    Notes: Summary Theoretical models for sample selection by diagnosis using one, one-out-of-two, two, two-out-of-three, and three concurring opinions are illustrated. These models are then applied to two categories, schizophrenia and depressive disorders, for an actual sample of patients diagnosed by multiple observers. The conclusion is reached that sample selection by a single opinion is not sufficiently reliable for research studies. The choice of alternative methods of selection depends on the needs of a particular study. Samples chosen on the basis of two-out-of-three concurring opinions provide the least total error. When erroneous inclusions are particularly undesirable, higher degrees of consensus—e.g. agreeing pairs or triplets—are necessary.

    Notes: Summary The results of the interaction of imipramine, physostigmine and d/l amphetamine in various intravenously administered dosages were studied on the cortical and subcortical electrical activity of cats. Imipramine was shown to cause a cortical synchronization, hippocampal desynchronization, rise in the threshold of electrocortical arousal and limbic convulsive activity which was potentiated by amphetamine. Imipramine increased the amount of physostigmine, but decreased the amount of amphetamine needed for cortical desynchronization. The possible significance of these findings for the neuropsychopharmacological action of imipramine is briefly discussed.

    Notes: Summary 1. The effects of amphetamine on the sleep-wakefulness cycle were studied in 48 kittens during the growth period of 1–28 days of age. Recordings of EEG, EMG of the posterior neck muscles and respiratory rhythms were made as well as observations of gross behavior. 2. Percent time of wakefulness was increased with amphetamine (0.3 mg/kg). This effect became more marked with age, i.e., being more significant after 16 to 18 days of age (P〈0.005) than before (P〈0.05). These increases in the intensity of the effect during growth may be related to the postnatal development of the structures responsible for wakefulness. 3. Percent time of “activated” sleep was diminished significantly at all ages including the newborns (P〈0.005). This lack of the influence of age suggests that the structures responsible for “activated” sleep are well developed at birth. 4. The increase of percent time of slow wave sleep was observed. This increase is regarded as a “passive” manifestation of time left available after a severe diminution of “activated” sleep time and relatively slight increase of wakefulness time during amphetamine medication.

    Notes: Summary This experiment investigated the possibility that chlordiazepoxide (CDP) has unique properties that account for state dependent learning, and prevention of conflict-induced behavior fixations. One group of rats were given a discrimination problem on a Lashley jumping stand, but on even days all responses were punished. Another group were treated the same way except than on even days all responses were rewarded. Each of these groups were subdivided, half of the Ss were given CDP on even days, the other half no drug. The results showed that punishment on even days for the response to be learned disrupted learning more than reward for responses that were to be avoided. CDP practically eliminated these disruptive effects and aided learning for the punishment group, but led to a slower rate of learning for the reward group. These findings confirmed the hypothesis that CDP attenuates the effects of negative incentives, and that this property accounts for the drug's cue value in discrimination learning and for its fixation prevention characteristics.

    Notes: Summary Atropine or scopolamine improved conditioned avoidance behavior for most rats which performed poorly, in spite of extensive training, in a shuttle-box procedure. As previously reported, d-amphetamine also improved performance in many of these animals, but there was no particular relationship between a rat's responses to the cholinergic blocking agents and to d-amphetamine. The effect of any one of the 3 agents was, for the most part, reversible after the drug effect had dissipated. Physostigmine was quite potent in disrupting avoidance behavior in rats that performed well in the shuttle-box, even in animals that were overtrained. This impairment was antagonized by atropine or scopolamine, partly antagonized by d-amphetamine, and not antagonized by methyl atropine. Poor performers were found to be very sensitive to the disruptive effects of physostigmine, losing much of their escape behavior after relatively small doses. The results are interpreted as evidence for a central cholinergic system with inhibitory influences for modulating stimulus-response patterns. Under normal circumstances this inhibitory system probably functions in an integrated manner with the adrenergic mobilizing system for the central control of learned behavior. Centrally-active anticholinergic drugs of the muscarinic type appear to influence behavioral responses by inducing a response disinhibition.

