    Notes: Numerical experiments with a nonlinear (λχ4) oscillator which has its harmonic frequency changing randomly with time reveal certain interesting features of its dynamics of quantum evolution. When λ = 0, the level populations are seen to oscillate. But, as the nonlinear coupling is switched on (λ 〉 0), a threshold is reached at λ = λc when the evolution is seen to be characterized by an abrupt transition dominantly to the highest available state of the unperturbed (initial) oscillator. It is shown that this transition probability is maximized at a particular value of λ. The time threshold for this transition decreases with increasing nonlinear coupling strength. The numerically obtained structures of the underlying quantum-phase spaces of the linear and nonlinear random oscillators are examined. Possible use of these results in a problem of chemical origin is explored. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Testosterone (17β-hydroxy-4-androsten-3-one) was studied by the semiempirical AM1 and PM3 and ab initio STO-3G*, 3-21G*, and 6-31G* methods. The goals were to compare those methods and to know the electronic structure of the hormone. Full geometry optimization was performed, and two crystal conformers (T1 and T2), and experimental dipole moment in solution were used for comparison. One conformer with a dipole moment similar to the solvated conditions was generated. Total energy, entalphies, dipole moments, charges, electrostatic potentials, and highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) were calculated. Root-mean-square (RMS) index of the theoretical molecules against T1 and T2 showed best results with the 3-21G* and 6-31G* methods, while AM1 gave better energies than PM3. Dipole moments were directed toward the OH group and the botton face of the A ring. The frontier orbitals were located along the C4-C5 π bond, particularly the LUMO was split between C4 and C5, predicting the action of enzymes at C5 yielding to 5α and 5β-reduced androgens. Electrostatic potentials might be also of biological importance since they are coincidental with the dipole-moment orientation. Finally, it is interesting that the solvatedlike conformer, its properties, and the OH group laid between the same group of T1 and T2 and with a total energy between the crystals and the gas phase or in vacuo conditions. This results might also explain the biology of testosterone and use them to model the hormone-receptor interaction. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Simple molecular orbital calculations are employed in searching electronic parameters which may characterize the chemical carcinogens. Using frontier orbitals, the carcinogen-DNA bond formation is described as an electron transfer from the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of DNA to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of the carcinogen. Analysis of the DNA bases units shows that the electron donation occurs preferentially at the guanine site. The calculated low LUMO energy of several carcinogens indicate correctly the electrophilic character of these compounds. The difference between the carcinogen and the ultimate carcinogen is analyzed. Epoxides, free radicals, alkylating agents, and other metabolite forms are studied. A reasonable correlation is found between the LUMO energy and the carcinogenic function. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Molecular dynamics simulations of liquid formamide(HCONH2) were carried out using the GROMOS software. The formamide molecule is represented by all of its atoms with all internal degrees of freedom. In contrast to other simulations dealing with bulk properties, this study focuses on the interface liquid-vacuum for the first time.     Notes: An extension to the theory of Schrödinger equations has been made which enables the derivation of eigenvalues from a consideration of a very small part of geometric space. The concomitant unwanted continuum effects have been removed. The theory enables very convergent or “superconvergent” calculations. In the case of the helium ground state, E=-2.90372437703411987 Eh was obtained from 251 terms. The result is comparable to that from the largest variation calculations so far carried out reinforced by extrapolation techniques. The theory is extensible to atoms and molecules irrespectively of the number of electrons or nuclear centers.     Notes: Roothaan-Hartree-Fock (RHF) calculations are carried out for the ground states of the atoms from helium to xenon using a minimal basis set of Slater-type functions whose principal quantum numbers are allowed to take variationally optimal noninteger values. The resulting energies are substantially superior to those obtained previously under the usual restriction that principal quantum numbers be positive integers. The energy lowering relative to the single-zeta wave functions of Clementi and co-workers ranges from 0.0066 Eh in He to 11.2 Eh in Xe. Our results are superior to those obtained by Höjer using a minimal basis set of unconventional binomially screened basis functions. Noninteger principal quantum numbers benefit d-orbitals the most; physically realistic negative d-orbital energies are obtained in all cases including those transition-metal atoms for which a conventional single-zeta STF basis leads to positive d-orbital energies. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: An ab initio study on the reaction of the ground state (3D) and the excited state (1D) of Sc+ with methane was performed. Reaction channels on the singlet and triplet potential surface (PES) and the reaction mechanism are examined and discussed. Three regions of the potential surface was studied: the molecular complex, the C(SINGLE BOND)H insertion products, and the transition states for the reaction. Comparisons between singlet and triplet PESs show that the excited state (1D) of Sc+ has more reactivity with methane than does the ground state (3D) due to the spin quantum number conservation with the more stable insertion intermediate. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The importance of the hybridization displacement charge (HDC) in describing molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) maps was demonstrated by studying six molecules; pyrazine N-oxide, para-nitropyridine, 5-nitropyrimidine, 3-nitropyridazine, N2, and N2O. It is shown that continuously distributed HDC-corrected Löwdin charges reproduce the MEP features of these molecules, most of which have competing electrophilic sites, in agreement with ab initio results. Further, it is found that for homonuclear diatomic molecules MEP minima can be located properly using HDC-corrected Löwdin (or HDC-corrected Mulliken) continuously distributed charges, but these features cannot be obtained using the conventional Löwdin (or Mulliken) charges. It was shown that the order of molecular electric field (MEF) values near the different electrophilic sites becomes changed when one moves away from the molecules. Thus, pyridine-type nitrogen atoms are the preferred binding sites close to the molecules, while at large distances, effects of oxygen atoms of the NO groups become dominant. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Some types of atomic vibrations in a chain of the DNA type constructed of G-C pairs were studied. These are the atomic vibrations of the lateral groups of guanine and N(3)H(1)H(2) of cytosine connected by the hydrogen bond h-b-1 and the vibrations of the centers of masses of bases in the direction parallel to bonds h-b-i, i = 1-3. The vibrations mix partially due to the dependence of the energy of the bond h-b-1 on its length and split into two bands because of the interaction between neighboring base pairs. It was shown that the excitation of the bond h-b-1 results in the splitting off of the two local vibrations and in a small deformation of the chain in the vicinity of the pair with the localized hydrogen bond. The law of the dispersion of band vibrations, values of the split-off frequencies, and degree of poly(dG)-poly(dC) chain deformation were determined. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: We compare geometry configurations, vibrational properties, and electronic structures of (HF)2 in a free state and inside argon atom shells Arn. For the first stage, molecular dynamics calculations for the (HF)2 · Ar62 heterocluster are performed with the help of model potentials HF(SINGLE BOND)HF, Ar(SINGLE BOND)Ar, and Ar(SINGLE BOND)HF. Then, ab initio quantum chemistry analysis is carried out for the smaller systems (HF)2 · Ar15 and (HF)2 · Ar6 when keeping the argon atoms closest to the trapped dimer. We conclude that the hydrogen-bonded complex (HF)2 gains some extra stability inside the argon shells, originating primarily from a decrease of intermolecular distance RFF. Electronic structure calculations are in accord with the changes in dynamical properties, namely, a noticeable increase in the vibrational frequency assigned to the F(SINGLE BOND)F stretching mode (+25 cm-1) and decrease in rms deviations for the corresponding coordinate δFF. In addition to these changes, the argon atoms of the nearest solvent shell donate a small fraction of electron charge which is spent for an increase of population of the antibonding orbital σ*Hf(SINGLE BOND)Ff of the free monomer unit and shift orbital energies primarily of the lone-pair fluorine species. These shifts are greater than the changes due to geometry alterations and the possible inaccuracies of the calculation scheme. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: An efficient expansion method for the evaluation of VB matrix elements is introduced. The overlaps of VB wave functions of N electrons can be treated as algebrants, i.e., generalized determinants, of N × N matrices. An algebrant can be expanded with subalgebrants of lower orders in a successive way. By choosing Rumer spin bases and appropriately arranging the expansion, it is found that the number of unique subalgebrants involved in the expansion increases in a quite moderate way with N. In contrast to the traditional symmetric group approach, which explicitly utilizes all N! representation matrices, the new strategy incorporates the group theoretical factors in a simple way in the successive expansion. As only the unique subalgebrants are further expanded, the computational effort required by the new strategy scales in a very acceptable manner with the increasing number of electrons. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: The geometries and S-H, S-S, and S-C bond dissociation energies for hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen disulfide, methanethiol, dimethyl disulfide, and dimethyl disulfide were calculated with both ab initio (ROHF and MP2), hybrid (BHandH, BHandHLYP, Becke3LYP and Becke3P86), and nonlocal (BLYP and BP86) density functional theory (DFT) methods.     Notes: The mechanism and kinetics for the decomposition of β-hydroxypropaldehyde, primary and secondary β-hydroxyketones, were studied by using ab initio RHF/6-31G and RHF/6-31G* methods. The activation barriers of these reactions were refined to be 39.57, 40.10, and 36.80 kcal mol-1 at the MP2/ /RHF/6-31G* level, respectively. The calculated results show that each decomposition is a concerted process with hydrogen transferring and bond breaking via a six-membered cyclic transition state. The thermal rate constants of the decomposition of primary and secondary β-hydroxyketones were obtained by calculating microcanonical probability fluxes through each transition state. It is theoretically confirmed that methyl substitution at the hydroxyl carbon of β-hydroxyketones causes a small enhancement in rates. The theoretical investigations of the mechanism and the rate constants are in agreement with the experimental results. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: An analysis of the anisotropic Heisenberg model is carried out by solving the Bethe ansatz solution of the model numerically as a function of the anisotropy parameter for finite N. A brief introduction to the limit of the infinite chain is presented. The energy for a few special limiting cases of the anisotropy parameter in the Hamiltonian are worked out.     Notes: Restricted geometry optimizations at the ab initio SCF level with the 3-21G basis set were employed to investigate the conformation space of flavone acetic acid (FAA) and its related compounds. All the conformations are produced from a conformation which is, according to our previous work, probably the active conformation in terms of antitumor activity shown by these compounds. Detailed studies on FAA were carried out while only brief discussions are made on the analogs. The main results obtained are that (1) FAA is a very flexible molecule, e.g., with the energy barrier up to about 3 kcal mol-1 from the reference conformation, the important torsional angle τ1 can change from 27.0° to 117.0°, τ2 from -168.0° to 2.0°, and τ3 from -50.0° to 30.0°; (2) the hydrogen-bonding effect plays an important role in determining lower-energy conformations; (3) among all the FAA conformations considered, some are active and some are inactive; (4) it seems that the analogs will have similar behavior to FAA when the torsional angle τ3 is restricted to the values which are around the equilibrium values; and (5) the hypothesis put forward previously has been further developed in this work. Now, we postulate that efficient charge transfers will lower the energy and that proper charge transfers will activate the molecule. There are mainly two different types of charge transfer corresponding to two different types of conformation, which are specified in this article. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: A few simple atom-transfer reactions (i.e., Ȧ+X-A→A-X+Ȧ) are studied by quantum mechanical ab initio methods. Emphasis is given to the detailed analysis of density matrices rather than to the energetics. Results reveal that during these reactions a small free valence always develops on the migrating atom at the transition state. The barriers in these reactions arise from the greater extent of bond cleavage in the reactant than that of bond formation in the transition state. Analysis of bond orders estimated from bond lengths using Pauling's relation also leads to the fact that the bond-cleavage process is more advanced than is the bond-formation process in these reactions.   © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: The H2 interaction with the Pd dimer and trimer were studied using multiconfigurational self-consistent field (MC-SCF) calculations with the relativistic effective core potential (RECP); the correlation energy correction was included in the extended multireference configuration interaction (MRCI), variational and perturbative to second order. Here, we considered the Pd2 first six states: 3Σ+u, 1Σ+g, 3Πg, 3Δxy, 1Σ+u, and 3Σ+g. For them, the four geometrical approaches included were the side-on H2 toward Pd2, for the hydrogen molecule in and out the Pd dimer plane; the perpendicular end-on H2 toward Pd2; and the perpendicular end-on Pd2 to H2. The Pd2 ground state is 3Σ+u, which only captures H2 in the C2v end-on approach, softly relaxing the H(SINGLE BOND)H bond. The closed-shell 1Σ+g captures the H2 molecule in all the approaches considered: The side-on approach of this state presents deep wells and relaxes the H(SINGLE BOND)H bond, and the end-on approach captures H2 with a relatively longer H(SINGLE BOND)H distance and also a deep well. The 3Πg state was the only one which did not capture H2. For the triangular Pd3 clusters, H2 was approached in the C2v symmetry in and out of the Pd3 plane. In the triangular case, H2 was absorbed in both spin states, with deep wells and relaxing the H(SINGLE BOND)H distance. The linear Pd3 singlet and triplet states capture outside of the Pd3 and break the H(SINGLE BOND)H bond. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: We presented a calculation of the total and partial decay widths of vibrational predissociation (VP) of the HeI2 molecule for low initial vibrational excitations from the lowest van der Waals (vdW) state with total angular momentum J = 0. A time-dependent golden rule wave-packet method was employed in our numerical calculations for the decay widths. The computed total decay widths, lifetimes, and rates of VP are in fairly good agreement with those extrapolated from the experimental data available. Predicted total decay widths as a function of initial vibrational levels exhibit a highly nonlinear behavior. These results demonstrate that a quantum mechanical decay mode for low vibrational excitation remains as well. The total propagation time needed in the time-dependent golden rule wave-packet calculations is much shorter than is the lifetime of the predissociation of HeI2. It is shown that the final-state interaction between the fragments is important for determining the final rotational-state distribution (partial decay width). We find that the major peak position in the final rotational-state distribution shifts to lower rotational energy levels with increase of the initial vibrational quantum number, which is evidently different from that for higher vibrational levels. This fact can be clearly explained by the dependence of the amount of kinetic energy released to the product degrees of freedom on the initial vibrational state. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Starting with a complex wave number k (purely imaginary for bound and antibound states), we integrate numerically from the origin up to a matching point using Numerov's method. The inward integration is performed using the corresponding (first-order) Riccati equation. The complex eigenvalues are found by matching the two logarithmic derivatives. We find narrow shape resonances within the well, above the dissociation limit, and broad resonances above the centrifugal barrier.     Notes: The Gaussian expansions of the generalized relativistic effective core potential (GRECP) components are reported for elements Hg through Rn. The accuracy of the analytical GRECPs is estimated by calculations of atomic transition energies with the numerical one-configurational wave functions in comparison with Dirac-Fock calculations. The results of the corresponding calculations with the RECPs of other groups are also given. An “averaged error” in the reproduction of the transition energies without the change of the occupation number of the 5d-shell is an order of magnitude smaller than that for the RECPs of other groups. As is demonstrated for the transitions with the change of the occupation number of the 5d-shell in mercury, the largest absolute error of the GRECP is only 1.5-2 times smaller than that of the energy-adjusted pseudopotential (PP) or the RECP of Ross et al. with the same space of explicitly treated electrons. However, the dispersion of these errors is 19⋅10-4 au for the energy-adjusted PP, 35⋅10-4 au for the RECP of Ross et al. and only 4⋅10-4 au for the GRECP. One-configurational spin-averaged calculations of the molecular properties for HgH and HgH+ are carried out and compared with the corresponding results of Häussermann et al.   © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: The density operator of an n level quantum system is known to be a positive semidefinite, hermitian operator of trace one. In a previous article we have established, through su(n) algebras, a formalism where density operators are built from coherence vectors in a n2 - 1 dimension, real, Euclidean space. The last two conditions are then automatically satisfied. Being positive semidefinite means a restriction to the domain of coherence vectors. In this article we clarify this domain and obtain several equivalent tests to know if a given vector is part of it.

