    Notes: The overall nonideality of an aqueous mixed electrolyte solution is characterized in terms of a newly defined parameter Γ*, called the overall reduced ionic activity coefficient. It is shown that Γ* for the mixed solution is simply related to the properties of single-electrolyte solutions. Γ* is related to the vapor pressure of a mixed-electrolyte solution through well-known thermodynamic equations. This leads to a predictive equation for the vapor pressure of a mixed-electrolyte solution in terms of the vapor pressures of single-electrolyte solutions of the components. This equation is valid over the entire concentration range encountered in practice, without any empirical constants, and has a predictive accuracy of 2%. A predictive equation for the latent heat of vaporization is also developed and tested against experimental data.

    Notes: A rule of hydrodynamic similarity for a scale change of fluidized beds has been developed based on the governing equations of bubble and interstitial gas dynamics. When geometrically similar scale-up is to be carried out maintaining hydrodynamic similarity, the proposed similarity rule requires that two conditions be satisfied. The first condition assures a similarity in bubble coalescence. The second assures the similarities in bubble splitting and in the interstitial flow pattern. The present work proves theoretically that these two conditions are the necessary, and almost sufficient, conditions for hydrodynamic similarity. They consider not only bubble coalescence but also bubble splitting. The theory proposed was first tested by previous correlations for bubble diameter and grid zone structure, and second by experiment. It has been proved that as long as the present rule is satisfied, the longitudinal distribution of the average bubble diameter, stochastic variation around it, and the radial distribution of superficial bubble velocity can be maintained similar for a scale change.Application of the present rule to predict the bubbling and solid circulation characteristics in a large-scale unit by a small-scale experiment has thus proved promising, at least for Geldart group B particles. In order to further study the possibility of a similarity in mass transfer and chemical reactions, computation was carried out using the three-phase bubble assemblage model. If the effect of molecular diffusion is negligible, as in the case of fluidized bed combustion, even a chemical similarity is found to be possible.

    Notes: Kynch's theory of sedimentation is adopted to solve for the attainable steady state concentration in a vertical continuous sedimentation basin incorporating a thickener and a clarifier. The limiting flux solution corresponding to the local minimum at the flux concentration curve is proved to have a limited range of validity and is shown to apply only to the intermediate range of feed concentrations. This limit is replaced by a five-region diagram; the solution is determined by the feed coordinates in the flux concentration plane, with respect to the flux concentration curve. Each section exhibits different characteristic solutions for both the clarifier and the thickener.The analysis, which combines dispersion, dynamics, and stability considerations, reveals new possible ranges of operating conditions where the flux exceeds the limiting flux and solids are not entrained. The results, contradicting previous published work, are verified by a finite-difference dynamic simulator.

    Notes: A theoretical analysis has been performed to elucidate the relationship between two popular time delay compensation techniques, the Smith predictor and the analytical predictor. In general, use of these two techniques results in different closed-loop responses. It is only for the special case where the process model is perfect and set point changes occur, that the two techniques are equivalent. A modification of the analytical predictor has been proposed that allows the technique to be used with any feedback controller, instead of the special PI controller employed by Moore et al. (1970).

    Notes: A new method is described for detecting and locating a leak in a gas transport pipeline lying between two pump stations by an indirect acoustic method. The basic concept is to treat the pipeline as an acoustic tube (similar to a wind instrument), and to estimate the impulse response of the acoustic wave in the pipeline solely from the acoustic signal detected at two terminal sites in the pipeline. The test signal introduced at the input site is only acoustic noise; pipeline operation need not be interrupted. If a leak occurs in the pipeline, the impulse response of the acoustic wave in the pipeline has a sharp pulse or a step at a certain time that can be directly related to the site of the leak. Using the mathematical model of the pipeline acoustics, i.e., the wave equation, a theoretical basis is developed to explain how and why the leak can be detected and located. Experiments carried out in the laboratory under conditions comparable to realistic field conditions demonstrate the validity of the proposed detection method.

    Notes: The perturbed anisotropic chain theory (PACT) developed by Vimalchand and Donohue has been generalized to treat pure fluids that associate through hydrogen bonding, as well as mixtures of one associating component and several diluents. Using an approach similar to that of Heidemann and Prausnitz, a closed-form equation of state has been derived. It is applicable to simple as well as complex molecules at both gas and liquidlike densities and takes into account dipole and/or quadrupole moments. Molecular parameters were obtained by fitting the equation to experimental liquid density and vapor pressure data.

