Notes: Summary Endogenous TRH levels were determined in plasma obtained selectively via percutaneous transhepatic and femoral catheterization. TRH was measured using a very sensitive RIA method. In the pancreatic veins, internal jugular vein, left testicular vein, and other described veins, normal peripheral levels were found. An involvement of the TRH degrading enzyme (TDE) or a rapid intravasal dilution leading to normal peripheral TRH levels in the veins leaving the brain or pancreas, respectively, is discussed.

Notes: Summary In six patients with adrenal pheochromocytoma the tumors were localized by ultrasonography, phlebography of the adrenal glands and by estimation of plasma catecholamines selectively obtained from the vena cava and the adrenal gland veins. All tumors were localized by selective catecholamine estimation, five by ultrasonography, and four by phlebography. The smallest pheochromocytoma of 1.5 g weight was only localized by selective catecholamine estimation but not by ultrasonography or phlebography. This tumor, however, had been visualized by computed tomography. To avoid diagnostic errors by selective catecholamine estimation, it is important to withdraw blood from the adrenal gland veins prior to the injection of any radiographic contrast media, since this may result in an extremely enhanced secretion of catecholamines from the adrenal medulla.

Notes: Summary The combination of two methods in diagnosis of metastasis of liver has been described and has shown that the determination of enzymatic acitivities in the serum of tumor patients together with the scintigrafic examination increases the number of positive results. Elavations of the serum enzymes activities occur especially if metastasis located in the hepatic hilar region. It was found to be necessary to examen several different enzymes like MDH, LDH, SGOT, SGPT, alkaline phosphatase and if possible Leucin-amino-peptidase (LAP). We believe that enzymatic and scintigrafic examinations of the liver are good clinical supplementation in diagnosis of metastatic liver lesion.

Notes: Abstract An enzyme that uses GTP as a substrate for the formation of formate and a 2.4.5-triamino-6-hydroxypyrimidine derivative has been determined in the riboflavin overproducing yeast Pichia guilliermondii. In rib 1 mutants this enzyme is absent. This implies an involvement of the enzyme in the riboflavin biosynthesis and indicates that GTP is a purine precursor of riboflavin. Some properties of the GTP cyclohydrolase (substrate specificity, pH and temperature optima, activators and inhibitors, molecular weight, stability) were studied using a partly purified enzyme preparation. Cells grown under riboflavin overproducing conditions (iron deficiency) have 20–40-fold increased enzyme activity as compared with non-overproducing cultures (supplemented with iron).

Notes: Abstract. With the advent of ultrasound (US), Doppler and color-flow Doppler imaging, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) the ability for non-invasive studies of the abdominal vasculature has been enhanced considerably. In this paper an overview on various abdominal vascular pathologies is presented. Because of the dramatic improvements in image quality, special emphasis is given on the potential role of breathhold contrast-enhanced three-dimensional (3D) MRA which appears to be a versatile non-invasive alternative to conventional angiography.

Notes: Abstract In recent years new analogue and digital techniques have become available for chest imaging. This study compares conventional film/screen, asymmetric film/screen (InSight), equalization (Amber), storage phosphor and digital image intensifier techniques by phantom exposures and patient examinations. The quality of chest images of 43 patients was classified by seven observers in four different hospitals. According to the results of phantom measurements and a previous study, digital image intensifier radiography was excluded from the patient examinations because of its low image quality. The Amber system had the best image quality. Images of the storage phosphor system were of good quality in both mediastinal and peripheral fields of the chest. Compared to conventional film/screen, the asymmetric film/screen (InSight) was graded higher in the mediastinal field, but lower in the peripheral field.

Notes: Abstract Cephalopelvic disproportion between pelvic and fetal diameters has been evaluated by pelvimetry. The study consisted of 257 women with pelvimetry by digital-image-intensifier radiography and fetometry by US. Information about the management of labour and the mode of delivery has been obtained from the obsterician. Differences between five pelvimetric diameters and the fetal biparietal diameter (BIP) have been correlated to the mode of delivery. Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U-tests show high significance for small or negative differences between interspinous as well as intertuberous distance and BIP in the group of Caesarean sections. According to empirical determination cephalopelvic disproportion can be supposed for differences ≤ 0.0 cm and borderline conditions for 0.0–1.0 cm. The investigated sagittal pelvic diameters did not show a correlation to the mode of delivery. For the detection of cephalopelvic disproportion “interspinous distance-BIP” is suited best. In conclusion, the plane of the mid-pelvis has been found to be the most important parameter.

Notes: Abstract. With approximately 150 reported cases, fistulas between the abdominal aorta and inferior vena cava are rare. Preoperative clinical diagnosis of aortocaval fistula is difficult because the classical triad of abdominal pain, pulsatile abdominal mass, and abdominal machinery-like bruit may be absent in up to 50 % of patients. We report a case of aortocaval fistula complicating abdominal aortic aneurysm which was diagnosed preoperatively using breath-hold gadolinium-enhanced three-dimensional MR angiography.

Notes: Abstract. The aim of this study was to evaluate the suitability of electron beam tomography (EBT) with fast continuous volume scanning for CT angiography (CTA) in chest and abdomen. An Evolution XP EBT scanner with a new software version (12.34) was used. One hundred forty images per study can be acquired in 17 s using 3-mm collimation and overlapping image reconstruction. Study protocols for five different clinical applications of EBT CTA were established and evaluated. The EBT CTA technique was performed in 155 patients. High- and homogeneous density values were achieved along the whole course of the vessels; the mean density in the aorta was 〉 240 HU. Coeliac axis, superior and inferior mesenteric artery, renal and lumbar arteries were visualised in all cases. Maximum intensity projection and shaded surface display reconstruction demonstrated the relation between aneurysm and aortic branches very well due to an excellent resolution along the z-axis. In large scan volumes overlapping image reconstruction demonstrated better resolution along the z-axis than is available with helical CT. The EBT CTA technique proved to be very well suited excellent suitability for evaluation of pulmonary vessels. Compared with helical CT, EBT CTA offers a shorter scan time, which allows higher contrast enhancement in pulmonary vessels. The identification of intraluminal emboli and mural thrombi has improved. The EBT CTA technique is a very reliable tool for evaluation of aortic disease and pulmonary vessels.

Notes: Abstract The performance of breath-hold MR imaging using two T2-weighted hybrid sequences (TSE, TGSE), two T2-weighted single-shot sequences (HASTE, EPI-SE), and one T1-weighted gradientecho sequence (FLASH) was compared with a standard conventional T2-weighted SE sequence in 20 patients with focal liver lesions. Liver signal-to-noise ratio was highest spleen-liver contrast-to-noise ratio (54.3 ± 8.3) and thee HASTE (41.1 ± 12.5) sequence, whereas the highest spleen-liver contrast-noise-ratio was obtained by the TSE sequence (38.9 ± 20.7). Lesion-liver CNR was highest with the TSE sequence (63.9 ± 21.4). With both TSE and HASTE significantly (p 〈 0.01) more lesions were detected as compared with SE and EPE-SE sequences. Our results indicate that breath-hold TSE and HASTE sequences will eventually replace conventional T2-weighted SE techniques due to their insensitivity to motion artifacts, superior lesion detectability and inherently short acquisitions times.