    Notes: The importance of many-body interactions beyond the mean-field approximation of the Hartree-Fock (HF) self-consistent-field crystal orbital formalism is analyzed in one-dimensional (lD) transition-metal (3d) polymers with extended organic π ligands. The correlation energies are expressed in a quasiparticle picture. They are divided into long-range contributions that are coordinated with the basis of spatially uncorrelated Bloch orbitals and into short-range correlations derived for local rearrangement processes that are described in terms of a one-electron basis which breaks the translational symmetry of the lD system. Both contributions (long-range and short-range correlations) are fragmented into elements of physical significance (hole and electron self-energies for the former interactions; relaxation, pair-relaxation and pairremoval terms for the local virtual excitations). The magnitude of these elements is analyzed as a function of the characters of the one-electron states in the HF bands, the occupation patterns at the 3d centers, the available particle and hole channels in the elementary fluctuations and the energies and shapes of the various bands. The broad spectrum of possible amplifications and compensations leading to the quasiparticle shifts in metallomacrocycles is discussed. The different mechanisms to change the dispersions and to modify the width of the ∊(k) curves are studied. It is shown that electron correlation and relaxation in transition-metal polymers can lead even to a broadening of the energy bands. This behavior is in contrast to the influence of many-body effects in simpler homogeneous materials where electron correlation is in any case accompanied by a narrowing of the dispersions (i.e., detraction of the group velocities of particles and holes). Possible modifications in the shapes of the one-particle curves and the quasiparticle bands are also considered in the text [transition from a “normal ∊(k) dispersion” to an energy band with a negative slope as a result of electron correlation]. Simplified formulas are derived that allow for a rough assessment of the various correction terms even in structurally complicated transition-metal stacks with extended organic ligands. The approximate relations are used to correct the HF band structures of complex onedimensional metallomacrocycles as well as simpler crystalline materials by means of the quasiparticle approximation.

