    Notes: Abstract There is a steady and nonlinear relationship between the levels of both phenylpyruvic acid (PPA) and o-hydroxyphenylacetic acid (oOPAA) in urine and the plasma levels of phenylalanine (phe) in children more than two years of age with phenylketonuria (PKU). If phe levels in blood rise above 0.35 mM (5.8 mg/100 ml) both aromatic acids are found regularly in urine. Typically, urinary concentrations of PPA are about 5 times higher than those of oOPAA. This report is based on the analysis of 94 samples from 51 children, on or off diet.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Für die Bestimmung von freiem Pentachlorphenol in der Luft und im Blut wurden leistungsfähige chromatographische Routineverfahren ausgearbeitet. Für die Raumluftbestimmung wird Pentachlorphenol durch Einleiten von Luft in einer Vorlage angereichert und nach Aufarbeitung in freier Form durch Hochdruck-Flüssigkeits-Chromatographie quantitativ erfaßt. Alternativ kann die Analyse nach Derivatisierung durch Kapillar-Gaschromatographie erfolgen. Freies Pentachlorphenol im Vollblut wird nach Aufarbeitung und Derivatisierung durch Kapillar-Gaschromatographie in Verbindung mit dem Elektroneneinfang-Detektor quantitativ bestimmt. Bei den beschriebenen chromatographischen Methoden sind die Eichkurven über den angegebenen Konzentrationsbereich linear. Die gaschromatographische Trennung blieb über den gesamten Untersuchungszeitraum völlig reproduzierbar. Die problemlose Derivatisierung läßt die beschriebene gaschromatographische Methode in Verbindung mit einem automatischen Probengeber für das biological monitoring auch größerer Kollektive geeignet erscheinen.
    Notes: Summary Efficient chromatographic procedures for the determination of free pentachlorophenol in air and in blood have been developed. Free pentachlorophenol from the indoor environment is preconcentrated in an impinger. Following a simple extraction, it is detected by high performance liquid chromatography without derivatisation. An alternate method is capillary gas chromatography of a suitable derivative. Unchanged pentachlorophenol in whole blood is similarly derivatised and determined quantitatively by capillary gas chromatography using an electron capture detector. The calibration curves of the described chromatographic methods were linear within the specified concentration range. Reproducibility of gas chromatographic separation remained unchanged during the whole research period. Owing to its relative simplicity, the described gas chromatographic method is advantageous for the biological monitoring of large collectives.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Eine gaschromatographische Methode zum Nachweis von Tetrodotoxin im Obduktionsmaterial wird beschrieben. Das Derivat (2-Amino-6-hydroxymethyl-8-hydroxychinazolin, C9-Base), das sich durch die Einwirkung der Alkalilauge auf Tetrodotoxin gewinnen ließ, wurde schließlich durch Gaschromatographic nachgewiesen. Die Massenspektren der trimethylsilyerten C9-Base werden neben den Ergebnissen der gaschromatographischen Untersuchung von acht tödlichen Intoxikationsfällen angegeben.
    Notes: Abstract A gas Chromatographic method for the detection of tetrodotoxin in autopsy material is described. The derivative (2-amino-6-hydroxymethyl-8-hydroxyquinazoline, C9-base), which was obtained from tetrodotoxin by alkali treatment, was finally detected by gas chromatography. The mass spectra of the trimethylsilylated (TMS) C9-base are presented together with the result of a gas Chromatographic investigation of 8 cases of fatal intoxication.

    Notes: Abstract The growth of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) is severely inhibited by boron starvation, but a foliar treatment with boric acid can transitorily alleviate the deficiency symptoms. The 10B(n ,α)7 Li nuclear reaction has been used to study boron transport in the plant after foliar application. More than 98% of the boron supplied remained at the point where it was applied to the leaves, and less than 2% was useful to the growth of the treated plant. This small “efficient” portion of boron was quite mobile. It was distributed to the different parts of the plant, then was transferred from the oldest parts to the newly formed leaves. Physiological and agronomical implications of these data are discussed.

