Notes: Spectrally narrow outputs of about 10 MHz (full width at half-maximum) are obtained from an optically pumped high-power (100 kW) D2O laser system by using the oscillator-amplifier configuration, in which a low-power single-mode output from a compact D2O laser with a short cavity length is amplified by a large D2O laser amplifier. In order to obtain spectrally narrow outputs from the amplifier, the following three conditions need to be satisfied: (1) the D2O gas pressure of the amplifier is adjusted in the range from 4 to 6 Torr; (2) the oscillation frequency of the compact laser is tuned in the range about 15–35 MHz lower than the Raman resonance frequency; and (3) the intensity of the compact laser beam injected into the amplifier is larger than about 50 W/cm2. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Several improvements in the high-voltage heavy-ion-beam probe (HIBP) are discussed. (1) It is clearly found that the precision slide mount of the detector plates 30° parallel to the base electrode is very effective for the determination of the in-plane entrance angle of the beam in the analyzer to estimate the error in the potential measurement. (2) A two-staged optical trap in the HIBP greatly reduced the effect of the UV radiation in the analyzer. (3) A multiple-plate detector up to 13 measurement points clearly showed the direction of the propagation of the turbulence and path-integral effects. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary ¶ Background. Mild hypothermia provides cerebral protection against ischaemic insults in various animal models. We compared systemic and cerebral oxygenation between mild hypothermic and normothermic management in 60 patients with acute subarachnoid haemorrhage who underwent clipping of cerebral aneurysms.  Method. The temperature in the pulmonary artery was maintained at 36°C in 28 patients and was reduced to 34°C in 32 patients. Parameters in the systemic and cerebral haemodynamics from pulmonary artery and internal jugular vein catheters were compared between the two groups immediately after the induction of anaesthesia (T1), and just before temporary occlusion or aneurysm clipping (T2).  Findings. Cardiac index, oxygen delivery index, oxygen consumption index, and oxygen saturation of the jugular bulb were significantly lower at T2 in hypothermic group (H) (2.9±0.6 L/min/m2, 400.8±106.3 ml/min·m2, 87.0±14.8 ml/min·m2, 55.2±6.6%, respectively) than in normothermic group (N) (3.7±0.6, 521.0±105.5, 109.9±21.7, 60.9±6.6) (p〈0.05). The arterial lactate and arteriojugular difference in oxygen content were significantly higher in H (2.3±1.3 mmol/L, 6.5±1.5 ml/dl, respectively) than in N (1.7±1.0, 5.6±1.2) (p〈0.05). Arteriojugular differences in carbon dioxide tension and hydrogen ion content were significantly lower at T2 in H (−10.8±2.1 mm Hg, −6.4±1.3 nmol/L, respectively) than in N (−8.9±2.8, −5.3±1.0) (p〈0.05).  Interpretation. The balance between oxygen supply and demand systemically and in the brain may worsen during aneurysm surgery for patients with acute subarachnoid haemorrhage under mild hypothermia. Oxygenation of the brain and the whole body should be monitored closely during this surgery, and adequate circulatory assistance is recommended under mild hypothermia.

Notes: Abstract Spectrally narrow, pulsed outputs consisting of almost a single mode have been obtained from an optically-pumped high-power (200kW) D2O laser by adopting the injection seeding method, where single-mode radiation (seed pulse) from a low-power, compact D2O laser has been injected into the main D2O laser. Spectrally narrow outputs with high power having spectral widths as narrow as 5 MHz have been obtained, when the seed pulses with frequency tuned to one longitudinal mode of the main D2O laser have been injected at a time sufficiently before the lasing of the main laser took place. The experimental results have been compared with those of numerical simulation modified to include the injection field with varying injection times.

Notes: The electron spin resonance studies have been carried out in the temperature range 130–300 K on semiconducting β-FeSi2 single crystals grown by a chemical vapor transport technique. Two anisotropic doublets with apparent g factors in the range 2.025–2.05 and 1.98–2.03, as well as one complex signal having an isotropic g factor of 2.0195 and exhibiting a five-line hyperfine structure, have been detected. The doublet signals are believed to arise from spin triplet (S=1) states of, presumably, substitutional Ni2+ transition ions, whereas the signal exhibiting the hyperfine structure has been attributed to the spin of a hole, captured by silicon vacancy and interacting with nuclear spins of four iron atoms in the first shell surrounding of the silicon vacancy. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The sputtering deposition using an electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) microwave plasma was tried to use in the fabrication of the Co–Cr perpendicular magnetic recording media. As the Ar sputtering gas pressure increased from 4×10−2 to 8×10−2 Pa, the Co(002) x-ray diffraction peak intensity increased and the half-value width of the rocking curve Δθ50 decreased. This result implies that Co–Cr films with high perpendicular orientation and good crystallinity are achieved at high Ar gas pressure. The Co–Cr films deposited at a target to substrate distance of 230 mm had a good preferred crystal orientation (Δθ50 less than 4°), high perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (Hk higher than 4 kOe), and high perpendicular coercivity over 1400 Oe even though the Co–Cr thickness is as small as about 50 nm, and no underlayers were introduced. Thus, the ECR sputtering has high potential in the deposition of the Co–Cr films for ultrahigh density recording media. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: It was reported that La3Co is an interesting superconductor which has a critical temperature Tc of 4.5 K. Pr3Co and Nd3Co are ferromagnetic materials, which have Curie temperatures of 10 and 25 K, respectively. It was claimed that their magnetic structures are associated with the canting moment reflected to the symmetry of their crystal structure. In this paper we present the results of the specific heat measurement in these compounds in the temperature range from 2 to 30 K by a standard adiabatic heat pulse method. Two phase transitions are observed at 8 and 25 K in Nd3Co. One of them at 25 K corresponds to the Curie temperature mentioned above. Another is the transition corresponds to the moment reorientation, which was observed in the thermomagnetic curves and electrical resistivity measurement. This results claim that the moments are canted in this compounds. Magnetic entropy reaches 90% of R ln 2 at 25 K. However, it increases above the Curie temperature because the crystalline electric field effects plays an important role in this compounds. There are two peaks of 10 and 12 K in Pr3Co. The above temperature corresponds the Curie temperature but another was unknown. Thus we performed the specific heat measurement for Pr7Co3, which is very close to the Pr3Co in the phase diagram. We could observe the phase transition at 12 K for Pr7Co3 in the specific heat measurement and electric resistivity measurement. It is clear that the phase transition at 12 K comes from impurity of Pr7Co3 in our Pr3Co compound. We prepare the good quality sample of Pr3Co and try to examine the specific heat measurement. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The low-energy (about 30 eV) ion etching of InP with an excellent vertical sidewall profile, smooth surface, and a high etch rate (more than 1000 A(ring)/min) has been demonstrated in an electron cyclotron resonance plasma using a Cl2/N2 mixture. Surface analysis by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and plasma diagnostics by optical emission spectroscopy suggest that the etching mechanism is dominated by the reduction of Cl neutral radical density by N2 dilution and the formation of InN and P3N5 due to the reaction between the atomic nitrogen in the Cl2/N2 plasma and the InP substrate. The success of this technique appears to be based on a new InP dry etching concept which controls the volatility of PClx (x=1–5) products, thus balancing the desorption rate of InClx (x=1–3) products, in contrast to the conventional reactive ion etching method which enhances the desorption of nonvolatile InClx products by high-energy ion bombardment. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
