    Notes: Evidence has accumulated that nitric oxide is involved in the regulation of gastrointestinal motor activity. We investigated whether nitric oxide derived from a sustained-release isosorbide dinitrate (Cedocard retard) had an effect on gastric emptying and on subjective feelings.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods:Twelve healthy males aged 23–32 years received at weekly intervals, for 3 days twice daily, either 20 mg isosorbide dinitrate, 40 mg isosorbide dinitrate, or placebo, under random double-blind conditions. After a further dose on day 4, subjects ate a 1168 kJ semisolid meal, the emptying of which was recorded scintigraphically for 50 min.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:Neither dosage of isosorbide dinitrate had an effect on emptying which differed from the effect of placebo and the effects of the two dosages were the same. The radioactivity remaining in the stomach 50 min postprandially was 68.5% ± 4.5 S.E.M. after placebo, 65.4 ± 5.6% after 20 mg isosorbide dinitrate and 66.1 ± 4.4% after 40 mg isosorbide dinitrate. With 40 mg isosorbide dinitrate, all 12 subjects complained of persistent headache, whereas only slight headache was reported by 7 subjects on 20 mg isosorbide dinitrate and by 1 subject on placebo.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusion:Twenty and 40 mg doses of sustained-release isosorbide dinitrate twice daily had no effect on the gastric emptying of a semisolid meal, but dose-dependently induced headaches.

    Notes: A Fortran program for plotting contour maps of texture functions is described. The program works at high speed and is very flexible in application. For input the values of the texture function, which have been measured or calculated on a grid of mesh points, are required. From these data, the single-level lines of a contour map are calculated and plotted. Format and caption of the contour map as well as the marking of the level lines can be individually chosen. In the present paper the program is applied to direct and inverse pole figures as well as to a three-dimensional orientation distribution function (ODF) of a silver sheet deformed by 99.3%.

    Notes: The loss of the orthogonality relationships in the incomplete pole-figure method leads to the necessity of solving a large set of equations to obtain the C coefficients of the orientation distribution function (ODF). The knowledge of the normalization factor Ni of each pole figure allows the large set of equations to be divided into subsets of reduced size. This paper presents a way to determine the Ni factor from the nullity of the F02 coefficient of the series expansion of the pole figure for cubic lattice symmetry. Calculations have been carried out for a sample with a triclinic symmetry.

    Notes: Abstract: We developed a head-mounted display (HMD) with integrated computer-generated stereoscopic projection of target structures and integrated it into visit, a specific oral implant planning and navigation software. The HMD is equipped with two miniature computer monitors that project computer-generated graphics stereoscopically into the optical path. Its position is tracked by the navigation system's optical tracker and target structures are displayed in their true position over the operation site. In order to test this system's accuracy and spatial perception of the viewer, five interforaminal implants in three dry human mandibles were planned with visit and executed using the stereoscopic projection through the HMD. The deviation between planned and achieved position of the implants was measured on corresponding computed tomography (CT) scan images recorded post-operatively. The deviation between planned and achieved implant position at the jaw crest was 0.57 ± 0.49 mm measured from the lingual, and 0.58 ± 0.4 mm measured from the buccal cortex. At the tip of the implants the deviation was 0.77 ± 0.63 mm at the lingual and 0.79 ± 0.71 mm at the buccal cortex. The mean angular deviation between planned and executed implant position was 3.55 ± 2.07 degrees. The present in vitro experiment indicates that the concept of preoperative planning and transfer to the operative field by an HMD allows us to achieve an average precision within 1 mm (range up to 3 mm) of the implant position and within 3° deviation for the implant inclination (range up to 10°). Control during the drilling procedure is significantly improved by stereoscopic vision through the HMD resulting in a more accurate inclination of the implants.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary At present, the importation into Germany of life-threatening and highly contagious diseases such as pneumonic plague and Ebola is unlikely, but cannot be ruled out. In spite of the extreme rarity of these diseases, guidelines are necessary to prevent the spread of these agents in case of their importation. In Germany, marked regional differences exist with respect to the development of emergency regulations and the availability of specialized centers for diagnostics and therapy. A federal framework is missing. A concept is presented here in which the capacity to respond is substantially augmented with limited additional cost through inter-regional cooperation using existing infrastructure and federally standardized procedures.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Ein Einschleppen lebensbedrohender und zugleich hochkontagiöser Infektionskrankheiten wie Lungenpest oder Ebola-Fieber nach Deutschland erscheint zur Zeit nicht sehr wahrscheinlich, ist aber grundsätzlich nicht auszuschließen. Gerade wegen der Seltenheit des Auftretens einer solchen Erkrankung sind jedoch auch hierzulande Handlungsrichtlinien notwendig, um gegebenenfalls einer Verbreitung entgegenzuwirken. Die Entwicklung konkreter Schutzvorkehrungen und Handlungsalgorithmen sowie das Vorhalten geeigneter Diagnostik- und Behandlungseinrichtungen ist in den einzelnen Regionen Deutschlands sehr unterschiedlich ausgeprägt. Ein bundesweiter Rahmenplan fehlt. Der vorliegende Konzeptentwurf zeigt, wie die Vorsorge mit vertretbarem finanziellen Mehraufwand durch eine gemeinsame überregionale Nutzung der z. T. vorhandenen Infrastruktur und durch eine Vereinbarung bundeseinheitlicher Vorgehensweisen wesentlich verbessert werden kann.