    Notes: Summary Impurities in commercially available nitromethane have been determined by gas-liquid chromatography using six different column packings. Besides nitromethane, 1-nitropropane, 2-nitropropane, acetonitrile, methanol, small amounts of ethanol and acetaldehyde have been detected. The presence of formaldehyde, ethyl acetate and acetone is probable. Mixtures containing comparable amounts of the four nitroalkanes could be separated on all columns, but plots of logarithms of the retention times vs. carbon number or boiling points of the nitroalkanes or column temperatures were linear only in case of columns packed with Porapak R and Q.

    Notes: Summary Porous silica microparticles designed for modern liquid chromatography have proven effective in gas chromatography. Columns of 35–50 cm gave plate heights as low as 3.3 particle diameters and speeds of 2400 theoretical plates per second or 500 effective theoretical plates per second. Inlet pressures up to 70 atmospheres were required using hydrogen as carrier gas. The particles as received were too retentive for fast chromatography and gave asymmetric peaks. A coating of fluorosilicone oil overcame both problems. Other coatings were less effective. Bonded phases proved less satisfactory on both counts and also gave substantially less efficient columns and greater flow resistance. Column efficiency and flow resistance were sharply dependent on physical properties of the particles. The most efficient packing was clearly spherical particles of 5–10 μm diameter with narrow size distribution, pore diamters about 50 nm, BET surface areas of 25–50 m2/g and surfaces modified with trifluoropropyl silicone. A six-component hydrocarbon sample was separated in 33 s with a resolution of 4 for the most difficult pair and in 2.6 s with a minimal resolution. Performance was limited by end effects and by available pressure so that much better performance can be expected from longer columns and higher pressures.

R) configuration of isovaline (=2-ethylalanine) was proved for the peptide antibiotics antiamoebin, Tü 165 (CBS 382.62), stilbellin, samarosporin (=emerimicin IV), suzukacillin B (A), trichotoxin A-40 and A-50. This contradicts the previously reported L-configuration for isovaline in antiamoebin and emerimicin IV. The configuration was determined by GC of the N-trifluoroacetyl-isovaline n-propyl ester on glass capillary columns coated with the chiral stationary phase N-propionyl-L-valine tert.-butylamide polysiloxane (Chirasil Val). The D-configuration of the isovaline from trichotoxin A-40 was also established independently using GC of N-pentafluoro-propionyl-isovaline (+)-3-methyl-2-butyl esters on glass capillary columns coated with OV 17.

    Notes: Summary Xylenol isomers can be resolved on most polyols (sugars or sugar alcohols) and polyethers (polyethylene glycol or polypropylene glycol) with hydrogen-bonding interaction. They are separated on vinical polyols which have more hydroxy hydrogen than tetrol, and even on vicinal triol when its hydroxy hydrogen is acidic (stronger proton donor). The stronger is the hydrogen bonding interaction between xylenols and the liquid phase, the better is the separation of 2,4- and 2,5-xylenol, and the poorer the separation of 2,4-and 2,3-xylenol.

    Notes: This paper examines the problem of the eccentric loading of a rigid circular disc-shaped foundation embedded in bonded contact with an istropic elastic medium of infinite extent. The solution of this problem is achieved by using a Hankel integral transform technique which reduces the problem to two sets of dual integral equations. These systems of dual integral equations represent the equations which govern the axisymmetric and asymmetric states of deformation induced by the loaded foundation. Explicit results are derived both for the displacement and rotation of the circular foundation and for the contact stress at the interface.

This technique may be used to consider anchor systems involving arbitrary anchor inclination and depth beneath the soil surface, as well as arbitrary number, shape, size and spacing of underreams. The approach is largely analytical in nature and involves only a fraction of the computation required for a finite element analysis.Consideration is given to the effects of anchor depth and inclination to the soil surface, and the spacing and number of underreams upon the elastic response of anchor systems. On the basis of the result from this study, a simple, approximate method for estimating the response of multiple underream anchors is proposed. This approach involves the use of several interaction charts, which are presented in the paper, and can be used as a hand method for estimating the load-displacement behaviour of quite general anchor systems to sufficient accuracy for most practical purposes. The use of the approximate approach is illustrated by an example.

