    Notes: The present paper attempts to evaluate the fracture mechanics parameters, the stress intensity factor (K) and Rice's energy integral (J) in plane strain conditions for three-point bend specimens. Both the parameters have been evaluated by the FEM using higher order isoparametric elements (i.e. quadratic elements). The crack tip elastic singularity (1/√r) has been taken into account by the use of the special crack tip elements of degenerate triangular element type as well as the fine eight-noded isoparametric plane elements. The stress distribution has been compared with the Westergaard solution in the vicinity of the crack. The K and J values have also been-compared with the theoretical results.

    Notes: A generalized boundary integral equation method for the solution of the Laplace equation is developed based on the Cauchy integral theorem for analytical complex variable functions. Although the approach is complicated by the utilization of complex variable theory, the resulting model involves direct integration along straight-line boundary segments (elements) rather than using quadrature formulae that are required in current real variable boundary element formulations. Previously published boundary integral equation methods based on the Cauchy integral theorem are shown to be a subset of the generalized model theory developed in this paper.

    Notes: An optimum design sensitivity analysis capability is reported which exploits the approximation concepts-dual method formulation of the minimum weight structural sizing problem. An efficient iterative solution technique is used to facilitate determination of sensitivity derivatives for both primal and dual variables. Estimates on the useful range of parameter perturbations, over which the optimum design sensitivity projections can be expected to yield satisfactory revised optimum designs, are also obtained. Numerical results for several example problems will be presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the capability reported.

    Notes: An optimal control finite element approximation of the penalization type for the solution of incompressible viscous Navier-Stokes equations is presented. This paper has proved the convergence of its minimizing sequence and the existence of the solution for the optimal control problem corresponding to the penalty variational problem of the Navier-Stokes equations. Based on this method and the conjugate gradient algorithm, the program for solving the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes problem has been developed, and some numerical results have also been provided.

    Notes: We present numerical solutions for the following Stefan problems. The half-space z 〉 0 is initially filled with liquid at its fusion temperature. The boundary z = 0, taken to be the x axis, is maintained at a constant temperature, less than the fusion temperature, for x 〈 0. For x 〉 0, the first problem considers the case of an insulated boundary, and the second problem considers the case of the boundary maintained at the fusion temperature. This gives rise to a solid-liquid interface curved in the (x, z) plane.

    Notes: For the semi-infinite crack propagating quasi-statically in a porous-elastic medium, the boundary integral equation method (BIEM), based on a reciprocal principle, is formulated for the governing equations of the Biot model of linear porous-elasticity. The resulting numerical scheme is efficient since the discretization of the solution unknowns is required only along the axis of symmetry of a fracture. Fracture propagation criteria based on both elastic and plastic constitutive relations are investigated. Practical applications of the model are expected in the failure of overconsolidated clay, earthquake prediction and underground hydraulic fracturing for energy exploration.

    Notes: Recently developed computer aided design systems for the design and modification of complex physical solids using interactive computer graphics offer the exciting possibility of an integrated design/analysis system. Called geometric modellers, these systems build complex solids from primitive solids (cubes, cylinders, spheres, etc.) and macro solids (combinations of primitives). To provide an effective finite element analysis capability for these systems, methods must be devised to ease the burden of discretizing the solid geometry into a user controlled finite element mesh. In this paper we describe a new class of transitional blended finite elements which make substantially simpler the task of finite element mesh generation and local mesh refinement. Computational experience indicates that numerical accuracy is not compromised by use of these flexible elements.

    Notes: A non-iterative method is presented for solving a system of algebraic equations forming a banded matrix with each diagonal submatrix being tridiagonal and all other submatrices being diagonal. A recursion relation is assumed between successive elements of the solution vector. This relation is determined by equating a linearly combined form of it with the original set of equations also being linearly combined. The solution vector is determined by back-substitution of elements in the recursion relation. Since the method takes advantage of the banded structure of the matrix, it is more efficient than the conventional methods. A FORTRAN program that incorporates the present method is included.