    Notes: The usefulness of the notion that a one-particle reduced local energy map can measure local errors in a trial wave function is investigated. Examination of the literature suggests that this notion rests on the assumption that a map of the relative error in the one-particle density behaves like the one-particle reduced local energy map. This is tested for several spinless one-dimensional one-particle systems. The assumption is discovered to be ill founded when applied to a certain contrived situation, and not to be quantitative when applied to familiar situations. The possibility remains, however, that the assumption may sometimes be useful for obtaining the correct ordering of trial wave functions with respect to the accuracy of certain types of expectation values.

    Notes: The complete (nonreduced) αα probability density functions evaluated from the Hartree-Fock and simple Hartree product wavefunctions have been used to elucidate the angular features of spin correlation and the Fermi hole in the 23S state of helium and the ground state of beryllium. This approach shows that the local Fermi holes in these two cases are very similar and that the Fermi hole is essentially spherically symmetric when the reference electron is close to the nucleus. As the reference electron is removed to larger radial distances, appreciable polarization of the Fermi hole is observed. The polarization is greater in the direction of the nucleus than away from the nucleus, contrary to the situation in the Coulomb hole of the helium ground state where the polarization is greater away from the nucleus than toward the nucleus. Several other differences between the He 23S Fermi hole and the He 11S Coulomb hole are noted.

    Notes: A comparison of Roothaan-Hartree-Fock methods (both restricted and unrestricted) with density functional ones (LCAO-Xα and cellular MS-Xαβ) is made using as test case the He22 + molecular ion. It is shown the analogy that exists between RHF and symmetry-adapted LCAO-Xα potential energy curves, as well as between UHF and symmetry-unconstrained LCAO-Xα ones. The influence of symmetry adaptation on the overall behavior of the potential energy curve is also discussed. Finally, the difference in the behavior of the LCAO-Xα and cellular MS-Xαβ calculations is explained as an artifact of the space partitioning in the latter technique. It is concluded that LCAO-Xα method is superior to cellular MS-Xαβ because it requires less effort to reach the same results and that the general behavior is similar to UHF, although the former affords a better equilibrium bond distance and a worse energy barrier than the latter.

    Notes: The energies of the ground states of the mononuclear atomic systems, until now determined merely by approximate methods, turn out to exhibit some almost exact interdependencies. A simple statistical functional of the electronic structure (the “γ representation”) turns out to be decisive for the system energy. In this paper that interdependence is further traced for the N-electron systems in isoelectronic series (with constant N and varying Z). The resulting “combinatorial formula” reproduces the experimental data with the errors at least ten times smaller than those of the conventional Hartree-Fock approximation. The reason why there is such an exact formula for the ground-state energy remains to be clarified. The limiting behavior of our energy formula for large Z exhibits consistency with the Thomas-Fermi and the Z-1perturbation expansion models.