    Notes: A new concept based on the use of a function expressed as a (complete) polynomial expansion in terms of the three invariants of the stress tensor is proposed for deriving yield, failure and plastic potential functions for use in plasticity based constitutive laws. A mathematical interpretation and physical meaning of the proposed concept are provided by using the idea of the singular nature of constiutive matrices in incremental hypoelastic laws. It is suggested that the proposed function and (polynomial) forms of material moduli can be synonymous. A number of specialized forms of the general function are adopted and their values at failure from advanced three-dimensional tests for a number of (geological) media are evaluated. The results indicate the possibility that there exist invariant numbers associated with the functions(s) that may apply to a wide range of materials. Some ideas on implementation of the proposed concept are also presented.

    Notes: The analysis of the stability of slopes using limiting equilibrium considerations necessitates the determination of the critical slip surface which yields the minimal factor of safety. The numerous methods currently available for slope stability analysis provide a procedure for assigning a factor of safety to a given slip surface, but do not consider the problem of identifying the critical conditions.This paper presents an effective minimization procedure based on dynamic programming by which the minimal factor of safety, and the corresponding surface, are determined simultaneously. This procedure SSDP (Slope Stability by Dynamic Programming), couples the minimization scheme with Spencer's method of slope stability analysis. It may be applied to slopes of any geometry, layering, pore pressure and external load distributions. No arbitrary restrictions are placed on the shape of the slip surfaces, and the analysis satisfies all equilibrium equations.Application of the procedure to slope stability problems reported in the literature shows that for a given slip surface the procedure yields factors of safety which are almost identical to those reported, but in every case a more critical slip surface, with a lower factor of safety, may be found.

    Notes: An exact formulation is presented for the problem of a rigid circular body performing harmonic vibrations on an elastic half-space whose shear modulus increases linearly with depth and is interrupted at some finite depth by a frictionless horizontal plane. The static case is derived in the limit of zero frequency vibrations while the known result for the uninterrupted half-space is recovered in either extreme limit of the horizontal frictionless plane coinciding with the surface or when it is pushed down to an infinite depth.It is shown that the maximum effect of the interruption occurs when the frictionless plane is at a depth where the shear modulus is about 1·6 times the surface shear modulus. Furthermore, this maximum effect is equivalent to a reduction of about 5 per cent of the surface shear modulus or a reduction of about 2½ per cent in the natural frequency of the rigid body on an uninterrupted half-space. The important conclusion, therefore, is that irrespective of the depth at which a half-space isso interrupted, the surface shear modulus is still the dominant parameter and that both the increase in shear modulus with depth and the interruption are not only secondary but also opposing effects.

    Notes: One major problem encountered when using the finite element method to simulate the load-deformation behaviour of an elasto-plastic soil mass is that the theoretical collapse load is generally exceeded, and in some cases the numerical solution fails to exhibit a collapse load. A mixed variational principle is used as the basis for developing the governing equations of deformation and the results from this are compared with those obtained from the use of the virtual power equation. The former is found to give improved results and is generalized to include description of finite deformation. An Eulerian frame of reference is used. The method of approximating configuration changes in the numerical solution procedure is found to determine the shape of the load-deformation curve. Finally, a simple method of accounting for anisotropy of yield is presented.

