    Notes: In this paper the development of a compatible mixed design and analysis method is presented for the quasi-three-dimensional finite element blade-to-blade program FINSUP. The method consists of two parts. The first is concerned with a method of modelling changes to a blade shape using a surface transpiration model. The second is concerned with determining the relationship between the displaced blade surface and the surface velocity distribution. It is shown that with the Newton-Raphson procedure adopted in the method a very efficient manner of introducing the design option is possible. As a consequence the resulting program is fast and completely interactive. A number of examples are given to illustrate how the mixed design and analysis mode can be used in practical blade design.

    Notes: A general implicit (GI) method for solving iteratively the algebraic system arising from a finite difference approximation of an elliptic partial differential equation is formulated. Under certain assumptions this method can be reduced to the already known implicit techniques. It is shown that the GI method has a very special physical meaning when solving fluid flow problems. It is shown also how this method can be optimized to achieve the maximum rate of convergence. Finally it is shown how this new strategy is applied by solving some classical numerical fluid dynamics problems.

    Notes: A three dimensional hydrodynamic sea model of an arbitrary sea area is formulated using sigma co-ordinates in the vertical. The solution of the equations using finite difference grids in the horizontal and the vertical is described.Discretization of the vertical viscosity term in the hydrodynamic equations using the DuFort-Frankel and Saul'ev methods is developed. Some numerical instabilities occur with the DuFort-Frankel method which can be overcome by splitting the hydrodynamic equations into equations describing the mean flow and equations describing the deviations from it. The computational advantages of solving these equations with different time steps are discussed.The accuracy and stability of the various methods is demonstrated for wind induced flow in a simple rectangular basin having dimensions representing the North Sea.

    Notes: The unsteady Euler equations are numerically solved using the finite volume one-step scheme recently developed by Ron-Ho Ni. The multiple-grid procedure of Ni is also implemented. The flows are assumed to be homo-enthalpic; the energy equation is eliminated and the static pressure is determined by the steady Bernoulli equation; a local time-step technique is used. Inflow and outflow boundaries are treated with the compatibility relations method of ONERA. The efficiency of the multiple-grid scheme is demonstrated by a two-dimensional calculation (transonic flow past the NACA 12 aerofoil) and also by a three-dimensional one (transonic lifting flow past the M6 wing). The third application presented shows the ability of the method to compute the vortical flow around a delta wing with leading-edge separation. No condition is applied at the leading-edge; the vortex sheets are captured in the same sense as shock waves. Results indicate that the Euler equations method is well suited for the prediction of flows with shock waves and contact discontinuities, the multiple-grid procedure allowing a substantial reduction of the computational time.

    Notes: A solution adaptive grid (SAG) method which redistributes the nodal points of a function according to its curvature is presented. A single, user-selected step parameter, P, is available for controlling the maximum step size, allowing the application of the technique to a wide variety of problems. Three test cases are cited: (1) the 1-dimensional inviscid Burgers equation, (2) the Falkner-Skan equation and (3) the finite-volume form of the Navier-Stokes equations for transonic aerofoil flows. In all three cases, significant solution improvement in terms of accuracy and convergence acceleration were achieved.

    Notes: Previous three-dimensional simulations of the lid-driven cavity flow have reproduced only the most general features of the flow. Improvements to a finite difference code, REBUFFS, have made possible the first completely successful simulation of the three-dimensional lid-driven cavity flow. The principal improvement to the code was the incorporation of a modified QUICK scheme, a higher-order upwind finite difference formulation. Results for a cavity flow at a Reynolds number of 3200 have reproduced experimentally observed Taylor-Görtler-like vortices and other three-dimensional effects heretofore not simulated. Experimental results obtained from a unique experimental cavity facility validate the calculated results.