    Notes: Summary The rotarod test of motor coordination in mice was modified by increasing the rotation speed every 30 sec until the animals fell off. This procedure yielded a stable, proficient level of performance within four brief trials; the approximately normal distribution of performance times provided an equivalent measure of either improvement or impairment caused by drugs and permitted the use of parametric statistical tests. A total of 240 mice were assigned to 20 different groups of 12 each, administered oral doses of placebo or different drugs, prior to trial 4. The use of a ratio score (performance time in trial 4 divided by the same animal's time in trial 3) provided a measure of drug-induced changes, controlling for individual differences among animals in over-all level of performance. Two phenothiazines (chlorpromazine and perphenazine) impaired performance at low doses, with a progressively greater decrement at increasing doses (4, 8, 16 mg/kg); 2 barbiturates (pentobarbital and amobarbital) showed an all-or-none effect, with no significant decrement at the lower doses (20 and 40 mg/kg) but almost complete incapacitation at the highest dose of 80 mg/kg. Performance superior to the placebo condition was found with the 2 lower doses of pentobarbital and with 3 d-amphet-amine doses (4, 8, 16 mg/kg). An analysis of individual differences gave evidence that the animals which were inferior in prior performance were more susceptible to both improvement and impairment of performance under the influence of drugs.

    Notes: Summary Oxazepam has two opposing actions on behavior: a responsedecreasing or depressant action and a response-increasing or disinhibitory action. The course of the two actions in chronic dosing was determined in rats in a test in which punished and unpunished schedules of reinforcement were alternated. The depressant action (measured by a decrease in the rate of unpunished behavior) was observed to undergo tolerance after 3–4 doses, while the disinhibitory action (measured by an increase in the rate of punished behavior) failed to show tolerance and even increased throughout the chronic series. The selective tolerance of the depressant action is probably due to neuronal adaptation, but changes in metabolism also may be involved. The increase in the rate of punished behavior is attributed, at least in part, to a progressive unmasking of the disinhibitory action as tolerance to the depressive action develops.

    Notes: Summary CMA (p-chloro-N-methylamphetamine) lowers the cerebral 5-HT concentration in test animals but has virtually no effect on the catecholamine concentrations. Moreover, this compound was found to behave in depressive patients like an antidepressive drug, not like a central stimulant of the amphetmine type. The study described was conducted in order to establish whether CMA influences the overall metabolism of indoleamines in man. Such an influence was clearly demonstrable. Our findings are consistent with the hypothesis that CMA releases 5-HT from its depots. It has not been explained why a considerable proportion of the released 5-HT is excreted unchanged and why the increase in 5-HIAA excretion is so small: the overall activity of MAO was found not to be inhibited. No indications of abnormal 5-HT degradation were found at this time. Patients with vital depressions who improved on CMA medication showed a lower 5-HIAA excretion before treatment than did patients who were refractory to CMA treatment. This is consistent with earlier observations. The possible cause of this phenomenon is discussed. Among the various possibilities considered, an abnormal 5-HT metabolism is regarded as the most plausible. Pertinent investigations are being continued.

    Notes: Summary Rats of 3 strains were observed at regular intervals and their activity was recorded using four categories of behaviour-rearing, moving, grooming and immobile. Strain differences in control activity were found. Nicotine and physostigmine reduced the activity of the more active rats and increased that of the less active animals. Rearing behaviour was particularly susceptible to depression by both drugs. The similarity of effect of the two drugs supports the hypothesis that one of the actions of nicotine in the brain is the release of acetylcholine.

    Notes: Summary Measures of skilled motor performances, both of a task-oriented (tests of eye-hand coordination) and incidental (control of facial and ocular muscles) nature were recorded for a sample of 20 healthy young adults before and after single administrations of perphenazine, opipramol, imipramine and placebo at doselevels commonly supposed to produce mood or behavioral effects. It was anticipated that such performances would be sensitive even to slight changes in the subjects' physiological and psychological state; the aim was to test the power of tests of subtle skills in providing indices of slight to moderate behavioral effects. The performance measures remained surprisingly little affected by all drugs, despite their sensitivity to drug-independent improvement in performance throughout the experimental day, and despite evidences of drug-related effects, especially for imipramine and opipramol, in simple objective physiological measures, and for imipramine alone in subjective measures taken concurrently. There may be a class of skilled sensory-motor acts, particularly those related to well-learned daily activities, which, rather than being vulnerable to adverse effect, remain efficient even in the presence of signs of disturbance of bodily function.

