    Notes: Abstract The growth of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) is severely inhibited by boron starvation, but a foliar treatment with boric acid can transitorily alleviate the deficiency symptoms. The 10B(n ,α)7 Li nuclear reaction has been used to study boron transport in the plant after foliar application. More than 98% of the boron supplied remained at the point where it was applied to the leaves, and less than 2% was useful to the growth of the treated plant. This small “efficient” portion of boron was quite mobile. It was distributed to the different parts of the plant, then was transferred from the oldest parts to the newly formed leaves. Physiological and agronomical implications of these data are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract There is a steady and nonlinear relationship between the levels of both phenylpyruvic acid (PPA) and o-hydroxyphenylacetic acid (oOPAA) in urine and the plasma levels of phenylalanine (phe) in children more than two years of age with phenylketonuria (PKU). If phe levels in blood rise above 0.35 mM (5.8 mg/100 ml) both aromatic acids are found regularly in urine. Typically, urinary concentrations of PPA are about 5 times higher than those of oOPAA. This report is based on the analysis of 94 samples from 51 children, on or off diet.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Eine gaschromatographische Methode zum Nachweis von Tetrodotoxin im Obduktionsmaterial wird beschrieben. Das Derivat (2-Amino-6-hydroxymethyl-8-hydroxychinazolin, C9-Base), das sich durch die Einwirkung der Alkalilauge auf Tetrodotoxin gewinnen ließ, wurde schließlich durch Gaschromatographic nachgewiesen. Die Massenspektren der trimethylsilyerten C9-Base werden neben den Ergebnissen der gaschromatographischen Untersuchung von acht tödlichen Intoxikationsfällen angegeben.
    Notes: Abstract A gas Chromatographic method for the detection of tetrodotoxin in autopsy material is described. The derivative (2-amino-6-hydroxymethyl-8-hydroxyquinazoline, C9-base), which was obtained from tetrodotoxin by alkali treatment, was finally detected by gas chromatography. The mass spectra of the trimethylsilylated (TMS) C9-base are presented together with the result of a gas Chromatographic investigation of 8 cases of fatal intoxication.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Für die Bestimmung von freiem Pentachlorphenol in der Luft und im Blut wurden leistungsfähige chromatographische Routineverfahren ausgearbeitet. Für die Raumluftbestimmung wird Pentachlorphenol durch Einleiten von Luft in einer Vorlage angereichert und nach Aufarbeitung in freier Form durch Hochdruck-Flüssigkeits-Chromatographie quantitativ erfaßt. Alternativ kann die Analyse nach Derivatisierung durch Kapillar-Gaschromatographie erfolgen. Freies Pentachlorphenol im Vollblut wird nach Aufarbeitung und Derivatisierung durch Kapillar-Gaschromatographie in Verbindung mit dem Elektroneneinfang-Detektor quantitativ bestimmt. Bei den beschriebenen chromatographischen Methoden sind die Eichkurven über den angegebenen Konzentrationsbereich linear. Die gaschromatographische Trennung blieb über den gesamten Untersuchungszeitraum völlig reproduzierbar. Die problemlose Derivatisierung läßt die beschriebene gaschromatographische Methode in Verbindung mit einem automatischen Probengeber für das biological monitoring auch größerer Kollektive geeignet erscheinen.
    Notes: Summary Efficient chromatographic procedures for the determination of free pentachlorophenol in air and in blood have been developed. Free pentachlorophenol from the indoor environment is preconcentrated in an impinger. Following a simple extraction, it is detected by high performance liquid chromatography without derivatisation. An alternate method is capillary gas chromatography of a suitable derivative. Unchanged pentachlorophenol in whole blood is similarly derivatised and determined quantitatively by capillary gas chromatography using an electron capture detector. The calibration curves of the described chromatographic methods were linear within the specified concentration range. Reproducibility of gas chromatographic separation remained unchanged during the whole research period. Owing to its relative simplicity, the described gas chromatographic method is advantageous for the biological monitoring of large collectives.

R) configuration of isovaline (=2-ethylalanine) was proved for the peptide antibiotics antiamoebin, Tü 165 (CBS 382.62), stilbellin, samarosporin (=emerimicin IV), suzukacillin B (A), trichotoxin A-40 and A-50. This contradicts the previously reported L-configuration for isovaline in antiamoebin and emerimicin IV. The configuration was determined by GC of the N-trifluoroacetyl-isovaline n-propyl ester on glass capillary columns coated with the chiral stationary phase N-propionyl-L-valine tert.-butylamide polysiloxane (Chirasil Val). The D-configuration of the isovaline from trichotoxin A-40 was also established independently using GC of N-pentafluoro-propionyl-isovaline (+)-3-methyl-2-butyl esters on glass capillary columns coated with OV 17.

