Notes: Dynamic response of strip footings resting on a soil medium, idealized as an elastic halfspace, is obtained using the finite element discretization technique with constant strain rectangular elements consisting of 4CST elements. Boundary stresses have been computed using a combination of Rayleigh wave absorbing boundaries (RAB) and standard vicous boundaries (SVB). The influences of contact pressure distributions at the footing - soil interface, mass and frequency ratios on the dynamic response of a strip footing are studied. Effects of embedment, static surcharge, nonhomogeneity and nonlinear constitutive relations are shown. Results are compared with the existing solution and are presented graphically.

Notes: Two properties of hybrid element method for diffraction and radiation of water waves are examined. For long waves in shallow water the method is shown to give a unique solution for all frequencies. Thus, unlike several other known methods, there are no irregular frequencies for which the approximating matrix equation is singluar. For a sea of arbitrary depth, it is shown that all known global identities such as reciprocity and energy theorems are preserved by the discrete solution. Thus, satisfaction of these identities by the numerical solution is only a necessary but by no means sufficient condition for accuracy.

Notes: Several examples are presented to illustrate how standard finite differnce schemes for the wave eqation (e.g. Lax-Wendroff, Leafrog, etc.) can be developed from finite element analysis. The development of the diffrence schemes from the element schemes is made possible by using Galerkin's method on both the spacial and temporal dimensions.

Notes: The use of local mesh refinements for the generation of meshes for the finite element or finite difference methods is studied. A class of rectangular meshes which admit restricted local refinements, referred to as irregular rectangular meshes, is introduced and its representation discussed. Properties of algorithms for mesh refinements are discussed from the viewpoints of termination with a mesh in the specified class, memory utilization, symmetry and fragmentation of the mesh.

Notes: Transform methods for the interpolation of regularly spaced data are described, based on fast evaluation using discrete Fourier transforms. For periodic data adequately sampled, the fast Fourier transform (FFT) is used directly. With undersampled or aperiodic data, a Chebyshev interpolating polynomial is evaluated by means of the FFT to provide minimum deviation and distributed ripple. The merits of two kinds of Chebyshev series are compared. All the methods described produce an interpolation passing directly through the given values and are applied easily to the multi-dimensional case.

Notes: The superconvergent property of the discrete solution to certain one-dimensional problems is examined in the context of the weighted residual difference equations and their conservation properties. The difference equations are shown to satisfy the differential equation exactly at nodes and reproduce the derivatives at boundary nodes. The exact values for the first derivative at interior nodes follow from the conservation property when applied locally.

Notes: The stiffness-derivative method of Parks1 for calculating the linear elastic crack tip stress intensity factor for any symmetric crack configuration and a particular loading is extended to calculate the weight function vector field2,3 which serves as a Green's function for the stress intensity factor. The method, which combines the observations of Rice3 on the weight function and of Zienkiewicz4 on the differential stiffness method, permits very efficient determination of the weight function, requiring only one additional back-substitution on the already-factored stiffness matrix. Thus, the stress intensity factor for arbitrary loading of this configuration can subsequently be determined by quadrature alone. The promising extension of the method to three-dimensional configurations is outlined. While this manuscript was under review, the authors became aware of the recent work of Vanderglas,21 in which the same approach as ours is used to extend the stiffness derivative method. The present work was then voluntarily revised in order to address further certain aspects of the topic of shape function perturbation, which Vanderglas noted.

Notes: Transient heat conduction in a composite slab is investigated in the present work by using the orthogonal collocation method. The present numerical method is found to be quite efficient and highly stable even for the power-type temperature dependence of thermal conductivity which often cuases severe computational instability to many numerical methods.