    Notes: A finite element model for the prediction of discrete fracture propagation in rock structures loaded in compression is presented. The model integrates any one of three theories for mixed-mode fracture initiation; it contains an energy balance algorithm for predicting crack increment length, and incorporates recent developments in finite element stress-intensity factor computation.     Notes: A comparative discussion of constitutive rate equations generated by using the hypoelasticity and plasticity theories is presented. If is shown that these two approaches are equivalent for the loading process but differ essentially in defining the unloading (or reverse loading) paths. The multisurface plasticity formulation proves to be more convenient in incorporating memory rules of particular loading events, whereas loading-unloading criteria used in hypoelasticity may result in an unrealistic prediction of material response for some loading paths, and in particular, for cyclic loading.     Notes: The settlement and excess pore pressure are calculated for a column of water-saturated clay in which the permeability and/or shear modulus vary with depth. Several fairly general laws of variation are investigated. In each case, the soil is assumed to have a permeable top surface and to rest on an impervious substrate.For all the variations examined, in which the shear modulus increases with depth below the surface but the permeability of the soil remains constant, the deflection at a given instant after imposition of the load decreases and the degree of settlement increases with increasing rate at which the change with depth takes place. It is found that, when the variation over the height of the column is one order of magnitude or less, the curve of degree-of-consolidation versus time is reasonably wellapproximated by the curve for a homogeneous soil whose modulus equals the depth-averaged value. When, in addition, the permeability decreases with depth, the approximation becomes less accurate.The same approximation, for moderate increase in shear modulus with depth, predicts satisfactorily the process of dissipation of excess pore pressure at a given depth, but breaks down when the variation in modulus is large.Finally, it is shown that the effect of variable modulus on the settlement is greater than of a comparable variation in permeability.

    Notes: When using numerical methods in soil mechanics, one often needs to define a yield surface in three-dimensional principal-stress space. A special class of yield surfaces, given by J = (p+a)α(1-β sin 3ν)n, where ν is the Lode angle, is considered from the point of view of convexity and agreement with experimental data.     Notes: We continue our study of the consolidation of inhomogeneous clay soils with an analysis of the response of a soil mass, whose shear modulus increases linearly with depth, to axially symmetric pressure on its surface. This extends the work reported in Part I on the corresponding one-dimensional problem of a clay column, and generalizes researches of Gibson and coworkers on the elastic model of the soil (i.e., the initial response).Because of great mathematical complexity when Poisson's ratio is allowed to assume arbitrary values, we have confined ourselves (as did Gibson in several of his papers) to variations of the modulus from a zero surface value, this being in reasonable accord with published test results on London clay. The deflection of points within this region, the deflection relative to the central one (that is, the shape of the deformed loading area), as well as the absolute deflection of surface points exterior to the load.

    Notes: The spontaneous shear band formation in the biaxial test on dry sand samples with constant cell pressure is treated as a bifurcation problem. The constitutive response of sand is described in terms of mobilized friction and dilatancy. Dilatancy is looked upon as an internal constraint and the hardening rule is expressed in terms of an adequate dimensionless stress measure. Owing to fail of normality in sand, localization always occurs in the hardening regime. The theoretical solution of the shear band inclination is a geometrical mean of the classical Coulomb and Roscoe solutions and is in good agreement with the experimental data. The incipient shear modulus is proportional to the stress level and can be estimated to be also proportional to these cant modulus.

    Notes: The elastostatic problem of an infinite elastic medium containing an axially-loaded rigid cylindrical inclusion is investigated. Seepage parameters were evaluated quantitatively and the influence of the leakiness of sheetpiles in a porous medium underlain by an impervious horizontal stratum was determined. The case of a single sheetpile was first considered, and the effect of the depth of penetration and coefficient of leakiness on the total rate of flow and on the values of the exit gradient was analysed. Next, the flow under an impervious dam was considered to assess the accuracy of the method. Finally, the case of seepage under a dam with leaky sheetpiles at both ends was studied, including the effect of the leaky sheetpiles on the uplift pressure acting along the foundation of the dam. Patterns of seepage through the flow line deformation that is caused by the leakiness of the sheetpiles.

    Notes: A new one-dimensional model for penetration analysis of a rigid projectile into a soil target is presented. The soil medium is represented by a set of discs of constant thickness, responding in the radial direction under plain strain regime. When penetration through a typical disc occurs, the projectile displaces soil material and a radial plastic shock wave propagates in the disc. The interaction pressure between the projectile and soil material is compatible with the motion of the contact boundary, between them. The instantaneous resistive force is obtained by summation of the contributions of all the discs which are in contact with the nose surface of the projectile. Soil is considered as a ‘floating’ ideally locking material, in which the locking volumetric strain is adjusted to the physical stress-strain properties of the soil material. Friction between projectile and soil is assumed to be negligible. Comparison is made with both twodimensional computer program results and experimental data, and very good agreement is observed. Comparison with other analytical methods reveals that the present model most closely resembles existing experimental results and permits further analysis of the problem as predictions of target response and of stress distribution on the projectile nose. The calculations require very small amounts of computer time. Analysis with the present model yields an efficient and comprehensive means to analyse penetration and perform parameter analysis.