    Notes: Summary Porous silica microparticles designed for modern liquid chromatography have proven effective in gas chromatography. Columns of 35–50 cm gave plate heights as low as 3.3 particle diameters and speeds of 2400 theoretical plates per second or 500 effective theoretical plates per second. Inlet pressures up to 70 atmospheres were required using hydrogen as carrier gas. The particles as received were too retentive for fast chromatography and gave asymmetric peaks. A coating of fluorosilicone oil overcame both problems. Other coatings were less effective. Bonded phases proved less satisfactory on both counts and also gave substantially less efficient columns and greater flow resistance. Column efficiency and flow resistance were sharply dependent on physical properties of the particles. The most efficient packing was clearly spherical particles of 5–10 μm diameter with narrow size distribution, pore diamters about 50 nm, BET surface areas of 25–50 m2/g and surfaces modified with trifluoropropyl silicone. A six-component hydrocarbon sample was separated in 33 s with a resolution of 4 for the most difficult pair and in 2.6 s with a minimal resolution. Performance was limited by end effects and by available pressure so that much better performance can be expected from longer columns and higher pressures.

    Notes: Summary Xylenol isomers can be resolved on most polyols (sugars or sugar alcohols) and polyethers (polyethylene glycol or polypropylene glycol) with hydrogen-bonding interaction. They are separated on vinical polyols which have more hydroxy hydrogen than tetrol, and even on vicinal triol when its hydroxy hydrogen is acidic (stronger proton donor). The stronger is the hydrogen bonding interaction between xylenols and the liquid phase, the better is the separation of 2,4- and 2,5-xylenol, and the poorer the separation of 2,4-and 2,3-xylenol.

    Notes: A method is presented for the simultaneous determination of a wide range of carboxylic acids and phenols in water. Extractive alkylation is used with the tetrabutylammonium ion as counter ion and pentafluorobenzylbromide as alkylating agent. Extracts are analyzed by glass capillary gas chromatography and electron capture detection. Using one ml of water sample, the detection limit lies in the range of 1-10 μg/l. Application has been made to the analysis of steam condensate and domestic sewage effluent.

    Notes: Unequal elution of sample components of different volatility out of the syringe needle is one of the major causes for discrimination occuring during the injection, i.e. the phenomena which results in peak areas for the high boiling compounds which are too small compared with the volatiles. This problem, associated with all vaporizing injectors that are used with syringes, can be minimized by careful choice of the needle handling technique. Various methods are compared experimentally. The “solvent flush” method is discussed in detail and demonstrated to be ineffective for reducing losses in the syringe needle. The “hot needle” technique, where the empty needle is preheated in the injector before pushing the plunger, was found to be superior or equal to an improved “solvent flush” method (which included preheating the needle and omitting the air plug between sample and flushing solvent. Generally it was found that the discrimination due to the syringe needle was reduced for larger sample volumes, although no further changes were noticed when these exceeded 2.5 to 3μl.

    Notes: A simple but effective GC approach to odour evaluation and fraction collection with capillary columns is described. An allglass device splits the column effluent, with one splitter arm going to an FID. For odour evaluation, the other splitter arm is led via teflon tubing to the nose. Off-line heart-cutting is carried out by collecting the split effluent on a glass capillary microtrap, the inner walls of which are coated with OV-101. This allows recovery of nanogram amounts of material. Multipass operation or repeated collection leads to preparative capillary GC for further spectroscopic investigation. These techniques do not involve sophisticated equipment or valves. Applications of this type of smell analysis, heart-cutting and enrichment in the analysis of Rhododendron fragrantissimum essential oil, black pepper essential oil and hop essential oil, illustrating the versatility of the systems, are presented.

