Notes: New series of macrocyclic Schiff-base lanthanide(III), yttrium(III), and cadmium(II) complexes, [M(1)]Xn (X = NO3-, M = Y, Ln = La-Yb except Pm and Dy; X = ClO4-, M = Cd, La, Ce, Pr, Sm, Gd, or Er) and [M(3)]Xn (X = NO3-, M = Dy; X = ClO4-, M = Er and Cd), have been prepared by cyclocondensation of O1,O7-bis(2-formylphenyl)-1,4,7-trioxaheptane with O1,O7-bis(2-aninyl)-1,4,7-trioxaheptane (1) or tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (3) in the presence of the appropriate metal salt as a template agent. The Schiff-base macrocycles 1 and 3 are also formed in the absence of a metal ion. Treatment of 1 with NaBH4 in methanol gives the diamine macrocycle 2. The reactions of LnIII, CdII, and YIII ions with 2 have also been investigated. The crystal structures of the monoprotonated ligand 2 and of the complex [Cd(3)](ClO4)2 have been determined by X-ray diffraction analysis.Supporting information for this article is available on the WWW under -//_/_http://www.wiley-vch.de/contents/jc_2005/2000/99352_s.pdf or from the author.

Notes: The pseudo-octahedral complexes [Mo(η3-allyl)Br(CO)2(PPynPh3-n-P,N)] (Py = 2-pyridyl; n = 2, 3) and [Mo(η3-allyl)Br(CO)2(OPPymPh3-m-O,N)] (m = 1, 2, 3) undergo three different dynamic processes in solution, depending on the chelating ligand. The complexes containing PPhPy2 and PPy3 as chelating P,N-donors undergo a novel “pivoted double switch” mechanism which scrambles two equatorial coordination sites with racemization, while maintaining the identity of the phosphorus atom trans to the allyl ligand. The complexes containing 2-pyridylphosphane oxides as chelating O,N-donors undergo a nondissociative intramolecular trigonal-twist (or turnstile) rearrangement which maintains the identity of the phosphane oxide oxygen atom coordinated in an equatorial position. All the complexes containing uncoordinated pyridyls undergo a slow dissociative exchange of pyridyls without coordination site scrambling. The structure of the complex [Mo(η3-allyl)Br(CO)2(OPPy3-O,N)] has been determined by X-ray diffraction.Supporting information for this article is available on the WWW under -//_/_http://www.wiley-vch.de/contents/jc_2005/2000/99363_s.pdf or from the author.

Notes: The reaction of 4′-functionalized 6′-phenyl-2,2′-bipyridine ligands (L-n) with the dimer [(ppy)2IrCl]2 (ppy = 2-phenylpyridine anion) and subsequent counterion exchange affords a new series of cationic orthometallated iridium(III) complexes, [(ppy)2Ir(L-n)][PF6] (1-5), which have been characterized by spectroscopic methods. These complexes have a large shape anisotropy and significant amphiphilic character. The crystal structure of 4 has been determined by X-ray diffraction.

Notes: Two new 1,2,3,5-dithiadiazoles, [4-(4′-C5H4N)CN2S2] (L1) and [4-(3′-C5H4N)CN2S2] (L2), with different pyridyl groups at the 4-position were prepared. As Lewis bases, the dithiadiazoles reacted with Lewis acids via their pyridyl groups to form acid-base adducts with retention of the five-membered dithiadiazole ring. Ligands L1 and L2 reacted with excess triethylborane to give L1BEt3 and L2BEt3 (1a and 1b) and with Mn(CO)5Br to give the fac-Mn(CO)3Br(L1)2 (2a) and fac-Mn(CO)3Br(L2)2 (2b) complexes. When reacted with Pd0 complexes, namely, Pd(PPh3)4 and a mixture of [Pd2(dba)3] and dppf, the dithiadiazoles underwent ring-opening reaction by reductive cleavage of the S-S bond of the dithiadiazole ring. The resulting formation of Pd-S bonds gave the corresponding trinuclear complexes [Pd3{μ-SNC(4′-C5H4N)NS-S,S′}2(PPh3)4] (3a), [Pd3{μ-SNC(3′-C5H4N)NS-S,S′}2(PPh3)4] (3b), and [Pd3{μ-SNC(4′-C5H4N)NS-S,S′}2(dppf)2] (4) [dba = dibenzylideneacetone, dppf = 1,1′-bis(diphenylphosphanyl)ferrocene]. Complexes 3a and 3b reacted with excess triethylborane to give the corresponding acid-base adducts [Pd3{μ-SNC(4′-C5H4NBEt3)NS-S,S′}2(PPh3)4] (5a) and [Pd3{μ-SNC(3′-C5H4NBEt3)NS-S,S′}2(PPh3)4] (5b.) Complex 3a reacted with Mn(CO)5Br to give {[Pd3{μ-SNC(4′-C5H4N)NS-S,S′}2(PPh3)4][MnBr(CO)3]}n (6). The structures of 3a, 5a, and 5b were established by X-ray crystallography.

Notes: Reaction of [Yb(OAr)2(THF)3] (OAr = OC6H2-2,6-tBu2-4-R; R = H, Me, tBu) with perfluorodecalin in THF at room temperature results in C-F activation and formation of the first heteroleptic aryloxofluorolanthanoid complexes, [Yb(OAr)2F(THF)]2. Oxidation of bis(cyclopentadienyl)ytterbium(II) with perfluoro(methylcyclohexane) or perfluorodecalin in DME surprisingly gives unsolvated [YbCp2F]3. The analogous reaction of bis(methylcyclopentadienyl)ytterbium(II) yields unsolvated [Yb(MeCp)2F]4, whilst in THF, the oxidation provides [Yb(MeCp)2F(THF)]2. Treatment of [YbCp2F(THF)]2 with triphenylphosphane oxide gives [YbCp2F(OPPh3)]2. X-ray structure determinations revealed [Yb(OAr)2F(THF)]2 (R = H or tBu) to be centrosymmetric fluoride-bridged dimers with five-coordination for ytterbium. Examination of the structures of the cyclopentadienyl complexes showed that [YbCp2F]3 is trimeric with formal eight-coordination for ytterbium and a planar (YbF)3 ring, whereas [Yb(MeCp)2F]4 is an eight-coordinate tetramer having a puckered (YbF)4 ring with F-Yb-F angles of ca. 90° and Yb-F-Yb angles close to 180° [178.9(4), 168.4(3)°]. Both [Yb(MeCp)2F(THF)]2 and [YbCp2F(OPPh3)]2 are nine-coordinate fluoride-bridged dimers.

Notes: The reaction of oxalic amidines R1-N=C(NHR2)-C(NHR2)=N-R1 with CH3MgX followed by uptake of CO2 results in the formation of the trimeric carbamato complexes [R1-N=C(NR2-COO)-C(NR2COO)=N-R1]3Mg3(THF)6 (2a: R1 = R2 = Ph; 2b: R1 = R2 = p-tolyl) as the thermodynamically stable final products of the reaction. Their X-ray crystal structures show that the three metal centres are in a linear arrangement. The central magnesium ion is octahedrally surrounded by six O-donor atoms of the μ2-carbamato bridges, while both peripheral magnesium ions are facially coordinated by three O-donor atoms of the carbamato groups and three THF molecules. This coordination sphere can be considered as a structural model for the active centre in the ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase enzyme. Compound 2a reacts with ZnCl2 or CoBr2, with CO2 elimination, to form dimeric complexes of the type [X2M(oxalamidinato)MX2][Mg(DMF)6] (M = Zn, Co; X = Cl, Br). X-ray crystal structure analyses show that the d-metals are tetrahedrally coordinated. The magnesium-bromide-containing intermediates in the formation of 2a and 2b are able to transfer CO2 to acetophenone, thus simulating the CO2 activation step in enzymatic biotin-dependent carboxylation reactions.