    Notes: The two-scale turbulence concept is recommended for modeling the turbulence in a baffled vessel equipped with a Rushton-type turbine impeller. A three-equation isotropic turbulence model is proposed that employs the balance equations for: the kinetic energy of the large scale vortices; the kinetic energy of the inertial subrange eddies; and the dissipation rate of the small-scale turbulence. The energy transfer rate from the large-scale vortices is prescribed algebraically. Flow patterns are modeled by solving the transport equations for vorticity, stream function, and tangential momentum. The Reynolds stresses are modeled by means of the effective viscosity, based on the three-equation model of turbulence. The calculated profiles of the mean velocity at the tank wall agree with experimental data obtained in the same system by means of a Pitot tube.

    Notes: A computer program designed to model the turbulent reacting flow in jet-stirred reactors has been developed. In solving the single-phase flow field, a two-equation turbulence closure was used to predict the turbulent eddy viscosity variation in the reactor. The model was used to predict the performance of a real reactor. The predicted results compared favorably with measurements in the field. It was found that the key to the reactor performance is the strength of the recirculating eddy caused by the jet entrainment.

    Notes: Rates of hydration of isobutene were measured with Amberlyst-15 catalyst particles in a differential, liquid-full recycle reactor operating at atmospheric pressure and 303 to 333 K. Catalysts pretreated in two different ways were studied. Liquid-to-particle mass transfer had a small but measurable effect on the rate. Intraparticle diffusion was more significant, as indicated by effectiveness factors from 0.26 for the larger catalyst particles (dp = 1.04 × 10-3 m) at 333 K to 0.84 for the smaller particles (dp = 0.45 × 10-3 m) at 303 K. The intrinsic rate was first-order in isobutene concentration with an activation energy of 67 kJ/mol. The intraparticle diffusion resistance is due to the macropores surrounding the very small gel-type microparticles of which the particles were composed.Some data were obtained for reaction rates in trickle-bed operation. Global rates were somewhat lower in the trickle-bed operation than in the liquid-full runs. Using the previously determined intrinsic kinetics and effectiveness factors, the liquid-to-particle mass transfer coefficients could be approximated for the trickle-bed operation.

    Notes: This paper describes a study of the possibility of using point efficiencies, measured in a small laboratory column, in the scale-up of distillation efficiencies. The conditions on a large rectangular tray were closely duplicated in a small glass Oldershaw column with one sieve tray having similar hole size and percent free area. Point efficiencies on the large rectangular sieve tray were deduced from the composition profiles and compared with the point efficiencies measured in the small column. A simple relationship between the two columns was found in terms of the froth heights and liquid holdups. The results demonstrate that the slightly lower point efficiencies measured in the Oldershaw column could be used in conjunction with a mathematical mass transfer model based on the eddy diffusion concept, to relate the point efficiencies to the tray efficiences, resulting in a conservative design provided either that allowance is made for other factors, such as nonuniform flow patterns and stagnant zones, or that these are eliminated. A wide range of composition was covered using the two systems MeOH-nPrOH and EtOH-nPrOH operating in the froth region.

    Notes: The separation of a He—CH4 mixture containing 9.95 mol% He in permeator modules that incorporate two different types of polymer membranes was studied theoretically and experimentally. The membranes were symmetric dense capillaries of silicone rubber and asymmetric hollow fibers of cellulose triacetate. These membranes exhibit reverse selectivities for He and CH4, silicone rubber being more permeable to CH4, and cellulose triacetate more permeable to He. The simultaneous use of these two types of membranes in a permeator enhances the enrichment and recovery of He compared to the levels obtained with a single-membrane permeator utilizing either membrane alone. The experimental results were found to confirm the theoretical predictions, the agreement being better at the lower stage cuts.