    Notes: A finite element model that is suitable for the analysis of shells of revolution with arbitrary local deviations is presented. The model employs three types of shell elements: rotational, general and transitional. The rotational shell elements, which are most efficient, are used in the region where the shell is axisymmetric. The general shell elements, which can simulate almost any shell geometry, are used in the local region of the deviation. The transitional shell elements connect these two distinctively different types of elements and make it possible to combine them in a single analysis.The form of the global stiffness matrix is somewhat unique in the new model. Non-zero terms are not confined to a narrow band along the diagonal, but occur throughout the matrix. This is due to the following: (1) two different types of nodes, ring nodes and point nodes, are combined in a single analysis; and (2) a locally non-axisymmetric geometry creates a coupling of the Fourier harmonic coefficients of the rotational elements. Yet, the matrix still contains many scattered zero terms that should be considered for numerical efficiency. In this paper an efficient solution procedure that is effective for this situation is developed. The steps include the use of a substructuring technique and separate partial harmonic analysis. A numerical example is presented and compared with existing solutions to demonstrate the capabilities and the efficiency of the new model.

    Notes: Viscoplastic constitutive models typically lead to compliance (strain-stress) relationships, which must be inverted for use in the finite element displacement method. Computational requirements can be increased significantly for models of practical size due to the large number of matrix inversions which are necessary. This paper describes a method of obtaining the required stress-strain relations analytically, thus eliminating the need for numerous matrix inversions in the solution. The technique is applicable to a number of commonly-used viscoplastic models, as demonstrated in the examples.

    Notes: Special quadrature rules are described for elastic finite elements that have rq behaviour (0 〈 q 〈 1) directly induced in natural element co-ordinates. In general, the quadrature points and weights can vary with the exponent q. For two-dimensional problems with a square-root singularity (q = 1/2), the use of special quadrature results in significant improvements over regular Gauss quadrature. The development of special quadrature rules for three-dimensional elements is shown to be a difficult task.     Notes: A transfer-matrix analysis is presented for determining the static behaviour of thick beams of ‘multimodular materials’ (i.e. materials which have different elastic behaviour in tension and compression, with nonlinear stress-strain curves approximated as piecewise linear, with four or more segments). To validate the transfer-matrix method results, a closed-form solution is also presented for cases in which the neutral-surface location is constant along the beam axis. Numerical results for axial displacement, transverse deflection, bending slope, bending moment, transverse shear, axial force and location of neutral surface are presented for multimodular and bimodular models of unidirectional aramid cordrubber. The transfer-matrix method results agree very well with the closed-form solutions.

    Notes: An effective surface integral and finite element hybrid (SIFEH) method has been developed to model fracture problems in finite plane domains. This hybridization by (incrementally) linear superposition combines the best features of both component methods. Finite elements are used to model the finite domain (and eventually nonlinearity), while continuous distributions of dislocations (resulting in surface integral equations) are used to model the fracture (i.e. displacement discontinuity). This method has been implemented in a computer program and results of representative problems are presented: these compare very well with known solutions and they demonstrate the computational advantages of SIFEH over other numerical methods (including the individual components).

    Notes: A unified simple 6 degrees-of-freedom beam finite element and the associated computational procedures have been developed for the fast and efficient solution of a wide class of static and dynamic response problems of the beam type with material and/or geometrical nonlinearities.The material nonlinearity is treated by including its effect in the governing equations by forming the stiffness matrix of each element using a two-dimensional grid of Gauss points and using the material properties at each point corresponding to the uniaxial strain at that point. Examples are provided for metal and reinforced concrete beams.A powerful yet straightforward method for the solution of elastica problems of beams and frames, using the beam element developed by the senior author, has been extended for determining the dynamic response of beams undergoing large displacements, including large rotations.The solution procedure involves piecewise linearization of response equations and iterations at each incremental step to achieve equilibrium. The solution procedure is simple and easy to apply. A variety of problems is solved to determine the applicability of the proposed simple formulations. Excellent agreement with existing analytical solutions which employ higher order elements demonstrates the efficiency and versatility of the present simple beam element in nonlinear analysis.

    Notes: A concise survey of formulation methods of geometric and material nonlinearity problems is given. Differences between existing formulations in the literature are discussed. A consistent Lagrangian and updated Lagrangian formulations are derived from the energy balance equation transformed to the proper reference configuration. Differences between the existing formulations and similar ones in the literature are found to be in specific geometric nonlinear terms in the final incremental equation as well as in the definition of the load increment vector. Specific forms of constitutive equations for elastic and elastoplastic materials are presented. Some of the forms used by other authors in application to elastoplastic materials are shown to be inconsistent. Sample numerical examples intended for checking some particular points in the formulation are presented.

