Notes: Calcinosis universalis associated with dermatomyositis occurred in a 58-year-old woman. Tissues removed from the sublingual region in the patient were studied by ordinary microscopy, electron microscopy, and an electron-microanalytic method. The calcified materials were distributed on collagen fibers and seemed to have a relationship with foci of fibrinoid degeneration. Moreover, globular and/or membranous structures, considered to originate from the degenerate cells of the stroma, were observed in these calcified zones. Some of them contained electron-dense materials. Therefore, the globular and/or membranous structures were thought to be concerned with initial calcification in this case. Furthermore, irregular bone tissue was formed adjacent to the calcified masses. In addition, the calcified materials were identified by X-ray diffraction examination and electron microscopy as hydroxyapatite.

Notes: The bunch length was measured by using a highly sensitive streak camera with a time resolution of 2 ps. It was found that fine structures appeared in the electron bunch shape and that the shapes of electron bunches were described by a Gaussian distribution on the average. The dependence of bunch length on beam current was measured for an electron beam of 607 MeV. The bunch length was well represented by a power function of beam current with an exponent of 0.197 at currents lower than 35 mA or 0.30 at high currents. The experimental results suggest that the longitudinal coupled-bunch beam instability takes place at low beam currents and the turbulent instability dominates at high currents. It was also found from the three-dimensional bunch shape measurements that the bunch shape tended to blow up at high currents.

Notes: 1. Cardiohaemodynamic changes have been studied in beagle dogs treated with intravenous injections of either 300 μg/kg of N-(2-hydroxyethyl) nicotinamide nitrate (SG-75) or 30 μg/kg of glyceryl trinitrate three times a day for 1 -2 months. Throughout the experimental period, no significant changes in general behaviour, body weights and plasma levels of enzymes and substrates were observed in either the SG-75- or glyceryl-trinitrate-treated groups.2. At 1 and 2 months after the start of chronic drug administrations, the dogs were anaesthetized and measurements were made of resting systemic blood pressure, pulse pressure, heart rate, right atrial pressure, coronary blood flow, aortic blood flow, left ventricular (LV) pressure and LVdP/dt: there were no significant differences between non-treated dogs and dogs treated chronically with SG-75 or glyceryl trinitrate.3. The effects of the acute intravenous administration of SG-75 and glyceryl trinitrate were examined in dogs pretreated intravenously with SG-75 (300 μg/kg) and glyceryl trinitrate (30 μg/kg), respectively, three times a day for 1-2 months. The depressor and coronary vasodilator responses to the two drugs remained unchanged in comparison with those in non-treated dogs.4. These results indicated that, with the doses used, neither SG-75 nor glyceryl trinitrate produced changes in sensitivity or tolerance after long-term intravenous administration.

Notes: Summary In 1974, six patients with incapacitating unilateral Ménière's disease were given an empiric treatment with intratympanic gentamycin sulfate via the eustachian tube using a tubal catheter with a small side-branch. These patients then showed excellent results with relief from vertigo over a 13-year period. Since 1980, we have treated patients suffering from Ménière's disease with isosorbide. When patients could not be controlled with this therapy, isosorbide was given in addition to intratympanic gentamycin therapy using a tubal catheter. Of 75 patients with Ménière's disease who received gentamycin and isosorbide therapy, 41 patients could be evaluated by the classification for Ménière's disease proposed by the American Academy of Opthalmology and Otolaryngology (AAOO). Subsequent results showed that vertigo improved in 73% of the patients. According to the AAOO classification, 11 patients (27%) were group A, 16 patients (39%) were group B, and 4 patients (10%) were group C. Eleven patients were group D (27%) and experienced persistent vertigo despite treatment. Our experiences show that patients with severe Ménière's disease can be readily treated with intratympanic gentamycin therapy using a tubal catheter, even on an outpatient basis. This treatment is also a most effective treatment, as it allows the effects of isosorbide to be obtained with smaller doses of gentamycin sulfate.

Notes: Summary According to a nationwide survery in 1977 an average of 54.7% of Menière's disease patients were unable to function normally in their daily lives. These patients mostly complained of repeated attacks of vertigo (male 40.3%, female 29.2%) (Watanabe et al. 1980). For the purpose of improving the repeated attacks of vertigo, Isosorbide as an oral hyperosmotic diuretic was first administered orally to 21 patients with Menière's disease from November 1979 to January 1981 for reducing the endolymphatic hydrops that can be presumed to be of pathogenetic importance. The electrocochleographic examinations were carried out on these patients at the same time. Usually, the SP/AP wave form in the electrocochleographic examinations appears to be more abnormal in patients with a fluctuating hearing loss or a flat hearing loss. The average of negative SP/AP in 24 patients with Menière's disease was 0.54. The indication of Isosorbide administration was determined by this particular SP/AP wave abnormality, and clinical effects of Isosorbide for the patients with Menière's disease were evaluated. In 18 patients who experienced relief, attack of vertigo did not occur in 12 (63%) and vertigo was relieved in six (31%). In two patients with long administration, hearing improvement could already be observed during the period of treatment. The electrocochleographic examinations showed a decrease in the SP/AP wave form. In two patients with short administration, hearing loss was temporarily observed in middle and low frequencies; the hearing loss later improved more than before treatment, but the SP/AP wave abnormality was still observed after treatment in these patients. In only one patient, aggravation of hearing was observed after administration, but whether it was a side effect or not, remains to be understood. The period of observation of these results was a mean value of 4 months and 12 days. The Isosorbide therapy in patients with Menière's disease is expected to replace saccus surgery.

Notes: Abstract One of the disadvantages of applying an a-Si:H thin-film transistor (TFT) to an active matrix-addressed liquid crystal (LC) panel is that a TFT with an a-Si:H has a very large photo-leakage current because of the high photo-conductivity of an a-Si:H itself. We have tried decreasing the photo-leakage current by varying the thickness of an a-Si:H layer (L) in TFTs and investigated the characteristics of TFTs, mainly drain voltage versus drain current containing photo-leakage current (I ph). As a result, it is shown that lnI ph is proportional to InL, and its gradient is 1.5–2.0. We assume that the thinner an a-Si:H layer is, the more effective the recombination of carriers at the interface states is forI ph. We have applied TFT with a very thin a-Si:H layer (∼30nm) to a full-color active matrix-addressed LC panel for a moving picture display and realized a display of good quality under illuminated condition of 5×104lx without a shading layer in it.

Notes: Abstract The average polarization of the nucleus12B (bound state) produced in the polarized-muon capture reaction12C(μ −,v μ )12B was measured by the muon spin resonance method in a pulsed muon beam. The polarization of12B was maintained completely under a magnetic field of 3 kG in a Grafoil target. After the observed result was corrected for the contribution from the excited states of12B, Pav (ground state) was deduced to be 0.462±0.053. This result yieldsg P /g A =10.1 −2.6 +2.4 , which is almost consistent with the PCAC prediction.