They are relatively easy to prepare, but there is nevertheless a great need for helpful practical instructions.     Notes: Basic expressions are derived for both the retention time and the effective separation factor in serially coupled GC columns. The retention time is determined by two main parameters. The first is the fractional time spent by an unretarded solute in each column which, in turn, is determined by the relative column lengths and flow velocities through each column. The second parameter is the relative mass distribution coefficient of a particular solute in each column; a variable that can be adjusted by changing the relative temperatures of the columns. The expression for the effective separation factor relates the measured separation factor for the series combination to the separation factors on the individual columns, the fractional time spent by an unretarded peak in each column, as well as the relative values of the mass distribution coefficients of a particular solute on the different columns.

    Notes: 1-(o-methoxyphenoxy)-3-isopropylamino-2-propanol hydrochloride (moprolol, OmeralR), is a new β-adrenergic blocking agent. A gas chromatographic method for determining unchanged moprolol in human biological fluids has been developed. After solvent extraction, a bis-trifluoroacetyl derivative was formed and measured by an electron capture detector. The quantification was checked by using an internal standard (pronethalol), which was added to all samples. The electron capture response was linear between 10 and 500 ng/ml. To avoid contamination of the peaks, careful extraction was imperative. The main advantages offered by the described method are: specificity, high sensitivity (10 ng.ml-1) and the small amount of biological fluids (1 ml plasma a. e.) required.

    Notes: The sensitivity of an FID may change when the carrier gas flow rate changes during a chromatographic run. Sample parts which are eluted at reduced FID sensitivity produce a reduced peak area, hence are discriminated as compared to other components. Sensitivity changes were studied for hydrogen as carrier gas. For the detector tested, differences in the carrier gas flow rates of 1 ml/min shifted the FID sensitivity by 1 to 5% (depending on the fuel gas supply). Thus the stability of the sensitivity is no longer ensured as soon as the carrier gas flow rate is changed manually or by an automatic programmer during an analysis. Sensitivity drifts may also occur during temperature programmed runs with a pressure regulated carrier gas supply since the gas flow through the capillary drops with increasing temperature. Such shifts in the response became noticeable as soon as relatively high carrier gas flow rates combined with long range temperature programmes were used. The typical patterns of such discriminations are shown, closing with a discussion on the possibilities for minimizing such undesired effects.

    Notes: A gas-chromatographic separation of underivatized steroids is described, in which the liquid crystal N,Ń-bis(p-phenylbenzylidene)α,α′-bi-p-toluidine (BPhBT) was used isothermally at 265°C for the stationary phase. The nematic range of this crystal is 247 to 403°C. Use of the BPhBT crystal allowed operations in a temperature range where steroids are volatile and unlikely to display broad elution peaks and long retention times.With columns precoated with 2.5 weight percent of BPhBT, steroids containing minor structural differences in the ring system were readily differentiated. For example, 5-androsten-17α-ethinyl-3β, 17β-diol was found to elute more rapidly than its 3-keto analog, ethisterone. Ethisterone was distinguished readily also from its 19-nor analog, norethisterone. Additionally, differences in side-chain functionality and resultant molecular dimensions facilitated the separation of steroids of identical ring structure, as in the comparison of cholesterol with methyl 3β-hydroxy-5-cholenate and 25-hydroxycholesterol.An enhancement of separation according to the molecular length-to-breadth ratio was observed; in general, the larger this length-to-breadth ratio, the greater the retention period on the column.

    Notes: A heated injection system for a microprocessor-controlled GC has been developed for the (GC)2 analysis of the volatile phase of whole smoke of a cigarette. Effects of injection port temperature and the presence of a Cambridge filter pad are demonstrated. Chromatograms are shown for smoke samples with and without a Cambridge Filter with the sample valve oven at 25°, 165° and 205°C. The use of a flame ionization and a nitrogen-phosphorous detector is illustrated.

    Notes: The promising technique of controlling chromatographic selectivity by the adjustment of individual column temperatures in systems of series-coupled columns is investigated by means of a general model incorporating the effects of temperature and mobile phase compressibility. Expressions are derived for the linear flow velocity, the effective partition coefficient and the retention time for a system of n columns assuming an ideal mobile phase gas, under conditions of constant overall pressure drop and neglect of the temperature dependence of the mobile phase viscosity. The results indicate the importance of thermodynamic parameters, relative to parameters influencing the linear flow velocity, in determining the effect of temperature on the chromatographic retention time. Numerical results are illustrated graphically for two-column systems which are discussed in greater detail. Switching of columns is also discussed and it is shown that even if thermodynamic contributions remain unchanged, non-thermodynamic contributions have a notice-able effect.