    Notes: Two numerical methods for solving two-point boundary-value problems associated with systems of first-order nonlinear ordinary differential equations are described. The first method, which is based on Lobatto quadrature, requires four internal function evaluations for each subinterval. It does not need derivatives and is of order h7, where h is the space chop. The second method, which is similar to the first but is based on Lobatto-Hermite quadrature, makes the additional use of derivatives to achieve O(h9) accuracy. Results of computational experiments comparing these methods with other known methods are given.

    Notes: When applied to large sparse sets of simultaneous equations, classical iterative methods may yield very poor convergence rates. This paper gives an incomplete Choleski-conjugate gradient algorithm (ICCG) which has reliably good convergence rates at the expense of computing and using at each iteration an incomplete Choleski factor of the coefficient matrix.     Notes: A method is presented for performing efficient and stable finite element calculations of heat conduction with quadrilaterals using one-point quadrature. The stability in space is obtained by using a stabilization matrix which is orthogonal to all linear fields and its magnitude is determined by a stabilization parameter. It is shown that the accuracy is almost independent of the value of the stabilization parameter over a wide range of values; in fact, the values 3, 2 and 1 for the normalized stabilization parameter lead to the 5-point finite difference, 9-point finite difference and fully integrated finite element operators, respectively, for rectangular meshes; numerical experiments reported here show that the three have identical rates of convergence in the L2 norm. Eigenvalues of the element matrices, which are needed for stability limits, are also given. Numerical applications are used to show that the method yields accurate solutions with large increases in efficiency, particularly in nonlinear problems.

    Notes: A set of path independent integrals is constructed for the calculation of the generalized stress intensity factors occurring in elastic plates having sharp re-entrant corners or notches with stress-free faces and subjected to Mode I, II or III type loading. The Mode I integral is then demonstrated to enjoy a reasonable degree of numerical path independence in a finite element analysis of a test problem having an exact solution. Finally, this integral is used on the same problem in conjunction with a regularizing, finite element, procedure or superposition method. The results indicate that sufficiently accurate estimates of these stress intensity factors for engineering purposes can be achieved with little computational effort.

    Notes: Hybrid analysis techniques based on the combined use of finite elements and the classical Bubnov-Galerkin approximation are presented for predicting nonlinear steady-state temperature distributions in structures and solids. In these hybrid techniques the modelling versatility of the finite element method is preserved and a substantial reduction in the number of degrees-of-freedom is achieved by expressing the vector of nodal temperatures as a linear combination of a small number of global-temperature modes, or basis vectors. The Bubnov-Galerkin technique is then used to compute the coefficients of the linear combination (i.e. the amplitudes of the global-temperature modes).The basis vectors chosen are the path derivatives commonly used in perturbation techniques, namely, the derivatives of the nodal-temperature vector with respect to a preselected control (or path) parameter(s). The vectors are generated by using the finite element model of the initial discretization. Also, the performance of alternate sets of basis vectors is investigated. In the alternate sets, only a few path derivatives are generated, and they are augmented by a constant vector representing a uniform temperature rise (or drop), and by reciprocal vectors with nonzero components equal to the reciprocals of the nonzero components of the path derivatives. A problem-adaptive computational algorithm is presented for efficient evaluation of global approximation vectors and generation of the reduced system of equations and for monitoring the accuracy of the reduced system of equations.The potential of the proposed reduction methods for the solution of large-scale, nonlinear steady-state thermal problems is also discussed. The effectiveness of these methods is demonstrated by means of four numerical examples, including conduction, convection and radiation modes of heat transfer.This study shows that the use of the uniform-temperature mode and the path derivatives as global approximation vectors significantly increases the accuracy of the solutions obtained by reduction methods, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of these methods for the solution of large-scale, nonlinear thermal problems.