    Notes: Summary Using climbing rope and bar-pressing behavior methods, rats were rendered tolerant to Δ 9-THC, cannabis extract, mescaline and LSD-25. Cross-tolerance experiments showed that rats refractory to Δ 9-THC and cannabis extract were still sensitive to mescaline and LSD-25, and vice-versa. These results suggest that, in spite of the similarity of the clinical symptoms produced in man by the 3 drugs, Δ 9-THC may have its psychotomimetic effects produced by different mechanisms from those of LSD-25 and mescaline.

    Notes: Summary We have studied the interactions of reserpine and the monoamine oxidase inhibitors, nialamide and isocarboxazid, in rabbits. EEG recordings were made from animals with acute and chronically implanted electrodes. Gross behavioral observations were made in freely moving rabbits and brain amine concentrations of norepinephrine and serotonin were also determined. Emphasis was placed on observing drug effects over periods of time ranging up to 13 days. Rabbits given isocarboxazid or nialamide alone exhibit a phenomenon rarely seen in the control animals, namely partial activation, an EEG pattern in which slow waves of high amplitude are maintained in the cortex while fast activity appears in subcortical structures. This effect was also observed in rabbits treated with nialamide and reserpine in combination. By appropriate dosage schedules in which reserpine was administered to animals pretreated with monoamine oxidase inhibitors it was possible to maintain extended periods of frank arousal or EEG activation over a period of several days. The absolute concentrations of brain amines bore little or no relationship to the EEG effects observed, however, increased ratios of serotonin to norepinephrine were observed in conjunction with EEG activation and signs of behavioral excitement.

    Notes: The influence of dyes on the gelation of ferric hydroxide sol has been studied with the help of viscometric, pH metric and cataphoretic methods. From these studies it has been concluded that out of the four dyes it is only alizarin sulphonic acid which brings about appreciable change in the above physical properties. The results have been interpreted in terms of structural changes in the dye molecule. Positive adsorption is found to take place in all cases except malachite green which is negatively adsorbed on the gel. In the case of alizarin sulphonic acid the adsorption data do not fit in well either in Langmuir or Freundlich adsorption isotherms.

    Notes: Conductometric titrations of mercury (II) perchlorate in presence of glycolic acid, hippuric acid, malonic acid and succinic acid were carried out according to JOB's method of continuous variation. A reaction mixture contained X ml of the acid and (20 - X) ml of mercury (II) perchlorate, the two components being of equal molarity. The presence of only one but well-defined minimum in the plot of observed conductance versus X, for hippuric acid, oxalic acid, malonic acid and succinic acid showed that one complex of mercury (II) was formed in each case. The stoichiometry of the carboxylic acid complexes of mercury (II) was determined from the position of these minima and it was concluded that mercury (II) binds one hippurate, four oxalate the two malonate ions. The plot of observed conductance against X for glycolic acid, on the other hand, is characterized by the absence of any minimum and is in fact a straight line showing no interaction between mercury (II) and glycolate ion or an interaction too weak to be detectable by the presence method.Extending JOB's approach to conductometric data an attempt was made to derive quantitative expressions for the association constant of mercury (II) - carboxylic acid systems. The magnitude of association constants thus calculated showed that the carboxylic acids combined with mercury (II) with a decrease in free energy of about 5-6 kcalories/mole and that malonate is more effective than hippurate in binding mercuric ion.

Potentiometric titrations of uranyl nitrate with caustic potash in presence of catechol exhibited a sharp inflexion at 2⅔ moles of alkali der mole of the metal ion. Equilibrium constant of the reaction: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \rm{2UO}_2^{2 + } + 2\rm{H}_2 \rm{A} \rightleftharpoons \left({\rm{UO}_2 \rm{A}_2 } \right)_{\rm2} + 4\rm{H}^ + . $$\end{document} has been found to be 1.00·10-10. The binuclear chelate species have been found to polymerize further through hydrolytic reactions.

    Notes: Bei der Kondensation von Aldehyden mit 2,4-Diamino-2-methylpentan, 2-Methylamino-4-amino-2-methylpentan und 2,4-Bis-(methylamino)-2-methylpentan werden Hexahydropyrimidine gebildet. Kondensationen von Ketonen mit 2,4-Diamino-2-methylpentan führen in Abhängigkeit von der Struktur der Ketone zu Hexahydropyrimidin-Derivaten oder Ketiminen bzw. Gemischen beider Verbindungstypen. Mit 2-Methylamino-4-amino-2-methylpentan und Ketonen werden ausschließlich Ketimine erhalten, während mit einigen Ketonen und 2,4-Bis-(methylamino)-2-methylpentan Hexahydropyrimidin-Derivate zugänglich sind. Aus 2-Dimethylamino-4-amino-2-methylpentan und Ketonen werden Ketimine gewonnen. Die Kondensationsreaktionen können durch Zusatz von Ammoniumsalzen, HCl oder Verwendung solcher Lösungsmittel, die die teilweise Bildung von Hydrochloriden der eingesetzten Diamine ermöglichen, stark beschleunigt werden.