Notes: The structures of several complexes arising from the interaction between methylene and palladium and rhodium diformates were optimized through density functional calculations. For palladium, mono-, di-, and trimeric complexes were considered. The results obtained show that in all cases the most stable structures correspond to complexes in which methylene has inserted in one of the M-O bonds, while metal-carbene complexes are energy minima only for monomeric palladium diformate and for rhodium diformate. Trimeric palladium formate is thermodynamically stable upon fragmentation. However, when it reacts with methylene, fragmentation becomes favorable. The role of the resulting monomeric complex in the olefin cyclopropanation mechanism catalyzed by palladium dicarboxylates is discussed.

Notes: The synthesis and characterization of manganese complexes of β-octafluoro-meso-tetraarylporphyrins are reported. The presence of the electron-withdrawing β-fluorine atoms induces a very large shift of the redox potential for the oxidation of the manganese(II) derivatives. With the meso-aryl group bearing two ortho-chlorine atoms (2,6-dichlorophenyl) or five fluorine atoms (pentafluorophenyl), metal complexation leads to the isolation of pure manganese(II) compounds. The stability and catalytic activity of these new derivatives have been studied using hydrogen peroxide and iodosylbenzene as oxidants, and standard substrates for epoxidation and hydroxylation reactions. The results are compared to those obtained with the β-hydrogenated analogs under the same conditions. In the case of hydrogen peroxide, the high level of porphyrin degradation prevents efficient catalytic activity. With iodosylbenzene as oxidant, both stability and epoxidation are similar to those of the β-hydrogenated porphyrins, however, a substantial improvement in the efficiency of the hydroxylation of cyclohexane is observed with up to 33 turnovers with (perfluorotetraphenylporphyrin)manganese(II).

Notes: Seven-coordinated molybdenum oxobisperoxo complexes with chelate nitrogen donors like pyrazolylpyridines are catalysts for the epoxidation of olefins. An NMR spectroscopic and quantumchemical study on the fluxionality of the chelate ligand proves that during this process partial ligand dissociation takes place. This gave rise to a detailed theoretical study on the activation of CH3OOH at the model complex (NH3)2MoO(O2)2 including dissociation of one of the ammonia ligands and proton transfer from the hydroperoxide to one of the peroxo ligands.Supporting information for this article is available on the WWW under -//_/_http://www.wiley-vch.de/contents/jc_2005/2000/99429_s.pdf or from the author.

Notes: In the search for ruthenium complexes with sulfur-dominated coordination spheres that bind, activate, or stabilize nitrogenase relevant molecules, complexes containing the new and robust tetradentate ligand ‘tpS4’-H2 were synthesized. Treatment of [RuCl2(PPh3)3] with ‘tpS4’2- gives [Ru(PPh3)2(‘tpS4’)] (1), which contains two labile PPh3 ligands. The reaction of 1 with PEt3 or DMSO led to substitution of both PPh3 ligands, yielding [Ru(PEt3)2(‘tpS4’)] (2) and [Ru(DMSO)2(‘tpS4’)] (3), respectively. When treated with nitrogenous ligands, complex 1 lost only one PPh3 ligand to yield [Ru(L)(PPh3)(‘tpS4’)] complexes where L = py (7), NH3 (8), N2H4 (9), NH2NHMe (10), and CH3CN (12), all of which are labile. The labile acetonitrile complex [Ru(CH3CN)(PPh3)(‘tpS4’)] (12) proved to be particularly suited as a precursor for the syntheses of other [Ru(L)(PPh3)(‘tpS4’)] complexes. The 18 and 19 valence electron NO complexes [Ru(NO)(PPh3)(‘tpS4’)]BF4 (13) and [Ru(NO)(PPh3)(‘tpS4’)] (14), (NEt4)[Ru(N3)(PPh3)(‘tpS4’)] (15), [Ru(I)(PPh3)(‘tpS4’)] (16), and [Ru(N3)(PPh3)(‘tpS4’)] (17) were obtained starting from complex 12. The labile mononuclear hydrazine complex [Ru(N2H4)(PPh3)(‘tpS4’)] (9) gave the dinuclear complex [μ-N2H4{Ru(PPh3)(‘tpS4’)}2] (18) by dissociation of hydrazine. The dinuclear diazene complex [μ-N2H2{Ru(PPh3)(‘tpS4’)}2] (19) was obtained by oxidation of 9 and more readily from [Ru(CH3CN)(PPh3)(‘tpS4’)] (12) and N2H2, which was generated in situ from K2N2(CO2)2 and acetic acid. The molecular structures of 7, 13, 16, 18, and 19 were determined by X-ray structure analyses. The complexes 18 and 19 represent the first complexes containing the hydrazine/diazene couple, which enables us to compare both the bonding features and the formation of N-H···S bridges when hydrazine and diazene bind to transition metal sulfur sites.

Notes: ---A simple and efficient thiocyano- or isothiocyano-phenylselenenylation of alkenes has been developed. The reactions occur when alkenes are treated with [bis(acetoxy)iodo]benzene, trimethylsilyl isothiocyanate or potassium thiocyanate and diphenyl diselenide. Mono- and disubstituted alkenes led to the formation of 1,2-phenylseleno-thiocyanates, whereas both more-substituted alkenes and styrenes gave exclusively 1,2-phenylseleno-isothiocyanates. The overall transformation represents the addition of PhSeSCN to the olefinic double bonds, in situ generated by the above reagents combination.

Notes: ---1-Bromocyclohexa-1,4-diene (3) was prepared from trans-4,5-dibromocyclohexene by elimination of hydrogen bromide. Treatment of a solution of 3 in furan or 2,5-dimethylfuran with KOtBu afforded the tetrahydroepoxynaphthalenes 4 and 5, respectively. The structure of these products is evidence for the title cycloallene (isobenzene 1) being the reactive intermediate. The compounds 4 and 5 were dehydrogenated by DDQ to the known dihydroepoxynaphthalenes 6 and 7, respectively. These conversions unambiguously confirm the structures of 4 and 5. In pure styrene, 3 was not attacked by KOtBu, and only upon the addition of 18-crown-6 did a reaction occur. This reaction did not, however, furnish the known [2+2] cycloadduct 9 of styrene and 1, but, instead, a small amount of 1,2-diphenylethane (8) was formed. In agreement with this finding, the conjecture that 1 was deprotonated to give the phenyl anion was confirmed by the treatment of a solution of 3 and benzophenone in THF with KOtBu, which resulted in the formation of triphenylmethanol.

Notes: ---The biosynthesis of the gabosines A-C (3-5) was studied by feeding cultures of Streptomyces cellulosae subsp. griseorubiginosus (strain S 1096) with 13C-labeled precursors. Although the carba sugars are structurally related to shikimic acid, the biosynthetic origin was found to be different to the shikimate pathway. The results revealed that the gabosines are formed via a pentose phosphate pathway by cyclization of a heptulose phosphate intermediate. This intermediate arises from a triose phosphate by successive transfer of two C2 fragments by transketolases. This pathway is identical as that described for valienamine (7), the aminocarba sugar moiety of validamycin, and acarbose (2). The results from biosynthetic studies are discussed on the background of the variety of gabosines found in nature.