    Notes: “Leaching” or “etching” by strong mineral acids seems to be a necessary pretreatment step for the most commonly used deactivation procedures of glass capillaries by reaction with either polyethylene glycol or silylation reagents. The acidic sites which are formed on the surface during this acid treatment cannot be completely removed by the subsequent deactivation process. This drawback can be overcome by performing the leaching with water vapour, resulting in an accumulation of cations at the surface and a decrease in the number of silanol groups. Capillaries of this type show excellent properties for the chromatography of strongly basic compounds. After the wash-out of the alkaline surface layer, the acidity of the support is suited for the chromatography of strongly basic as well as strongly acidic compounds. Due to a lack of reactive acidic sites, special deactivation procedures have to be applied to capillaries produced in this way.

    Notes: A new surface pretreatment for the preparation of wall-coated open tubular (WCOT) glass capillary columns has been evaluated. This technique involves the application of a non-extractable layer of Superox™-4, a 4,000,000 MW polyethylene glycol, to the glass surface as a pretreatment and deactivation agent. Unlike other polyethylene glycols, Superox-4 is stable at high temperatures (〉 300°C) in the absence of oxygen, coats smoothly onto a bare glass surface and resists droplet formation. WCOT columns (SE-54, Carbowax 20M, and SP-2250) prepared using this technique are compared to columns prepared using a modified Grob [2,3] BaCO3 procedure. The Superox-4 pretreated columns were equal or superior in quality to the BaCO3 pretreated columns, based on the appearance of an activity standard and the effective theoretical plates (Neff) per meter. Chromatograms showing practical application of the WCOT columns prepared using both methods is given.

    Notes: Glass capillary columns are ideal for analysis of urinary steroid profiles (i.e. the total steroid neutral fraction without prior separation into sub-groups).In this paper performance of both SCOT and wide-bore WCOT columns has been compared, resulting in no significant quantitative difference on urine extracts run as trimethylsilyl ether derivatives. However, because of increased efficiency the WB-WCOT column exhibited more sensitivity in measurement of small amounts of 11-ox-aetiocholanolone. Sensitivity of other steroids was greatly enhanced by use of either SCOT or WB-WCOT, leading to an almost tenfold increase over conventional packed columns (e.g. androsterone and aetiocholanolone 〈 40 μg per 24 h urine sample). A simple splitless injection system (based on a design of Dr. W. Greenaway, Oxford University) is presented.Experiments were also carried out using a SCOT column in conjunction with an FM-electron capture detector. Whilst efficiency was impaired due to the design of the detector, use of He (carrier) and N2 (make up gas) showed that several steroid derivatives could be easily measured at well below the 10-10 g level with much more rapid retention times than with a 1½m packed column. Highly successful separation of 19 amino acids (as fluoro-acyl derivatives) was achieved in 35 minutes using a SCOT (30 m) SP2100 column.

    Notes: Combination of various GC detectors by using a Varian effluent splitter with glass capillary columns has been found to be a rapid procedure for profiling organics extracted from sludges and river sediments. The selectivity and the increased sensitivity of the thermionic nitrogen-phosphorus detector (TSD), the electron capture detector (ECD), and the flame photometric detector (FPD) over the flame ionization detectors (FID) or mass spectrometers allow the detection of compounds present at trace levels without need for extensive sample cleanup. Furthermore, the combination of two selective detectors may supplement the information with regard to the chemical functionalities required for structure elucidation.

    Notes: The point of our published papers since 1957 is reviewed. The relations between the required value of peak resolution, K1 (or R), and peak separation, K3 (eqn 9); K1 and relative accuracy of a peak height quantitative method, Ph (eqn. 10); K1 and relative accuracy of a peak area method, Pa, (eqn. 12) at different concentration ratios, φ, are derived. The final result in Table 2 shows a large influence of φ on the required value of K1.The approximately linear relation between peak width and retention value (eqn. 18) exists not only in GC. but also in HPLC. Plate height values H1 and H∞ for a solute with capacity ratio, k′, equal to unity or approaching infinity, respectively, are used to evaluate the column efficiency (eqn. 20). The measuring methods (eqn. 21,22,23) and parameters effecting on H1 and H∞ are given for GC packed column (eqn. 24), GC open tubular column (eqn. 25) and HPLC (eqn. 26). In the light of this, columns of high efficiency were developed. Some typical chromatograms for high speed analysis and separation of complex mixtures are given.

