Notes: We successfully produced intense beams of highly charged metallic ions from various kinds of organic metallic compounds by the metal ions from volatile compounds method and solid materials in RIKEN 18 GHz electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS) (e.g., 135 eμA of Fe11+, 80 eμA of Fe13+, 10 eμA of Os29+, and 1 eμA of Os37+). Using this ECRIS the ion confinement time of highly charged ions was determined under the pulsed mode operation. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The use of anodic oxidation as a post-treatment of porous silicon has been investigated to enhance the external quantum efficiency of electroluminescence from a device based on a thin transparent indium tin oxide contact on porosified n+-type silicon. Enhancement in external quantum efficiency of three orders of magnitude has been obtained. We report here an external quantum efficiency of 0.21%. The treatment also greatly improves the stability of the device. Results can be explained by the fact that anodic oxidation considerably reduces leakage current flowing via nonconfined silicon. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Background It has been suggested that mast cells and eosinophils are major effector cells in the pathogenesis of allergic diseases. However, the interaction of these cells has not been thoroughly elucidated. We examined eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) release and cytosolic free calcium concentration ([Ca2+]) in human eosinophils induced by the major mast-cell mediators including cytokines. Methods Eosinophils from healthy donors were stimulated with the major mast-cell mediators for 20 min after preincubation with cytochalasin B for 10 min. ECP in supernatants was measured by radioimmunoassay. Moreover, t o examine changes of [Ca2+]i in eosinophils, Fura-2-loaded eosinophils were monitored for fluorescence changes after stimulus addition. Results Of the tested mediators (prostaglandin [PG]D2, leukotriene (LT)B4, platelet-activating factor (PAF), histamine, LTQ, and eosinophil chemotactic factor of anaphylaxis [ECF-A]), LTB4 and PAF induced ECP release from eosinophils. Any cytokines produced by human mast cells, i.e., interleukin (IL)-4, IL-5, IL-8, tumor necrosis factor (TNF), or granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), did not induce ECP release in our system. ECP release triggered with LTB4 and PAF occurred at concentrations of 10−8-10−6 M concentration-dependently. LTB4 and PAF also elicited a rise in [Ca2+]i in eosinophils. Neither PGDj, histamine, nor LTC4 induced ECP release, although they increased cytosolic calcium in eosinophils. Conclusions Of mast-cell mediators, LTB4 and PAF induced eosinophil degranulation. The contribution of LTB4 and PAF from mast cells to eosinophil degranulation may be important in the pathogenesis of allergic inflammatory diseases.

Notes: Abstract. Three cases with anomalous insertion of the superior or inferior vena cava into the right atrium are presented. One case was a 25-year-old healthy man with anomalous low insertion of the right superior vena cava into the right atrium. The remaining two cases were infants with complex cardiac anomalies showing anomalous high insertion of the inferior vena cava into the right atrium. The congenital anomalies of the connection between the superior and the inferior vena cava and the right atrium are rare. Angiographic and computed tomographic findings of these anomalies were reported.

Notes: Summary The purpose of this study was to characterize regional blood flow (BF) in untreated cerebral gliomas (CG) using stable Xe-enhanced computed tomography (XeCT). XeCT of 38 patients with untreated CG were analyzed and compared with CT and magnetic resonance images (MRI) and histopathological findings. Individual averaged BF values for tumour in 29 high grade gliomas (HGGs) and 9 low grade gliomas (LGGs) were intermediate between averaged BF values for cortex and white matter in the non-tumour bearing hemisphere. All averaged BF values for cyst and central necrosis were very low. In 27 HGGs, BF in tumour was relatively high in ring-enhancement lesions on CT and MRI, but was low even in viable tumour centers showing no contrast enhancement. In the other 2 HGGs, BF was low in tumour center and relatively high in tumour periphery regardless of homogeneous enhancement. In 5 HGGs, averaged BF value of the cortex outside surrounding oedema was higher than that of cortex in the non-tumour bearing hemisphere. In LGGs, BF distribution in tumour was homogeneously low in 3 small-sized and heterogeneous in 6 large-sized lesions including moderately high and low BF regions. These differences in BF pattern between HGGs and LGGs on XeCT might be helpful in considering to some extent the histopathology of untreated cerebral glioma pre-operatively.

