    Notes: Magnetic properties of giant magnetostrictive Sm–Fe and Sm–Fe–B thin films are systematically investigated over a wide composition range from 14.1 to 71.7 at. % Sm. The amount of B added ranges from 0.3 to 0.8 at. %. The microstructure mainly consists of an amorphous phase in the intermediate Sm content range from 20 to 45 at. %. Together with an amorphous phase, crystalline phases of Fe and Sm also exist at low and high ends of the Sm content, respectively. Well-developed in-plane anisotropy is formed over the whole composition range, except for the low Sm content below 15 at. % and the high Sm content above 55 at. %. As the Sm content increases, the saturation magnetization decreases linearly and the coercive force tends to increase, with the exception of the low Sm content where very large magnitudes of the saturation magnetization and the coercive force are observed due to the existence of the crystalline α-Fe phase. The coercive force is affected rather substantially by the B addition, resulting in lower values of the coercive force in the practically important Sm content range of 30–40 at. %. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A triode-type field emission display has been fabricated using carbon nanotube emitters. Purified single walled carbon nanotubes were selectively deposited onto a cathode electrode in a triode-type structure by an electrophoresis. Emission current was modulated with gate potentials of 100–300 V. A high brightness of 1000 cd/m2 with uniform emission was obtained at 900 V at the anode and 200 V at the gate. The fluctuation of emission current was found to be less than 5% in a fully sealed field emission display. Selective deposition of carbon nanotubes by electrophoresis shows high feasibility for triode-type field emission displays. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We investigated whether human β2 adrenoceptor (β2AR) gene polymorphisms are associated with the pressor response to laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation. Ninety-two patients undergoing elective surgery under general anaesthesia were enrolled into this study. Arterial systolic pressure, heart rate and rate pressure product were measured before induction of anaesthesia and 1 min following laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation. Genomic DNA was then used to identify the β2AR-16 and β2AR-27 genes using an allele-specific polymerase chain reaction method. Using multiple linear regression models, controlling for age, sex, weight, baseline blood pressure, heart rate and rate pressure product, we found that patients who possessed the glutamic acid homozygote of β2AR-27 produced significantly greater changes in mean arterial pressure and rate pressure products than patients with the glutamine homozygote of β2AR-27 (β coefficient for mean blood pressure = 11.81, β coefficient for pulse−pressure product = 8.76, both p-values = 0.023). These findings suggest that genetic variability in the human β2AR gene polymorphisms may be associated with the pressor response to laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation.

    Notes: The monthly variation in reproductive cycle, condition factor (fatness), gonad index (GI), ovarian egg diameter and biochemical composition [RNA, DNA content and their ratio RNA/DNA (R/D)] were compared to determine the spawning season of the purplish Washington clam, Saxidomus purpuratus, collected from the west sea of Taean, Korea. All these factors were correlated to the spawning season from May to October. Monthly variation and concentration of the R/D ratio especially represented indicative information about the processes of gonad development and spawning patterns. The increases in R/D ratio in the ovaries corresponded with increases in ovarian egg diameters and the GI during the spawning season. The peak of R/D and RNA content in females was a good indicator of sexual maturation and the DNA content in males. During winter between November and January, the value of fatness, GI, egg size, RNA and DNA content were lower than in other seasons, indicating depletion of energy reserves and lower metabolic demands because of colder temperatures.

    Notes: How the ac effective permeability (μe) correlates with dc magnetic properties over a wide frequency range of 1 to 1000 kHz was studied, in an effort to understand the magnetization behavior of the Co-based amorphous alloy of Metglas 2714A subject to an ac magnetic field. In the low-frequency range up to 50 kHz, the correlations between μe and the dc initial permeability, and between μe and the coercivity are found to be good, the correlation coefficient being positive and negative, respectively. No definite correlation is observed with the dc maximum permeability. At high frequencies ranging from about 200 to 1000 kHz, the correlations between μe and the dc maximum permeability, and between μe and the coercivity are observed to be good, the correlation coefficient being negative and positive, respectively. The correlation of μe with the dc initial permeability is poor in this high-frequency range. The correlation with the remanence ratio is found to be rather different from the other three; the ac permeability exhibits a maximum at the value of remanence ratio of 0.5–0.6 at frequencies up to 200 kHz but, at frequencies higher than 500 kHz, it decreases linearly with the remanence ratio. From the correlation results it is considered that the dominant magnetization mechanism is the domain wall motion at frequencies up to 50 kHz and it is spin rotation at frequencies higher than 500 kHz.

    Notes: In this immunocytochemical study on the constitutive expression of Pax-7 protein in the postnatal chicken brain, Pax-7 showed region and cell type specific expression. In the optic tectum, only cells in grey matter showed positive immunoreactivities (IRs), whereas those in the white matters did not show any IRs. In thalamic nuclei and several pontine nuclei, we also localized Pax-7 positive IRs. On the contrary, in the cerebellum, Pax-7 was mainly localized within the Bergmann glia, whereas Purkinje cells did not show any IRs. In double immunolabelling studies, most of the Pax-7 IRs did not originate from neuroglial cells such as oligodendrocytes, microglia or astrocytes, but from neurons, with the exception of Bergmann glia in the cerebellum. The presence of Pax-7 IRs in the adult chicken brain could suggest that Pax-7 might play a role in maintaining normal physiological function in some postnatal chicken brain cells.