    Notes: Second-order Rayleigh-Schrödinger Hartree-Fock perturbation theory is applied to evaluate the correlation energy for the 4f14 shell of Yb. The partial-wave (PW) increments to the pair energies, and the total correlation energy are calculated using first-order radial pair functions obtained as the solution of two-dimensional differential equations. These equations are solved using the Chalmers University version of the finite difference method. The total second-order correlation energy amounts to 0.89573 hartree. The results for the pair energies, which are close to the all-external pair energies, are compared with related CI values. It turns out that the correlation effects within the 4f shell of rare-earth systems are dominated by the all-external effects. The ff and gg PWS are dominant in the description of the correlation effects in the 4f shell and provide 80% of the total correlation energy. Next in importance are the dd, hh, and dg PWS which provide 12% of the total correlation energy.

    Notes: N-representability conditions for a two-particle density operator implied by positive-semidefiniteness of the projection operator PN+1(φ1 Λ ΨN) are derived and discussed. The operator PN+1(φ1 Λ ΨN) projects onto an (N + 1)-particle antisymmetric function φ1 Λ ΨN, the Grassmann product of a one-particle factor φ1 and an N-particle factor ΨN. The polar subcone P2N(g, q) to the set of N-representable two-particle density operators P2N which corresponds to these conditions is found. It is shown that its extreme rays belong to two orbits for the action of the unitary group of transformations in one-particle Hilbert space. The facial structure of the convex set P2N exposed by elements of P2N(g, q) is analyzed. An example of the operator that changes the structure of its bottom eigenspace when the number of fermions N surpasses a certain value is noted. A new approach to the diagonal conditions for N-representability is found. It consists of the decomposition of the N-particle antisymmetric identity operator onto the mutually orthogonal projection operators.

    Notes: The problem of ordering of chemical structures and subsequent comparison of their relative properties is initiated here by an approach which uses chemical points of view as well as graph theoretical considerations. Briefly, a collection of structurally related compounds (such as isomers, but even more broadly, compounds of similar chemical architecture even if involving different atoms) is examined pairwise and the degree of structural similarity is deduced from a comparison matching of their skeletons. Depending on the nature of the similarity found, some compounds qualify as related and are depicted as vertices of a graph with the corresponding connection. The derived “comparison graph” represents the framework for subsequent comparison of selected molecular properties. “Comparison graph” can also be viewed as depicting a hierarchy of dominance for the compounds and can be drawn with arcs (directed edges), or alternatively as a poset (partially ordered set). Usefulness of such viewing on a collection of structures is illustrated on hexane and heptane isomers and their properties. The results are discussed, particularly with respect to alternative ordering schemes. It was found that the present approach complements and does not duplicate other results, thus offering some novel structural insights.

    Notes: This is the third paper on the cellular method for polyatomic systems. We show how to deal with nonspherical Coulomb potentials. We also show how to modify the variational expression for the energy eigenvalues so as to obtain a faster convergence in the angular momentum series for the wavefunctions. We apply both techniques to the self-consistent calculation of SF6. Contrary to what we obtained in CH4 and SiH4, the cellular method cannot yield the correct equilibrium interatomic distance in the present case. The calculated ionization potentials are in the correct order but are all shifted by 2-3 eV. This shift is attributed to the wrong expression for exchange correlation.

    Notes: The contributions of different eigenstates of a nonlinearly coupled oscillator system to the expansion of a local wave packet are analyzed from an information theoretical point of view. Such a wave packet can be considered as a nonstationary vibrational state of an electronically excited manifold of a molecule after Franck-Condon type initial preparation. The distributions of these contributions are compared to their individual stochastic ideals using Ruch's concept of “mixing distances.” The stochastic ideals are constructed via a probability diffusion process between neighboring states of the original distributions, representing an initial preparation corresponding to a Hamiltonian with only irregular eigenstates. Gaussian minimum uncertainty wave packets as initial states in a two-dimensional nonlinear oscillator system with classically regular and chaotic energy ranges are studied numerically. It is found that distance measures, partly reflecting the “mixing distance” of a distribution from its stochastic ideal, show a large fluctuation in the classical regular energy range and a small fluctuation in the range where most of the classical trajectories move chaotically. This indicates that for this type of initial preparation process the actual location of the initial state in space plays the dominant role for the dynamics in the low-energy range while for wave packets starting near the dissociation energy of the model system this location becomes unimportant.

    Notes: Ab initio molecular orbital calculations using a 3-21G basis set have been used to optimize geometries for pyrrole, CH3(X)CCH2, CH3(H)CCHX (both cis and trans), c-C3H5X, and CH2CHCH2X, where X is CN and NC. In all the alkenyl derivatives methyl groups are found to adopt the conformation in which the methyl hydrogen eclipses the double bond. 6-31G*∥3-21G level calculations show the alkenyl cyanides to be of similar energy to pyrrole, but the isocyanides are ∼20 kcal mol-1 higher in energy. For both substituents the cyclopropyl derivatives are higher in energy by ∼10 kcal mol-1. At the 6-31G* level ring strain is 27.7 kcal mol-1 for the cyanide and 30.6 kcal mol-1 for the isocyanide. Data on the relative energies of RCN and RNC are compared when R is (i) a saturated hydrocarbon, (ii) an unsaturated hydrocarbon, (iii) an α-carbenium ion, (iv) an allyl cation, and (v) an α-carbanion.