Notes: This paper is mainly concerned with a new structural optimization method based upon the concept of duality in convex programming. This rigorous formulation permits justification of many intuitive procedures which are used in the classical optimality criteria approaches. Furthermore, the dual algorithms proposed in this paper do not suffer from the drawbacks inherent to the optimality criteria approach. The selection of the set of active constraints does not introduce any difficulty and is achieved correctly in all cases. The subdivision of the design variables in an active and passive group is intrinsically contained in the dual formulation. The efficiency of the dual algorithms is shown with reference to some problems for which the classical methods do not lead to satisfactory results.

Notes: Several types of smoothing technique are considered which generate continuous approximation (i.e. nodal values) for vorticity and pressure from finite element solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations using quadrilateral elements. The simpler schemes are based on combinations of linear extrapolation and/or averaging algorithms which convert elementwise. Gauss point values to nodal point values. More complicated schemes, based on a global smoothing technique which employ the mass matrix (consistent or lumped), are also presented. An initial assessment of the accuracy of the several schemes is obtained by comparing the approximate vorticities with an analytical function. Next, qualitative vorticity comparisons are made from numerical solutions of the steady-state driven cavity problem. Finally, applications of smoothing techniques to discontinuous pressure fields are demonstrated.

Notes: Earlier publications demonstrated the capability of the EPIC-3 code to perform high velocity impact computations in three dimensions.1,2 These capabilities were demonstrated with simplified material and sliding surface models in a core-contained computer program. This paper presents recent developments which include more comprehensive material and sliding surface formulations, and an expanded computer program which can handle problems of unlimited size by beffering data between disc files and core. The EPIC-3 code is based on an explicit, finite element, Lagrangian formulation which uses constant strain tetrahedral elements.

Notes: A finite element analysis technique for an arbitrarily laminated anisotropic plate is described. A superparametric quadratic plate element with five degrees-of-freedom per node is used in the analysis. A stress-strain relation is derived from a three-dimensional approach to the problem. The volume integration of the stiffness matrix is evaluated by numerical integration using the Gauss quadrature formula with 2 × 2 × 2 sampling points. A variety of laminated plate problems is solved and the results are compared with the exact solutions, which demonstrate the validity of the method.

Notes: A new finite element technique for two-dimensional viscous incompressible fluid flow problems is presented in this paper. The vorticity transport equation is integrated in a small control volume, which results in the conservation law of vorticity. The finite element technique is applied to this equation together with the continuity equation, where simple linear triangular elements with three nodes are used for the formulation. Resulting sets of algebraic equations are solved by the use of a kind of relaxation method. Numerical results for viscous flow past a cavity show good agreement with experimental results.

Notes: An implementation of the Ahmad Thick Shell element using vector manipulation, reduced integration and the incorporation of the missing term in the approximating polynomial is presented. The first two aspects are merely applications. The theory is presented elsewhere6,7,11,18 and will not be repeated for the sake of conciseness. The third aspect was achieved by adding to the original nodal configuration a central node having only one degree-of-freedom. That node is then eliminated to preserve the original number of degrees-of-freedom.The Ahmad thick shell element is adequately presented in finite element literature.1-3 The co-ordinate definition and the displacement field are retained and will not be dealt with henceforth. However, a different concept of the strain definition due to Irons is used and the bending terms are included in the modulus matrix. The element like all second generation isoparametric elements is easily implemented through a shape function subroutine suitable for quadrilaterals. It reproduces exactly rigid body motion for any combination of elements of any geometry even for elements withcurved sides and variable thickness. Although Ahmad's thick shell element passed the patch test for unequal parallelograms but not for quadrilaterals the version presented passes that test for quadrilaterals. In spite of its credentials, the new version denoted by A has a major setback. the presence of one too many spurious mechanism is reported.

Notes: A method by which the numerical difficulties that one encounters while attempting to solve the differential equations which describe a diffusion flame can be circumvented is the quasi-linearization technique. Application of this method in conjunction with difference approximations transforms the equations into tri-diagonal matrices which can be inverted by the Thomas method. Since this is an iterative method initial profiles are generated by employing Burke-Schumann kinetics. This method is found to be superior to the marching techiques that are frequently used in the analyses of diffusion flames.