    Notes: The effect of small amounts of low molecular weight polypropylene oxide on the rheological properties of talc-filled polypropylene composites was studied experimentally using a capillary viscometer. The elastic behavior of the system was investigated by exit pressure and die swell methods. Initial studies showed that the talc filler does not influence the viscosity of the polypropylene but decreases the elasticity of the polymer system. Addition of oligomer concentration in a 40 wt percent talc-filled polypropylene not only decreases the viscosity but also further decreases considerably the elasticity of the filled polymer composite. In both cases about 3 wt percent oligomer cone entration appears to be optimal, and further addition of oligomer does not significantly influence the rheological characteristics of the talc-filled polypropylene composite.

    Notes: A large variety of permselective membranes were prepared by radiation grafting techniques. Grafting of styrene into poly-(tetrafluoroethylene) films followed by sulfonation led to strong anionic membranes showing good performance in reverse osmosis. Carboxylic membranes were prepared by grafting acrylic and methacrylic acids. Cationic membranes were obtained via grafting 4-vinylpyridine. These membranes were tested in various fractionation processes including reverse osmosis. N-vinylpyrrolidone grafts exhibited high selectivity for separating water from organic solvents by pervaporation. Bifunctional membranes containing both carboxylic and pyridine groups were obtained by two successive grafting steps either in bulk giving rise to “homogeneous” membranes with unusual swelling properties, or into localized areas generating mosaic membranes which exhibit negative osmosis and increased rates of ion-pair diffusion.

    Notes: The crystallization of flexible-chain molecules of different degrees of coiling is considered. The nature of the phase transition during crystallization is discussed. The revision of established notions on phase transitions in polymers leads to the concept of crystalline topomorphism, i.e., the existence of two crystalline types with different modes of packing of macromolecules in the macroscopic crystal though they belong to the same lattice class: folded-chain crystal (FCC) and extended-chain crystal (ECC). Phase diagrams in coordinates of degree of coiling vs temperature are plotted. The values of molecular orientation and temperatures at which each of both mechanisms of crystallization takes place are evaluated. The mechanisms of ECC growth under equilibrium conditions and under conditions of molecular orientation are discussed. It is shown that the melting of ECC obtained by the process of orientational crystallization is a second order phase transition, being analogous to a crystal-nematic phase transition. At the same time the melting of FCC provides all the features of a first order transition.

    Notes: The concepts of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) are applied to polypropylene, a homopolymer and two copolymers, with a view to characterizing their brittle behavior at slow rates (0.5 cm/min) in terms of a fracture toughness, KIc. The effect of thickness, notch sharpness, and the mode of loading on KIc have been investigated in order to determine the plane strain toughness values, KcI for the materials. The two types of material are compared in terms of their toughness values over a range of temperatures between +30 and -160°C. Evidently, the small amounts of ethylene added to the copolymers show plasticizing effects, suppressing the yield stress and the ductile-brittle transition temperature. In addition, the copolymers exhibit a ductile-brittle region between -100 and -45°C where notch strengthening is apparent in the tension mode and a slow crack growth region between -45 and -30°C where slow growth precedes unstable fracture. The homopolymer, however, shows no clear evidence of such intermediate regions, except for slight amounts of slow growth above 0°C, and becomes ductile around 30°C.

    Notes: The residual stresses in injection molded bars of polypropylene have been examined using a stress relaxation method and by the layer removal technique. A positive value for the internal stress parameter was obtained with newly molded specimens and was found to be retained by specimens stored at liquid nitrogen temperature. The stress relaxation parameter reduced to zero both for specimens aged at room temperature and also for those aged at -40°C. Nevertheless the relaxation behavior of specimens aged at all three temperatures was quite distinct. The layer removal technique showed that the stresses near to the surface were compressive and those in the interior tensile, in apparent contradiction to the interpretation of Kubat and Rigdahl for the meaning of a positive internal stress parameter. A marked reduction in stress levels on aging at room temperature was confirmed, however. The relevance of the relaxation spectrum of polypropylene to these observations is discussed.