Mit Formaldehyd und primären Aminen liefert I 1,2-Bis-[5′(5′-nitro-1′,3′-dialkyl-hexahydro-pyrimidyl)]-äthane (III) und 1,2-Bis-[5′(5′-nitro-3′-alkyl-tetrahydro-1′,3′-oxazinyl)]-äthane (IV).

Hydroxy-benzile reagieren nicht mit Harnstoff. Methoxy-benzile ergeben unter vergleichbaren Bedingungen,aber in Abwesenheit von Harnstoff, Methoxy-benzoesäuren. Der Reaktionsmechanismus wird diskutiert.

    Notes: Bei den meisten sekundären Hydroperoxiden verläuft die Zersetzung in Gegenwart von Basen nicht einheitlich, neben Ketonen entstehen auch die entsprechenden Alkohole. Die Zersetzung sekundärer und tertiärer Hydroperoxide wird durch Basen beschleunigt; die Reaktionsgeschwindigkeiten sind sehr schlecht reproduzierbar, und sie werden durch Zusatz von Äthylendiamintetraessigsäure stark herabgesetzt. Offenbar verläuft die Hydroperoxidzersetzung in Gegenwart von Basen meist nach einem radikalischen Mechanismus, wobei Spuren von Schwermetallionen als Katalysator wirken, während die Basen nur Cokatalysatoren sind. Abweichend vom allgemeinen Fall läßt sich bei Tetralin- und Äthylbenzolhydroperoxid eine ionoide Zersetzung nach einem E2-Mechanismus nachweisen. Für die durch Natronlauge katalysierte Zersetzung von α-deuteriertem Tetralinhydroperoxid wurde ein kinetischer Isotopieefekt kH:kD = 3,9 gefunden.

Die aus den 3-(β-Hydroxy-äthoxy)-1,2,4-triazolen leicht herstellbaren 3-(β-Halogen-äthoxy)-1,2,4-triazole unterliegen unter bestimmten Bedingungen einer innermolekularen Umwandlung. Es bilden sich die 4-(β-Halogen-äthyl)-1,2,4-triazolone-(3).

Aus den maximalen Autoxydationsgeschwindigkeiten wurden folgende primäre kinetische Brutto-Isotopieeffekte bei 61 °C bestimmt: Es wird versucht, den Gang der Isotopieeffekte innerhalb der quasihomologen Reihe mit der Annahme unterschiedlicher energetischer Verhältnisse im Übergangszustand der Reaktionen zu deuten.

    Notes: Es wird über das Verhalten von Äthylaluminiumsesquichlorid, Triäthylaluminium und Diäthylaluminiumhydrid gegenüber Methylenchlorid, Chloroform und Tetrachlorkohlenstoff unter verschiedenen Reaktionsbedingungen berichtet.Methylenchlorid und Chloroform werden durch Äthylaluminiumsesquichlorid nicht angegriffen, durch Triäthylaluminium langsam enthalogeniert. Dagegen reagiert Tetrachlorkohlenstoff sehr heftig mit den ersten beiden Äthylaluminium-Verbindungen und führt zu Explosionen. Methylenchlorid eignet sich sehr gut als Lösungsmittel für aluminiumorganische Synthesen, wie bei der Darstellung von Ketonen aus Säurechloriden mit Hilfe von Äthylaluminiumsesquichlorid gezeigt wird.

    Notes: Iron(III) forms in the aqueous medium a green complex with 8-hydroxy quinoline 7-sulfonic acid with maximum absorbence at 610 mμ, stable in the pH range 3-4. The composition of the complex as established by three different methods spectrophotometrically is Fe(III) EHQS (where EHQS is the abreviation used for 8-hydroxy quinoline 7-sulfonic acid). The stability constant calculated by the methods of BANERJI and DEY (1) and themole-ratio method (2) was found to be log K = 3.8 ± 0.05 at 25°C and the heat of formation was found to be = -5.24 k. cal/mole at 25°C.