Notes: ---The total syntheses of the Annonaceous acetogenins squamocin A and squamocin D have been achieved. The synthesis follows a modular strategy, wherein a left-side chain, the central bis-THF core and the right-side chain are assembled together. Key reactions are additions of organomagnesium compounds to bi-THF aldehydes. At the end of the synthesis the butenolide moiety was introduced. This modular synthetic approach should be useful for the synthesis of other related natural products as well as pharmacologically interesting analogs.

Notes: ---Cation-anion interactions in 2-propanol solutions of sodium salts NaY (Y = MeS, iPrS, tBuS, iPrO, SCN, ClO4, Ph4B) have been studied by 23Na-NMR spectroscopy. The analysis involved measurements of chemical shift and T1 as a function of salt concentration in both the absence and presence of the Na+-complexing agent 18-crown-6. The results indicate that the interactions of Na+ with alkoxides and thiol anions are very different from those with charge-delocalized anions (SCN-, ClO4-, Ph4B-), and that the degree of association in NaSR salts is greater for R = tBu than for R = Me.

Notes: ---One of the main problems of the Heck reaction using acyclic substrates which lead to Pd intermediates with β- and β′-hydrogens is the lack of selectivity in the formation of the double bond as the last step of the catalytic cycle. The use of allylsilanes as the alkene moiety permits control of the elimination step. Thus, the Pd0-catalysed reaction of 1a-c and 2 leads exclusively to the corresponding bicyclic compounds 11a-c. In contrast, reaction of 7 yields a mixture of 12a, (E)-12b and (Z)-12b.

Notes: ---Reactions of the [(1-alkynyl)carbene]tungsten complex (CO)5W=C(OEt)C≡CPh (1) with 1-aminocyclohexenes 2a-c and 7a-c afford different types of products depending on the amino substituents and the reaction conditions. (4-Aminocyclobutenyl)carbene complexes B have been shown to be generated in the first reaction step through a [2+2] cycloaddition. These are key intermediates and afford cross-conjugated tungstatrienes E, (conjugated) 1-tungsta-1,3,5-hexatrienes G, or (non-conjugated) 1-tungsta-1,3,6-heptatrienes F by following competing reaction pathways. Cross-conjugated 1-tungstatrienes 3 have been isolated in 52-74% yield by performing the reactions of 1-aminobenzocyclohexenes 2a-c with compound 1 in pentane. In dichloromethane instead of pentane, (conjugated) 1-tungsta-1,3,5-hexatrienes 4 are obtained, which subse-quently undergo fragmentation to give cyclopentadienes 6 (by π-cyclization) and dihydropyrroles (by α-cyclization) in a molar ratio dependent on the nature of the amino substituents. (Non-conjugated) 1-tungsta-1,3,6-heptatrienes 10 are generated upon reaction of 1-aminocyclohexenes 7a-c with compounds 1, which are transformed into cyclopentadienes 12 via conjugated 1-tungsta-1,3,5-hexatrienes 9 as intermediates. Reactions of 1-tungsta-1,3,6-heptatrienes 10 with the (1-alkynyl)carbene complex 1 afford dinuclear compounds 14, which subsequently yield indenes 15 (by two successive π-cyclization steps) and spiro-tetrahydropyrroles 16 (by both a π-cyclization and an α-cyclization step), depending on the steric bulk of the amino substituent.

Notes: ---The synthesis of four enantiopure hydroxyamidines is described. One amidine was obtained from (S)-pyroglutamic acid. Its key step involved the addition of phenylmagnesium bromide to the corresponding ester, affording the tertiary alcohol without detectable racemization. The second amidine was obtained by coupling of an (S)-malic acid derived N-acyliminium ion with β-naphthol. The other amidines were obtained from an (S)-serine-derived imide which was reduced to two diastereomeric lactams that were eventually transformed into the corresponding amidines.

NMR spectroscopy shows the complex formation with H2PO4- and Cl -. Cleft-like receptors bind H2PO4- in a 2:1 guest-host stoichiometry (Ka = 107M-2) in DMSO, whereas Cl - is bound in a 1:1 stoichiometry (Ka = 103M-1). The macrocyclic receptors form a 1:1 complex with H2PO4- (Ka = 103M-1 in DMSO) with a 100-fold selectivity for H2PO4- over Cl -.

Notes: ---The applications of arene-catalyzed lithiation reactions during recent years are reviewed. This methodology has been used to obtain functionalized organolithium compounds from halogenated as well as nonhalogenated materials, such as heterocycles, sulfones, triflates, ethers, thioethers, amides, and esters. This arene-catalyzed lithiation has also been used in the preparation of polylithiated intermediates. Sub-stoichiometric amounts of the arene may be supported on a polymeric material, its catalytic activity being as efficient as in the solution version.

Notes: ---On irradiation at λ ≥ 270 nm solutions of 4-aryl-1,4-dihydropyridines 1 yield cage dimers 2 as the main products beside small amounts of anti dimers 3. 1H-NMR data and X-ray crystal structure prove centrosymmetrical properties for both dimers with axially orientated 4-aryl substituents. Irradiation with filtered light (λ 〉 313 nm) leads to syn and anti dimers 4 and 3 in nearly equal yields. The poor yields of anti dimers 3 on irradiation with unfiltered light are demonstrated to result from a partial cleavage back to their monomeric starting materials 1.

Notes: ---While geminally disubstituted α-amino acids are helix-inducing residues in α-peptides, gem-disubstituted β-amino acids are predicted not to fit into any of the three major secondary structures of β-peptides recognized to date [the 314 helix, the 12/10/12 helix, and the pleated sheet (Figure 1)]. In order to be able to synthesize and structurally identify β-peptides containing such building blocks, or consisting entirely of them, and in order to establish the chirality of secondary structures they may form, achiral and chiral gem-disubstituted β-amino acids must be readily available. The methods of preparation of 3-amino carboxylic acids with two carbon substituents at the 2- or 3-position (β2,2-/β3,3-amino acids, Figure 2) are reviewed. While there are numerous essentially classical routes to achiral and rac-β-amino acids of this type (Schemes 1-4), their EPC synthesis is currently the subject of investigations. These include the nucleophilic addition to (R)- or (S)-N-sulfinimines (Schemes 6-10) and other Mannich-type transformations (Schemes 19-22), stereoselective alkylations of various chiral hydropyrimidines (Schemes 11, 12, 18), of esters or amides of 2-cyano-alkanoic acids (Schemes 13, 14, 16), and of Li2 derivatives of non-racemic N-protected 3-amino-alkanoates (Scheme 17), as well as sequences of reactions involving enantiopure gem-disubstituted succinic acid derivatives and a Curtius degradation (Schemes 23-26). Oligomers of the achiral gem-disubstituted compounds 1-(aminomethyl)-cyclopropane and -cyclohexane carboxylic acid have already been shown to form 8- and 10-membered hydrogen-bonded rings, respectively (Figure 5), which provide novel motifs for the possible construction of turns, links, or steps in β-peptidic chains.

Notes: ---A short enzymatic route for the synthesis of L-fucose analogs modified at the nonpolar terminus is reported. In particular, fucose derivatives bearing extended linear (1b) and branched (1e) saturated, or various unsaturated (1c, 1d) aliphatic chains have been prepared, in order to increase hydrophobic contacts. The rather general approach involves a sequential application of the recombinant enzymes L-fuculose 1-phosphate aldolase (FucA) and L-fucose ketol isomerase (FucI) from E.coli. Enantiomerically pure L-fucose analogs have been prepared in up to 30% overall yield starting from the appropriate hydroxyaldehyde precursors and dihydroxyacetone phosphate as readily available components. Unsaturated 2-hydroxyaldehydes have been efficiently prepared by alk(en/yn)yl Grignard addition to cinnamaldehyde followed by controlled ozonolysis of the styrene fragment.