    Notes: This paper reports on the outcome of a workshop of the IAHR Working Group on Refined Modelling of Flows on the subject of computing laminar flows in complex geometries. Flow inside a channel with a smooth expansion was chosen by the organizers of the workshop as a suitable test case for assessing the capabilities of current numerical methods. The results obtained by fifteen participant groups are presented and compared against a suitable benchmark solution. The most important considerations that emerged at the workshop are briefly reported and the conclusions arising from an analysis and comparison of the various solutions are finally provided.

    Notes: Many problems of applied oceanography and environmental science demand the solution of the momentum, mass and energy equations on physical domains having curving coastlines. Finite-difference calculations representing the boundary as a step function may give inaccurate results near the coastline where simulation results are of greatest interest for numerous applications. This suggests the use of methods which are capable of handling the problem of boundary curvature.This paper presents computational results for the shallow water equations on a circular ring of constant depth, employing the concept of boundary fitted grids (BFG) for an accurate representation of the boundary. All calculations are performed on a rectangle in the transformed plane using a mesh with square grid spacing. Comparisons of the simulations of transient normal mode oscillations and analytic solutions are shown, demonstrating that this technique yields accurate results in situations (provided that there is a reasonable choice of grid) involving a curved boundary. The software developed allows application to any two-dimensional area, regardless of the complexity of the geometry.Simulation runs were made with two co-ordinate systems. For the first system, the grid point distribution was obtained from polar co-ordinates. For the second one, grid point positions were calculated numerically, solving Poisson's equation. It was found that small variations in the metric coefficients do not deteriorate the accuracy of the simulation results.Moreover, comparisons of surface elevation and velocity components at grid points near the inner and outer radii obtained from an x-y Cartesian grid model with the BFG simulation were made. The former model produced inacccuracies at grid points near boundaries, and, owing to the large number of mesh points used to yield the necessary fine resolution, the computation time was found to be a factor of three higher.

    Notes: A new scheme is applied for increasing the accuracy of the penalty finite element method for incompressible flow by systematically varying from element to element the sign and magnitude of the penalty parameter λ, which enters through ∇.v + p/λ = 0, an approximation to the incompressibility constraint. Not only is the error in this approximation reduced beyond that achievable with a constant λ, but also digital truncation error is lowered when it is aggravated by large variations in element size, a critical problem when the discretization must resolve thin boundary layers. The magnitude of the penalty parameter can be chosen smaller than when λ is constant, which also reduces digital truncation error; hence a shorter word-length computer is more likely to succeed. Error estimates of the method are reviewed. Boundary conditions which circumvent the hazards of aphysical pressure modes are catalogued for the finite element basis set chosen here. In order to compare performance, the variable penalty method is pitted against the conventional penalty method with constant λ in several Stokes flow case studies.

    Notes: Modern lubricants often exhibit shear-thinning due to the presence of high molecular weight polymers as additives. Therefore the influence of such non-Newtonian effects on the performances of lubricating systems must be predicted. The corresponding fluid film flow is governed by a non-linear partial differential equation, which generalizes the classical Reynolds equation. Having prescribed adequate boundary conditions, this equation is solved by a finite element method with optimal control. The problem of the square slider bearing lubricated by the Rabinowitsch fluid is solved in order to test the accuracy of the numerical scheme. The pressure and velocity fields are given and compared with the corresponding ones obtained for the Newtonian fluid.

    Notes: When the Galerkin finite-element method with a nine-node isoparametric Lagrangian element is applied to solve non-Newtonian fluid flow problems, a considerable amount of computing time is required to solve the discretized non-linear system of equations by Newton's method. A method proposed by Broyden has been modified to compute the Jacobian matrix associated with Newton's method. This modified Broyden's method can be combined with the frontal method to efficiently solve the linearized finite-element equations during the iteration. Numerical results of a sample problem concerning the determination of the pressure-drop/flow-rate relationship for power-law fluids in rectangular ducts show that the application of this new method can reduce computing time substantially.

