Notes: We have analysed ring-width records of two Miocene coniferous trees with an absolute age of 15–20 million years. Such data may reflect solar periodicities from the prehistoric past. Evidence for a main period of ∼ 12.5 years has been found. This is near the present basic solar activity period of ∼ 11 years. Other periodic components appear at 220, 150 and 53 years, respectively, which may also be related to solar variations.

Notes: The goal of this study was to compare the lateral inhibition and the habituation in the human auditory cortex, two important physiological effects during auditory processing that can be reliably measured by means of magnetoencephalography when recording auditory evoked fields. Applying 40-Hz amplitude-modulated stimuli allowed us to record simultaneously the slow transient evoked and the steady-state fields and thus to characterize the lateral inhibition and the habituation effect in primary and non-primary auditory cortical structures. The main finding of the study is that the lateral inhibition effect of non-primary auditory areas as measured on the major component of the slow transient auditory evoked field (N1) is significantly stronger than the corresponding habituation effect. By contrast, this effect was not observed for the 40-Hz steady-state fields, characterizing the activation of the primary auditory cortex in humans. The results might be interpreted as (i) evidence that the inhibition mediated by lateral connections is stronger than the habituation of excitatory neurons in the non-primary auditory cortex and (ii) the processing hierarchy in the human auditory cortex is demonstrated by the different behaviour of lateral inhibition and habituation in primary and non-primary auditory cortical structures.

Notes: The nasal mucociliary clearance is an important defense mechanism of the upper respiratory tract. It is known to be influenced by many pharmacologic substances. We investigated the effects of three topical intranasal antiallergic formulations containing disodium cromoglycate (DNCG), dimethindene maleate (DMM), and azelastine-HCL (AZL) on nasal ciliary beat frequency (CBF) in vitro. Nasal ciliated cells were harvested from 16 healthy volunteers. Cells were diluted 1:10 in culture medium and incubated with a placebo formulation (PLAC), containing 0,022% benzalkonium chloride, which was part of all formulations, a registered 2% formulation of DNCG, a 0.1% formulation of DMM, and a registered 0.1% formulation of AZL. After an incubation period of 20 min, CBF was registered by a photoelectric measurement device. Under control conditions (CONTROL), CBF was 11 4±1 3 Hz. PLAC reduced CBF to 9.7±2.3 Hz (NS). DNCG reduced CBF t o 9.7±2 Hz (NS). DMM reduced CBF to 7.2+1.7 Hz F〈0.O5 vs CONTROL, NS vs PLAC), and AZL reduced CBF to 0.9+1.8 Hz P ≤ 0.05 vs CONTROL, P ≤ O.001 vs DNCG, P 〈 0.001 vs PLAC). In conclusion, a possible influence of antiallergic intranasal formulations on nasal ciliary function has to be considered in clinical application.

Notes: Abstract In 24 cases scutiform polytetrafluoroethylene patches were implanted to correct saddle malformation and irregularities of the nasal dorsum. For smaller tissue defects of the nasal bone and cartilage, the patches are very suitable in rhinosurgery. One of the advantages of the implant is that it makes the reconstructed area appear as natural as possible.

Notes: Summary A retrospective study of 4271 surgical specimens from the thyroid gland revealed 2 morphologically benign and 6 obviously malignant clear-cell tumors. In one case, origin of the carcinoma from the thyroid gland was proven by autopsy, and another case was classified as clear-cell carcinoma of the thyroid gland because its metastases took up radioiodine. In two cases thyroid nodules were believed to be late metastases from clear-cell carcinomas of the kidney operated on some time before. In two other cases a carcinoma of the kidney was detected after extirpation of the thyroid nodules. According to morphological criteria two cases were classified as clear-cell adenomas. This rare variant of thyroid tumor is not generally considered to be benign and remains open to discussion. Clear-cell adenoma of the thyroid gland does not contain lipids or glycogen in neoplastic cells, but exhibits a characteristic ultrastructure. The cytoplasm is filled with smooth surfaced empty vesicles which are believed to derive from the Golgi apparatus. Vesicular degeneration of the cytoplasm seems to be responsible for the clear aspect of the tumor cells in histological examination. Thus the thyroid clear cell seems to be a very rare but characteristic element in neoplasia of the follicular epithelium, and might be analogous to the oxyphil cell. Criteria for the diagnostic differentiation and problems of the different clear-cell tumors of the thyroid gland are discussed.
