only one type of adsorption site within their inner pores. The apparent activation energies of desorption (12.0-21.7 kcal mol-1) determined from the oxygen TPD results demonstrate that, as the pore size of the AlPO4 molecular sieve is larger, the interaction between the adsorbed oxygen and the molecular sieve framework becomes weaker.

Notes: Abstract The metal oxides MgO, BaO, Al2O3, SiO2, MgO–Al2O3, CaO–Al2O3, SrO–Al2O3, BaO–Al2O3 and MgO–SiO2 have been coated onto ribbons of the Fe-based amorphous alloy Metglas 2605S3A using a sol–gel process. The effects of the surface coating on the magnetic properties of the alloy are investigated. The d.c. hysteresis loop for ribbons coated with MgO and MgO–Al2O3 is more square shaped than that for the uncoated ribbon. For ribbons coated with BaO, SrO–Al2O3 and BaO–Al2O3 it is more inclined than for the uncoated ribbon. Significant differences in the frequency dependence of the effective permeability are observed that depend on the nature of the coated oxides. The core loss is also affected by the coating. These results may be explained in terms of a stress induced by the coating and the modification of the domain structure via elastic and/or magnetoelastic interactions. It is thought from the magnetoelastic interactions that the MgO and MgO–Al2O3 coatings induce tensile stresses whilst those of BaO, SrO–Al2O3 and BaO–Al2O3 induce compressive stresses.

Notes: Abstract Solidification behavior of Al-20 wt% Si-8 wt% Fe and Al-30 wt% Si-5 wt% Fe alloys during cooling with a cooling rate of 10 K/min has been studied using optical microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, differential thermal analysis, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. In Al-20Si-8Fe alloy, metastable δ-Al4FeSi2 phase with tetragonal structure formed first from melt, followed by primary Si precipitation and then remaining liquid solidified finally into ternary eutectic of α-Al, Si and δ phases. However, in Al-30Si-5Fe alloy, primary Si formed first, followed by the δ phase precipitation and then eutectic solidification. During isothermal heat treatment of as-solidified alloys, phase transformation from the δ phase to equilibrium β phase began at the interface between δ phase and α-Al matrix and progressed toward the inside of δ phase with co-precipitation of Si particles due to the difference in composition between δ-Al4FeSi2 and β-Al5FeSi phases.