    Notes: Elution times determined from perturbation chromatography experiments are functions of all sorbing species isotherms through the concentration partial derivatives. Measurements at a sufficient number of appropriate compositions along with isotherm models and adjustable parameters allow reduction of the retention time data to VLE by a nonlinear parameter estimation procedure described in this paper. The method can be implemented for both empirical isotherm models, which can be used to minimize model deficiencies, and for theoretical thermodynamic models, which have extrapolation potential and may require fewer parameters.

    Notes: Infinite dilution activity coefficients of aroma compounds from various chemical series were measured in model food systems (water/carbohydrates, water/polyethylene-glycols) at concentrations of various solutes. These measurements were made with a specially designed equilibrium cell. Experimental results were used to determine the parameters of group contribution thermodynamic models. The predictive capacities of the equations obtained were shown to be quite precise (8% mean deviation).

    Notes: Three different pore size CoMo/Al2O3 catalysts, which had been deactivated to the same extent during bench-scale tests with an atmospheric resid, were examined for coke and metal deposits, diffusivity, and intrinsic activity for hydrodesulfurization, hydrogenation, and hydrodenitrogenation using model compounds. The aged catalysts had very low effective diffusivities and lower intrinsic activities than the fresh catalysts. Both metals and coke deposits were responsible for lowering diffusivity, but activity reduction appears to be predominantly due to metal deposits.

    Notes: Ultrafine spherical titanium, silicon, and aluminium oxide particles were prepared by the thermal decomposition of their alkoxide vapors, produced by evaporation and subsequent heating. High-concentration ultrafine particles having geometric mean diameters ranging between 0.01 and 0.06 μm and a geometric standard deviation of about 1.4 were obtained by varying the temperatures of the evaporator containing the liquid alkoxides and the reactor furnace, and the flow rate of carrier gas. For furnace temperatures lower than 400°C for TiO2 and 1000°C for SiO2 and Al2O3, the particles obtained were found to be amorphous. The observed changes in the particle size distributions due to changes in operating conditions were compared with those predicted theoretically by solving the discrete-continuous aerosol general dynamic equation accounting for coagulation and generation of monomer by thermal decomposition. The effect of monomer number concentration on the size distribution of generated particles was found to be qualitatively explained.

    Notes: The different behavior of fluid density and viscosity in going from the dilute gas to the dense fluid state gives rise to kinematic viscosities which, in the near supercritical region, are lower than for liquid metals. As a consequence, the relative importance of natural convection (as measured by the ratio of buyoant to inertial forces) is two orders of magnitude higher in a supercritical fluid (at constant Reynolds number) than in normal liquids.Binary diffusion coefficients of nonvolatile solutes in supercritical fluids were measured with a technique that involved laminar flow and diffusion in a rectangular channel. The solution to this hydrodynamic problem is presented. By varying the inclination of the solute source plane with respect to the horizontal position, apparent diffusion coefficients were measured that were up to six times higher than the “true” coefficients.Experimental binary diffusion coefficients, including published literature data, were analyzed in the light of hydrodynamic (Stokes-Einstein) theory. The analysis suggests that under the high-density, low-viscosity conditions that characterize supercritical fluids, hydrodynamic behavior at the molecular level is approached, and can be used as a basis for data extrapolation.

    Notes: Pulse-response data for the hydrogenation of α-methyl styrene were obtained as a function of poisoning of the Pd/Al2O3 catalyst. The reaction is a first-order, reversible adsorption of hydrogen followed by a first-order, irreversible surface reaction. The experiments, at 298 to 323 K and atmospheric pressure, were carried out in a three-phase slurry reactor for which mass transport effects could be accurately accounted.Independent adsorption equilibrium data in cumene slurries showed that adsorption occurred to the same extent on both poisoned and unpoisoned sites with a heat of adsorption, ΔHc = -16.3 kJ/mol. Converted to styrene as the slurry liquid, ΔHs = -20.9 kJ/mol.The zero and first moments of the response curves indicated that the rate constant for the surface reaction was independent of the extent of poisoning. The analysis required developing a new theory for interpreting dynamic data where reactant adsorption occurred on both poisoned and unpoisoned sites. The rate constant (per unit mass of catalyst) for adsorption decreased continuously to zero as the extent of poisoning increased.The results are consistent with the concept that poisoning reduced the number of sites active for reaction, but that the activity per site for the surface reaction was constant. However, the activity per site for adsorption, while constant at poison levels up to 40%, appeared to decrease sharply at higher levels.