    Notes: Stiffness matrices for three-dimensional beam elements that include the effect of warping restraint on elastic torsional response have been derived by various investigators. Using one of the available stiffness matrices and assuming that the warping boundary conditions can be specified on a member-by-member basis, an elastic ‘warping’ support is introduced to represent conditions of partial warping restraint at the member ends. The concept of a ‘warping indicator’ is then introduced to facilitate use of warping springs. Following this, static condensation is used to eliminate the restrained warping degrees-of-freedom. The condensed stiffness matrices for the elements can then be assembled to yield a global stiffness matrix. In the global matrix, continuous warping degrees-of-freedom, that is, those internal to a member represented by several elements, are expressed in local co-ordinates. The remainder are expressed in global co-ordinates. In the force recovery phase, it is shown that an ‘indirect’ method yields most accurate results for the bimoment and warping torsion when the twist function is represented by a cubic polynomial. Solutions to examples of linear elastic analysis are compared with well-known analytical solutions to demonstrate the application of the method.

    Notes: Simple solutions are extracted from the exact compatibility equations of inextensional bending for a special class of shell shapes, and it is speculated that these solutions provide useful criteria towards evaluating finite elements for these and closely related shapes. Curved finite elements of a quadratic parametric representation, which do not belong to the special class, are then studied. By using a series of exact inextensional bending displacements, it is concluded from numerical evidence that the criteria apply to finite element shapes in this representation when they are shallow, as is usually the case in practice.     Notes: The aim of the work reported in this paper is to present the new formulation of the integral equation method for non-self-adjoint problems and to apply the method to stability problems of elastic continua subjected to non-conservative loadings. A general non-self-adjoint eigenvalue problem stated in terms of differential operators is transformed into a set of coupled integral equations. Our derivation of integral equations is based on an inverse formulation of a canonical form for the original problem and the corresponding fundamental solution pair. Three well-known non-conservative stability problems in elasticity are examined by this integral equation method as illustrative examples. The approximate values of the critical parameters of sample problems demonstrate a sufficient accuracy through a comparison of other values.

    Notes: A method is described to derive finite element schemes for the scalar convection equation in one or more space dimensions. To produce accurate temporal differencing, the method employs forward-time Taylor series expansions including time derivatives of second- and third-order which are evaluated from the governing partial differential equation. This yields a generalized time-discretized equation which is successively discretized in space by means of the standard Bubnov-Galerkin finite element method. The technique is illustrated first in one space dimension. With linear elements and Euler, leap-frog and Crank-Nicolson time stepping, several interesting relations with standard Galerkin and recently developed Petrov-Galerkin methods emerge and the new Taylor-Galerkin schemes are found to exhibit particularly high phase-accuracy with minimal numerical damping. The method is successively extended to deal with variable coefficient problems and multi-dimensional situations.

    Notes: A hybrid-stress eight-node isoparametric element is developed for the analysis of thin or thick multilayer fiber-reinforced composite plates. Transverse shear deformation effects are included by allowing for individual layer cross-section warping for thick laminates, or alternatively, laminate non-normal cross-section rotations for thin to moderately thick laminates. All stress components are included and are interpolated independently within each layer. Interlayer surface traction continuity and appropriate upper/lower surface traction-free conditions are exactly satisfied. The layer stress field is selected on the basis of earlier single-layer element studies so that the resulting element is naturally invariant with respect to co-ordinate translation or rotations, is non-locking in the thin-plate limit, and the element stiffness is of correct rank. An example for which an elasticity solution is available is used to demonstrate the element performance. Schemes for reduction of element stiffness computation time are also presented.

    Notes: Starting with a mathematical statement of the convergence requirements for an element stiffness matrix, the paper discusses displacement shape functions that may be used in connection with the potential energy principle. In short, these functions must be force orthogonal and energy orthogonal, but they need not be conforming (satisfy interelement compatibility). It is shown that the requirements to the displacement functions may be greatly relaxed through slight modifications of the coupling stiffness between fundamental and higher order displacement modes. Several alternative formulations are examined. In particular, a new ‘free formulation’ is suggested. Using this form, which is very simple, the only requirement to the displacement patterns used is that they should contain the fundamental deformation modes and be linearly independent. Applications of the theory to triangular and rectangular plate bending elements are shown; the simple stiffness matrix for the latter is given explicitly. The numerical results compare favourably with other types of finite elements.

