    Notizen: The Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC) at National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS) is the first heavy-ion accelerator complex dedicated to cancer therapy. HIMAC is equipped with two kinds of ion sources. The PIG ion source is an indirectly heated cathode type, which is operated with a very low-duty factor. The ECR ion source has a single closed ECR zone with 10 GHz microwaves. Both sources realize good stability and reproducibility with easy operation, and satisfy the requirements for radiotherapy. They have been successfully used for clinical trials since June of 1994, and several tens of cancer patients have already been treated with 290–400 MeV/u carbon beams. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Two-dimensional time-resolved density distributions of ground state barium (Ba) and copper (Cu) atoms as well as ground state yttrium oxide (YO) molecules have been measured by two-dimensional laser-induced fluorescence during a pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) process of YBa2Cu3O7−x. The gas phase of PLD has been investigated at ambient oxygen gas pressures between vacuum and 1 Torr. Characteristic behaviors have been observed for each of the measured ground state species. This is due to different oxidation schemes with the ambient oxygen gas. Whereas YO molecules mainly formed near the expanding front of the ablation plume, Ba atoms immediately oxidized at the plume front. Cu atoms, however, did not react during the gas phase of PLD. In addition, a well defined boundary of the expanding front of the ablation plume has been observed at oxygen gas pressures above 100 mTorr. Measurements of density distributions of emissive Ba, Cu, and YO are also discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Effects of cumulative ablation on the ejection of particulates and molecular species in pulsed-laser deposition are studied by Mie scattering and laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy, respectively. When a fresh target is ablated, a large amount of particulates are ejected during several initial shots and rapidly decreased within the first ten shots of ablation. This is due to the ejection of powder residues which are struck on the target surface during the polishing process. After this period, ejection of particulates increased gradually and almost saturated after 200 shots. The saturation characteristic is empirically formulated as a function of the number of cumulative ablations. On the other hand, ejection of molecular species rapidly decreases during the initial 500 ablations and afterwards decreases more slowly with further ablation. The effects of cumulative ablation on the particle ejection are discussed in conjunction with the structural modification of the ablated surface observed by the scanning electron microscope. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Carbon nitride films were synthesized on Si(100) substrate using relatively high-pressure radio-frequency magnetron sputtering of a graphite target in a nitrogen ambient. The influences of the substrate temperature and pressure on deposition rate and the film composition ratio N/C and C–N bonding were investigated using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The deposition rate had a maximum in the investigated pressure region and reduced as the substrate temperature increased. XPS spectra showed that the deposited films were very large N/C value up to 1.20, and unchanged after thermal treatment up to about 900 K, the latter confirmed by FTIR. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Spectrally narrow outputs of about 10 MHz (full width at half-maximum) are obtained from an optically pumped high-power (100 kW) D2O laser system by using the oscillator-amplifier configuration, in which a low-power single-mode output from a compact D2O laser with a short cavity length is amplified by a large D2O laser amplifier. In order to obtain spectrally narrow outputs from the amplifier, the following three conditions need to be satisfied: (1) the D2O gas pressure of the amplifier is adjusted in the range from 4 to 6 Torr; (2) the oscillation frequency of the compact laser is tuned in the range about 15–35 MHz lower than the Raman resonance frequency; and (3) the intensity of the compact laser beam injected into the amplifier is larger than about 50 W/cm2. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: A series of InGaAs films, compressively or tensilely strained, were grown on (001)InP substrates at 490 °C by gas source molecular beam epitaxy. Compressively strained (−0.5%) (and lattice matched) layers were morphologically stable, but layers grown under tension (+0.5 to +0.6% strain) developed facets on (113)A or (114)A planes. In the first stages of growth of films under tension, and throughout all stages of growth for the compressively strained films, a fine scale (10 nm wavelength) composition modulation was found in the [110] direction. In the later stages of growth of films under tension, the regions of composition segregation were confined to the peaks and valleys of the faceted surface. Regions of high and low stress concentration (the valleys and the peaks) exhibit In/Ga ratios higher or lower, respectively, than the flat faceted surfaces. The elastic strain energy built into the film, associated with the [110] composition modulation, depends on the ratio of the modulation wavelength to film thickness. In films grown under tension, facet coarsening provides a means for the system to reduce the strain energy associated with segregation. Faceting (and facet coarsening) leads to a reduction in the misfit strain energy stored in the film. However, an analysis of the first stages of faceting shows that faceting cannot be explained as a roughening transition. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Co–Ag granular films having various Co grain sizes are prepared by rf sputtering under various sputtering conditions. The Co grain sizes are derived from the magnetization curves by dividing them into ferromagnetic and superparamagnetic components. As the Co content decreases, the radii of the superparamagnetic Co grains, rg, decrease and the distances between the Co grains, tg, increase. The magnetoresistance is proportional to the volume density of superparamagnetic grains or related to krg3 exp(−tg/l) with k=3.8×102 μΩ/cm2 and l=20 Å, implying that the giant magnetoresistance is caused by the spin-dependent scattering in the inner part of the superparamagnetic Co grains as well as at the grain surfaces. Furthermore, it is found that the extraordinary Hall effect arises mainly from the side jump mechanism, and that significant perpendicular magnetic anisotropy appears in the Co composition range between 40 and 70 at %. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Since 1994 at the National Institute of Radiological Sciences HIMAC, the NIRS Penning ionized-gauge ion source (PIGIS) has so far been used for radiotherapy with carbon beams and for basic research with several ion species. The source can produce beams from H2 to Fe with a charge-to-mass ratio of between 1/7 and 1/2. It is a hot-cathode type with a filament, of which the lifetime is on the order of a week and the cathode on the order of 1 month, under a low-duty pulsed operation (≤0.5%) synchronized to the ring operation. This PIGIS can produce highly charged ions: for example, 1 e mA of Ar7+ or 500 eμ A of Si5+ ions (by sputtering) under the typical arc power of 5 kW in peak. This article describes the present status of the NIRS-PIGIS. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: In order to investigate the el led of occlusion on the skin, the flexor sides of both upper arms were covered with column-shaped closed chambers, 30 mm in outer diameter. 20 mm in inner diameter. and 5 mm in height, which were made of polyethylene loam. The tops of the chambers were sealed be plastic films with various levels of water vapor permeability to control moisture in each chamber. The raised chamber walls prevented direct contact between the skin and the plastic film. After 24 h of application, morphological changes of the skin surface were observed microscopically by the nitrocellulose-replica method. Although no visual alterations were found on all areas of occluded skin, microscopic evaluation showed that simple occlusion by films induced an increase in the number of deepened skin furrows on the skin surface. This increase was associated with lower water vapor permeability of the films, as well as with higher values of both temperature and humidity on the test day. Thus, since conditions which facilitate perspiration from the skin lend to cause skin irritation, prolonged exposure of the skin to sweat by simple occlusion may act as a primary skin irritant