Notes: ---The synthesis and complete characterization of dendritic hexakisadducts 8-13 of C60 with a mixed (1:5, 2:4, 3:3 and 4:2) Th symmetrical addition pattern is described. Pentakis-, tetrakis-, tris- and bisadducts 4-7 of C60 with diethyl malonate addends arranged in an incomplete octahedral addition pattern served as core building blocks. Completion of the pseudo-octahedral architecture was achieved by exhaustive cyclopropanation with first- to third-generation bromomalonate dendra 1-3 consisting of the corresponding Fréchet-type 3,5-dihydroxybenzyl alcohol subunits. This concept allows for the convergent synthesis of globular dendrimers with a variable number of dendritic malonates (1-4) and a high dendron density in good yields. The 1H and 13C NMR spectra reflect the Th symmetrical addition pattern of the products and reveal spatial interactions of inner dendron branches.

Notes: ---The substituted 6-hydroxy-trans-3-hexenoic acids 2-4 have been prepared by a template coupling reaction between (butadiene)zirconocene, W(CO)6, and cyclobutanone, cyclodecanone, or cyclododecanone, respectively, followed by hydrolytic/oxidative demetallation of the resulting metallacyclic zirconoxycarbene tungsten complexes. The hydroxyalkenoic acids 2-4 have been found to form two novel fundamental types of associated supramolecular structural arrays in the solid state through intermolecular hydrogen bonding, which have been characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. The cyclobutanone-derived compound 2 exhibits an infinitely extending sheet-like structure, which is composed of symmetrically alternating interconnected 12- and 36-membered rings, each being constructed from the functional groups or frameworks of four individual molecules of 2. In contrast, the cyclodecanone-derived compound 3 adopts a ribbon-type structure composed of C2-symmetrically arranged symmetry-equivalent 15-membered rings, each containing the functionalities from three individual molecules of 2. On the basis of scanning force microscopy studies, the cyclododecanone-derived compound 4 would appear to have a similar structure in the solid state. The structural features of the molecular assemblies that are formed by intermolecular hydrogen bonding of compounds 2-4 in the solid state are selectively controlled by the size and favoured conformations of the spiro-anellated carbocyclic rings at C6 of the 6-hydroxy-trans-3-hexenoic acid carbon chain.

Notes: ---A dynamic process has been detected in the solution 13C-NMR spectra oftBu-Si(iPr)3 (4) in the temperature range -145 °C to -163 °C, the corresponding free energy of activation being 5.5 kcal mol-1. Molecular mechanics calculations have identified three types of conformations that are markedly more stable than all the others, but the one with the highest symmetry cannot be populated, as is evident from the appearance of the spectrum at low temperature. This spectrum can be interpreted in terms of restricted rotation of the tert-butyl group and of the isopropyl groups, leading to a structure centered around the (a,g,-g) conformation. In the case of the analogous (iPr)3SiCl derivative (5), this dynamic process was not observed in solution, but an appropriate spectrum for the same (a,g,-g) conformation was obtained by the solid-state CP-MAS NMR spectroscopy at -100 °C.

Notes: ---A reinvestigation of the reaction between 2,3-diphenyl-2H-azirine (1) and phenyldiazomethane (2) has shown that a literature report has to be corrected since no vinyl azide 4 but rather the allylic compound 3-azido-1,2,3-triphenyl-1-propene (3) is produced. This stable substance, which can also be prepared by substitution reactions of allylic bromide (E)-10 or from alcohol (E)-11, may be separated into its geometrical isomers (E)-3 and (Z)-3, although these equilibrate through rapid [3,3] sigmatropic migration of the azido group. Attempts to synthesize 4 by dehydration of azido alcohols 7 using methanesulfonyl chloride and sulfur dioxide or by elimination of hydrogen chloride from azides 15 led only to 3 and 2-benzyl-2,3-diphenyl-2H-azirine (14). This heterocycle, which can also be prepared by Neber rearrangement, has been found to be the thermal and photochemical decomposition product of the unstable vinyl azides 4. However, dehydrations of 7 using thionyl chloride at low temperature have led to the first isolation of 1-azido-1,2,3-triphenyl-1-propenes (4). Starting with 3 and various other allylic azides, rearrangement reactions involving sigmatropic shift of the azido group or photochemical cis-trans isomerization have been investigated, as have base-catalyzed (prototropic) rearrangements to give vinyl azides.

Notes: ---The addition reaction between the P-H bond of tetraoxyspirophosphoranes 1-2 and long-chain imines 3a-h (decyl, dodecyl, tetradecyl, hexadecyl, octadecyl, and oleyl imines) occurs instantaneously at room temperature. It is diastereoselective, and quantitatively leads to the corresponding (α-aminoalkyl)spirophosphoranes 4a-h and 5e. The influence of the pentacoordinated phosphorus atom on the stereoselectivity of the Pudovik reaction might be attributed to the involvement of the rigid spirophosphoranide (PV) intermediate in the addition reaction. Selective and one-pot hydrolysis of these P-C bond spirophosphoranes readily proceeds either at room temperature in the presence of moist solvents to give the corresponding carboxyalkyl (α-aminoalkyl)phosphonic acid monoesters 6a-h and 7e, or the reaction may be carried out in the presence of 20% aqueous hydrochloric acid under reflux, to afford the free (α-aminoalkyl)phosphonic acid amphiphiles 8a-h in high yields. In contrast to their sodium salts, these single- and double-chained free and monoester phosphonic acid amphiphiles exist as zwitterions and are not soluble in water.

Notes: ---A potassium selective fluorescent chemosensor, 2, was designed and synthesized. The molecular sensor is weakly luminescent in acetonitrile solution, but exhibits a significant increase in intensity upon addition of K+. The luminescence intensity increases reach a plateau when the K+/2 ratio is 3:2. The sensor shows a linear fluorescent enhancement with the concentration of potassium ion in the presence of a large excess of sodium ion.

Notes: ---Two generally applicable routes for the synthesis of chiral amino alcohols embodying the bispidine framework have been developed. In linear route A the bispidine framework is built up successively from chiral primary amines via intermediate formation of a piperidinone and a bispidinone. In convergent route B an achiral bispidine is formed first and then the N-substituents are introduced by reaction of the nitrogen bases with chiral electrophiles. In order to determine if the bispidine core and its N-substituents can influence the steric course of enantioselective transformations, bispidine amino alcohols built up by these two routes were investigated as chiral ligands in the enantioselectively catalyzed addition of diethylzinc to aldehydes and chalcone. In general, tridentate ligands containing one chiral amino alcohol fragment and a second amino substituent without a stereogenic center were more efficient than tetradentate ligands with two amino alcohol structural units. With the best ligands the enantioselective addition of diethylzinc to aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes proceeded with 83-98% ee and the nickel-catalyzed addition of diethylzinc to chalcone was achieved with up to 85% ee.