    Notes: An algorithm, for use on a digital computer, is explained for cutting multiply connected regions in three-dimensional space. The algorithm is suitable for complex electromagnetic field problems where a magnetic scalar potential, affected by current loops, is to be calculated in a multiply connected region. Problems in fluid dynamics with vorticity affecting a scalar potential, could also be attacked with this algorithm. Since finite element methods are ubiquitous in field calculations, the cuts of the space constructed by the algorithm should ideally correspond to the given discretization; this can be arranged by an application of the Lebesgue Covering Theorem, for which a second algorithm is provided.

    Notes: This work presents an optimality criteria method which accurately and efficiently solves the structural optimization problem of trusses subject to deflection and stress constraints. The method is based upon the Newton-Raphson method and a first-order approximation both for deflection and stress constraints using the method of virtual work. It solves the problem rigorously and no serious difficulties have yet been encountered in spite of the drawbacks inherent in the Newton-Raphson method. Worked examples show its superiority to other methods and its ability to cope with trusses with many members and subject to multiple constraints.

    Notes: It is well known that the analysis of a horizontally layered elastic material can be considerably simplified by the introduction of a Fourier or Hankel transform and the application of the finite layer approach. The conventional finite layer (and finite element) stiffness approach breaks down when applied to incompressible materials. In this paper these difficulties are overcome by the introduction of an exact finite layer flexibility matrix. This flexibility matrix can be assembled in much the same way as the stiffness matrix and does not suffer from the disadvantage of becoming infinite for an incompressible material. The method is illustrated by a series of examples drawn from the geotechnical area, where it is observed that many natural and man-made deposits are horizontally layered and where it is necessary to consider incompressible behaviour for undrained conditions.

    Notes: A finite difference solution for the transient nonlinear heat conduction equation in a finite slab with a radiation boundary condition is proposed. An implicit finite difference approximation is used which enables accurate estimation of the surface temperature as well as prevention of oscillation of computed values at the surfaces. A two-time level implicit method is used, while Taylor's forward projection method is employed for taking account of the nonlinearities. An iterative method is described which predicts unknown surface conditions. An example is illustrated which is typical of those that arise in practical applications. The results demonstrate that the method is remarkable in its stability to predict surface conditions without debilitation.

    Notes: A linear model for the solidification of a dilute binary alloy is presented. In this model the solidus and liquidus curves are linear. As a consequence internal energy depends linearly upon temperature and concentration. The formulation is a generalization of the well-known enthalpy method to treat a phase change problem involving coupled heat and mass transfer. Both analytic and numerical formulations are given. Results from the latter are presented and compared with an explicit solution of Rubinstein for a Stefan-like problem posed in a semi-infinite slab. Some remarks on the behaviour of the explicit solution are given.

    Notes: The paper describes an algorithm for generating maximum entropy distributions for probabilistic data. The central moments of the data form constraint equations developed from Jaynes' formalism, which are solved by mathematical programming. Criteria are presented for selecting starting points and scaling parameters, upon which the accuracy and efficiency of the algorithm depends. Results are given of tests in which maximum entropy distributions are generated from the moment information of numerous analytical distributions. They show that four moments are generally required to produce good agreement and that maximum entropy distributions can represent most data populations very well.     Notes: This is the first in a series of three papers in which we discuss a method for ‘post-processing’ a finite element solution to obtain high accuracy approximations for displacements, stresses, stress intensity factors, etc. Rather than take the values of these quantities ‘directly’ from the finite element solution, we evaluate certain weighted averages of the solution over the entire region. These yield approximations are of the same order of accuracy as the strain energy. We obtain error estimates, and also present some numerical examples to illustrate the practical effectiveness of the technique.     Notes: A wide variety of methods have been proposed for solving implicit second-order systems of differential equations such as arise in structural and mechanical vibration analyses. Here we discuss a class of methods, based on second derivative formulae, some of which have previously been used by Enright.1 We show them to have desirable analytic and implementation properties. We relate these methods to others recently proposed by Brusa and Nigro and by Serbin, showing that we obtain algorithms which have all the desirable properties of their methods and which can also be extended to classes of practical problems which were not considered by these other authors. Since implicit first-order systems are also important in practice, for example in finite element analyses of heat conduction problems, we demonstrate the efficient implementation of the second derivative formulae in this case too.