Notes: A series of open-type elements which are compatible with axisymmetric thin shell elements have been dervied. These elements allow the effects of intermediate openings and discrete support systems for rotational shells to be realistically modelled in the dynamic regime. Also, consistent load vectors for several common cases are derived. The availablility of these elements in a public domain computer program enhances the possibility for modelling systems which are basically axisymmetric but which include intermediate or end supports using a rotational shell code.

Notes: A simple, efficient and versatile finite element is introduced for shell applications. The element is developed based on a degeneration concept, in which the displacements and rotations of the shell mid-surface are independent variables. Bilinear functions are employed in conjunction with a reduced integration for the transverse shear energy. Several examples are tested to demonstrate the effectiveness and versatility of the element. The numerical results indicate that the shell element performs accurately for both thick and thin shell situations.

Notes: Abel's integral equation is the governing equation for certain problems in physics and engineering, such as radiation from distributed sources. The finite element method for the soultion of this non-linear equation is presented for problems with cylindrical symmetry and the extension to more general integral equations is indicated. The technique was applied to an axisymmetric glow discharge problem and the results show excellent agreement with previously obtained solutions.

Notes: The problem of non-radial loading (in the stress space) of structures of elastic-plastic metals is discussed. A concept of combined isotropic and kinematic hardening is proposed. For a material displaying such mixed hardening, constitutive equations are derived and incorporated in a finite element program for the analysis of elastic-plastic 2D-structures. When determining the numerical solution of the non-linear equations, the program enables the investigator to select an optimal combination of step by step and iteration procedures. The computed results are compared with experimental results and with results from calculations based on the overlay model, Reference 25.

Notes: A numerical method for the solution of the two dimensional Shockley-Poisson equation is presented and applied to the analysis of MOS devices. This SOR-Newton method is compared to Gummel's algorithm in two dimensions and shown to be more easily implemented. Application of the resulting code to interelectrode effects in charge coupled devices is given as an example.

Notes: A simple and accurate four-node quadrilateral plate-bending element based on stress assumptions is presented. Initial theremal strains and transverse shear stresses are included. The derivation is straightforward and without gimmicks and no numerical integration is necessary. The element behaves well for a wide range of aspect ratios with excellent convergence characteristics. The element is now being used in a practical warped configuration and with anisotropic material properties in the Lockheed-California Company NASTRAN system.

Notes: Two alternative numerical methods are presented, based on the assumed-stress hybrid finite element model and the initial-stress approach, for the elastic-plastic small-deflection analysis of structures under static loading. The use of the initial-stress approach results in a set of simultaneous linear algebraic incremental equations to be solved at each loading step, with the elastic stiffness matrix remaining unchanged throughout the loading process and the effects of plasticity included as equivalent element loads. The derivation of these alternative methods differs in the assigning of the incremental stress which satisfies equilibrium; in one case it is the actual stress increment while in the other it is a fictitious stress increment. An equilibrium imbalance correction is included in each of these methods to prevent drifting of the solution during the incremental process. Example solutions are presented which demonstrate the accuracy of the two methods and permit comparisons of the relative efficiencies of the two methods.

Notes: A family of 2-D and 3-D superparametric curved beam elements are introduced as a special form of general 2-D and 3-D isoparametric continuum elements. Each beam ‘subelement’ is rectangular incross section, however several elements may be offset and overlayed for the analysis of structural members of quite general section properties. A number of examples are presented in order to illustrate the validity and range of application of the element.

Notes: We present a new three-dimensional finite element, with the customary three displacement d.o.f. at each corner but no internal d.o.f. It passes the patch test and, for rectangular elemtents, exactly models pure bending. In numerical tests, the new element is found to be both accurate and efficient. It has the added advantage that its bending and twisting stiffnesses can be individually adjusted.