Notes: ---Incorporation of N,N′-diphenylhydrazine into HZSM-5 led to the formation of azobenzene and aniline (70-80 mol-% mass balance). The formation of azobenzene can be followed by the appearance in diffuse reflectance UV/Vis spectroscopy of a characteristic band (λmax = 420 nm). IR spectra of the extracted solids indicate that some aniline is retained in the zeolite, probably due to acid-base interaction with active sites. The products are rationalized by two competing mechanisms: the formation of azobenzene by electron transfer to an oxidizing site, the generation of aniline by proton transfer from a Brønsted acid site. A long-wavelength diffuse-reflectance band (λmax = 800 nm) in the initial stages of the reaction supports the intermediacy of a radical cation. These results show that acid zeolites can exhibit a dual behavior against basic substrates with low oxidation potential, serving simultaneously as electron acceptor and Brønsted acid.

Notes: ---[3]Catenanes of the amide type were synthesized preparatively for the first time. Large macrocycles bearing two guest-binding sites were used to synthesize these amide-linked [3]catenanes in yields of 4%, either by formation of rigid macrocyclic boxes, or with macrocycles consisting of flexible long-chained aliphatic diamines. Furthermore, the systematic introduction of 1,ω-alkane diamines as building blocks for catenanes is described. The synthesis of a series of [2]catenanes by varying the ring size of one of the two macrocycles was also achieved in yields of 10%.

Notes: ---2-Alkyl-1-methylquinolinium hexafluorophosphates 1 are deprotonated by sodium or potassium hydride to afford solutions of 2-alkylidenedihydroquinolines 2, which are investigated by NMR spectroscopy. 1,3-Dipolar cycloaddition of phenyl azide to 2 yields the spirocyclic products 10. While, at 80-110 °C, the [3 + 2] cycloaddition that afforded (u)-10f is reversible and accompanied by epimerisation to give (l)-10f, thermolysis of the dimethyl compounds 10b and d affords the ring-expanded products 14b and d, respectively, in good yields along with molecular nitrogen. Irradiation of 10d with light of λ 〉 320 nm results in the formation of similar amounts of 14d and [3 + 2] cycloreversion products, viz. 2-diazopropane (5b) and the N-phenylimine 15d. - Trapping of 2 by methanesulphonyl azide (18a) gives mixtures of the products of ring expansion (21b, d-f, 10-50 %) and [3 + 2] cycloreversion (22a, d, 10-80 %) of the apparently very labile intermediate spirocyclic cycloadducts 19. The ratio of 21 vs. 22 is significantly improved when 18a is replaced by trifluoromethanesulphonyl azide (18b), which affords the iminodihydrobenzazepines 21i-k in 50-75 % yield. The structures of the products are based on NMR evidence and X-ray diffraction analyses performed with 21b, d, and (ax,E)-21e.

Notes: ---Rigid N=N/N=N (diazene/diazene) systems (F) consisting of more or less alkylated DBH and DBO chromophoric units (1, 2, X-ray structures), with very short π,π distances [d = 2.849 (1a, av.), 2.822 Å (2)] and almost perfect syn-periplanar π,π alignments [ω = 168.6 (1a), 174.2° (2)] as well as the more flexible, less “proximate” metathesis isomers (3a,c, 27a,c, d 〉4.6 Å, ω = 90-100°) have been synthesized. Homoconjugate π,π interaction (in 1, 2, not in 3, 27) is deduced from UV spectroscopic measurements [π → π* maxima at 239 (234) nm (sh, 260)], while PE analyses furnished only small interaction parameters (1a: 〈0.3 eV). The potential of the novel syn-periplanar N=N/N=N motif in 1 and 2 for the synthesis of somewhat exotic polyheterocycles has been explored by calculation (B3LYP) as well as experimentally: i.a. kinetically stabilized, all-cis-peralkylated tetrazolidines (38, 44) and perhydro-1,2,4,5-tetrazines (41, 47) have become accessible (i.a. via novel azomethine/diazene and azomethine/azomethine cycloadditions). In 1a with its unreactive DBO chromophoric subunits, in the “buttressed” derivatives 1b-d, as well as in the DBH/DBO combination 2, and likewise in more ‘distant’ 27 (differently from the analogous C=C/C=C and N=N/C=C systems), irrespective of the excitation conditions employed (light of λ ≥≥ 280, 254 nm, low temperature matrix irradiation, acetone sensitization) no [2+2]photocycloaddition was observed. Instead exclusively N2-elimination took place. It is argued that unproductive N=N/N=N photocycloaddition would have become observable through metathesis isomerization of the respective tetrazetidines.

Notes: ---The chances for intramolecular imine/ene (→ azetidines), diazene/ene (→ 1,2-diazetidines), diazeneoxy/ene (→ 1,2-diazetidine oxides) and diazenedioxiene (→ 1,2-diazetidine dioxides) [2+2]photocycloadditions and for the isolation of the respective photoproducts, have been probed with specifically designed substrates. Upon direct or sensitized excitation, [2+2]cycloaddition was found to be the exclusive or at least dominant chemical process for the C=N/C=C, N=N/C=C and ON=N(O)/C=C systems featuring very small π,π-distances of 2.8-3.0 Å and large π,π-interorbital angles of 160-170° (7 → 51, 17 → 55, 33 → 58 (competing N2 elimination), 22 → 62). This is not the case, however, in ON=NO/C=C (23, where electron transfer is a possibility), or in the more flexible, less “proximate” C=N/C=N (57) and C=NO/C=N (63) systems (π,π-distances of 〉3.8 Å). While the corseted 1,2-diazetidine photoadducts (55, 58) proved to be thermally stable, their N-oxides (62, 65) were thermally too labile to be directly observable above -65 °C. For the latter's only fleeting existence, electronic rather than strain effects are held responsible (B3LYP/6-31G* calculations). Very facile C=NO/C=C (12 → 13) and N=NO/C=C (22 → 24) [3+2]cycloadditions, homoconjugate addition of H2 and of dienophiles ([2+2+2]) to the diazene/ene 17 (→ 39, 41, 45) are manifestations of “proximity” in these bichromophoric skeletons.

Notes: ---The all-E isomer of (4,4′-13C2)astaxanthin (1a) has been prepared by total synthesis starting from commercially available 99% 13C enriched acetonitrile. The labelled astaxanthin was obtained in high purity and with high isotope incorporation. For this synthesis, the C15 + C10 + C15 strategy was used. The central C10-synthon, 2,7-dimethylocta-2,4,6-triene-1,8-dial (3), was coupled with 13C-enriched C15-phosphonium salt 2a. The new synthetic scheme for the preparation of the C15-phosphonium salt is discussed in this paper; the same scheme can be used to label all positions and combinations of positions of the C15-phosphonium salt.

Notes: ---Resorcinarene octamethyl ethers, bearing carboalkyloxy groups in the side chains, have been shown to interact with FeIII in organic media. 1H-NMR studies, carried out using GaIII instead of FeIII, suggest that these systems have two active sites of interaction, the first located at the aromatic moiet and the other in the vicinity of the carbonyl groups. As a confirmation of this, resorcinarenes without carbonyl groups in the side chains have been found to exhibit only one active site. Notably, in the latter case the interaction results in configurational changes.

Notes: ---Allylic polyenyl diphosphates such as geranyl and (E,E,E)-geranylgeranyl diphosphates are ubiquitous substrates for monoterpene and diterpene synthases and transferases in isoprenoid biosynthesis. These enzyme substrates were prepared in asymmetrically labeled form by reduction of 1-deuterio aldehyde precursors with (R)- and (S)-Alpine boranes®, conversion into diethyl phosphates, and SN2 displacements with tris(tetrabutylammonium) pyrophosphate which occurred slowly with essentially complete inversion of configuration over 2-5 days. The 8α- and 8β-hydroxy-17-nor analogs (13 and 14) of copalyl diphosphate as well as the (15R)-deuterium-labeled form of 13 were similarly prepared from nor-diols 11, (15S)-[15-2H1]-11, and 12 by means of regioselective phosphorylation of the allylic hydroxy groups and displacements with pyrophosphate anion. The configurations and enantiopurities of the deuterium-labeled geraniols, before and after the SN2 displacements, and the diastereopurity of the bicyclic keto alcohol intermediate (15S)-[15-2H1]-15 were determined by conversion into (1S)-camphanate esters and 1H-NMR analysis. Amino alcohol 18 was similarly converted into amino diphosphate 19, 15-aza-14,15-dihydro GGPP, a potential aza analog inhibitor for diterpene synthases which generate stereoisomeric forms of copalyl diphosphate.