    Notes: The regions of applicability of the Boussinesq approximation are investigated for natural convection in a fluid-saturated porous medium. A perturbation method is used to assess the relative importance of individual terms in the differential equations which describe the natural convection process. Specific limits to the validity of the Boussinesq approximation are identified for water and air. For water, it is shown that the restrictions imposed by the classical Boussinesq approximation can be relaxed by allowing for the variation of thermophysical properties with temperature while still retaining the incompressible form of the continuity relation. Results of the analysis are verified through numerical calculations performed for steady natural convection in a planar, water-saturated porous region.

    Notes: A finite element method is proposed for the analysis of density flow which is induced by a difference of density. The method employs the idea that density variation can be pursued by using markers distributed in the flow field. For the numerical integration scheme, the velocity correction method is successfully used, introducing a potential for the correction of velocity. This method is useful because one can use linear interpolation functions for velocity, pressure and potential based on the triangular finite element. The final equations can be formulated using the quasi-explicit finite element method. A flume in a tank with sloping bottom has been analysed by the present method. The computed results show extremely good agreement with the experimental observations.

    Notes: The classical potential formulation of inviscid transonic flows is modified to account for non-isentropic effects. The density is determined in terms of the speed as well as the pressure, which in turn is calculated from a second-order mixed-type equation derived via differentiating the momentum equations.The present model differs in general from the exact inviscid Euler equations since the flow is assumed irrotational. On the other hand, since the shocks are not isentropic, they are weaker and are placed further upstream compared to the classical potential solution. Furthermore, the streamline leaving the aerofoil does not necessarily bisect the trailing edge.Results for the present conservative calculations are presented for non-lifting and lifting aerofoils at subsonic and transonic speeds and compared to potential and Euler solutions.

    Notes: On the basis of the two-dimensional theory of elasticity, the theoretical analysis of a vertical, fluid-filled crack intersecting and oblique joint has been made for the extraction of geothermal heat from hot, dry rock masses, where the opening of the joint near a point of intersection and the frictional resistance against slips along the joint are taken into account. The stress intensity factors are evaluated for discussing crack kinking at the upper joint tip, and the sufficient conditions on theinclination of the joint and on the length between the upper joint tip and the point of intersection are obtained for keeping a fluid-filled crack stable just beneath a joint. It is also shown that the volume of the stable reservoir created by using a joint is much larger than that of a fluidfilled crack in a jointless rock mass, even if the joint is oblique and is opened up by the fluid pressure.

    Notes: The plate loading test is performed in order to determine the deformation modulus of a rock mass in situ. In the standard execution of this test the loading is applied perpendicular to the rock surface. The displacements are measured on the axis of symmetry, since for an isotropic material with linear deformation characteristics exact formulae are known which are valid at this location. For horizontal strata this presents no problem as it is easy to provide loading in a vertical direction. When the rock strata are dipping it is imprectical to use nonvertical load and it is then necessary to calculate the modulus from the displacements in a non-axisymmetrical arrangement. Using the well-known method of the Taylor series approximate formulae are derved which are sufficiently accurate for all practical cases of sloping rock.

    Notes: In this paper, a general variational principle for the initial boundary value problem of quasi-static thermoelastic consolidation is developed by assuming infinitesimal deformation and an incompressible fluid flowing through a linearly elastic solid.     Notes: In this paper the settlement of a rigid foundation supported by a layer of clay which has been stabilized with stone columns is considered. The results of an analytic solution for the settlement, assuming no yield occurs in the clay or columns, have been presented in a previous publication. This solution is now used to develop an interaction analysis which takes account of yielding within the stone columns.This interaction analysis is based on a number of plausible assumptions regarding the behaviour of the clay and columns. In order to check the validity of these assumptions elasto-plastic finite element analyses have been performed and the agreement between the two methods is very good. However, the computational effort required for the finite element analyses is many orders of magnitude greater than that for the interaction analysis.This analysis has been used to generate a number of parametric solutions which provide a basis for estimating the reduction in settlement of the foundation due to the stabilization of the clay.