    Notes: Analytical comparative solutions are often needed to assess the accuracy of proposed elements or proposed iterative schemes for potential flow numerical calculations. Traditionally, the flow over a circular cylinder, placed in a wind tunnel, has served for such a test and the results compared to what is thought to be an exact solution. We point out here that there is no exact solution for the flow over a circular cylinder in a wind tunnel, for practical values of wind tunnel height to cylinder radius, but that an exact solution can only be found for the flow over an oval cylinder. We derive that exact solution and provide numerical comparisons, using triangular elements, with both the stream function and the velocity potential for the incompressible case. In addition, numerical results for compressible flows up to critical Mach number are presented.

    Notes: We discuss properties of methods proposed recently by Gellert1 and by Brusa and Nigro2 for solving systems of second-order ordinary differential equations. In both cases, we extend the derivations to obtain whole families of methods with improved stability properties (roughly equivalent to L-stability for first-order systems) and we show that obtaining improvement in stability properties results in a deterioration in accuracy and/or implementation properties. Also we bring out the relationship (and in some cases equivalence) of these methods to others proposed in the literature. In particular, we show that the methods proposed by the above authors are essentially equivalent to well-known methods of long standing, namely Padé approximant methods for equivalent first-order systems of ordinary differential equations.

    Notes: A general, consistent and accurate procedure for obtaining difference equations from differential equations is presented and illustrated by several examples. The procedure is an extension of the integral method and incorporates what is known of the solution to the differential equation in the formation of the corresponding difference equation. For the same accuracy, large increases in grid size over that obtained by standard Taylor's series approximations are possible. Both boundary-value and initial-value problems are treated.

    Notes: The standard isoparametric transformation for finite element analysis is shown to be only a special case of a more general transformation which allows for flexibility in locating side and interior element nodes. Side nodes positioned at the same relative distance from corner nodes in both local and global space, and interior nodes positioned such that they do not affect the Jacobian of the co-ordinate transformation, provide improved accuracy over nodes positioned locally without regard for the global configuration. This concept is demonstrated in the context of two-dimensional quadratic quadrilateral isoparametrics, but is also applicable to higher orders and dimensions. In the test cases examined, the new formulation provides a reduction in error of up to three orders of magnitude and also provides accurate solutions for nodal placements which are not allowed using the standard transformations.

    Notes: This paper attempts to answer two commonly raised questions during the preparation of a finite element mesh, for the linear elastic fracture analysis of cracked structure: how to set up the finite element mesh around the crack tip, and what level of accuracy is to be expected from such a modelling.Two test problems, with known analytical expressions for their stress intensity factors, are analysed by the finite element method using the isoparametric quadratic singular element. The modified parameters were the order of integration, aspect ratio, number of elements surrounding the crack tip, use of transition elements, the singular element length over the total crack length, the symmetry of the mesh around the crack tip. Based on these analyses, a data base is created and various plots produced. The results are interpreted, the accuracy evaluated and recommendations drawn.Contrary to previous reports, it is found that the computed stress intensity factor (SIF) remains within engineering accuracy (10 per cent) throughout a large range of l/a (singular element length over crack length) for problems with a uniform non-singular stress distribution ahead of the crack tip (i.e. double edge notch), and l/a should be less than 0·1 for problems with a non-singular stress gradient (i.e three-point bend). Also, it is found that the best results are achieved by using at least four singular elements around the crack tip, with their internal angles around 45 degrees, and a reduced (2 × 2) numerical integration.

    Notes: This paper presents and analyses methods for design sensitivity analysis of static response for structural systems when general boundary conditions are used during the analysis phase. The design sensitivity analysis methods where the boundary conditions are used to reduce the equilibrium equation have been presented earlier. In such procedures, the reduced stiffness matrix is non-singular. This fact is used to show differentiability of the displacement vector. When reduction procedures are not used, the global structural stiffness matrix may be singular. In such a case, differentiability of the displacement vector may be questionable. However, it is shown that the displacement vector is still differentiable. Several forms of the structural design sensitivity equations are presented. Although these equations are derived with Lagrange multiplier treatment of general boundary conditions, it is shown that they are applicable with any treatment of general boundary conditions. For example, they can also be used with co-ordinate reduction schemes. Therefore, design sensitivity analysis can be carried out with any existing finite element analysis computer code. Moreover, the procedures presented can be used to calculate sensitivity of a force of constraint can that is desired. The formulations are kept quite general such that design dependent boundary conditions can be routinely treated. An example is used to illustrate the procedures.