Notes: The properties and reactivities of ketene, thioketene, and selenoketene were studied using the G2(MP2) level of theory. Calculated structures, vibrational frequencies, dipole moments, NMR chemical shifts, and charge distributions strongly suggest that thioketene and selenoketene are best represented by the neutral cumulenic form. Four prototype reactions were examined: ketene-ynol rearrangement, electrophilic and nucleophilic addition, and [2+2] cycloaddition. Thioketene and selenoketene were found to be more reactive than ketene in all reactions. In terms of chemistry, thioketene resembles selenoketene more than ketene. The variation of reactivity can readily be explained in terms of strain energy, electronegativity, and molecular orbital arguments.

Notes: ---In the course of our chemical screening program, the novel acyl α-L-rhamnopyranosides (1-6) were detected as metabolites from five different strains of Streptomycetes. The structures of all these compounds were elucidated by chemical and spectroscopic methods. The biosynthesis of 1 and 3 was established by feeding 13C-labelled acetate, glycerol, and D-glucose to Streptomyces griseoviridis (strain Tü 3634), and resulted in a complete labelling pattern of the 2,4-dimethyl-3-furanylcarbonyl and benzoyl residues, as well as the rhamnose moiety. These results reveal biosynthetic pathways of general importance and give an insight into the generation of the hexose phosphates, from which deoxysugars are formed. The acyl rhamnosides are members of a novel family of microbial metabolites and are considered as rhamnoconjugates from Streptomycetes.Supporting information for this article is available on the WWW under //http://www.wiley-vch.de/contents/jc_2046/2000/99413_s.pdf or from the author.

Notes: ---Allylindium reagents, prepared from excess allylic halide (Br or I) and indium metal, react with α,β-unsaturated ketones and aldehydes to give, after aerobic acidic workup, homoallyl-substituted vinylcyclopropanes. This process was explored and developed after a chance discovery arising from a side reaction in an attempted Pd-catalysed process. The structure of the cyclopropane arising from the reaction of bis(p-chlorobenzylidine)acetone was confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Whilst bis-α,β-unsaturated ketones give rise to a single homoallylcyclopropane species, α,β-unsaturated ketones and aldehydes give diastereomeric mixtures whose relative stereochemistry were assigned by NOE experiments. Crotylindium reagents react with good to perfect regioselectivity to afford tetrasubstituted cyclopropanes but prenylindium reagents fail to generate the analogous pentasubstituted rings.

Notes: ---Homoallyl-substituted vinyl cyclopropanes 1a-c, which are readily prepared by reaction of allylindium reagents with α,β-unsaturated ketones and aldehydes, undergo Ru-catalysed RCM reactions with Grubbs catalyst to give [4.1.0]bicyclooct-2-ene (norcarene) type bicyclic products. Noncyclisable ‘trans’ homoallyl-substituted vinyl cyclopropanes 1b and 1c are separated from their ‘cis’ diastereomers by RCM to 5b and 5c - but only with moderate efficiency due to a competing homo-cross metathesis (‘dimerisation’) to give 7b and 7c, respectively. However, the four diastereomers of the (homoallyl)distyrylcyclopropane 14a obtained from indium-mediated reaction of dibenzylideneacetone and crotyl bromide undergo remarkable kinetic diastereoselection in their RCM reactions to give a 4,7-dimethyl[4.1.0]bicyclohept-2-ene-type product 15a. This process allows recovery of a single diastereomer (〉 95%) of 14a without dimerisation being a significant side reaction. Furthermore, the RCM product 15a is obtained rich in one diastereomer (ca. 90%). The kinetic diastereoselection and lack of dimerisation can be rationalised by considering developing transannular interactions and a pseudo-A1,3 strain model.

Notes: ---The iodinatied carbamates 3 (E + Z), with potential β-blocking properties, were synthesized. The first route chosen, from 4-aminophenol and the chloroformate β7, had to be abandoned because of the formation of the oxazolidinone 10 during the epoxidation step. The aminoalcohol 17 prepared from the practolol 1 finally gave the target compounds by condensation with the iodoallylic chloroformates 8 (E + Z). The secondary Boc-protected amine function was regenerated without removing the carbamate function situated in the p-postion, by using mild reaction conditions (1 N HCl).

Notes: ---Silver salts which have a basic counter-ion are efficient catalysts for the regiospecific intramolecular addition of various acetylenic alcohols. Silver carbonate in aromatic solvent proved to be the best catalyst. Alkynols in which the two reacting parts of the molecule are relatively close together in space required only catalytic amounts of silver ion, while others cyclize readily with stoichiometric quantities. This heterocyclization reaction provides a mild and convenient access to 2-methylene-oxolanes or oxanes.

Notes: ---A synthesis of (23R)- and (23S)-23H-calysterols 2a and 2b from pregnanoic ester 10 is reported. Alkylation of 10 with dibromide 19b, followed by reduction of the carboethyloxy group to a methyl group, afforded (Z)-vinylic bromide 22. Dibromocyclopropanation of 22 yielded the diastereomeric tribromocyclopropane derivatives 15c and 15d. The corresponding 3-hydroxy-5-ene 17c was transformed into 2a via 25 and a cyclopropenyllithium intermediate. An alternative synthetic route involving vinylsilane 13 and (E)-vinylic bromide 14 has also been examined.

Notes: -D-Glucurono-3,6-lactone and L-cysteine combine in a highly stereoselective manner to give the 7,5-bicyclic thiazolidinlactam 2. The α-hydroxy group of the D-glucurono-3,6-lactone was exchanged for an amino function (to give 13) and, after condensation with L-cysteine methyl ester, the polyol dipeptide 7 was obtained. Peptide couplings proceed without the need to protect the three secondary hydroxy groups of the seven-membered ring. The amino group of 7 was deprotected and selectively elongated to the pseudo-tripeptide 16. The depsipeptide 17 was obtained by condensation of Boc-Ala-OH with the polyol 2. Elongation at the carboxy terminus yielded 19 and 20. The bicyclic scaffold populates a well-defined solution conformation; the hydroxy groups mimic the side chains of hydrophilic amino acids and can be further functionalized.

Notes: ---For comparison to the recently described 2,3,6,7-tetrakis(dimethylamino)naphthalene (1) the three isomers 2,3, and 4 were synthesized. The basicities of this group of isomers are strongly dependent upon the different mutual orientations of the pairs of dimethylamino substituents: only the isomers 3 and, partially, 4, both with dimethylamino groups in adjacent peri-positions of the naphthalene, are strong “proton sponges”. For the isomers 1 and 2 with the same number and kind of twofold dimethylamino substituents in neighbouring ortho-positions, however, no significant basicity increase is observed. To explain this difference between the two groups of isomers it is suggested that in the ortho-pairs of 1 and 2 the C-N bonds diverge considerably, leading to an increased N···N distance and consequently to less stable [N···H···N]+ hydrogen bonds in contrast to the parallel C-N bonds in the peri-substituted isomers 3 and 4. X-ray crystal structure analyses of the bases and of some of the salts derived therefrom were solved and are discussed. Cyclic voltammetry indicates that 1 to 4 are strong electron donors, reacting easily to radical cations or dications which with suitable acids have been obtained as salts.