    Notes: This study was designed to evaluate the effects of internal droplet convection on the extraction that occurs during generation of a dispersed phase. A photographic determination of dispersed-phase controlled mass transfer from liquid droplets in the formation stage demonstrates a strong dependence on formation time. Convection appears to control mass transfer during rapid drop formation, but an abrupt transition in transfer coefficient occurs as time of formation increases. Diffusion calculations overestimate total extraction for long formation times.

    Notes: An experimental and theoretical study was conducted to identify the flow behavior of gas and particulates in the freeboard of a gas-fluidized bed. The axial velocity and turbulence intensity distributions were measured along the centerline and across the freeboard. A laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) was used for the experiments. A technique based on fluorescence emission was developed to discriminate between gas-phase and particle-phase velocity information. The gas phase measurements revealed a strong influence of bubble induced turbulence on gas velocity distribution. The axial particle velocity indicated a two-stage decay with height. Models were developed to predict centerline gas velocity and transport disengagement height.

    Notes: A finite-element method is used to solve the full Navier-Stokes and energy equations for the problem of laminar combined convection from two horizontal cylinders in tandem arrangement. From comparisons with the previous theoretical and experimental results of a single-cylinder situation, it is found that the behaviors flow and heat transfer in the upstream cylinder are close to those in a single-cylinder, but this is not the case for the downstream cylinder.

    Notes: The problem of synthesizing processing systems via simultaneous structural and parameter optimization is addressed in this paper. Based on a superstructure representation for embedding alternative configurations, a general mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) framework is presented for the synthesis problem. An efficient outer-approximation algorithm is described for the solution of the underlying optimization problem, which is characterized by linear binary variables and continuous variables that appear in nonlinear functions. The proposed algorithm is based on a bounding sequence that requires the analysis of few system configurations, and the solution of a master problem that identifies new candidate structures. Application of the proposed algorithm is illustrated with the optimal synthesis of gas pipelines.

    Notes: Flow rate and concentration measurements in a steady state process are reconciled by weighted least squares so that the conservation laws and other constraints are obeyed. Two projection matrices are constructed in turn, in order to decompose the problem into three subproblems to be solved in sequence. The first matrix eliminates all unmeasured component flow rates and concentrations from the equations; the second then removes the unmeasured total flow rates. The adjustments to component flow rates are iteratively determined, starting with guessed values of unmeasured total flow rates.Chi-square and normal test statistics are derived by linearizing the equations, to allow detection of gross errors in imbalances and adjustments of measurements.

    Notes: A fluorimetric technique was used to determine detailed residence time and velocity distribution on commercial sieve trays installed in a five-tray, 1.22 m dia. air/water simulator. Results show a strong effect of the gas rate on the residence time distribution. At low air rates, isochron lines of high residence time are found at the column wall, and the variance distributions suggest the existence of zones of different degrees of mixing. The velocity profiles at Fs (vapor velocity load) factors less than 0.65 show severe flow nonuniformities characterized by a high velocity at the centerline and stagnant zone close to the wall. At higher Fs factors the velocity maldistribution seems to be relatively mild. Correlations are presented to estimate the velocity distribution on the tray as a function of the gas rate.

    Notes: A low-order modeling technique for separation processes is developed by considering a staged column as a compartment system in which a number of stage are lumped to form an equivalent stage. This method leads to low-order models of separation processes directly and without linearization. Moreover, the resulting models have state variables and parameters that are physically significant. In contrast to alternative model reduction methods, compartmental analysis guarantees preservation of both material balances and steady states for arbitrary changes in the input variables.A comparison of compartmental analysis to a recently proposed technique based on orthogonal collocation, both methods incorporating an equimolal overflow assumption, shows the efficiency and robustness of the compartmental method.

The proposed redox mechanism contains three surface complexes: -CO2K, -COK, and -CK. The oxide groups are the intermediates during C/CO2 gasification. The completely reduced form, -CK, is the end product of catalyst reduction and is the precursor for K loss. The stoichiometries of these surface groups are confirmed by oxygen and potassium balances.