    Notes: Spectrophotometric study of the colour reaction of sodium salt of 3 hydroxy-4-((-2-hydroxy-1-naphthyl)azo)-1-naphthalene sulfonic acid (SDB) with gallium and Indium is described for the determination of micromaounts of gallium and indium. The absorbance curves of the complexes at pH 3.0 show λ max of SDB alone at 550 mμ while for ga-chelate λ max is 580 mμ and for In-chelate it is 570 mμ. The study was made at 590 mμ where the reagent absorbs very little. The optimum conditions for the microdetermination of gallium and indium using this reagent have been described and include the effect of pH on colour intensity of chelate, effect of excess of reagent, range of adherence to BEER'S law, sensitivity, molar absorption coefficient, rate of colour formation and stability of colour at room temperature. The effects of various diverse ions have also been studied and it was found that many ions do not interfere in the spectrophotometric determination of Gallium and Indium using SDB.

    Notes: Das UV-Spektrum des Hexamycins besitzt Maxima bei 336, 356 und 376 nm. Im IR-Spektrum ist die typische Bande der Makrolid-Polyenantibiotika bei 1712 cm-1 enthalten. Der Schmelzpunkt beträgt 120-125°C, das Äquivalentgewicht 824, die Molmasse liegt zwischen 700 und 800. Hexamycin ist in polaren organischen Lösungsmitteln löslich und unlöslich in Wasser und nicht polaren Lösungsmitteln. Lösungen der Substanz verlieren ihre antibiotische Aktivität sowohl durch Erhitzen als auch bei längerem Stehen. Von 21 geprüften Mikroorganismen, vorwiegend Pilze, werden weit über die Hälfte durch 2-32 μg/ml gehemmt. Der Einfluß des Hexamycins auf die Polyphenoloxydase- und Peroxydaseaktivität ist gering. Die Atmung von Saccharomyces cerevisiae Hansen wird durch Hexamycin beträchtlich gemindert.

    Notes: High frequency ultrasonic waves of frequency 1 Mc/s. have been employed to study the decolourization of dilute aqueous solution of crystal violet. The process is irreversible and the kinetic study shows it to be unimolecular one. The deaeration of the solution by nitrogen does not affect the rate of the decolourization. The addition of certain substances such as alcohol, acetone, ether, glycerine, dioxan and allylthiourea inhibits the decolourization to a considerable extent. Oxidation and subsequent destruction of the dye molecule has been found to be the cause of the fading of the dye solution.

    Notes: 2α, 3α- und 2β, 3β- Benzoylimino-cholestan werden durch Natriumjodid in siedendem Aceton zu 2′-Phenyl-(2α, 3α)-oxazolino-[5′, 4′:2, 3]-cholestan bzw. 2′-Phenyl-(2β, 3β)-oxazolino-[5′, 4′:3, 2]-cholestan umgelagert. Mit Bortrifluoridätherat in absolutem Äther bildet 2α, 3α-Benzoylimino-cholestan ebenfalls 2′-Phenyl-(2α, 3α)-oxazolino-[5′, 4′:2, 3]-cholestan. Dagegen erfolgt durch verdünnte Schwefelsäure oder Pikrinsäure in Aceton sowie durch Benzoesäureanhydrid oder Pikrinsäure in Alkohol Ringöffnung zu 2-Hydroxybzw. Alkoxybenzamiden. Die Ringschlußreaktion des diaxialen 2β-Chlor-3α-benzaminocholestan führt mit Natriumhydrogenkarbonat zum Oxazolin, während mit Kaliumhydroxid 2α, 3α-Imino-cholestan entsteht.

    Notes: Durch kinetische Untersuchungen der Oxiranringöffnung mit Hilfe von Modellsubstanzen wird gefunden, daß die sterische Behinderung der Epoxidgruppe am Bicycloheptanring von Dicyclopentadien-dioxid bei der Reaktion mit Halogenwasserstoff in Dioxan nicht auf die Endomethylengruppe, sondern auf das während der Reaktion primär gebildete Halogenhydrin am Cyclopentanring zurückzuführen ist.Der starke Unterschied in der Reaktivität von HCl und HBr bei der Oxiranringöffnung von Dicyclopentadiendioxid in wasserfreiem bzw. wasserhaltigem Dioxan findet seine Erklärung in unterschiedlicher Protonenkonzentration des Reaktionsmediums. H0-Messungen mit verschiedenen Indikatoren liefern für HBr-Dioxan-Lösungen stets niedrigere H0-Werte als für entsprechende HCl-Dioxan-Lösungen.