Notes: ---Transesterifications of methyl β-keto carboxylates catalyzed by DMAP with various high boiling alcohols can be accomplished in refluxing cyclohexane in a Dean-Stark trap. The MeOH formed is removed completely from the reaction mixture as an azeotrope leading to quantitative conversions. The starting materials are converted in stoichiometric ratio, which makes the purification of the product very simple and results in high yields.

Notes: ---The equilibrium constant for the keto-enol tautomerism of 3-nitrobutan-2-one KT = [enol]/[ketone] has been measured in water as 4.57 × 10-3 (pKT = 2.34) by combining the rate constants for ketonisation of the enolate form and pKa of the ketone at 25 °C. The rates of ketonisation were measured by a rapid kinetic technique and the pKa was determined spectrophotometrically and potentiometrically as 5.15. A comparison with 2-butanone and acetone shows a strong influence of the nitro group in enhancing the acidity of the substrate and in stabilizing the enol relative to the keto tautomer. By means of semiempirical AM1 calculations, good correlations were found between the atomic charge on the acidic hydrogens and the pKa (in water at 25 °C) of both tautomeric forms for a number of simple ketones whose pKas and pKTs are available in the literature. The agreement of experimental acidity constants of the enol, pKaEH, the ketone, pKaKH, and the tautomeric constant, pKT, with predicted values is satisfactory.

Other products obtained were the corresponding olefins 4a-k and the alkanes 3g. These reactions involve homolytic cleavage of the carbon-halogen bond to give the corresponding radical. The nature of these radicals has been studied. Ab initio calculations at the MP2/6-31G* level are supportive of the formation of σ radicals. Notes: ---The electrophilic properties of the 4H-imidazoles 1 and their protonated derivatives 2 permit the introduction of nucleophilic building blocks, as illustrated by reactions of 1 with selected amines. Depending on the nature of the amine and the substituents R1 on the heterocycle 1, single (3) or double (4) transamination is observed. The 1H-NMR spectra of the products, as well as X-ray structure analyses of compounds 3f and 4c, confirm that the residues at the 4- and/or 5-positions of 1 are exchanged. The tautomerism between 3e-h and 3e′-h′ seems to be central to the chemistry of these mixed substituted derivatives. Using orthoesters and acetophenone dimethylacetal as cyclization partners, the imidazo[4,5-d]imidazoles 5 and the 4H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyrazines 6 are obtained, respectively. Reduction of 3e with Zn/HCl or H2S leads to the air-sensitive, strongly fluorescent leuco compounds 8. Quenching of 8 by addition of aromatic aldehydes results in a condensation reaction and, coupled with the subsequent redox disproportionation, this conversion constitutes an alternative route to imidazo[4,5-d]imidazoles of type 11. The unexpected reaction of 3e-h with Lawesson's reagent allows synthesis of the 6-azapentafulvenes 14. The relevant spectral data show 14 to be members of a new chromophoric system, in which an electron-rich five-membered ring is coupled with an electron-deficient ring.

Notes: ---A symmetric diketopiperazine scaffold 2 has been prepared in a very simple two-step procedure from L-aspartic acid dimethyl ester. This product (a tetracarboxylic acid equally protected at the two symmetric positions) has been employed as a template for the synthesis of mixed amide libraries in the solution phase using the SPSAF (simultaneous addition of functionalities) strategy. By judicious choice of the amines employed, it is possible to prepare parallel libraries containing hundreds of products using just a small number of different amines. We have also developed a simple method for monitoring the required conversion of the acid into amides based on an assay of the amount of iBuOH (determined by GC) formed during the coupling mediated by isobutyl chloroformate. We have observed that a conversion higher than 90% (iBuOH by GC) guarantees correct formation of the desired amides. This indirect method for assessing the conversion in a combinatorial reaction employing mixed reactants (SPSAF) can conveniently be used for the routine determination of libraries prepared in the solution phase. In a broader perspective, the present results contribute as a further step in the development of new and simple systems for monitoring the progress and evolution of combinatorial reactions

Notes: ---New electropolymerizable aromatic compounds (i.e. pyrrole, thiophene, aniline) bearing boronic acid and ester substituents have been synthesized and their electrochemical behavior has been investigated. Functionalized polythiophene and polypyrrole films could be anodically generated in acetonitrile, whereas the polyaniline derivative was electroformed in an acidic aqueous solution. The electrochemical responses of some of these materials were changed when fluoride ions were added to the electrolytic solutions. The strongest modifications, caused by binding of fluoride by the immobilized boron, were observed for the polypyrrole derivative in hydroorganic media.

Notes: ---Quinic acid was transformed into phosphitamides 16, 25, and 36, which could be readily linked to 5′-O-unprotected cytidine derivative 17. Ensuing oxidation of the obtained phosphite triesters with tBuO2H and hydrogenolytic de-O-benzylation furnished the corresponding phosphate diesters 18, 26, and 38. Base catalyzed removal of acetyl protecting groups, and methyl ester hydrolysis furnished CMP-Neu5Ac analogues 1d, 1e, and 2. Quinic acid was also transformed into 1,2-unsaturated diallyl α-hydroxymethyl-phosphate derivatives (R)- and (S)-46, which on reaction with cytidine phosphitamide 47 afforded the phosphite triesters. Subsequent oxidation with tBuO2H and then treatment with NEt3 gave phosphate diester derivatives (R)- and (S)-48. Deallylation, acetyl group removal, and methyl ester hydrolysis furnished (R)- and (S)-3, respectively. Treatment of (R)- and (S)-48 with DBU as a base led to acetic acid elimination, thus yielding, after de-O-allylation, acetyl group cleavage, and ester hydrolysis, diene derivative (E)-4. Donor substrate analogues 1d and 1e exhibited good α(2-6)-sialyltransferase inhibition (Ki: 2.0·10-4 and 2.0·10-5 M). However, transition state analogues (R)-, and particularly (S)-3 showed excellent inhibition properties (Ki: 1.6·10-6 and 2.7·10-7 M).

Notes: ---The D-homosteroid 1 was synthesized by two successive Heck reactions starting from enantiopure 3 and the bromoarene 2 containing a (Z)-bromovinyl group. The first intermolecular Pd-catalyzed reaction leads to 6 in a highly regio- and diastereoselective way which forms 1 with an unusual cis-junction of the rings B and C by a second intramolecular Heck reaction.

Notes: ---Syntheses of the spiro nucleosides 2′-deoxyhydantocidin 3a and its 1′-epimer 3b are described. The newly developed route involves a Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons condensation of the phosphonate 16 with the erythrose derivative 15 affording a mixture of six isomers which was fully assigned by NMR spectroscopy. The mixture was directly converted into the final compounds in an efficient base-catalyzed cyclization reaction. A base-catalyzed interconversion between the two isomers was observed.