    Notes: Stability and bifurcation of plane-strain, undrained, rectilinear deformations on water-saturated granular soil specimens are discussed. The soil, sand or normally consolidated clay, is described by a 2D-flow theory of plasticity for frictional material with non-associated flow rule. Contractant material become unstable (liquefies) at the state of maximum deviatoric stress. For dilatant material the dominant failure mode is shear banding that occurs close to the state of maximum principal effectivestress ratio. The theoretical findings are supported by and are used to explain existing experimental results.

    Notes: The finite element method (FEM) and the boundary element method (BEM) are two well established numerical methods used for the analysis of underground openings. The advantages of both the methods are utilized by adopting FEBEM in which finite elements are coupled with boundary elements. A coupling procedure is presented in this paper. In using FEBEM, the effect of the location of interface boundary between finite element and boundary element regions, effect of Poisson's ratio and effect of stress ratio are discussed. It is shown that Poisson's ratio and stress ratio have significant effect on the accuracy of the results. Different discretization schemes are discussed to study their effect on accuracy and computation time. The use of different material properties in the FE region is presented. A comparative study is made with FEM for all the cases. It is shown that use of FEBEM is more advantageous than FEM.

    Notes: The current work uses Baiocchi's transformation to obtain heuristically a formulation of the inhomogeneous dam problem. When finite element methods are applied the finite dimensional problem is a variational inequality which may be solved to obtain approximate solutions. The main advantage of the method is that it uses a fixed mesh.The finite dimensional problem is solved by means of succesive overrelaxation with projection. Although the standard convergence theory1 for this method does not apply in this case, because the stiffness matrix is not symmetric, satisfactory and rapid convergence was obtained in all of our examples.Numerical results are given for some examples.

    Notes: This paper examines the torsional response of a rigid pier type foundation, with a non-uniform or hollow cross-section which is embedded in bonded contact with a layered elastic half space. The tractions which act at the axisymmetric boundary surface between the pier and the surrounding elastic medium are represented by discretized regions of uniform traction. The compatibility of deformation at the boundary is used to determine the interface stress distribution.     Notes: A theoretical model is presented to predict simultaneous transient coupled heat and moisture transfer in partly saturated soils. The formulation is in terms of volumetric moisture content, is two dimensional, includes gravitational flow and takes into account latent heat of vaporization effects. The numerical solution of the problem is accomplished by means of a finite element solution algorithm. Predictions from the numerical model are used to investigate the importance of gravitational flow, for the case of a soil stratum subjected to evaporation losses at the surface. The results achieved show good qualitative agreement with expected behaviour.

    Notes: The calculus of variations is an attractive tool for the determination of critical slip surfaces, but there are unresoived difficulties in its application to plane strain problems. Here we consider the simpler problem of rectilinear flow under gravity or other constant body force. In particular we investigate the stability of an infinitely long slope of finite width for material with cohesion and internal friction. From a variational formulation, the differential equation of the critical slip surface is formulated. An explict solution of this equation is obtained, and hence we determine the critical slope angle in terms of the width of the slope and the material properties. The results are compared with those of an earlier limit analysis treatment.

    Notes: When soils are considered as elastoplastic materials the elastic moduli are much higher than the plastic one(s). However the amount of elastic strain cannot be disregarded as it appears when undrained loading occurs. Based on experimental or theoretical observations, a number of elastic models with stress dependent moduli have been proposed. Attention is focused here on the consequences of this stress dependency on the recoverability of strain and work done after a closed stress path. A necessary and sufficient condition for an elastic material to be hyperelastic is given and the way to obtain practical solutions is shown on examples. The study is restricted to isotropic material undergoing small strains.