Langkettige α,ω-Dihalogenalkane setzen sich analog zu den entsprechenden Polyharnstoffen um. Sekundäre Alkylhalogenide lassen sich mit schlechteren Ausbeuten in verzweigte N,N′-Dialkylharnstoffe überführen. Die als Zwischenprodukte zu erwartenden Alkylisocyanate konnten isoliert werden.

    Notes: The formation of a red coloured chelate between divalent cobalt and tri sodium salt of sulpho-dichlorohydroxy dimethyl fuchson dicarboxylic acid (CAS) with λmax at 450 mμ has been reported. The composition of the chelate employing spectrophotometric method has been determined by the continuous variation, mole ratio and slope ratio methods. The chelate has a composition corresponding to Co(CAS)2 and is stable between the pH range 10.5 to 11.5. Stability constant of the chelate has been found to be (log K = 8.00) involving a free energy change of formation ΔG° = -11.0 K cals.

    Notes: Cobalt ferrocyanide sol was prepared and the relation between electrolyte concentration and time of coagulation was studied with KCl, NaCl, NH4Cl, BaCl2 and AlCl3 in the light of BHATTACHARYA'S equation by employing light extinction technique. Different concentrations of the electrolyte were added and times for a particular stage of coagulation given by the same extinction value were graphically determined.     Notes: Co-ordination complexes between Copper (II) benzoate and ammonia, some diphatic and aromatic amines and a few diamines have been prepared. The molecular formulae on the basis of percentages of constituent elements are Cu(benzoate)2(amines)2 and Cu(benzoate)2-(amine). Conductivity measurements in formamide, nitrobenzene and water indicate the complexes to be non-electrolytes and hence it is suggested that the benzoate ions are also co-ordinated. Molecular weight measurements in the same solvents confirm this. Visible absorption measurements show a single band in the 600-900 mμ region of the spectrum.

    Notes: Für die Bestimmung von Zink in Pflanzensubstanzen eignen sich absorptionsflammen-photometrische und polarographische Methoden.Mit den zur Verfügung stehenden Gerätekombinationen konnten Messungen im Bereich von 1-5 μg Zn/ml bzw. 1-25 μg Zn/ml Meßlösung vorgenommen werden. Die Streubereiche betragen ±3,17 ppm bzw. ±3,25 ppm. Für die polarographische Bestimmung müssen störendes Phosphat und Sulfat durch Passage einer Kationenaustauschersäule abgetrennt werden. Die absorptionsflammenphotometrische Bestimmung wird durch die in Pflanzenproben vorliegenden Anionen und Kationen nicht gestört, sofern die Messung in 0,1 n HCl erfolgt. Für serienmäßige Arbeiten eignet sich das letztgenannte Verfahren besser, da mit dem polarographischen Verfahren bei gleicher Aufschlußprozedur nur die Hälfte an Bestimmungen geschafft wird. Dagegen ergibt sich bei diesem die Möglichkeit, in geringen Meßlösungsmengen von 0,5 ml zu messen. Die atomabsorptionsphotometrische Methode benötigt mindestens 3 ml Meßlösung.

    Notes: Monoalkylhydrazine werden erhalten, indem man in wäßriger Lösung Cyclohexanon nd ein Alkylamin mit Hydroxylamin-O-sulfonsäure zu einem 1-alkyl-3,3-pentamethylendiaziridin umsetzt und dieses nach Extraktion mit Toluol ohne Isolierung zu Monoalkylhydrazin und Cyclohexanon hydrolysiert. Durch Umsetzung von Monoalkylhydrazinen mit Kaliumcyanat zu 2-Alkyl-semicarbaziden und deren Fällung mit p-Nitrobenzaldehyd lassen sich gut kristallisierende Derivate herstellen. Durch Aminierung mit Hydroxylamin O—N-disulfonsäure werden Monoalkylhydrazine zu Stickstoff und zum entsprechenden Alkan abgebaut; letzteres wird gaschromatographisch identifiziert.