Notes: A finite element model is presented for the analysis of the thermal stress development in a body with temperature dependent material properties. The thermal model allows a change of phase to occur within the body and an elasto-viscoplastic constitutive relationship is used for the stress analysis. An example is given of the applicability of the technique to the analysis of continuous casting in metals.

Notes: The paper summarizes the formulation of a set of computer algorithms for the solution of the three-dimensional non-linear Poisson field problem. Results are presented that were obtained by applying algorithms to the analysis of two-dimensional magnetostatic fields. Scalar and vector potentials were used, and it is shown that the convenient single valued scalar potential associated with the induced sources gives severe accuracy problems in permeable regions. The results become as good as those obtained using vector potential if the scalar potential associated with the total field is used for permeable regions. The combination of two scalar potentials has a significant advantage for three-dimensional problems.

Notes: A general non-linear interpolation procedure for contouring on any isoparametric surface was presented in a previous article. The method used standard isoparametric interpolation functions and a predictor method for tracing element contour lines. The method presented here extends the previous work by using a predictor-corrector method to trace element contour lines, thereby making the contouring algorithm more accurate.

Notes: A stationary variational formulation of the necessary conditions for optimality is derived for an optimal control problem governed by a parabolic equation and mixed boundary conditions. Then a mixed finite element model with elements in space and time is utilized to solve a simple numerical example whose analytical and finite difference solutions are given elsewhere. Numerical results show that the proposed method with C° continuity elements constitutes a powerful numerical technique for solution of optimal control problems of distributed parameter systems.

Notes: The computational aspects are examined for the numerical analysis of inelastic structures and continua. In this context, the tracing of quasistatic and dynamic motions is considered with particular emphasis on the interaction of nonlinear and transient problems. In the first part, explicit and implicit solution schemes are developed for the numerical integration of inelastic first-order rte processes governing creep, viscoelasticity and viscoplasticity. In the second part, the exposition is extended to second-order inertial problems and in particular to the field of dynamic plasticity, devoting special attention to the kinematics of finite deformation problems.

Notes: A numerical method is presented for the determination of control temperatures to be applied to the surface of a steel ingot to induce a predetermined temperature distribution within the ingot. The one-dimensional case of an infinite plate is considered and the problem converted to one of static optimization which is then solved using a partial quadratic interpolation technique.

Notes: An algorithm has been developed which automatically calculates the time-dependent positions of points on the ablating boundaries of two-dimensional continuum structures with geometrially complex shapes. The structural boundary may consist of ablating and non-ablating parts. The initial ablating and non-ablating boundaries are defined by the disjoint union of piecewise linear arcs passing through a finite set of nodal points on the boundary, each defined by a pair of rectangular Cartesian co-ordinates. For a specified ablation rate, the algorithm calculates successive positions of the boundary points at times specifiec by the user. The algorithm is designed such that it may be easily incorporated, along with an automated mesh generation procedure, into existing finite element codes for transient thermal or stress analysis of structures with ablating boundaries. Two examples are presented from the field of solid rocket analysis.

Notes: A method of introducing general constraint equations into finite element matrix equations is described. The characteristics of the method are that it requires no reordering or condensation of the equations, no large matrix operations, and no increase in the number of unknowns. The method is suitable for application in minicomputer implementations of finite element analysis unless a large number of constraints is to be applied.

Notes: A new energy based finite difference analytical technique is introduced. The method incorporates certain energy concepts and the ability to use arbitrary, irregular meshes within the framework of the Finite Difference Method. This formulation reduces any governing partial differential equations to a set of difference equations containing partial derivatives up to and including the second order. Further, certain strong similarities with the popular Finite Element Method are shown and the ability to solve problems with irregular boundaries is discussed. To demonstrate the Finite Difference Energy Method several plate bending problems are solved.