    Notes: Experimental gas-solid adsorption measurements were made on the binary and ternary mixtures of H2S, CO2, and C3H8 on H-mordenite molecular sieve zeolite at 30°C. The C3H8 containing binaries and the ternary mixture exhibited nonideal behavior, as evidenced by the azeotropelike crossovers in the composition domains and by the peaks in the total amount adsorbed surface. The ternary data were successfully predicted with the activity coefficients calculated by the spreading-pressure-dependent equation. Models that neglect the spreading-pressure dependence can only qualitatively predict the nonidealities.

    Notes: Experimental kinetic data for three Australian coals are compared with predictions from the mathematical model developed in Part I. For these coals, as well as data reported for North American coals, the model is found to show good agreement, using the characteristic molecular weight as the only parameter. The effects of reaction time and temperature are coupled via a severity index that arises in the model as a dimensionless reaction time. The model is also shown to be applicable when catalysts are present. The product distribution for a particular coal seems to be a function only of the conversion even in the presence of catalysts, as long as the chemical reaction controls the rate of liquefaction.

    Notes: A molecular-thermodynamic correlation has been developed for calculating the inhibition effect of methanol on the formation of hydrates in moist gas mixtures. Six phases are potentially present in these mixtures: gas, aqueous liquid, hydrocarbon liquid, ice, and hydrate structures I and II. For a given temperature and system composition, the molecular-thermodynamic method described here allows computation of the hydrate-point pressure as well as relative amounts and compositions of all coexisting phases. Good agreement is obtained when calculated results are compared with diverse experimental data reported in the literature. The correlation given here may be useful for computeraided design for gas processing and transportation.

    Notes: The isothermal decomposition of gibbsite (aluminum hydroxide) was studied under controlled, pure water vapor pressures from 50 to 3,000 Pa over the temperature range from 458 to 508 K; the effect of sample particle size was also investigated. The partial conversion to boehmite (AlOOH) and the subsequent formation of a ρ-transition alumina product phase were followed with respect to the reactor operating conditions. Nitrogen and water vapor adsorption measurements were used to evaluate the chemical kinetics of the formation of ρ-alumina in terms of an interface velocity, and to interpret the observed dependencies on temperature and water vapor pressure. An adsorption/decomposition model is presented for these kinetics. The interpretation is consistent with the observation that decomposition rate is inversely proportional to the square of the water vapor pressure. The apparent activation energy of 342 ± 15 kJ/mol includes a water adsorption energy, as well as the chemical decomposition contribution of 260 ± 20 kJ/mol.

    Notes: A correlation is presented for the thermodynamic properties of pure fluids containing small or large molecules. The residual Helmholtz energy is given in terms of perturbed-hard-chain (PHC) theory, extended to polar fluids with a multipolar expansion. The novel feature of this correlation is a separation of the Helmholtz energy into low-density and high-density contributions. The low-density contribution follows from a virial expansion and the high-density contribution from a perturbation expansion. For intermediate densities, a continuous function is used to interpolate between the two density limits. This modification of PHC theory improves agreement with experimental second virial coefficients, vapor pressures, and saturated liquid densities. Since all molecular parameters used here have a well-defined physical significance, they can be reliably estimated for high-molecular-weight-fluids where experimental data are scarce. More important, separation into low-density and high-density contributions allows separate mixing rules for each density region; this flexibility in mixing rules significantly improves representation of mixture properties, as discussed in Part II.

    Notes: Isothermal, isobaric measurements were made of the rate of hydrogen absorption by a slurry of LaNi5 powder suspended in n-undecane in a baffled stirred reactor. The data were interpreted using a model emobodying three resistances in series: a gas-liquid mass transfer resistance, a liquid-solid mass transfer resistance, and an “overall reaction resistance.”At the highest agitator speeds employed, 2,000 rpm, conversions of LaNi5 to hydride of 90% or better were obtained within one minute or less, thereby confirming the potential of the metal hydride slurry concept for commercial applications.

    Notes: Numerical solutions to the unaveraged mass balance equation for the case of a flat mobile interface reveal that both high- and low-frequency velocity fluctuations can contribute to mass transfer. This is in contrast to transport to a solid boundary where only low-frequency fluctuations, normal to the wall, are important. The average mass transfer coefficient is found to depend on Schmidt number to the -0.5 power, in agreement with classical theories. It is related to the velocity field in the liquid primarily through the mean-square value of the gradient of normal velocity fluctuations at the interface.