    Notes: A new quantal approach to the problem of chemical reactions, of the type A + BC → AC + B, is proposed. The general formalism is based on a change of representation for the Hamiltonian system, such that in the new (ideal space) representation the transformed Hamiltonian may present, simultaneously, information on both the “reactants” and the “products” of the dynamical process. The change of representation is carried out by means of a unitary transformation that physically corresponds to creating bound BC and AC molecules, respectively, starting from free atoms. The transformation is explicitly realized by using models available in the literature, and the ideal space Hamiltonian is fully obtained, showing that it contains, in its structure, all the channels (inelastic, reactive, dissociative, etc.) available to the system. A discussion of the dynamics, at the light of the new Hamiltonian, seems to indicate that the theory will be particularly suited for numerical applications to the problem of chemical reactions and, more generally, that it may lead to a “unified” approach for both the subreactive and rearrangement regimes, in atom-diatom encounters.

    Notes: The ground and excited singlet and triplet states of 9,10-anthraquinone and its 1,4-dihydroxy and 1,4-diamino derivatives are investigated by ab initio configuration interaction calculations, using a floating Gaussian basis. For anthraquinone the calculated electronic absorption spectrum is consistent with previous experimental and theoretical results. The possible mechanisms of intersystem crossing and intensity borrowing in phosphorescence are discussed in terms of first- and second-order spin-orbit and vibronic perturbations of the computed singlet and triplet states. The calculated spectra of the 1,4-disubstituted derivatives are more complex than previously suggested from low-resolution polarized absorption studies. The principal effect of 1,4-substitution by electron donating groups is shown to be a powerful conjugative effect which significantly modifies selected molecular orbitals of anthraquinone; the resultant effect on the absorption spectra is the creation of two new substituent-induced π → π* transitions, one of which corresponds to the intense visible absorption band of these systems.

    Notes: A very simple method to get the same structural weights as those provided by a fully correlated valence bond function is proposed. It applies to the ground states of delocalized systems, and only requires the knowledge of the occupied molecular orbitals. The SCF wavefunction is projected on a valence bond basis, and the SCF weights thus obtained are multiplied by some sets of multipliers which are transferable from one molecule to another.     Notes: The role of “trapped electron,” photon, and vibronic state coupling has been worked out in relation to an aspect of cancer, namely, to the activity of an anticancer drug. The main emphasis for such study comes from the fact that in cancerous systems the participation of usual electronic states of the molecule may not be sufficient. Because of disorder in the cancer tumour, additional states, viz. trapped electron states, could be formed in the manner of localised states in solids. The drug activity of mitomycin C obtained in this way agrees with the experimental values. An additional feature of the study is that it shows that it will be effective mainly in the initial phases of cancer.

    Notes: The local behavior of several approximate kinetic energy functionals is analyzed, for the case of free atoms and ions, by comparison with the local kinetic energy of Hartree-Fock theory. The atomic electron densities used are, in all cases, Hartree-Fock electron densities. The kinetic energy functional obtained by the gradient expansion method (with a small number of terms) is, locally, not very accurate, but its integrated value is fortuitously accurate, due to a strong cancellation of errors. Functionals which have the Weizsäcker term tw = (Δ ρ)2/8ρ as a key ingredient are more accurate locally. The explicit incorporation of the shell structure and nonlocal density effects into the kinetic energy functional leads to the best results. The motivation for this work is that only a kinetic energy functional with an accurate local behavior will give good electron densities on solution of the Euler equation derived from it.

    Notes: Mulliken's atomic charges (MC) and potential derived (PD) point charges obtained from STO-3G wave functions are used to study the electrostatic interaction energies for a series of representative hydrogenbonded complexes. The results of the above-mentioned models are compared with the more accurate results of segmental multipole moment (SMM) expansion, and it is shown that the PD model is superior to the Mc model. The results of PD model are shown to be well correlated with the results of SMM expansion technique. Results of our calculations using 6-31G and 6-31G** PD charges are also reported here. Electrostatic interaction energies obtained using 6-31G** PD charges are compared with the 6-31G** SCF interaction energies available for the nine hydrogen-bonded dimers of ammonia, water, and hydrogen fluoride and a good con-elation between the two is shown. The interrelationship between the results of different basis sets are also examined for the PD point-charge model. The electrostatic interaction energies obtained using STO-3G PD model are shown to be well correlated to the results of 6-31G and 6-31G** PD models.

    Notes: The definition of a molecular property as a derivative of the electronic energy with respect to one or more applied perturbations is reviewed. The explicit enumeration of terms entering the derivative formulas is performed by considering in turn the various parameter spaces on which the energy and wave function depend. After deriving general expressions for first, second, and third derivatives for different types of perturbation, the parameter spaces involved in MCSCF and CI cases are identified and used to obtain expressions for the first and second derivatives. An example of an MCSCF third derivative is also given. In addition, the various equation systems defining the perturbed wave functions in each order are derived. Some attention is given to the efficient computer implementation of derivative calculations, and the present work is compared with that of other authors.

