    Notes: Abstract The oxygen-binding properties of haemolymph from laboratory-reared Artemia franciscana were investigated in vitro. Adult female brine shrimp without eggs were acclimated to seven different combinations of salinity and oxygen. The oxygen affinity (P50) of unprocessed haemolymph rises with acclimation oxygen partial pressure (PO2) up to normoxic values, after which no influence of oxygen occurs. The increase in P50 with acclimation PO2 can be explained by the change in proportion of each of three different haemoglobins in the haemolymph. Salinity acclimation has no effect on haemolymph P50. The effects of the different major salts [NaNO3, NaCl, Ca(NO3)2, Mg(NO3)2], pH, and the metal-binding ligand EGTA on the oxygen-binding properties of buffered haemolymph (of shrimp acclimated to 10‰ salinity) were also studied. Little or no effect of these salts could be found. A small Bohr effect (pH 6.5 to 9.1, ϕ=-0.11) was noted. Addition of EGTA caused a significant decrease of the oxygen affinity at concentrations up to 50 mmoll-1.

    Notes: Abstract A culture of juvenile Sepia officinalis L. was kept during summer 1985 in the aquaria of the “Station Marine”, Wimereux, France. During the first four months of juvenile development, oxygen consumption under increasing hypoxia was measured with a closed respirometer. The experiments revealed a high regulatory capacity of juvenile S. officinalis. The critical oxygen concentrations were calculated and their ontogenetical evolution was studied. The critical oxygen concentration increased with increasing development. A linear relationship emerged between the critical oxygen concentration and the logarithm of the wet weight [COc (mg O2 l-1)=-0.393+0.893×log10(W w )]. The decreasing regulatory capacity of growing S. officinalis is most probably related to adaptations to a changing ecological environment during development. Another possibility is a physiological change, most probably related to the shift from embryonic to adult hemocyanin.

    Notes: Abstract Adult Sepia officinalis L. were caught in June 1984, in the coastal waters of Wimereux (France). Deposition of the eggs took place in the seawater aquaria of the “Station Marine”. The oxygen consumption of S. officinalis was measured during embryonic and juvenile development. Aerobic metabolism occurs as soon as the early embryonic Stage 21. Oxygen diffuses through the initially thick egg shell; the oxygen level in the perivitelline liquid reaches a maximal value just before hatching (116.7±6.9 mm Hg). Hatchings display only a slight increase in oxygen consumption compared to embryos in the last stage of development. Respiration experiments with 40 d old juveniles showed that oxygen consumption increases with temperature, but is not affected by photoperiod. Experiments under increasing hypoxia revealed that S. officinalis juveniles are good regulators and maintain a constant oxygen consumption in the range of 4 to 7 mg O2l-1. Juveniles successfully recover from an hypoxic stress of 2 mg O2l-1 maintained for 1 h. This suggests that the respiratory pigments (pre-hemocyanins) of 40 d-old juveniles have a high oxygen affinity and/or that these juveniles have the ability to adapt to anaerobic conditions.

The new antibiotic affects the chitchin biosynthesis. Its structure was identified by mass spectrometry of the products obtained after chemical degradation. Nikkomycin is a nucleoside-peptide antibiotic consisting of uracil, an amino hexuronic acid and a new amino acid containing a pyridin ring.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of the addition of hematin on the activities of nitrite reductase and catalase was studied with cell suspensions of strains of lactobacillus species. In cells of Lactobacillus plantarum grown under aerobic or anaerobic conditions nitrite reductase was present. This activity was not exhibited by cells of L. curvatus and only rarely by L. sake. In addition, catalase activity was detected in aerobically grown cells only, with all strains of L. plantarum and L. sake; again L. curvatus was devoid of this activity. Ammonia was formed as the main product of nitrite reduction by L. plantarum. With lactate as the electron donor, the end products of carbohydrate catabolism were carbon dioxide, acetoin and acetate. The activities of nitrite reductase and catalase in strains of lactobacillus species may be used for optimizing the quality of starter cultures applied for the production of raw sausages.

    Notes: Summary Using a special tetrazolium salt technique, a striking correlation was observed between Na+ concentration of the incubation medium and the formation of formazan catalyzed by glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) in glutaniatergic neuropil areas of the hippocampal formation, cerebellum, and other brain regions. Na+ concentrations of 130–150 mmol/l caused maximal formazan production. The GDH catalyzed sodium-dependent increase in formazan production is suggested to be a consequence of the sodium dependence of glutamate uptake in glutaniatergic brain structures supplying the enzyme with substrate.

    Notes: Summary The effect of Arwin® on peripheral arterial occlusive disease has been studied in two multicentre trials. In the first, in cases of severe peripheral arterial circulatory disorders of the lower extremities with permanent rest pain (stages III and III + IV according to Fontaine) Arwin® had a better intravenous therapeutic effect than anticoagulant treatment. A further trial was done to investigate whether subcutaneous administration of Arwin® would have an effect superior to classical conservative therapy with vasodilator drugs in this type of disease. The results were assessed by sequential analysis. Arwin® was again shown to be a much better treatment. Problems of medical documentation and statistics are discussed in relation to the value of sequential analysis.

    Notes: Summary Nephrotoxic drugs may account for approximately at least 20 % of clinically observed cases of acute renal failure in whom tubular lethal or sublethal damage is a predominant finding. Acute toxic tubular cell injury is characterized by loss of cellular polarization, intrinsic energy deficiency, calcium overload, release of toxic proteases and free oxygen radicals, derangement of the cytoskeleton, and vacuolar transformation of brush border microvilli. These events may finally lead to irreversible cell death. Shedding of membrane enzymes and cytoskeletal components in urine (kidney tissue proteinuria) may serve as a noninvasive early marker for assessing tubular cell injury. Successful recovery of renal function depends on early repair of lethally or sublethally damaged nephrons, in which intrinsic nephrogenic adaptive and proliferative responses cooperate in concert with auto/para/-juxtacrine growth promoting factors and cytokines. Exogenously administered growth factors may enhance renal cell recovery, as shown in animal models. Increased expression of immediate early genes in tubular cells after renal injury reflects the ongoing mitogenic activity necessary for reepithelialization and remodeling (new, polarized, differentiated cells). Further progress in understanding the molecular mechanisms of renal tubular injury will probably influence the diagnostic modalities and therapeutic approaches to acute drug induced renal failure.
