Notizen: Abstract This article reports the observation that there is a left/right asymmetry of the anterior columns of the fornix in the human brain. This asymmetry is present in the position of the two columns of the fornix in relation to the septum pellucidum. The left columna fornicis was found to be located caudal to the right, and this can be readily visualized on axial MRI scans. This difference was seen in most of the subjects, but in some subjects there was no left/right-difference and in a few the asymmetry was inverse. The asymmetry of the fornix with respect to the anterior-posterior axis was independent of the well-known dissimilar lateral ventricular volumes. However, the left/right difference in the position of the fornix was evident in subjects with or without differences in ventricular volumes. This suggests that the mechanism underlying the development of asymmetry of the fornix is independent of the mechanism leading to ventricular asymmetry. So far, no functional relevance has been ascribed to such differences in location. The finding is gaining interest in connection with recent reports of asymmetries in hippocampal subfields. Studies of fornical lesions should therefore give attention to possible side-to-side differences.

Notizen: Abstract The contribution of fecal pellets to the benthos of the southeastern shelf of the USA is investigated through an analytic model which considers pellet production by different stage groups of the genus Paracalanus. Model results indicate that the concentration and vertical flux of pellets is a function of producer size and consumer size and abundance. Nauplii and adults, respectively, produce daily on the average 50 and 13% of total pellet mass, yet contribute 4 and 63%, respectively, to the daily pellet flux. Most of the pellets produced are consumed or degraded in the water column, with only 0.2% of the average daily primary production reaching the seafloor (35 m) as fecal pellets. This contributes to an impoverished benthos, such as that found on the southeastern continental shelf.

Notizen: Abstract T2-weighted MRI scans of psychiatric patients with at least one white matter lesion (WML) were compared to 83 non-psychiatric controls with respect to WML number and distribution. MANOVA results in significant effects for sex, age and patient group with respect to WML number. In the psychiatric patients, infratentorial WML prevailed in organic psychoses. WML number was positively correlated with age with the exception of rith temporal lobe WML. Based on WML spatial distribution, four patient clusters were found. Clusters with widely distributed WML comprised older patients with late onset of illness; right frontal and temporal WML were associated with mania, euphoria and unstable mood.

Notizen: Summary Steroid receptor binding activity was evaluated in specimens of 28 human cerebral meningiomas using a dextran coated charcoal (DCC) assay. Oestrogen receptor (ER) binding activity at significant levels (〉 10 fmol/mg protein) could be detected only in three postmenopausal females (11% positive cases) at low levels. Positive progesterone receptor (PR) binding was detected in eighteen of the twenty-eight analysed meningioma tissues (64% positive cases). A significantly higher level of PR in male than in female patients could be demonstrated. The degree of peritumoural oedema could be evaluated from CT scans. There was no significant correlation between lack and amount of peritumoural oedema and quantity of cytosolic PR binding activity. Therefore we conclude, that peritumoural oedema is related to other factors and a possible role of PR activity in development of peritumoural oedema and growth control of meningiomas could not be demonstrated.

Notizen: Summary ¶ Purpose. In this prospective study the results of multimodal postoperative neuro-imaging were related to the survival of patients with high grade gliomas.  Methods. All 73 patients included underwent microsurgical tumour resection and had postoperative CT and transcranial sonography (TCS) examinations. In addition, 35 of the 73 patients received an early postoperative MRI. Patients were followed up for at least one year.  Findings. At the end of the 7 year study period 56 patients had died. The median survival time was 371 days. Survival rate was significantly higher in patients with anaplastic astrocytomas and inpatients displaying complete tumour resection on MRI (log-rank-test, p〈0.05) or a small postoperative residual tumour bulk on TCS (log-rank-test, p〈0.05). Cox proportional hazards model identified histological tumour grade, postoperative Karnofsky index, complete resection based on MRI and small postoperative residual tumour mass on TCS as independent predictors of survival.  Interpretation. This study demonstrates that early postoperative neuro-imaging has prognostic implications for the survival of patients with high grade gliomas. According to our results postoperative imaging with MRI and TCS is a valuable prognostic with regard to patient survival and should therefore be implemented in postoperative follow-up. It also helps to evaluate the efficacy of adjuvant therapy.