In the discretization process the hybrid deformation model requires an expansion of the displacement field as well as of the Lagrange multipliers at the boundary.     Notes: Univariate minimization is considered for constrained optimization with the Kavlie-Moe extended interior penalty. An algorithm is derived using a linear-plus-hyperbolic fit suggested by R. L. Fox for interior penalties. A linear extension to the linear-plus-hyperbolic permits rapid convergence with extended interior alties. However, constraint deletion and approximation of remaining constraints before each minimization also characterize the environment. These and other complexities impede accurate fitting of larger intervals. Thus, following Murray, a mixed strategy is adopted with function comparison reductions of interval size to supplement curve fitting.Analysis shows how quadratic and cubic fit searches break down under certain limiting conditions of interior, extended and exterior penalties. A quadratic-extended linear curve derived for exterior penalties and the linear-plus-hyperbolic similarly fail on extended interior penalties. Examples of constrained optimization with extended interior penalties were run on the Stanford IBM 370/168 computer. A stiffened two-panel box provides eight optimization variables with many constraints on demensions and against failure. The extended linear-plus-hyperbolic surpasses cubic and linear-plus hyperbolic fitting, especially when the Fiacco-McCormick multiplier for the penalty becomes small. The value of feedback from curve fitting to decide function comparison use is also illustrated.

    Notes: A method for improving the convergence rate of iterative processes is presented. This method monitors the sequence of approximations produced by an iterative process, and generates a new iterative process, or sequence of processes, each with more rapid convergence characteristics than the previous one. This method of process modification can be applied to many iterative techniques currently in use. Examples of application of the method are given, using both nonlinear and linear systems. In one of these examples it is shown that the method can be applied to a divergent iterative process, producing a convergent one. It is also shown how the technique can be applied to equations of one variable, yielding a method with convergence characteristics similar to those of Newton's method, but without the explicit calculation of derivatives.

    Notes: A nonlinear analysis is carried out for the motion of the inviscid, incompressible fluid in a two-dimensional, rigid, open container which is subjected to forced sinusoidal pitching oscillation. Firstly, the problem is defined as a nonlinear initial-boundary value problem by the use of a governing differential equation and boundary conditions. Next, the problem is formulated in the form of a pseudo-variational principle, which provides a basis for our discretization. The finite element method and finite difference method are used spacewise and timewise, respectively. Due to the strong nonlinearity of the problem, an incremental method is used for the numerical analysis. Numerical results obtained by the present method are compared with solutions of the linear theory and experimental data. The difference between linear and nonlinear analysis has been clearly indicated.

The numerical technique developed permits a computer solution of the majority carrier transport equation, the nonlinear heat conduction equation, in which the heat generation term is obtained from the solution of the transport equation, and a number of auxiliary differential equations.The simplified model of the MOS transistor adopted will not, of course, produce any information on the actual operation of the short channel MOS transistor of practical interest today, but the numerical scheme can be extended to simulate short channel models that are of great practical interest.

    Notes: It is shown how the convergence requirements for a finite element may be written as a set of linear constraints on the stiffness matrix. It is then attempted to construct a best possible stiffness matrix. The constraint equations restrict the way in which these stiffness terms may be chosen; however, there is normally still room for improving or optimizing an element. It is demonstrated how an element stiffness matrix may be found using rigid body, constant strain and higher order deformation modes. Further, it is shown how the constraint equations may be exploited in deriving an ‘energy orthogonality theorem’. This theorem opens the door to a whole new class of simple finite elements which automatically satisfy the convergence requirements. Examples of deriving plane stress and plate bending elements are given.