    Notes: In the last few years some new features of the so-called type II diffusion have been established which confirm the first theoretical description of such a material transport into a semi-infinite glassy medium which at a certain concentration of the sorbate is transformed into a gel. The boundary between the glass and the gel progresses at a constant velocity into the interior of the sample thus yielding a linear term in the weight gain. The gradual establishment of the concentration profile in front of this boundary yields at the beginning a square root term in the weight gain. A detailed analysis of the extensive measurements of Hopfenberg, et al. of the diffusion of n-hexane into extremely small polystyrene spheres demonstrates that the weight gain always starts with a square root of time term. In sufficiently large spheres this contribution is soon completely overridden by the term linear in time. The spherical geometry substantially modifies the concentration profile and the weight gain. In particular the weight gain divided by the square root of time vs the square root of time shows a maximum as soon as the geometrical factors prevail over the effect of the constant velocity progression of the boundary between the glass and the gel.

    Notes: This paper is concerned with detecting crosslinking and changes in crosslink densities in cured polyimides. The methods used include diffusional weight gain and dynamic mechanical measurements on thin films of the cured polymers. In this study changes in diffusivities (D) for dimethylformamide (DMF) sorption into polyimide films as well as dynamic mechanical moduli and loss tangents are shown to be related to differences in polyimide cure schedule and composition. In all cases studied there is a β loss dispersion in the range 120 to 150°C and a γ loss dispersion in the range -50 to -80°C. The position and intensity of the β and γ relaxation processes vary primarily with cure cycle. There is a significant correlation between the magnitude of the diffusion coefficient and β and γ transition temperatures (Tβ and Tγ). Tβ increases and Tγ decreases with higher values of D so that T*, the difference Tβ - Tγ, is directly proportional to the diffusivity. By relating these results to data in the literature and the known curing behavior of polyimides, this trend is shown to be consistent with the presence of crosslinking and to be related to the crosslink density of the polymers. The data of this study indicate that measurements of diffusion coefficients for solvent sorption can be used to study changes in crosslink densities in glassy thermosetting polymers. Since the method is best suited for studying one dimensional diffusion, it also is suggested as a possibility for determining relative crosslink densities in adhesives bonded between substrates.

    Notes: Experimental steady-state permeability studies have been made with non-ionic, anionic and cationic dyes using carboxy cellulose membranes as anionic substrates. The experimental results show that with increasing bulk ionic strength the diffusion velocities of anionic and cationic compounds increase and decrease, respectively. The diffusion behavior of non-ionic compounds is independent of the ionic strength. Empirical relationships have been deduced which fit the permeation data of the anionic compounds. A new concept is introduced which postulates that the diffusion behavior of colons within an anionic membrane is dependent on the basicity of the fixed ionic groups. In substrates with matrix-bound anionic groups of high basicity, such as carboxy cellulose, the permeability behavior is described in terms of a new diffusion mechanism referred to as the “fluctuating” charge mechanism. This concept can provide a semi-quantitative understanding of the different electrostatic obstruction effects which matrix-bound carboxylate and sulfonate groups have on the permeability of colons. The measured permeability of the counter ions is in qualitative agreement with the proposed diffusion model.

    Notes: Elastin shares the properties of rubberlike elasticity and its capability to form a glass with crosslinked polymers in general. The glass transition temperature of dry elastin at 200°C is strongly depressed by water, as well as by ethylene glycol. On a volume fraction basis, both diluents depress the glass point equally. This result is strong evidence against any specific binding of diluent molecules and indicates relatively high mobility of diluent molecules in glassy elastin. This deduction is in agreement with the conclusions reached on the basis of heat capacity and dielectric measurements. Proposed small sections of β turns in the elastin chain are compatible with the concept of naturally occurring elastin chains in the amorphous state. Our results, however, do not confirm the existence of proposed β spirals with periodicities of 100 Å which were suggested to be the basis for the banded filaments observed in electron micrographs.

    Notes: Sorption data for H2O in glassy poly(acrylonitrile)(PAN) are presented for a range of relative vapor pressures at temperatures from 20 to 50°C. Simple dual mode sorption, involving “hole-filling” and molecular solution appears to dominate the low activity region of sorption. Based on the clustering analysis suggested by Zimm and Lundberg, pronounced clustering of penetrant appears to occur above a relative pressure of 0.6. The form of the effective concentration-dependent diffusion coefficient for H2O in PAN, determined by analysis of steady state permeation data, suggests that water in the microvoids and clusters has a lower mobility than the molecularly dissolved water in the polymer matrix. Time lag measurements at high upstream relative water vapor pressures suggest that the transient state permeation has a non-Fickian character due to relaxations which occur slowly to accommodate the clustering process.