    Notes: A quasi-explicit modification of well-known two time level implicit schemes for first-order, non-linear initial value problems is presented. Stable and accurate quadratic families for the quasi-explicit generalized trapezoidal method (GTM) and the generalized midpoint method (GMM) are derived. Accuracy, stability and oscillatory behaviour of the proposed algorithms are studied. Much higher stability and oscillatory levels are obtained for quasi-explicit modification of the generalized trapezoidal method than those of the generalized midpoint method.

    Notes: A computational procedure is developed for solving the problem of a circular hydraulic fracture propagating under the action of frac-0fluid being pumped in at a central wellbore. The crack is modelled as continuous distributions of ring dislocations and the resulting elasticity singular integral equation is solved numerically. The fluid flow equations are approximated by local and global interpolation finite difference schemes. The coupling between elasticity and fluid flow is handled numerically, by, two different algorithms: one iterates on crack tip velocity whereas the other varies the time step size until it agrees with the chosen increment in crack length. Sample results are given; it is found that the velocity algorithm is computationally more, efficient and more stable. The model allows detailed tracing of pressure distribution and fluid flow in the fracture, even under complex conditions of cyclic injection and fluid rheology. It may serve as a stand-alone model of (horizontal) hydrafracs-especially at shallow depths-or it may be used as a reference frame to test the various numerical formulation/algorithms required for the ongoing development of a fully 3-D hydrafrac simulator.

    Notes: A one-dimensional wave propagation method for earthquake response analysis of horizontally-layered sites of infinite lateral extent is adapted to account for the finite cross-sectional dimensions of an embankment dam overlying a foundation deposit which may be considered infinite in its lateral extent. The procedure is used to study the response of an existing embankment dam for an actual earthquake record. A two-dimensional dynamic finite element analysis is also performed for this case. The records of ground acceleration at an outcropping base rock and at the crest of the dam are available for the site. The comparisons of computed and observed responses support the modified use of the simple numerical procedure.

    Notes: When a heat source such as a canister of radioactive waste is buried in a saturated soil the temperature changes that occur will cause the pore water to expand a greater amount than the voids of the soil. The temperature change will thus usually be accompanied by an increase in pore pressure. If the soil is sufficiently permeable these pore pressures will dissipate.     Notes: A 3-D mathematical approach to slope stability, which is based on limiting equilibrium and variational analysis, is presented. In the initial formulation there are three unknown functions: the slip surface, the normal stress and the shear stress direction over this surface. The minimum factor of safety is sought through variational extremization. The analysis indicates that the factor of safety is independent of the normal stress distribution over the critical slip surface. It also indicates that the direction of the elementary shear force over the slip surface depends on the slip surface function, but not on the normal stress function. The analysis yields a non-linear first order partial differential equation, relating the slip surface and its first partial derivatives. By limiting the analysis to symmetrical problems an ordinary differential equation, governing the slip surface path on the plane of symmetry, is derived. This equation enables the development of a numerical procedure to determine the minimal factor of safety of symmetrical 3-D slopes. Two possible failure modes are determined for homogeneous slopes. One mode consists of finite 3-D sliding body and the second represents cylindrical failure. Numerical analyses for some simple cases, of homogencous slopes are presented.

    Notes: Solutions developed in the first part of this paper (i.e. describing the response of a non-homogeneous half-space subjected to surface point and line loads) are used in this part to obtain solutions for a variety of surface loadings. Consideration is given to a distributed load acting over a circular area or strip and a rigid disk or strip subjected to applied normal load and moment.It is established that the profiles of surface settlement due to uniformly distributed loads acting over a strip or circular area are strongly dependent on the degree of non-homogeneity. This dependency is reduced when the footing is rigid. When α = 1 the moduli variation is identical to the Gibson soil and the equivalence with the Winkler soil model is established.

