Notes: Clotting factor concentrates prepared from human plasma are a potential route of parvovirus B19 (B19) infection in patients with coagulation disorders. However, it is not clear whether B19 transmits and persistently infects patients with haemophilia, especially those with HIV infection. We examined serological and virological markers of B19 in samples from 40 patients with haemophilia who had been receiving several brands of clotting factor concentrates. All of them were anti-B19 IgG seropositive and anti-B19 IgM seronegative. The levels of anti-B19 IgG were significantly higher in haemophiliacs than in healthy donors, whereas there was no difference between the level of anti-B19 IgG in haemophiliacs with HIV infection and those without HIV infection. Moreover, there was no difference between the level of anti-B19 IgG in haemophiliacs receiving recombinant factor VIII and that in those receiving plasma-derived clotting factors. Although by using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) B19 DNA was detected at very low levels (〈 40 DNA copies mL−1, in 3 out of 40 haemophiliacs, persistent B19 infection was negligible.

Notes: By using the second harmonic generation (SHG) microscope, which we have recently developed, two-dimensional images of ferroelectric domain structure were successfully obtained by exploiting the inhomogeneous distribution of the quadratic nonlinear optical constant in specimens. 90° domain structure of BaTiO3 was observed with intensity contrast of the second harmonic wave. A periodically inverted antiparallel domain in LiTaO3 was also observed. This fact indicates that the SHG microscope provides a new method of observing antiparallel ferroelectric domain structure in a nondestructive way, which is especially important for characterizing the quasiphase matched devices for compact blue light lasers. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A Mn–Zn ferrite with a grain size of about 2 μm has been developed for the transformer driven at around 1 MHz. The developed ferrite exhibits considerably lower core losses than a conventional Mn–Zn ferrite with a grain size of about 10 μm at a frequency of 0.5 to 2 MHz. The thin-type transformer using the developed ferrite driven at 1 MHz shows a high efficiency of more than 95% at an output power of 10 to 17 W and a much lower surface temperature rise than the transformer using the conventional ferrite. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The electrical degradation of AlInAs/GaInAs high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) due to the fluorine contamination is quantitatively explained through the comprehensive annealing experiments and bias-temperature tests. The thermal degradation rate is found to be mainly determined by the following electrochemical reaction of fluorine with donor species after the quite fast diffusion of fluorine into the AlInAs layer. It is also confirmed that the thermal degradation is stringently affected by the electric field resulting in the one-sided degradation near the anode. These findings are valuable knowledges in improving the reliability of AlInAs/GaInAs HEMT under the dc accelerated life test at high temperature. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have observed the dressed-exciton oscillating emission in the time domain and the associated spectral splitting in the frequency domain from a GaAs single quantum well microcavity over a very broad range of cavity resonant wavelengths. The spectral splitting and temporal oscillation period have been measured to be nearly constant over two orders of magnitude variation of pump intensity, which confirms the linear bosonic feature of Wannier excitons in the weak excitation regime. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The origin of the thermal instability of the AlInAs/GaInAs system is identified and a novel method to recover the thermal degradation is also demonstrated. The thermal diffusion of fluorine into the Si-doped AlInAs layer is found to be the main cause of the electrical deterioration of this system. This finding has led to a method to recover the thermal degradation by purging the fluorine off using the reannealing in the ultrahigh-vacuum condition. This method is now potentially becoming a good candidate as a tip for the AlInAs/GaInAs devices fabrication including laser diode and high electron mobility transistor. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The coexistence of antidesmoglein 3 (Dsg3) and antidesmoglein 1 (Dsg1) autoantibodies is well described in patients with pemphigus vulgaris (PV); however, there is little evidence of sequential development of these two autoantibodies. Autoantibody responses to Dsg3 and Dsg1 were studied in seven PV patients over time by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, using baculovirus expressed recombinant fusion proteins. All patients had anti-Dsg3 IgG antibodies at presentation. Two patients developed anti-Dsg1 later in the course of the disease. The transition in autoantibody profile was associated with disease progression to generalized PV involving mucous membranes and skin in both patients; one patient initially presented with a predominantly mucosal phenotype, the other with herpetiform pemphigus-like features. These findings demonstrate that there is an extension of autoimmune response from anti-Dsg3 only to both anti-Dsg3 and anti-Dsg1 in some patients, which is associated with an alteration in clinical expression in PV.

Notes: In nutrient medium, aluminium (Al) accumulation in tobacco cells occurs only in the presence of ferrous ion [Fe(II)]. The localization of Al was examined to elucidate a mechanism of Al accumulation. After the digestion of Al-treated cells with cellulase and pectolyase together, the resulting spheroplasts contained as much Al as the intact cells. However, the cell walls isolated from Al-treated cells also contained as much Al as the intact cells. Comparison of sugar and Al contents in polysaccharide components extracted chemically from cell walls isolated from intact cells and spheroplasts revealed that the enzymes digested most of the cellulose and hemicellulose, but only half of the pectin, and that Al mainly existed in the pectin remaining in the spheroplasts. Gel-permeation chromatography of the pectin fraction (NH4-oxalate extract) from the cell walls of the intact cells indicated that Al was associated with small polysaccharides of approximately 3–7 kDa. These results suggest that a minor part of pectin is a major site of Al accumulation. The content of cell wall pectin increased during Al treatment in nutrient medium. Taken together, we hypothesize that Al may bind to the pectin newly produced during Al treatment.

Notes: The morphology of the tongue of an adult Formosan serow was examined to compare it with that of the Japanese serow by macroscopical and scanning electron microscopical observations. The tongue was 13.5 cm in length and 82 g in weight. The apex showed a U-shaped outline. There were 340 fungiform papillae and 23 vallate papillae on both sides. Filiform, fungiform, conical and vallate papillae were found. Annular pads surrounding the vallate papillae were poorly developed. No lenticular or foliate papillae were seen on the dorsal surface. These findings indicate that the tongue of the Formosan serow is smaller and less complex morphologically than that of the Japanese serow.