    Notes: Water uptake has been measured in an epoxy resin based on tetraglycidylmethylenedianiline curved with dicyanidamide. The curing behavior of this system as elucidated by differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform infrared is complex. Based upon this information we selected curing temperatures and times in addition to the “standard” cure. The kinetics of the sorption of water by the materials which have undergone the standard cure indicate that the two modes of sorption are involved at high humidity and only a single mode at lower humidity (as seen by changes in the slope of the log Mt vs log t plots). The kinetics of the sorption in the resins which have undergone post cure at higher temperatures also indicate two or more modes of sorption at high humidities. However the slopes of the log Mt vs log t plots differ from those for the resin with standard cure. Subsequent sorption/desorption cycles on the standard cure resin showed marked increases in the initial sorption rate as well as changes in mode, suggesting that irreversible changes in the resin had occurred.

    Notes: Slow developed flow in an extruder channel has been set up as a two-dimensional, variational problem using a helical coordinate system, thus avoiding the usual geometrical simplification. Continuity is enforced by an integral form of constraint, and solutions for isothermal, Newtonian flow are obtained by a finite element method for both shallow and deep, highly curved channels. The performance of the solution procedure as a function of Lagrangian multiplier is discussed. Convergence to correct solutions is demonstrated for the shallow channel case. Deep channel results are compared with analytic predictions, curvature corrected according to Booy. Further testing of deep channel results will be made against experimental data.

    Notes: Polymeric films, chiefly polyethylenes, were subjected to corona-discharge treatment in a continuous treater at commercial rates in a program covering wide ranges of the main processing factors (2). Electron-spin-resonance measurements on freshly treated films found no free radicals. Reactions of the treated surfaces with a free-radical compound, diphenyl picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) were studied, focusing mainly on the rate effects. The evidence indicates that corona treatment produces fairly stable peroxide structures of the forms RO2R and RO3R on polyethylene surfaces. RO3R reacts rapidly with DPPH alone, while RO2R undergoes a slower reaction after addition of the catalyst, triethylene diamine. DPPH is capable of detecting as few as 1013 peroxide groups per square centimeter. Activation energies were 12 kcal/mole for the uncatalyzed reaction and 16 kcal/mole for the amine-catalyzed reaction. As with the physical effects reported earlier (2), the production of peroxides is most strongly dependent on the energy delivered to the film during treatment. This energy is proportional to the quotient of corona current and web speed, I/S, Regression analysis showed that air-gap thickness, relative humidity, and number of electrodes used also were significant factors, while dielectric thickness and corona frequency were not. We found that-γSP, the polar component of surface energy of the treated film, which is nearly zero for untreated polyethylenes, is exponentially related to the concentrations of both RO2R and RO3R with a correlation coefficient for 92 specimens tested of 0.88. We believe this is the first strong evidence linking treatment factors, at commercial levels of treatment, to chemistry of the treated surface and linking both of those to changes in physical behavior of the surface.

    Notes: The load carrying capacity of adhesive joints is analyzed by applying the principle of fracture mechanics in which failure is assumed to initiate from sites of initial imperfections such as bubbles, cracks or unbonded portions of the interface. The cohesive and adhesive modes of failure are investigated for a butt joint under angle loading. Based on the prediction of the strain energy density criterion, the lowest failure stress for the adhesive joint occurred when the load is applied at an angle with respect to the crack plane. This is in contrast to the homogeneous material solution where the lowest failure stress corresponds to normal loading. Numerical examples are provided for a joint made of DER 332-TEPA epoxy with aluminum as the adherends. Discussed in detail are the dependencies of the strength of the joint with reference to the material properties of the constituents, geometries of the components, and direction of loading.

    Notes: Theoretical or rheological calculations for crosshead die geometry were thought not worthwhile until recently, and restrictor, or choker, bars were often excessively relied upon for film uniformity. Thus, the residence time distribution of a polymer melt was infrequently calculated especially in the T-die, because it was assumed to be very wide in T-dies. This report provides a general equation expressing the residence time distribution of polymer melts in T-dies, and indicates how to take an optimum combination of the flow-path dimensions in order to obtain both a high flow uniformity and a comparatively narrow residence time distribution across the die width. Such a T-die designed by the above considerations will produce a shorter heat history and improved physical properties of the sheet or film produced.