    Notes: The application of finite element methods (FEM) is often restricted by the available computer capacity and the computing costs. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is, to present test results and to discuss possible ways of achieving a substantial reduction in computing times. Dividing the numerical analysis into the five levels-hardware, software, element-mesh and element-type, iteration technique (approximation of non-linearity) and constitutive model-one can show that the computing time can be reduced by about 20 per cent at every level. In particular, the use of the modified Newton-Raphson method for approximation of non-linearity and the constitutive model-apart from the theoretical concept (elastoplastic, hypoelastic etc.) - must be formulated in a manner which does not produce substantial changes in the coefficients of the material matrix caused by small stress changes. On the whole, computing time can be reduced to about 10 per cent of present computing costs. Thus, it would even be economically viable to solve three-dimensional non-linear problems by FEM.

E. program ‘SOL’. A detailed study is made to simulate the field behaviour with the finite element approach. Comparisons are made between the field and analytical consolidation behaviour.     Notes: A simple rate-dependent tension model, tailored primarily for rocks in ground-shock calculations, has been constructed. It is formulated as an internal state variable theory with spherical void development taken to approximate the underlying dissipative micromechanism. This simplifying assumption of ductile, rather than brittle, damage growth has been made to enhance the practicality of the model for large-scale problems. The model has been restated within the fromework of (strain-softening) viscoplastcity to associate it with the desirable mathematical properties of the latter theory. The tension option, extended to include healing in the post-damage compressive phase, has been implemented in a standard cap constitutive routine and is referred to as the visco-damage tension model. Model parameters are selected for a shale-like material. Results of uniaxial shock-loading strain-rate calculations exhibit desired characteristics in tension. Damage-related hysteretic effects are illustrated through cyclic loading calculations. It is planned to develop more effecient computational procedures to facilitate adoption of the model into large-scale ground shock calculations. Anisotropic extensions of the model will then be considered.

    Notes: The analysis of elasto-plastic boundary value problems using the finite element method involves many discretizations. These lead to the problem of yield surface drift in which the stress state predicted at the end of an elasto-plastic increment of loading does not lie on the current yield surface. As such discrepancies are comulative it is important to ensure that the stresses are corrected back to the yield surface during each increment of loading.In this paper five methods of accounting for this drift are examined. These involve correcting the stresses by projecting back along the plastic flow, the total strain increment and the accumulated effective stress direction. In addition a ‘correct’, method which accounts for the changes in elastic strains which accompany any stress correction is considered. This method is theoretically more sound than the other approximate approaches. All five methods have been used in finite element analyses of the stress changes that occur adjacent to a single pile installed in a uniform deposit of soil on pile loading. The soil was assumed to be normally consolidated and was modelled using a form of modified Cam Clay. Comparison of these results with an analysis, in which yield surface drift was negligible indicated that only the ‘correct’ method and the method involving projecting back along the plastic flow direction give accurate predictions. Substantiai errors occur if the other methods of correcting for yield surface drift are employed. It is recommended that the ‘correct’ method be adopted for finite element calculations.

    Notes: The axial and lateral load-displacement response of single piles and pile groups during the secondary consolidation (creep) phase of deformation is obtained by idealizing the soil as a linear viscoelastic material. The boundary element method is used to model the soil halfspace and the piles, which are assumed to behave elastically, are idealized as beam-columns. By using the correspondence principle, the problem is solved in the Laplace transform domain and the final solution is obtained by numerical inversion of the transformed data. The salient features of the viscoelastic response are identified in several non-dimensional plots which encompass the spectrum of geometrical and material parameters commonly encountered in practice. The results of the analysis compare favourably with the limited data available in the literature.

    Notes: The vibrating wire stress gauge is a borehole device for measuring stress changes in situ. Three gauge arrays are required for determining changes in the secondary principal stresses. Standard data reduction formulae that use the principal axes for reference are in error because of possible changes in the principal directions. Data reduction formulae that allow for such changes and for arbitrary gauge orientations within an array are presented here. This is of considerable practical importance when installing gauges because of scheduling restrictions and hole irregularities that may preclude installation at the planned angles for which data reduction formulae exist. Linearization and thus direct inversion of the resulting system of equations, is achieved in a fixed but otherwise arbitrarily oriented Cartesian system of reference.