Während die Knüpfung neuer C—O- oder von C—S-Bindungen nach Austritt der Arylsulfonyloxy-Gruppe am C-5′ prinzipiell möglich ist, wird bei Versuchen zur Knüpfung einer C—C-Bindung am C-5′ mit Kaliumcyanid O2,5′-Cyclo-thymidin erhalten. Mit Ammoniak reagieren die 5′-O-Arylsulfonyl-thymidine über O2,5′-Cyclothymidin zu 1-(2′-Desoxyribofuranosyl)-5-methyl-isocytosin und 5-Methylisocytosin.

    Notes: Der Hexamycinbildner 4/122 gehört zur Gattung Streptomyces. Für die Fermentation erwies sich ein Nährmedium mit Sojabohnenmehl am geeignetsten. Das Hexaenantibiotikum wurde aus dem Myzel mit Methanol und aus dem Kulturfiltrat mit n-Butanol extrahiert. Nach Abtrennen eines „ätherlöslichen Antibiotikums“ wurde das Rohprodukt mit Wasser extrahiert und durch Craig-Verteilung im System n-Propanol-Äther-Wasser (1:3:3) gereinigt. Lyophilisation aus tert.-Amylalkohol führte zu einer gelben, amorphen. Substanz.

    Notes: The structure of (i) NaHg(CN)2(Cl)(H2O), (ii) NaHg(CN)2(Br)(H2O), (iii) NaHg(CN)2(CNS)(H2O), (iv) KHg(CN)2(Br) and (v) KHg(CN)2(CNS) has been studied by infrared spectroscopy. The structure of the anions of I, III and V complexes have been derived on the basis of characteristic absorption frequencies and other known properties and of II and IV on the basis of analogy as the CN groups in these complexes are infrared inactive. CN in these anions are linked as cyanide groups and SCN as isothiocyanate group in V. In III SCN is present both as thiocyanate and isothiocyanate group. III is monomeric with water as a coordinating group. In I and II water is not expected to be a ligand to Hg. Anions of I, II, IV and V are predominantly dimeric with CN as bridging group in the first three and SCN in V.

Methods are also given for the determination of boron and sulfide, found as impurities, in the electrodeposited nickel.

    Notes: Visible absorption spectra of Nickel (II) sulphate and various aliphatic amines were analysed, in order to extract information regarding each of amine Nickel (II) complex. The presence of six different complexes i.e., mono, di, tri, tetra, penta and hexamines have been indicated by the shift of absorption maxima for these. The energy changes of complexes due to exchange of water ligands with amines have been calculated and an interpretation is offered for this shift in the observed position of absorption maxima.

    Notes: A rapid amperometric method for the determination of vanadium (V) has been described which involves titration of vanadium (V) as sodium orthovanadate against copper sulphate solution at Ede = - 0.20 V (vs S.C.E.). The accuracy and reproducability of the method is excellent particularly at higher temperature i.e. at 60°C. The method permits the determination of vanadium (V) down to 0.2 mM with an accuracy 1.0%).

    Notes: Three hexaco-ordinated complexes of nickel (II) acetate with ammonia, ethylenediamine and propylenediamine have been prepared. Conductivity measurements indicate the complexes to be non-electrolytes. Molecular weight measurements confirm this. The visible absorption spectrophotometric measurements show a number of bands corresponding to the various permitted transitions of the metal and a discussion of the structure in the light of these transitions is presented.

    Notes: Some complexes of cerium (IV) sulphate with ammonia and primary aliphatic amines have been prepared. The molecular formulae on the basis of analysis turn out to be Ce(SO4)2 · 4 amine. The complexes behave as electrolytes. The absorption spectra have been recorded and an interpretation is offered for possible transitions.Lanthanides, and cerium in particular are receiving special attention these days. A number of complexes of latter with various ligands and anions have been reported1-5). In the present paper some complexes of cerium (IV) sulphate with ammonia, methyl, ethyl, propyl and butylamine are being presented.

    Notes: Some substituted sulphonamides have been cyanoethylated and they were subjected to reduction. On hydrolysis with aqueous and alcoholic sodium hydroxide the cyanoethylated sulphonamides gave decyanoethylated products identical to the original sulphonamides.

    Notes: Some molecular addition compounds of cobalt (II) oxalate with primary aliphatic amines have been prepared. The general molecular formula on the basis of analysis of constituent elements turn out to be CoC2O4 · RNH2. The formation of compounds is independent of the excess amine concentration. The compounds behave as electrolytes. The molecular weight measurements and VAN'T HOFF factor “i” also confirm this fact.
