Notes: Summary We measured endogenous digitalis-like factor (EDF) in rat plasma during acute saline infusion by two different procedures. Na+,K+-ATPase inhibitory activity in the rat plasma significantly increased during saline loading (7.8±2.2 vs 2.5±0.9%, with and without acute saline loading, respectively, p〈0.05). On the other hand, the plasma digoxin-like immunoreactivity significantly decreased during acute saline loading (16.9±1.6 vs 32.0±2.8 pg digoxin equivalents/ml. with and without acute saline loading, respectively, p〈0.01). These results indicate that the major substances detected by digoxin-like immunoreactivity and direct Na+,K+-ATPase inhibitory activity are completely different, at least in rat plasma.

Notes: Summary The mortality rate from tetanus is still high if the disease is accompanied by signs of autonomic nervous system dysfunction. We treated a 75-year-old woman with tetanus and autonomic dysfunction with continuous high spinal anesthesia for 23 days. She recovered. Spinal anesthesia may be a useful adjunct for the treatment of severe tetanus.

Notes: Summary Projections from the posterior thalamic regions to the striatum were studied in the cat by the anterograde tracing method after injecting wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase conjugate (WGA-HRP) into the caudalmost regions of the lateroposterior thalamic nucleus (caudal LP), suprageniculate nucleus (Sg) and magnocellular division of the medial geniculate nucleus (MGm). The results were further confirmed by the retrograde tracing method after injecting WGA-HRP into the regions of the caudate nucleus (Cd) and putamen (Put) where afferent fibers from the caudal LP, Sg and MGm were distributed. Fibers from the MGm, Sg or caudal LP were distributed mainly in the medial, middle or lateral part of the caudal half of the putamen (caudal Put), respectively. Although there was a considerable overlap, thalamostriatal fibers from the caudal LP terminated more caudally than those from the MGm. On the other hand, thalamocaudate fibers from the MGm, Sg and lateral part of the caudal LP overlapped with each other in the ventrolateral part of the caudal half of the caudate nucleus (caudal Cd). Fibers from the medial part of the caudal LP were distributed in the ventral part of the caudal Cd. In the superior colliculus (SC) of the cats with WGA-HRP injections in the caudal LP, retrogradely labeled neuronal cell bodies were mainly seen ipsilaterally in the superficial SC layer, and simultaneously, anterogradely labeled axon terminals were observed in the striatum. On the other hand, when WGA-HRP was injected into the Sg or MGm, labeled SC neurons were mainly located in the intermediate and deep SC layers. Thus, ascending impulses from the superficial SC layer may possibly be conveyed ipsilaterally via the caudal LP to the ventral and ventrolateral parts of the caudal Cd and the lateral part of the caudal Put, whereas those from the intermediate and deep SC layers may be relayed via the Sg and/or MGm to the ventrolateral part of the caudal Cd and the middle and medial parts of the caudal Put.

Notes: Summary The renal and hormonal effects of the α1-adrenoceptor blocker bunazosin were examined in 6 patients with essential hypertension. Oral bunazosin for 4 to 12 weeks significantly decreased mean blood pressure by 10%, increased effective renal blood flow and creatinine clearance by 34% and 37%, respectively, the plasma norepinephrine concentration was elevated by 60%, and the plasma atrial natriuretic peptide level was lowered by 22%. The plasma renin activity and aldosterone concentration were unchanged. Thus, a moderate reduction in blood pressure was produced by bunazosin treatment while maintaining renal perfusion.

Notes: Summary The authors report a new experimental model for the study of hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus was produced in C 57 black mouse by transplanting human glioma cultured cells. 20% of the animals developed hydrocephalus while the incidence of spontaneous hydrocephalus is only 1%. The transplanted cells disappeared within 72 hours. The mouse developed progressive hydrocephalus. There was no evidence of blockage of CSF pathways. The only abnormal microscopic finding was a scattered collection of lymphoid cells in some of the animals, which may be a hypersensitivity reaction to the cells. A similarly hypersensitive reaction to the foreign maternal protein which may enter the foetal circulation is suggested as the cause of hydrocephalus in some of the cases of congenital hydrocephalus.

Notes: The amount of charges induced by high energy single ion irradiation at a p-n junction diode has been measured and its dependence on the ion incident position has been evaluated by using single-ion microprobe technique. By irradiating single He ions with various incident energy (1.4–4.05 MeV), dependence of the profiles of collected charges on the ion incident energy has been investigated. Origins of the different profiles among the different incident energy are discussed in terms of different contribution of two mechanisms of charge collection, namely, field funneling and diffusion of carriers. In the case of the ion incidence within the junction area, dependence of the charge collection profile on the ion incident energy comes from different contribution of the funneling in the charge collection process, while difference in the collection efficiency of the diffused charges affects the profile in the case of the ion incidence at outside of the junction. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Among the proposed magnetically induced super resolution media, double-mask rear aperture detection (RAD) has the greatest potential for use in high-density land/groove recording.1 We proposed a trilayer double-mask RAD media that does not require a large initializing magnetic field.2 In this paper, we report the land/groove recording on the trilayer media for a 0.4 μm mark length and 0.7 μm track pitch. We found that crosstalk drastically changed depending on the direction of the readout magnetic field, and that the crosswrite is related to crosstalk. When applying the readout magnetic field in the erasing direction, the value of crosstalk was about −25 dB and a large crosswrite effect was observed. Conversely, the crosstalk was below −45 dB and no crosswrite effect was observed when applying the magnetic field in the writing direction. CNRs had almost the same value of 48 dB for both the above cases. To investigate the mask formation while applying the readout field in the writing direction, we precisely observed the wave form of the isolated marks. The carrier level rose twice with increasing readout field. However, the position of the leading edge mainly changed when increasing the field. We think that the low crosstalk is attributable to the enhancement of the front mask area. The trilayer media enables an areal density of 3 Gbit/in.2 © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Background. The intraarterial approach is one of the most important routes for the administration of anticancer drugs for head and neck cancer. A profound knowledge of the anatomical characteristics and variations of the carotid artery, such as its branching pattern, length, and inner diameter, is essential to avoid complications with catheter insertion. Methods. We conducted a morphometric investigation of head and neck arteries in 29 Japanese cadavers (58 sites). Results. The branching pattern of the external carotid artery showed variations. In 65.5% of the cadavers, the lingual, facial, and superior thyroid arteries arose separately. However, in 31.0% of the cadavers, the lingual artery formed a common trunk with the facial artery, and in 3.5%, the lingual artery formed a common trunk with the superior thyroid artery. The transverse facial artery arose from the superficial temporal artery in 53.4% of the specimens, from the maxillary artery in 27.6%, and from a site central to the maxillary artery in 19.0%. The posterior auricular artery arose from the external carotid artery at the same level as the maxillary artery in 37.9% of specimens, and from a site central to the maxillary artery in 62.1%. The occipital artery arose from the external carotid artery at the same level as the maxillary artery in 55.2% of specimens, and from a site peripheral to the facial artery in 44.8%. The lengths from the auricular point to the origins of the upper branches of the external carotid artery were: 2.8 mm to the transverse facial artery, 3.2 cm to the maxillary artery, 3.8 cm to the posterior auricular artery, 6.6 cm to the occipital artery, 7.4 cm to the facial artery, 8.8 cm to the lingual artery, and 10.4 cm to the superior thyroid artery. Conclusions. These results, have led to some clarification of the clinicoanatomical basis for intraarterial infusion. These data should be helpful for assessing the approximate level of the catheter tip and for evaluating whether the catheter is placed appropriately, by transient staining of the infused area.