    Notes: A transfer matrix method is applied for the analysis of non-linear pile group responses. The expression for the transfer matrix is obtained by idealizing the non-linear pile group as a group of piles attached to a piecewise linear “Winkler model for a pile group”. This Winkler idealization is essential to apply a transfer matrix method for the pile group response analysis. The parameters of this Winkler model can be defined from unit load transfer curves obtained for a single pile. In the limited studies carried out, it is found that the present approach predicts the response of pile groups reasonably well.

    Notes: Several models describing soil response under cyclic loading and the ‘liquefaction’ potential have been introduced in recent years with limited success. Most of these are over-complex for realistic parameter identification and have not been widely adopted for practical use. In this paper we introduce a relatively simple modification of the well-known critical state model which accounts reasonably well for the phenomena observed under cyclic tests and indeed improves the performance of critical state, models in monotonic loading.This model is compared with experimental results and with the ‘densification model’ introduced earlier by the authors and shows good predicitive capacity.The model is of a generalized plasticity-bounding surface type. In its simplest form, suitable for clay-like materials, it requires the identifications of a single parameter additional to those required for a standard, critical state model.

    Notes: This paper extends the bounding surface, generalized plasticity, model of Part I to reproduce the behaviour of sands under both static and transient loading.The essential features of the first model are preserved but the following changes are introduced: (i)The shape of the yield surface is modified.(ii)A non-associative flow rule is introduced.(iii)The hardening parameter of the bounding surface includes not only volumetric but also deviatoric plastic strain.(iv)Plastic volumetric and deviatoric strains are introduced during unloading.Each of these modifications can be introduced separately in a hierarchical manner to model in an improved way the behaviour of sands. Good comparison with experimental observations is recorded.     Notes: A hybrid boundary element formulation for the steady state analysis of piles and pile groups embedded in a soil stratum in which the modulus increases linearly with depth is presented. The piles are represented by compressible columns or flexible beams and the soil as a hysteretic, layered medium. The explicit Green's function corresponding to dynamic loads in the interior of a layered stratum, developed earlier by Kausel is used in the study.The governing differential equations for the pile domain are solved for a distributed periodic loading intensity and those for the soil domain by a system of boundary elements at the pile-soil interface. These are then assembled into a system of algebraic equations by satisfying interface equilibrium and compatibility.The results of the analysis have been compared against those from alternative formulations, e.g. finite elements, and confirm the accuracy of the proposed formulation. Representative results for single piles and pile groups are presented.

    Notes: Remedial measures were required for a gold tailings dam in South Africa which had undergone a minor slope failure. Information from laboratory and field measurements was used for evaluation of the present and future stability as the height of the dam increased.     Notes: An application of the depth-integrated k-∊ turbulence model is presented for separated flow in a wide, shallow, rectangular channel with an abrupt expansion in width. The well-known numerical problems associated with the use of upwind and central finite differences for convection are overcome by the adoption of the spatially third-order accurate QUICK finite difference technique. Results show that modification of the depth-integrated k-∊ turbulence closure model for streamline curvature leads to significant improvement in the agreement between model predictions and experimental measurements.

    Notes: A numerical and an experimental study of the flow of an incompressible fluid in a polar cavity is presented. The experiments included flow visualization, in two perpendicular planes, and quantitative measurements of the velocity field by a laser Doppler anemometer. Measurements were done for two ranges of Reynolds numbers; about 60 and about 350. The stream function-vorticity form of the governing equations was approximated by upwind or central finite-differences. Both types of finite-difference approximations were solved by a multi-grid method. Numerical solutions were computed on a sequence of grids and the relative accuracy of the solutions was studied. Our most accurate numerical solutions had an estimated error of 0.1 per cent and 1 per cent for Re = 60 and Re = 350, respectively. It was also noted that the solution to the second order finite difference equations was more accurate, compared to the solution to the first order equations, only if fine enough meshes were used. The possibility of using extrapolations to improve accuracy was also considered. Extrapolated solutions were found to be valid only if solutions computed on fine enough meshes were used. The numerical and the experimental results were found to be in very good agreement.