Notes: Summary We investigated the role of plasminogen activators (PAs) and their inhibitor (plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, PAI-1) in human brain tumours. The amounts of urokinase-type plasminogen activator (u-PA), tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA), and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), and the activity of u-PA and t-PA were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and u-PA and PAI-1 were immunolocalized using monoclonal antibodies in human brain tumours and normal brain tissues. The tissues were surgically removed from 64 patients; normal brain tissue (5 cases), low-grade glioma (4 cases), high-grade glioma (17 cases), metastatic tumour (9 cases), meningioma (benign 12 cases, malignant 6 cases), acoustic schwannoma (11 cases). u-PA activity and u-PA and PAI-1 antigen levels were significantly elevated in malignant brain tumours (malignant meningiomas, high-grade gliomas, and metastatic tumours) and acoustic schwannomas but very low in benign meningiomas, low-grade gliomas and normal brain. There was no difference in t-PA antigen levels among normal and malignant tissues, however levels of t-PA activity were markedly decreased in metastastic tumours. All malignant brain tumour tissues showed positive immunostaining for u-PA and PAI-1, however, some tumour cells showed negative intensity while others showed strong intensity for these antibodies. This contrasts to the homogeneous staining pattern found in acoustic schwannoma. These findings indicate that malignancy in human brain tumours is associated with elevated levels of u-PA and PAI-1 and that an imbalance between these proteins in a micro-enviroment contributes (ascribes) to tumour cell invasion.

Notes: Abstract. Background: The purpose of this multi-institutional study was to examine the appearance of struma ovarii on magnetic resonance (MR) images. Methods: MR images of 12 patients with histologically proven struma ovarii were retrospectively reviewed. All patients underwent T1-weighted and T2-weighted imaging. Contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images with Gd-DTPA were available in 10 patients. The following determinations were made: tumor morphology, signal intensities, contrast-enhancement effects of solid components with Gd-DTPA, and comparison of MR images with resected specimens. Results: All 12 patients had both cystic and solid components, with a multilobulated surface and thickened septa. Signal intensities on T1-weighted images were mainly low, partly intermediate to high, or high, and those on T2-weighted images were mainly high, with different signal intensities. Contrast-enhancement effects were marked or moderate. The contents that showed low signal intensities on T1-weighted images and signal voids or low signal intensities on T2-weighted images were viscid gelatinous materials. Conclusions: A multicystic tumor with a solid component, a multilobulated surface, and signal intensities that indicate the presence of viscid gelatinous materials appear to be a characteristic MR finding of struma ovarii.

Notes: Abstract Although aminoglycosides have been investigated for their cochleotoxicity, it has still not been determined whether apoptosis or necrosis results in cochlear hair cell death following aminoglycoside treatment. To study possible mechanisms of cell death, we used in situ DNA break-labeling to examine guinea pig cochleae affected by kanamycin ototoxicity. Chronic kanamycin treatment induced DNA fragmentation that was detectable in both outer and inner hair cells, suggesting the occurrence of apoptosis. These findings suggest that apoptosis achieves deletion of affected hair cells without disrupting tissue architecture in the organ of Corti.

Notes: Abstract We developed a computer program to perform three-dimensional analysis of the acetabular coverage of the femoral head using two anteroposterior (supine and erect) radiographs of the hip. The center of radiation was marked, and an additional vertical line was placed on radiographs in the neutral standing position, permitting estimation of change in pelvic tilt and its effect on acetabular coverage. We studied 64 normal hip joints, 82 acetabular dysplastic hip joints, and 15 hip joints that had undergone rotational acetabular osteotomy (RAO). In normal hips, the pelvis tilted posteriorly on standing, and the anterior acetabular coverage decreased, but the extent of reduction was not significant. However, in dysplastic hip joints, the pelvic tilt changed from the posterior to anterior direction and from the painful side to the nonpainful side with progression of osteoarthritis. While RAO provided sufficient correction of anterior coverage for acetabular dysplasia, lack of posterior coverage was sometimes observed.

Notes: Summary This paper is concerned with experiments on thermal convection between two coaxial square containers. It is found that there exists a critical Rayleigh number (Ra)c of 1660 approximately for the onset of the thermal convection in top-test section. The vertical velocity distributions at the middle height of left side-test section agree with the classical theory well. The width of the present convection roll in top-test section is of the same order as the height. The reason why the convection rolls or fluid mass in top-test section are transported to the right- or left-direction is discussed and attributed to a new mechanism of mass transport, consisting of three-stages broadly, viz., (a) extension-stage, (b) splitting-stage, and (c) birth-stage.