    Notes: Ab initio MODPOT/VRDDO/MERGE calculations have been carried out for all the different position isomers of nitrocubane from mononitrocubane through octanitrocubane for a perfect symmetrical cubic cubane skeleton and for mononitrocubane through septanitrocubane for the almost cubic experimentally determined cubane skeleton. These calculations were carried out with our own rapid efficient ab initio programs which also incorporate a number of desirable computational strategies for calculations on large molecules. The skeletal total overlap population of the cubane skeleton (a theoretical index we showed years ago to be sensitive and predictive of stability of energetic molecular frameworks) indicates that successive nitration seems to increase the stability of the cubane skeleton. Successive nitration also seems to increase the total overlap population of the C—NO2 bond. There are subtle differences depending on the exact positional isomer for a constant number of nitro groups - but the overall trend is definite. We have also generated electrostatic molecular potential contour (EMPC) maps around these nitrocubanes. These maps are indicative of preferred positions of electrophilic and nucleophilic attack as a function of the number of nitro groups or their positions. These EMPC maps can also indicate, to a first approximation, a limit on how close these molecules may be able to approach each other in a crystal.

    Notes: A detailed appraisal of Gaussian-type orbital (GTO) and Slater-type orbital (STO) expansions of 3d orbitals is carried out for the 2S state of copper - a case that should be maximally unfavorable for STOs. The appraisal is based on a wide variety of both position and momentum space properties and utilizes an information theoretic quality assessment technique. It is found that GTO expansions are not as useful as STO expansions for the prediction of 〈p8〉, 〈p7〉, and 〈r-6〉 because these properties probe the functional deficiencies of GTOs at small r and large p. On the other hand, GTO expansions can predict accurate values of large r properties like 〈r8〉 despite the fact that their position space asymptotic decay is too fast. Unlike the case of s orbitals in helium, there does not seem to be any consistent ordering between accuracy in position space and accuracy in momentum space. The quality measures are found to be very useful for pinpointing the deficiencies of various expansions. This information enables us to construct easily a new GTO and a new STO expansion that are more accurate than any of the others in the literature. It is suggested that one STO is worth no more than two GTOs in the case of d orbitals.

    Notes: A general method is presented to find in a least-squares sense a set of orthogonal eigenfunctions and their eigenvalues from local energy and numerical integration methods or by any other dissymmetric approach to solve the eigenvalue problem of a Hermitian operator. By this method a generalization of the minimum variance method to more than one eigenfunction is obtained, which is a variant of Scott's method. Also a new method is derived - called the minimum-overlap method - that is a least-squares numerical version of the standard Rayleigh-Ritz method. Test calculations on the atoms Be and Tm and the molecules H2 and CO have been performed with both numerical Hartree-Fock and Hartree-Fock-Slater methods. The least-squares solutions are an improvement over other methods in the case of accurate basis sets. Numerical Hartree-Fock calculations of moderate accuracy are found to be considerably faster than the analytic method.

    Notes: Some accurate results on the length dependence of the excitation energies from the ground state to ionic excited states in the Hubbard model of linear polyenes are obtained based on the method of Lieb and Wu. To this end, it is first shown that singly ionic excited states with “plus” alternancy symmetry in the Hubbard model are described by the wave functions in which the two electron operator [∑n=1N(-)nCnα+Cnβ+] is acted on (N - 2)-electron covalent eigenstates. Then by solving the Lieb-Wu equations the exact excitation energies of the lowest ionic state, which corresponds to the E1+ state in this model, are calculated for systems with up to 50 electrons. The result, together with a correction for the end effect, indicates that the excitation energies do not decrease as 1/N but converge to the limiting value more rapidly when the number of electrons N becomes large.

    Notes: We present molecular orbital (CNDO/2) calculations on the key fragments of different dihydrofolate reductase inhibitors. Distance geometry analysis, physicochemical parameter dependent QSAR, and molecular shape analysis raised some questions regarding the basicity of the ring nitrogen (N1) in these inhibitors and the effect of the various substituents on the basicity. We show that the ring nitrogen N1 of methotrexate has a considerably higher tendency to be protonated compared to that of folic acid. However, not all 2,4-diamino inhibitors are equally basic. Even 2-amino-4-hydroxyquinazoline is sufficiently basic to be protonated, but not the 2,4-diamino-5-sulfonyl derivatives. The pyrimidinium ion seems to be highly solvated, since in spite of its high protonation energy it is strongly basic. Triazines were found to be the most basic of all the classes studied.

    Notes: We studied the stability of guanine-cytosine and non-Watson-Crick pairs in the presence of H-bond interactions with various amino acid side chains, by using ab initio MO method. The external H-bond interactions stabilize or destabilize the base pairs, depending on the type of interacting residues and the site of the interaction. The pattern of the H-bond effect on the base-pair stability is quite different than in the case of adenine-uracil pair previously reported. From the present results, together with the previous results on adenine-uracil pair, we obtain a general rule for the effect of external H-bond interactions on the stability of base pairs. The site-specific effect of the H-bond interactions can be consistently explained by the cooperative interaction between external and base-pair H bonds. We discuss the application of the present results in the following biological processes: One is the protein-induced specific melting of double-stranded DNA, which is involved in transcription process. The present results suggest that H-bond interactions of protein residues at specific site of base pairs can weaken base-pair H bonding, which would assist the opening of double-stranded DNA. The other is the control of mutation in replication process. We suggest that proteins can discriminate non-Watson-Crick pairs against Watson-Crick pairs by H-bond interactions and can either induce or suppress mutation during DNA replication.