    Notes: Convection-diffusion equations are difficult to solve when the convection term dominates because most solution methods give solutions which oscillate in space. Previous criteria based on the one-dimensional convection-diffusion equation have shown that finite difference and Galerkin (linear or quadratic basis functions) will not give oscillatory solutions provided the Peclet number times the mesh size (Pe Δx) is below a critical value. These criteria are based on the solution at the nodes, and ensure that the nodal values are monotone. Similar criteria are developed here for other methods: quadratic Galerkin with upwind weighting, cubic Galerkin, orthogonal collocation on finite elements with quadratic, cubic or quartic polynomials using Lagrangian interpolation, cubic or quartic polynominals using Hermite interpolation, and the method of moments. The nodal values do not oscillate for collocation or moments methods with Hermite cubic polynomials regardless of the value of Pe Δx.A new criterion is developed for all methods based on the monotonicity of the solutions throughout the domain. This criterion is more restrictive than one based only on the nodal values. All methods that are second order (Δx2) or better in truncation error give oscillatory solutions (based on the entire domain) unless Pe Δx is below a critical value. This value ranges from 2 for finite difference methods to 4·6 for Hermite, quartic, collocation methods.

    Notes: We extend the variation principle used in the global element method for self-adjoint elliptic problems1, to problems containing advective terms. Used with the global element formalism, the extended principle yields a uniform framework for treating advective or boundary layer problems, with the attractive feature that the implicit treatment of interface conditions between elements yields an effective decoupling between ‘boundary layer’ and ‘interior’ parts of the solution. As a numerical example, we solve the one-dimensional model problem of Christie and Mitchell3, obtaining high accuracy for Peclet numbers up to 106 with no sign of instability. These results suggest that, given a suitable choice of global elements, the decoupling is very effective in damping the oscillations found in standard finite difference or finite element treatment.

    Notes: A dual load method of truss analysis is presented that allows highly nonlinear member behaviour to be followed. In particular, a brittle type of strut behaviour is considered. The method assumes that the inelastic strut response is known and that piecewise linearization of the behaviour is acceptable. An example is given to illustrate the type of problem that can be handled. The example involves negative stiffness of the members and consequently attention must be given to the equation solving procedure for the structure. A comparison is made with some observed test results.

    Notes: Several computer codes have incorporated the ‘overlay’ material models: the volume element, which is characteristic of the material, is composed of sub-elements with different kinematic hardening, perfectly plastic or even viscoplastic flow rules and different elastic properties, these sub-elements exhibiting all, however, the same total strain.1,2In this paper it is demonstrated how the simple mathematical framework we first proposed for elastic-plastic structures with kinematic hardening material,3 and we extended to some elastic viscoplastic ones,4 can easily be applied to these particular ‘overlay’ materials.One of the interesting advantages of this approach is a straightforward analysis of structural response under cyclic loadings by applying the linear elastic analysis.

    Notes: A numerical Laplace transform inversion technique is described, which is a modification of the inversion method using an exponential series representation. By adding an auxiliary function and using Erdélyi's inversion formula, the proposed technique provides the inverse approximation with improved accuracy near t = 0. Numerical illustrations shows that this procedure also works in cases when the original method of schapery fails to give satisfactory results.

    Notes: The post-buckling behaviour of a cantilever column of variable moment of inertia with tip load is studied by means of a simple numerical iterative scheme. The governing equation of equilibrium is formulated using the axial and transverse displacement quantities, and applying linear constitutive and nonlinear kinematic relations. Numerical results obtained by numerical iterative procedure are presented in the form of curves showing the relation between non-dimensional tip-deflection and non-dimensional load for different values of shear correction factors and taper ratios.

