Notes: Abstract A 34-year-old Japanese woman developed spiking fever, splenomegaly, arthritis, neutrophilia, hyperferritinaemia (22517 ng/ml), elevated C-reactive protein (9.1 mg/ml) and severe thrombocytopenia (1.7×104/μl). The patient had depressed antithrombin III activity and abnormally high concentrations of both fibrin degradation products and thrombin-antithrombin complexes. This condition was resistant to high-dose prednisolone therapy (120 mg/day) and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. We initiated oral methotrexate therapy (7.5 mg/week, orally) with a favourable outcome. The patient's spiking fever subsided on the first day of methotrexate administration. Elevated levels of ferritin and C-reactive protein in the sera rapidly normalised. Methotrexate rapidly improved the disease state which suggested that methotrexate act via modulation of cytokine production or secretion.

Notes: Summary We estimated the concentration of soluble IL-2R (sIL-2R) in the serum of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and examined the relationship between the serum levels of sIL-2R and clinical features or laboratory data. We found that elevated levels of sIL-2R were present in the serum of SLE patients with discoid rash, and sIL-2R concentrations were correlated with the soluble CD4 and soluble CD8 concentrations but not with classical serological marker, anti-DNA antibody or complement titer.

Notes: Summary ATP (1–1.2mm) was photoreleased from caged ATP (5mm) in skinned fibres from rat psoas muscle at 15–17° C, to examine the effects of ethylene glycol (EG; 20% in solvent) on the kinetics of isometric contraction. Muscle fibres were stretched by 0.5–2% before photolysis, so that force just before photolysis was almost equal to the steady-state force after photolysis. At the phase of steady-state contraction, force and 500 Hz-stifmess in the presence of EG were 50% and 70% of the controls, respectively, resulting in a higher stiffness-to-force with EG, as reported previously. Following photolysis, force fell before rising to a steady-state plateau. The estimated rate constant of the force decay was approximately 90 s−1, and in the presence of EG was 80–85% of the control. This suggested a small effect of EG on the crossbridge detachment induced by ATP. The rate of force redevelopment was approximately 70 s−1, and EG decreased this rate to 50% of the control. This suggested that EG greatly slows the transition of the crossbridges from the detached state to the reattached force-producing state. The time course of the stiffness signals was consistent with this interpretation. The high stiffness-to-force ratio with EG indicated that EG not only reduces the rate constants which were directly examined in this study but also modifies other aspects of the crossbridge reaction.

Notes: Abstract Plutonium 239,240 was measured using large-volume water samples from the North Pacific and its adjacent seas. The vertical profiles of239,240Pu show features that are similar to those reported in earlier papers with a subsurface maxima of around 660 m and a significant concentration increase in the North Pacific bottom waters. It became evident that the239,240Pu concentration in deep bottom water is proportional to the inventory of the nuclides in the overlying water column and that the appearent distribution ratios of the nuclides between deep-sea sediment and bottom water lie in a relatively narrow range of about 2×104 to 105, independent of sea area and warter depth. The latter implies that239,240Pu may follow a reversible-type partition process at a deep water/sediment interface. In order to substantiate this assumption, it is desirable to study the phenomenon for Pu as well as for other long-lived radionuclides, both artificial and natural. From this point of view, an analytical procedure for the successive determination of selected long-lived radionuclides was studied.