    Notes: A solute diffusing through a solid gives rise to a change in volume. This swelling can be viewed as a strain, and it is possible to obtain the accompanying stress using elasticity theory. The theory provides two ways by which stresses can be generated. The first comes from the condition of impenetrability where the system generates stress to exclude certain configurations during deformation. The second is due to imposed restrictions on the geometry during the swelling process. Larché and Cahn have provided the thermodynamics for such systems, from which the chemical potential can be used to obtain a phenomenological expression for flux and an expression for the solubility. These two are sufficient to obtain the sorption response in most systems. Solutions have been obtained here.

    Notes: A general form of the population balance equation, including aggregation and rupture terms, was solved numerically to model the experimental calcium oxalate distributions generated in Part I of this series. Semiempirical formulations for the aggregation and disruption functions were found that resulted in excellent matches between experimental and predicted distributions. Both the aggregation and the disruption rates were found to vary with oxalate concentration and inner cylinder rpm of the aggregator.

    Notes: Tracer diffusion coefficients were measured for benzene, toluene, mesitylene, naphthalene, and phenanthrene in dense ethanol at 0.56 ≤ TR ≤ 1.07 and ρR ≥ 1.44. The results were used to examine the temperature dependence of the degree of association between ethanol molecules across the entire range of temperature. The hard-sphere tracer diffusion equation and the Stokes-Einstein equation were used to develop two engineering correlations. The former approach was found to be adequate for solvents of relatively compact molecules, and the latter to be more general in its applications. The absolute deviation of prediction from observed values of tracer diffusivities is 4%, with a maximum error of 13%.

    Notes: A criterion is developed for the selection of the best pairing of the control and manipulated variables of a multiloop control system. This criterion is based on the difficulty caused by the interaction terms (the off-diagonal elements) in finding the inverse of the steady state gain matrix. From an analysis based on the proposition that the most desired or best pairing is that one for which the system most closely resembles a set of independent single-loop systems, a quantitative measure of the best pairing is obtained. Although the development of the pairing criterion is based on purely algebraic principles, the validity of the pairing criterion is evident from analogous developments obtained within the control framework. Furthermore, it is shown that the pairing criterion may be used to determine the stability of a multiloop control system, thus enhancing the value of the criterion presented.

    Notes: This paper focuses on two aspects of smelting operation that are highly dependent on the rate of heat transfer in the molten bath. As a consequence of the elevated temperature and the corrosive nature of the fluoride mixture, the cell sidewalls are designed so that some electrolyte will freeze onto them, protecting the carbon from erosion and at the same time insulating the cell against excessive heat loss. The thickness and dynamic variation of this frozen ledge are determined by the convective heat transfer from the bath to the freeze surface.Another situation where the rate of convective heat flow exerts a subtle influence is the dissolution of aluminium oxide powder in the bath. The localized feeding of large quantities of the powder causes transient electrolyte freezing on some of the added material, hindering its dissolution and causing the formation of an alumina sludge below the molten aluminium pad.

    Notes: Existing models for laminar flow in tubular reactors neglect radial velocities in the momentum transport equation. The axial velocity distribution is calculated assuming fully developed flow wherein axial velocities are in local equilibrium with the radial viscosity profile. A test of this assumption has been devised using a representative model of the Newtonian viscosity, μ(r, z), and by reconstructing the radial velocity components using the continuity equation. The assumption of fully developed flow is shown to be a valid approximation for typical polymerization reactions. However, the fact that radial velocities are negligible with respect to momentum transport does not mean they are negligible with respect to convective diffusion of heat and mass. Radial convection is shown to be important for typical polymerization and heat transfer examples.

    Notes: A model for caustic propagation in a core during continuous injection is combined with the considerations of interfacial reactions proposed in Part I in order to examine the role of dynamic effects in continuous alkaline flooding. Axial dispersion of caustic and its reversible uptake by the reservoir rock are taken into account. From this model, the interfacial tension between an isolated oil globule and the surrounding flood water can be predicted as a function of time using the knowledge of the kinetics of interfacial reactions, the rock adsorption equilibria, and the longitudinal dispersion coefficient.