    Notes: The non-linear, small-disturbance, velocity-potential equation for steady flow over a thin, symmetric, non-lifting aerofoil is solved by the finite element method. Pressure distributions are computed for flow regimes ranging from incompressible flow to transonic flow with weak shocks. The governing equation is linearized by a sequence of linear equations which is solved iteratively using Galerkin's method. The infinite flow domain is replaced by a finite but sufficiently large domain which is discretized by bilinear rectangular elements. Boundary conditions of the Neumann type are imposed along an approximate boundary in accordance with classical thin-aerofoil theory. Dirichlet conditions are imposed along the far-field boundary from an asymptotic solution valid in the far-field.Convergence of solution algorithms occurs rapidly for all subsonic flows, but fails for transonic or mixed flows when the supersonic bubble is larger than one-half on an element. For transonic flows a new upwinding scheme is used to modify the finite element formulations for elements within the supersonic bubble. The scheme, governed by two parameters, accounts for the proper zone of influence for those elements within the bubble by excluding the influence of iterative downwind forces on the solution at upwind nodes. The upwinding scheme permits convergence of the iterative solution algorithm and also captures the weak compression shock which forms automatically in the solution process without the need or use of shock elements.

    Notes: The purpose of the paper is two-fold: Firstly, we develop stream function--vorticity and primitive variable finite element models of two-dimensional barotropic equations that satisfy the conservation of mean vorticity, mean squared vorticity (or enstrophy) and mean kinetic energy, and scondly, we present a comparative study of a number of numerical schemes for their accuracy in phase speed as well as in amplitude calculations for a two-dimensional, time-dependent, stream function--vorticity equation for periodic fluid motion in a channel. A circular vortex is placed in a uniform channel flow of a constant velocity (U) as an initial condition. This example makes it easier to identify the cause of phase speed error, either due to linear or non-linear processes, and furthermore, to find a satisfactory scheme for time integration. The numerical schemes compared include: Arakawa Jacobian,1 Arakawa-Matsuno scheme, Galerkin finite element, Lax-Wendroff, leap-frog, and Crank-Nicholson. The effect of a variational adjustment (see Sasaki16) is also studied. Computational time, RMS errors in stream function and vorticity, and the conservation of the mean kinetic energy and enstrophy are compared at the end of 120 (one period) and 240 (two periods) time steps. The study indicates that the numerical scheme that employs finite elements in space (same as Arakawa Jacobian) and Crank-Nicholson in time is the most accurate among the schemes studied.

    Notes: An approximate analysis method for calculating local and system geometric imperfection influences on the displacements, stresses and buckling load of imperfect truss structures, is developed. The structural response, as a function of the design variables, is expressed in this approximate analysis which is much faster and cheaper than the ‘accurate’ analysis. The accurate analysis for a particular design is used as a base for each approximate analysis which then gives the response information needed for other designs in the neighbourhood about the base point design. Comparison of the approximate behaviour predictions with accurate results based on the more refined analysis methods shows that the quality of the proposed approximate analysis procedure is adequate for guiding a structural design procedure. It is evident that the approximate analysis is capable of describing the nonlinear behaviour of the structure, but when nonlinearity increases, the quality of the approximate analysis tends to deteriorate.

    Notes: This paper deals with the finite element calculation of those transient temperature fields which develops in a body, due to a sudden change in temperature of fluid being in contact with the surface. A special co-ordinate transformation is applied to approach the temporal change of the surface temperature. By analysing the interpolability of the temperature distribution it is proved that the sizes of elements near to the surface are critical in this respect. For the sizes of critical elements situated on the boundaries of the body, criteria formed from dimensionless numbers are determined, by the use of which a subdivision method is described. The application of the method is presented on a two-dimensional heat conduction problem, and the results are compared with the analytical solution.

    Notes: This paper describes the hitherto unpublicized flexibilities inherent in the longevity-based Frontal concept of Irons. Diverse applications such as Guyan-reduced superelement generation, substructuring, matrix storage in Frontal form, Frontal matrix multiplication and Frontal Subspace Iteration method are discussed. It is observed that most of these extensions require only minor modifications to Irons'original program. The first part of the paper reviews the development in the Frontal method so far. Part II describes the experiences related to the largest multi-algorithm Frontal package reported to date. Suggestions for a simplified Frontal algorithm are also given and would be useful to those who wish to write their own solver, or improve an existing one. An algorithm and a computer program for Frontal multiplication are also provided.