    Notes: Co-extrusion by means of only one single screw with a double channel was studied. The effects of the operating conditions, the material properties and the screw geometries on the inter-channel flow and the output rate were determined. The flow mechanism and the application to the composites with stratified structures were discussed. The inter-channel flow rate decreased with decrease in the back pressure, the stock temperature, the screw rotational speed and the viscosity difference between polymer melts in both channels. The decrease in the compression ratios of channels, the barrier flight in the compression zone and the sealing at the flight clearance with the polyamide-packing reduced the inter-channel flow significantly without a decrease in the output rate. With this method, co-extrudates with distinctly stratified cross-sections were prepared. The single screw with double-channel could be applied effectively to the co-extrusion of composites with stratified structures such as sheath-and-core structures, and it is particularly suitable to distribute the additives heterogeneously or to enclose the waste polymer.

    Notes: Details are given below of how the heat-up process for radiation methods may be expressed mathematically. In order to fulfill practical requirements, a process must ensure calculation of necessary heating time using process-specific characteristic curves with a minimum of mathematical effort. To this end the amount of heat actually absorbed by the surface of the O product must be known when sheets are heated by radiation. This can easily be determined through measurement of sheet surface temperature. It will be shown that if certain preconditions are satisfied, then variations in the distance of the IR-heaters have no effect on the temperature profile of the sheet. With poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) the nature of coloration does not play a significant role. Investigations into the cooling process centered on a number of cooling methods and tool materials. The dynamic behavior of tempered and untempered thermoforming tools showed similarities to work already carried out in the injection molding sector. Consideration was given to possible ways of using the “Thermolog” analog computer, developed at IKV, to calculate the necessary cooling times in the production of thermoformed parts. Input values and basic data on temperature-time curves, necessary for the compilation of cooling curves using the analog simulator, were derived from appropriate tests on a thermoforming machine.

    Notes: DSC analysis of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) samples either weathered outdoors for up to 10 years or aged at 71°C has shown that these plastics deteriorate most readily through the polybutadiene (BD) component. Oxidation of the BD in ABS leads to an increasing and broadening Tgas well as a decrease in ΔCp at Tg. The latter quantity can be used to quantitatively assay the amount of unoxidized rubber in a photo- or thermal-oxidized sample. The loss of impact strength of these resins with chemical aging can be correlated with the oxidation of the polybutadiene phase. Studies of rubber content as a function of sample thickness have revealed that an embrittled layer containing oxidized BD develops at the surface of an aged, 100 mil. ABS plaque (natural) and grows to a thickness of about 10 mils after 3 years exposure to sunlight. ABS containing carbon black is effectively screened from this photo induced degradation and consequently has much better retention of its initial impact strength values. In addition, carbon black was observed to retard thermal oxidation in some ABS samples.     Notes: Blends of polyoxymethylene (POM) with a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate (CEVAc) have been studied. The effect of viscosity ratio for melts of the components on the processes of fiber formation in extrudates and on the rheological properties of the molten blend has been tested. The viscosity ratio of the fiber-forming POM and the matrix varied in the range 0.35-27.7. POM ultrathin fibers of unlimited length can be formed in the CEVAc only at a viscosity ratio close to unity. For ratios much greater than unity, the extrudate is found to contain short fibers and a finely dispersed powder or no fibers at all. If the viscosity of the POM melt is lower than that of the matrix, films are formed in addition to fibers. The second factor that governs fiber formation is the extrusion shear stress. An optimum shear stress exists at which the amount of ultrathin fibers is a maximum.

    Notes: Parameters are developed for predicting rheological changes during ionic, condensation, and free-radical polymerization. Polymerization is viewed as changes in molecular weight and concentration for polymer solutions. Polymerization data in the laboratory and in tubular reactors are shown to be consistent with the proposed rheokinetic theory. This approach is based on polymerization kinetics and the corresponding solution rheology and phase diagrams.

    Notes: Iodinated polystyrene (IPS) is obtained by direct iodination of polystyrene and its lithographic characteristics are investigated. The sensitivity of the polymer to electron beams is increased as the result of iodination by a factor of about 10 and reaches 1 μC/cm2. Coated IPS films are very stable and no changes in exposure characteristics are observed even after pre-baking at 220°C for 10 min. It is found that crosslinking does not proceed in a vacuum after electron beam exposure. The milling rate of IPS under Ar+ bombardment is measured to be 0.25 nm/s. This is lower than that of poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethyl acrylate) (0.67 nm/s) and that of permalloy (0.42 nm/s), both obtained under the same conditions. The mechanism of sensitization by iodination is discussed.