    Notes: The role of electron correlation effects on the bond-length alternation in linear metalliclike systems, as modeled by cyclic polyenes CNHN, N = 2n = 4v + 2, v = 1,2,…, is examined using the coupled cluster approach in the localized Wannier basis formalism. A recently developed approximate coupled pair approach which accounts for connected quadruply excited clusters is employed together with various truncation schemes for the localized doubly-excited cluster components. It is found that for the physical value of the coupling constant, the electron correlation has only a very slight effect on the potential energy curves, yielding almost the same values for both the magnitude of the bond-length alternation and for the stabilization energy relative to the symmetric equidistant structures as the restricted Hartree-Fock theory. This is in contrast to a strongly correlated region where the correlation effects stabilize the undistorted non-alternating structures. Different mechanisms of the bond-length alternation or Peierl's distortion as implied by a simple Hückel Hamiltonian and by the Pariser-Parr-Pople Hamiltonian models are also pointed out.

    Notes: The electronic structure of [TiCl4]n systems (n = 0, -1, -2, -3, and -4) has been investigated by the INDO method. Calculations show the stability of the tetrahedral structure over the square-planar one, for any value of n, in accord with experimental observation. The occupation of the 4p orbitals of the titanium atom was found to increase regularly as the dihedral angle decreases and reaches a maximum at the square-planar conformation. Energy partitioning analysis enabled much deeper understanding of bonding characteristics of the studied systems. It has been shown that the one-atom energy component may be a very sensitive measure of the stability of the central metal atom in its various oxidation states.

    Notes: General structures represented by graphs with unequal interactions (weighted edges) are considered and their characteristic polynomials (spectral polynomials) are obtained. It is shown that the procedure based on pruning terminal vertices previously developed by one of the present authors (K.B., Ref. 1) can be generalized to more common graphs in which nonuniform interactions (unequal couplings) occur. Special cases of the present approach are Möbius graphs, signed graphs, directed graphs, multigraphs, and pseudographs (i.e., graphs with multiple connections and graphs with loops, respectively). Weighted graphs (with general weights) are applicable to a variety of chemical problems such as problems of chemical kinetics, analysis of NMR spectra, the study of simple molecular orbitals, and molecular vibrations.

    Notes: In reply to Kaldor's [Int. J. Quantum Chem. XX, XXX (1985)] criticism of our study of simple four-electron models, in which the degree of quasi-degeneracy can be continuously varied, by the finite-order nondegenerate many-body perturbation theory, we examine in more detail a simple two-state model that the used to substantiate his claim that “the low order sum of the perturbation series is not very meaningful” in view of its divergence. It is shown that in contrast to Kaldor's claim, the partitioning used increases the radius of convergence of the considered perturbation series and is in principle capable to make it convergent. It is also shown that the convergence of the series is not very essential and that even divergent series can provide useful estimate of the exact result, particularly when the resummation techniques, such as Padè approximants or continued fractions, are employed. Finally, the shortcomings of the existing multi-reference perturbation approaches, which Kaldor advocates, are pointed out.

    Notes: A quality test for the SCF wave function based on separate examination of the one- and two-electron contributions to the total energy is proposed. The test is applied to 12 different STO basis sets for the ground state of the Ni atom and its predictions compared with those deduced for the minimization of the total energy. The new test allows for a reduction in the cancellation of errors detected in some applications of the standard SCF procedure. Some relations between the quality of the basis set and its size and structure are discussed.

    Notes: Aiming at developing an approximate method to get good quality valence bond functions for any closed-shell delocalized system, we analyze their SCF functions in terms of weighted bonding schemes, and investigate the general rules relating the weights of ionic structures to those of covalent ones. The butadiene case is treated in details, and the results are generalized to all closed shell singlet conjugated molecules. It is demonstrated that, contrary to what an intuitive generalization of the two-electron-two-center model would predict, each bond is not described as a half-covalent, half-ionic entity, but that the ionic component is significantly preponderant. Some consequences on the behavior of conjugated systems under the influence of an electric field are discussed.

    Notes: The introduction of local dielectric effects within the SCF theory of continuum solvent effects representation is examined at a semiempirical level. The formalism is developed in the frame of the reaction field theory within the effective charge approximation. The solvation free energies of Li+, Na+, F-, and Cl- ions in water were calculated in order to illustrate the reliability of the proposed model. The extension to molecules and molecular ions was performed including a desolvation corrective term related to the specific neighborhood of each atomic center. The results show a qualitative agreement with experimental data. A comment on the solvatonlike models for incorporating the solvent effect into the Hamiltonian is also given.

    Notes: We establish a theorem which gives a necessary and sufficient condition for a set of matrix irreps of a finite group to admit real coupling (Clebsch-Gordan) coefficients. The proof is based on the method used by Feit to prove that a full set of coupling coefficients for a finite group determines the group up to isomorphism. A consequence of the theorem is that a finite group with real coupling coefficients is necessarily quasiambivalent. The theorem is used to demonstrate that real coupling coefficients do not exist for the point-group hierarchies T ⊃ D2 and I ⊃ T or for the double-group hierarchies I* ⊃ D3*, I* ⊃ D5*, and O* ⊃ D3*.

    Notes: Fick's law of diffusion has been generalized to include kinetic processes, the transport term of the Boltzmann equation, and nonlocal interaction processes. It is shown that the collision interaction term can be obtained by the introduction of a quantum stochastic potential equation. Some approximations of a nonlocal Boltzmann equation can be solved exactly. The solutions can be applied to problems of molecular pattern in biology.