Notes: A study of the application of the Finite Element Method to compressible potential flows, typified by the airfoil problem, is undertaken. Some novel approaches, believed to simplify solution techniques, are presented. The solutions use two pseudo-variational integrals, appropriate to subsonic flows, and possessing a physical iterative basis. With constant-derivatives triangular elements formulated for cylindrical co-ordinates, accurate solutions are easily obtained for the flow over a circular cylinder. For arbitrary airfoils a simple mapping is used to transform them into near circles. An appropriate mesh is then constructed in the mapped plane. The paper then presents two solution approaches by which this non-linear problem is solved in both the near circle plane and the airfoil plane.

Notes: A potentially powerful numerical method for solving certain boundary value problems is developed. The method combines the simplicity of orthogonal collocation with the versatility of deformable finite elements. Bicubic Hermite elements with four degrees-of-freedom per node are used. A subparametric transformation permits the precise positioning of the collocation points for maximum accuracy as well as a unique representation of irregular boundaries. It is shown that by taking advantage of the boundary conditions, a minimum number of collocation points can be used. The method is particularly suitable for potential and mass transport problems where a C1 continuous solution is required. In contrast to the Galerkin approach, it does not require the evaluation of basis function products and numerical integration, also the coefficient matrix contains only about half as many non-zero terms as the corresponding Galerkin coefficient matrix. This results in approximately a 90 per cent reduction in formulation and a 50 per cent reduction in solution operation, as compared with the Galerkin finite element method, for this type of problem. Examples show that the accuracy of the collocation solution is as good as or better than that of the Galerkin solution.

Notes: A general matrix formulation and mathematical programming techniques are used for the analysis of arch bridge structures in the inelastic range. Discretization of the structural model and of the constitutive laws of the material enables the solution of a number of engineering problems by a unified computer program. The capability of the method includes and limit load and deformation analysis, historical load-deformation analysis and shakedown load analysis. All these problmes but the last one are covered in the paper and are illustrated in the example of an actual reinforced concrete arch bridge with a stiffening girder.

Notes: The finite element method is used for the computation of the variational modes of the system composed of an elastic tank partially filled with a compressible liquied. We propose, on the one hand, a direct approcach based on a three field mixed variational formulation, and, on the other hand, a variational modal interaction scheme allowing the use of the acoustic eigenmodes of the liquid in a rigid motionless enclosure and the hydroelastic modes of the enclosure. Numerical results show the advantage of the second procedure.

Notes: This paper deals with the finite element calculation of the stress intensity faactors for plane extension and plate bending problems. On the basis of the plate theory including the effect of transverse shear deformation, the influences of plate thickness, crack length and plate width on the stress intensity faotors are investigated. The numeriacal analyses are carried out using the superposition method of analytical and finite element solutions. It is found that the present stress intensity factors calculated for cracked plates under plane extension as well as bending compare favorably with the analytical ones.

Notes: The purpose of this paper is to show that a mathematical programming method, due to Maier and his co-workers, of nonlinear structural analysis can be rerformulated so that greater computational efficiences are achived. The methods are designed for a class of elastic-plastic structures under ‘piecewise linear’ assumptions and solve among others the problem of determining the stresses and strains in the structure. The reformulation gives rise to a class of mathematical programming problems calles a ‘n by dn linear complementarity problem’, for which the author has developed an efficient algorithm. It will be explained why and by how much the proposed method (the reformulation and its solution by the author's algorithm) solves the structural problems more efficiently than the existing one. Results of a systematic computer experiment supporting the efficiency of the proposed method are also presented.

Notes: The choice of strain-displacement relations to fomulate curved finite elements for the geometrically nonlinear analysis of deep thin shells of general shape is discussed. It is clearly demonstrated on a simple arch problem how the strain-displacement relations can affect the buckling pressure and it is concuded that inconsistent expressions should be avoided.