Notes: ---We describe a novel one-pot double-Wittig approach towards unsymmetrically substituted skipped trienes using the symmetrical (Z)-hex-3-ene-1,6-bis(triphenylphosphonium iodide) (2) as key reagent. Double alkenylation of the corresponding bis(ylide) 3 with sequentially added aldehydes gives (Z)-1,4,7-homoconjugated trienes in good yields. Dissymmetrization of the bis(ylide) 3 is feasible, since it displays enhanced reactivity compared to the monoylide resulting from the first olefination. Symmetrical products from statistical coupling of the bis(ylide) 3 can be drastically suppressed by slow release of the first aldehyde component through in situ thermal decomposition of an intermediate aluminate complex, generated by reduction of a methyl ester with DIBAL-H. The novel strategy is successfully applied to the one-pot synthesis of functionalized and isotopically labelled polyunsaturated fatty acids as well as to the synthesis of the geometrid moth pheromone (3Z,6Z,9Z)-nonadeca-1,3,6,9-tetraene (6a). The dissymmetrization strategy was also found to be suitable for the synthesis of homoconjugated dienes from 1,3-propylbis(triphenylphosphonium bromide).

Notes: The structure and the biological significance of naturally occurring and synthetic polyamine analogues and conjugates are presented and the available methodologies for their synthesis are described. These methodologies involve either the selective functionalization of the amino functions, using suitable protecting groups or acylating agents, or fragment synthesis protocols. The latter employ suitable amino components and simple reactions, like Michael addition to α,β-unsaturated nitriles, alkylation of amines and sulfonamides, reductive alkylation and acylation followed by reduction of the thus-obtained amides, as key-reactions, or azides as key-intermediates, for the assembly of the polyamine skeleton. Syntheses performed in solution as well as in the solid phase are discussed.

Notes: ---The term 1-metalla-1,3,5-hexatriene applies to a huge number of transition metal carbene complexes which contain a 1,3-butadien-1-yl side chain attached to the carbene carbon atom. Compounds of this type were found to play a crucial role as key intermediates and have also been utilized as stoichiometric reagents in a number of high-yielding transformations, which may successfully be applied to organic syntheses. Typical reaction pathways, structural features, and preparations of such compounds (with focus on M = Cr and W) have been summarized.

Notes: ---Hydroxylation of azulenes with tert-butylhydroperoxide proceeds efficiently at the 6-position when the former contain electron-withdrawing substituents in the five-membered ring. Similarly, VNS amination of azulenes proceeds with 4-amino-1,2,4-triazole; its anion, being an active nucleophile, also reacts with unsubstituted azulene. A variety of transformations of 6-hydroxyazulenes, such as substitution of the corresponding sulfonates with nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, carbon nucleophiles and halogens, and the Claisen rearrangement of allylic ethers, is reported.

Notes: ---Prochiral 1,3-dihydroxyacetone forms racemic oxazolidine- and oxazoline-type spiro[4.4]nonanes upon reactions with potassium (thio)cyanate and cyanamide. In contrast, 1,3-diaminoacetone yields only the corresponding spiro-bisimidazolidinethione under similar conditions together with monocyclic by-products, but the spiro-bisimidazolidinone is accessible by reaction of 1,3-dichloroacetone with urea. The resolution of the racemic spiro-bisoxazolidinethione 2a was achieved by using brucine as the resolving agent.

Notes: ---Palladium-catalyzed acryloxylation of several cycloalkenes in the presence of the Pd(OAc)2/p-benzoquinone/MnO2 catalytic system is reported. This oxidation reaction yields allylic acrylates as the sole products through the intermediacy of an η3-allyl complex. However, with 1,5-cyclooctadiene (3), cyclooct-4-enone (4) is the major reaction product. Its formation results from oxidation, which is also observed in the palladium-catalyzed acetoxylation of 3. It has been shown that this is the result of a 1,2-trans addition (acryloxy-palladation), followed by a β-hydride elimination, which yields an enol acrylate or acetate. A second Markovnikov-oriented 1,2-trans-acryloxy-palladation on the latter yields a palladium complex, rearrangement of which gives 4.

Notes: ---A short synthesis of new, functionalized seven-membered ring cyclic dipeptides is described. After the coupling of N-protected β-amino acids to N-substituted α-amino tert-butyl esters, the protective groups of the terminal functions were removed and the cyclization took place diastereoselectively in the presence of the coupling agent BOP. Amide substitution was found to be effective in promoting the cyclization of linear dipeptides.

Notes: ---A set of allene-tethered benzoyloximes (5) has been treated with nBu3SnH. Depending on their substitution pattern, a wide range of compounds has been obtained. If the stannyl radical adds on the allene, the C-centred radical thus formed undergoes either a 5-exo ring closure to give the cyclopentene derivatives 7 or a 6-endo ring closure onto the N atom to give the dihydropyridines 8. If the stannyl radical adds on the benzoyl moiety, an iminyl radical is formed which leads to the 3H-pyrroles 9 and the alkylidene-pyrrolines 10. Steric effects as well as polar effects are the factors governing the reaction course.Supporting information for this article is available on the WWW under //http://www.wiley-vch.de/contents/jc_2046/2000/99373_s.pdf or from the author.

Notes: ---The N-DMM-Protected lactosamine derivative 2 was readily transformed into the corresponding glycosyl donor 4 and into acceptor 5. A TMSOTf-catalyzed glycosidation afforded the derived tetrasaccharide 6 which led to glycosyl donor 9. Reaction of 9 with lactose derivative 10 as acceptor gave the desired hexasaccharide 11. Cleavage of all protective groups and N-acetylation afforded the target molecule 1b (lacto-N-neohexaose). Glycosylation of acceptor 10 with donor 4 furnished tetrasaccharide 16 which, employing standard procedures, gave acceptor 18. Glycosylation of 18 with donor 9 furnished, under standard conditions, octasaccharide 19. Cleavage of all protective groups and N-acetylation afforded the target molecule 1c (lacto-N-neooctaose). Both 1b and 1c were obtained in good overall yields.

Notes: ---The most efficient method for the synthesis of the trans/threo/trans-bis(tetrahydrofuran) (THF) ring unit was established, and the first total synthesis of (-)-asimilobin and its diastereomer was then accomplished in twelve and fourteen steps, respectively, from trans-1,5,9-decatriene, by a convergent route with a Wittig reaction as the key step. By virtue of these synthetic results, the absolute configuration of the bis(THF) unit in naturally occurring asimilobin should be corrected.

Notes: ---The complex molecular structure and interesting activation mechanisms of naturally occurring enediynes have inspired the synthesis of a variety of simpler model systems to mimic their properties. While in most model compounds nucleophilic attack, isomerization or bioreduction are used to activate the unsaturated system for diradical cyclization, some attempts have been made to employ metal-ion coordination for this purpose. Significant enhancement of the thermal reactivity has been achieved by metal-ion induced conformational and electronic changes of suitably substituted enediynes, such as 1, 5, 6, 17 and 18. Enediyne activation by stoichiometric or catalytic formation of vinylidene complexes, such as 22, from terminal alkynes has also been investigated. This paper summarizes recent results pursuing the activation of enediyne diradical cyclization by metal ions.

Notes: ---The first enantioselective synthesis of enantiomerically pure (-)-wine lactone, (-)-1a, a fragrance constituent of various white wines, and its epimer (+)-1b, was carried out. The key steps are allylic substitution of (±)-2-cyclohexen-1-yl acetate (2) with dimethylmalonate using palladium complexes of phosphanyldihydrooxazol L1 or of the phosphanylcarboxylic acid L2 as catalyst, subsequent decarboxylation, iodolactonization and elimination, furnishing enantiomerically pure bicyclic lactone (+)-7 in 47% overall yield. The diastereoselective introduction of methyl groups by SN2′-type substitution with an organocopper compound and by enolate alkylation gave lactone (-)-1a in 43% overall yield from (+)-7.