    Notes: In this paper, an efficient, exact zooming technique is developed which employs static condensation and exact structural reanalysis methods. For a multiple level of zooming such that the successive level of zooming is contained within the prior levels of zoom, repeated application of static condensation will reduce the system to one that is associated only with the degrees-of-freedom (dof) of the original model. Then, application of an exact static reanalysis technique permits the displacements at the dof of the original model that are contained in the final zoomed portion of the structure to be obtained first. Next, the response external to the zoom, as well as the response of additional dof within various levels of zooming, can be computed. With the triangular factor of the stiffness matrix of the original system available, this approach involves only the solution of a system of equations of small order. The proposed method is demonstrated by a numerical example.

    Notes: A new method for the formulation of hybrid elements by the Hellinger-Reissner principle is established by expanding the essential terms of the assumed stresses as complete polynomials in the natural coordinates of the element. The equilibrium conditions are imposed in a variational sense through the internal displacements which are also expanded in the natural co-ordinates. The resulting element possesses all the ideal qualities, i.e. it is invariant, it is less sensitive to geometric distortion, it contains a minimum number of stress parameters and it provides accurate stress calculations. For the formulation of a 4-node plane stress element, a small perturbation method is used to determine the equilibrium constraint equations. The element has been proved to be always rank sufficient.

    Notes: The simulation of a large-scale gas transmission network involves the numerical solution of a large system of initial valued, stiff algebraic/differential equations. Rapid changes in the solution are present due to the disturbances generated by the varying consumer demand and the operation of network controlling devices such as compressors. This paper discusses the design of an efficient variable-step integrator for the solution of the problem. Two sets of strategies are presented for implementing the variable-step integrator; one for the implicit numerical method such as the diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta methods, and the other for the linearly implicit Rosenbrock-type method. The performance of the numerical methods implemented are compared with the British Gas simulation program PAN on a number of large, realistic transmission networks.

    Notes: A hybrid algorithm for reducing the bandwidth of symmetric matrices is described in terms of a finite element grid. The new algorithm produces significantly lower bandwidths than either the commonly-used Gibbs-Poole-Stockmeyer (GPS) or Cuthill-McKee (CM) algorithms, with run times comparable to the original CM algorithm. The new hybrid algorithm uses the GPS algorithm as a preprocessor to provide a good initial node numbering for the author's node-shuffling algorithm, which accounts for variable degrees-of-freedom per node (DOF/node). The hybrid algorithm was tested on the 30 benchmark problems that were compiled by Everstine, and on 10 supplemental problems with variable DOF/node. Bandwidths and CPU times are presented for all problems.

    Notes: This communication studies a procedure for stress intensity factor computations using traction singular quarter-point boundary elements. Opening mode stress intensity factors are computed from the tractions' nodal values at the crack tip. A comparison is made between the factors calculated using this procedure and those obtained by previously recommended methods which made use of the nodal values of the displacements. The proposed procedure was seen to be less discretization sensitive than any other of the considered methods. Accurate results were obtained even in the case of coarse meshes.

    Notes: This paper is concerned with the development of a numerical model which is based on the direct integral balance of internal energy over an a priori defined subdomain, associated with any nodal point, and on the piecewise temperature and geometrical interpolation inherent in the isoparametric finite element concept. This discretization procedure, also called the conservative finite element method (CFEM), ensures local and global energy conservation, in spite of discretization errors, and preserves the major feature of the finite element technique, i.e. the versatility of its algorithm.The CFEM equations are first developed and then some features of the CFEM matrices and solutions are compared with relevant features of the finite element method based on the Galerkin orthogonalization process (GFEM).To confirm better accuracy of the numerical procedure thus developed, four examples of a comparative nature, dealing with simple configurations, are solved.Furthermore, the stability and oscillation characteristics of the CFEM and GFEM solutions are established by means of the von Neumann approach, in order to show less stringent stability requirements for the CFEM model.