Notes: Fully mature adult Eisenia foetida sensory buds are abundant on the prostomium and the first segment. In subsequent segments they are restricted to the anterior half where they form a single row aligned with the setae and encircling the worm. In the more posterior regions of the worm the buds are widely separated and fewer. The surface of each bud is a raised circular or oval area from which 15 to 100 so-called sensory hairs arise, being cylindrical and apparently flexible. The number of these projections decreases toward the posterior end of the worm.In worms newly emerged from egg cocoons, the general pattern of distribution and external form of sensory buds resembles that of adults, but the buds are much fewer and smaller than in adults. Although these worms emerge with their definitive adult number of segments, new buds and additional sensory projections are formed during post hatching development.

Notes: The distribution and morphology of phagocytic (Type II) supraependymal cells residing within the third ventricle of the guinea pig were investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Type II supraependymal cells were restricted to nonciliated regions of the ventricle. They were most numerous on the choroid plexus, abundant within the infundibular recess and were present on the ventricular floor in the region of the median eminence. Morphologically, they were characterized by a soma from which pseudopodia-like processes extended to the subjacent ependyma. Type II cells varied in configuration according to their location. Those residing on the choroid plexus typically had irregular somas and possessed processes that generally terminated in finger-like extensions. In contrast, cells on the ventricular floor and within the infundibular recess were stellate and possessed processes that terminated in fan-like cytoplasmic expansions. There were no differences noted in the frequency, distribution or morphology of Type II supraependymal cells in male and female animals. Furthermore, cell frequency did not appear to vary in relation to the estrous cycle. The data suggest that the pleomorphism exhibited by Type II supraependymal cells may reflect adaptations to diverse environmental conditions present within different regions of the third ventricle.

Notes: Study of the fine structure of the macronucleus in Euplotes eurystomus, a ciliate protozoon, during various stages of the cell division cycle has yielded new information about intranuclear helices. They are frequently observed at the periphery of chromatin bodies or next to the nuclear envelope, and they appear to be a constituent of nucleoli. The fibril that forms a helix is about 11-15 nm thick, and torus profiles of helices cut in cross section are about 35 nm in diameter. In substructure the helix is composed of a thin strand 3-5 nm thick which is coiled to form the 11-15 nm fibril; so the helix is a super-coiled structure. The intranuclear helices are present in the macronucleus throughout the cell cycle. They do not show obvious changes of relative abundance nor changes of relative localization in the nucleus, with one exception: they were never observed in the diffuse zone of replication bands. Evidence is presented indicating that nuclear helices migrate to the cytoplasm through nuclear pores. Although the chemical composition of the Euplotes intranuclear helices is unknown, information in the literature on similar helices in Amoeba indicates that they contain RNA and not DNA. The observations on Euplotes helices are consistent with a concept of “packaged” RNA for transport to the cytoplasm.

Notes: Eggs of the turtle Trionyx spiniferus are rigid, calcareous spheres averaging 2.5 cm in diameter. The eggshell is morphologically very similar to avian eggshells. The outer crystalline layer is composed of roughly columnar aggregates, or shell units, of calcium carbonate in the aragonite form. Each shell unit tapers to a somewhat conical tip at its base. Interior to the crystalline layer are two tertiary egg membranes: the outer shell membrane and the inner shell membrane. The outer shell membrane is firmly attached to the inner surface of the shell, and the two membranes are in contact except at the air cell, where the inner shell membrane separates from the outer shell membrane. Both membranes are multi-layered, with the inner shell membrane exhibiting a more fibrous structure than the outer shell membrane. Numerous pores are found in the eggshell, and these generally occur at the intersection of four or more shell units.

Notes: The afferent and efferent components of the facial nerve were traced within the brain stem of Rana catesbeiana, using three different neuroanatomical techniques. Primary afferent fibers could be traced to the spinal tract of trigeminal nerve and to fasciculus solitarius as far caudally as the first or second spinal segment, using silver degeneration methods. Cobalt filling of the entire nerve showed the same distribution of afferent fibers, as well as the filling of the cells within the mesencephalic nucleus of trigeminal, indicating the origin of a proprioceptive component of the facial nerve. Cobalt iontophoresis and horseradish peroxidase experiments showed that the motor nucleus of the facial nerve was located just ventral to the fourth ventricle, and caudal to the motor nucleus of trigeminal. The distribution of afferent fibers to fasciculus solitarius and the spinal tract of trigeminal is similar in some respects to the distribution of afferent fibers from the trigeminal and vagal nerves in the bullfrog. The afferent fibers from the three cranial nerves are found as far caudally in the brain stem as the second spinal segment.