    Notes: A consistent three-level time-split group finite-element method, suitable for the computation of viscous compressible flows in irregular geometric domains, is described. Exploitation of the group12 formulation permits an accurate and economical algorithm to be developed in a generalized-co-ordinate (ζ,η) space. A variable sweep cycle is used to accelerate convergence to the steady state. The method is demonstrated by computing laminar and turbulent flow past a trailing edge. The method uses an algebraic eddy viscosity model to represent turbulence and produces results in close agreement with the experiments and computations of Viswanath et al8.

    Notes: Exact periodic solutions are generated for the 3-D hydrodynamic equations in linearized form. A linear slip condition is enforced at the bottom, based on the velocity at the bottom. It is shown that the bottom stress can be equivalently expressed in terms of the vertically averaged velocity, and expressions for this bottom stress coefficient are derived in terms of the primary parameters of the problem. As a result, the three-dimensional structure may be assembled from conventional solutions to (a) the 1-D vertical diffusion equation; and (b) the 2-D vertically averaged shallow water equations. In the latter, the bottom stress effects are shown to be complex and frequency-dependent, and an additional rotational term is required for their representation.

    Notes: The use of the finite element method in solving the problem of flow of a Newtonian fluid in periodically constricted tubes is explored. The performance of eight node serendipity and nine node Lagrangian elements is compared. It was found that the Lagrangian element results in unstable velocity fields when stagnant or recirculation regions are present. This is characteristic of tubes with large expansion zones. The eight node element does not exhibit instabilities. Both elements give accurate pressure fields. This behaviour is contrary to traditional results obtained for flow problems with similar geometrical characteristics. This suggests that the periodicity of the boundary conditions might be the cause of the instabilities in the numerical solution.The use of the continuity equation to simplify the viscous terms in the Stokes equations resulted, in this particular case, in a deterioration of the rate of convergence of the algorithm.

    Notes: The pressure gradient method using velocity components and components of a pressure gradient as dependent variables has been modified to solve incompressible Newtonian fluid flow problems numerically. Applying this modified method to unsteady-state development of flow in a circular cavity shows that, at least for the case of a low Reynolds number flow, relative errors produced by the proposed method are smaller for most time intervals than those produced by the primitive velocity-pressure variable method and by the standard pressure gradient method. Also it is found that the modified and standard pressure gradient methods can be applied to the unsteady circular cavity flow at a moderate Reynolds number of at least up to 200.

    Notes: This paper describes an iterative technique for solving the coupled algebraic equations for mass and momentum conservation for an incompressible fluid flow. The technique is based on the simultaneous solution for pressure and velocity along lines. In a manner similar to ADI methods for a single variable, the solution domain is entirely swept line-by-line in each co-ordinate direction successively until a converged solution is obtained. The tight coupling between the equations that is guaranteed by the method results in an economical solution of the equation set.

    Notes: Steady, axisymmetric, isothermal, incompressible flow past a sphere with uniform blowing out of the surface is investigated for Reynolds numbers in the range 1 to 100 and surface velocities up to 10 times the free stream value. A stream-function-velocity formulation of the flow equations in spherical polar co-ordinates is used and the equations are solved by a Galerkin finite-element method. Reductions in the drag coefficients arising from blowing are computed and the effects on the viscous and pressure contributions to the drag considered. Changes in the surface pressure, surface vorticity and flow patterns for two values of the Reynolds number (1 and 40) are examined in greater detail. Particular attention is paid to the perturbation to the flow field far from the sphere.
