Notes: Axon degeneration after disruption of fibre tracts in the mammalian nervous system is accompanied by myelin breakdown which leads to changes in its magnetic resonance properties. In two patients with pure motor strokes due to small ischaemic lesions restricted to the internal capsule, magnetic resonance imaging disclosed a narrow band of pathological signal increase descending band-like into the brain stem and ascending to the precentral gyrus, which corresponded to the well-known path of the pyramidal tract. The findings suggest that in man anterograde and possibly retrograde fibre degeneration can be traced in vivo by conventional magnetic resonance imaging techniques. Critical conditions are the presence of small, strategically located lesions, appropriate choice of imaging plane, and the interval between time of lesion and of imaging. This demonstration may open a new era for functional neuroanatomy of man.

Notes: The iron status of 54 male and 30 female elite skiers (biathlon, alpine and cross-country skiers) was studied during snow training and compared with that of relevant control groups. There was no significant difference between skiers and controls in mean Hb, serum ferritin, total iron-binding capacity, frequency of iron deficiency or anemia. Iron deficiency was found in 4 women (1 of whom was anemic) and 1 man, all in the cross-country group. The urinary iron concentration, investigated 1 day after hard cross-country training in 29 skiers, did not differ from that of a control group. In a separate study, 13 cross-country skiers were followed with repeated tests during a whole year. No change was seen in their iron status. Our results show that the iron status of both endurance and alpine skiers is comparable to that of a normal population and that there is no need for routine iron supplementation.

Notes: Summary A patient with familial neurogenic acroosteolytic defect of the foot was treated with a full thickness skin graft in order to prevent amputation of the lower leg. This graft proved to be of good weight bearing capacity. The clinical and morphological features and implications of the disease are discussed.

Notes: Summary In 15 rats, silastic implants were replaced by bone, cartilage, and dermal grafts after 6 to 8 weeks. At the same time, part of these grafts were also implanted outside the sheaths. The grafts were examined 6 to 9 months later. Within the silastic induced sheaths, only the vitality of the dermal grafts was impaired to any degree. Bone and cartilage took as well inside the induced sheaths as in a normal wound-bed. Since there were only thin membranes of the normal reaction type I observed in all animals, after 6 to 8 weeks, no conclusion can be drawn concerning the behaviour of the grafts within a thicker, more severe reaction type sheath.

Notes: Abstract The mechanism responsible for the decreased red blood cell (RBC) lifespan associated with feeding propylene glycol (PG)-containing diets was investigated to understand better how Heinz body-contained RBC are destroyed. Three cats were fed a diet containing 12% PG for 14 days and three other cats served as control. The experimental group developed reticulocytosis and increased Heinz body numbers. Red blood cell membrane immunoglobulih G (IgG) concentration and phagocytosis of RBC by peritoneal macrophages were lower in the PG group compared to the control group suggesting that neither IgG nor non-IgG-mediated phagocytosis was responsible for the RBC destruction. Osmotic fragility, rate of RBC proteolysis and mild mechanical fragility test results were not statistically different from controls. However, when RBC from cats fed PG were exposed to severe mechanical stress, their fragility were increased 2.2–2.8 times. Additionally, haptoglobin concentrations were decreased in the PG group. These data suggest that intravascular lysis may be involved in the pathogenesis of PG-induced RBC destruction.

Notes: Abstract We describe the algebra of matrices commuting with the action of the modular group on characters ofSU(N) k integrable representations. Using methods of finite quantum mechanics we find a canonical basis for this commutant over ℂ and prove the existence of an equivalent basis over ℚ with integral matrix elements. A final section is devoted to the case ofSU(3).

Notes: Abstract We show how the interplay between the fusion formalism of conformal field theory and the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation leads to explicit formulae for the singular vectors in the highest weight representations ofA 1 (1) .