Notes: The morphology of tooth crowns is variable inter-specifically among caecilians. Cusp number and shape, crown dimensions, and crown curvature characterize various species and have both functional and phylogenetic implications. Ichthyophis, Uraeotyphlus, Hypogeophis, and Geotrypetes have bicuspid teeth; Dermophis, Gymnopis, Caecilia, and Typhlonectes monocuspid. Crown morphology as revealed by scanning electron microscopy is associated with prey grasping and, in one case, possible specialization of prey type.

Notes: The structure of contact chemoreceptors in the cibariopharyngeal pump of the moth Trichoplusia ni (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is described. Two types of receptors designated A and B are located on the floor of the pump. Two groups of 9-12 A receptors are located in the anterior part of the pump, and two groups of two B receptors are in the posterior part of the pump. Five sensory dendrites extend to the tip of each A receptor and four to each B receptors. Available evidence indicates that these receptors are contact chemoreceptors and do not serve as mechanoreceptors. The receptors are compared to those of other insects.

Notes: Classical light microscopic studies on pigmentation of Fundulus heteroclitus (killifish) indicated that there are three groups of light reflecting cells; one group on the surface of scales reflects white light, while two other deeper groups (the melaniridophores and the stratum argenteum) are iridescent. The results presented here show that: (1) The scale leucophores reflect white light by a Tyndall light-scattering mechanism, by virtue of the presence of randomly oriented organelles of “novel” morphology. (2) The iridophores of the melaniridophores contain stacks of irregularly-spaced, large reflecting platelets which function as an imperfect multiple thin layer interference system. (3) The stratum argenteum consists of a continuous layer(s) of iridophores with reflecting platelets which are so regularly packed as to approach an ideal multiple thin layer interference system. (4) In all three types of light reflecting cells, the dimensions and packing (orientation) of the reflecting organelles satisfactorily account for the chromogenic properties of the cells, including colors as viewed under transmitted, reflected, or polarized light. (5) The spacial relationships between these light reflecting cells and adjoining melanophores are different for each type of light reflecting cell. Furthermore, we propose to replace the term reflecting platelet with refractosome.

Notes: The chloride cells in the interlamellar areas of the gills of young adult, anadromous sea lampreys, Petromyzon marinus L., captured in fresh water undergo structural modification during the adaptation of these animals to sea water. In fresh water the chloride cells are partially overlapped by mucus-secreting superficial cells and contain an extensive reticulum of cytoplasmic tubules, which are confluent with both lateral and basal plasma membranes, numerous mitochondria, a Golgi complex of moderate size, and numerous apical vesicles. Adaptation to sea water results in a retraction of the superficial cells, exposing the entire apical surface of the chloride cells, and a proliferation of both cytoplasmic tubules and mitochondria. Extensive enlargement of the Golgi complex in the chloride cells of these animals suggests the involvement of this organelle in the proliferation of cytoplasmic tubules. The extracellular tracer, ruthenium red, enters the tubules from the lateral or basal intercellular spaces in both freshwater- and seawater-adapted animals but never enters either tubules or vesicles from the apical surfaces, indicating that these are not confluent. The presence of dividing basal cells and newly-forming chloride cells, combined with evidence of degeneration of chloride cells, suggests that there is a turnover of this cell type. Both superficial and basal cells are phagocytic and involved in heterophagy of degenerating chloride cells. This phenomenon occurs in both fresh water and sea water indicating that the chloride cells may be functional in both environments.
