Notes: Abstract Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) at concentrations more than 1×10−8 M markedly suppressed the cell proliferation and release of soluble molecules of interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2R), CD4 (sCD4) and CD8 (sCD8) from phytohemagglutinin (PHA)-stimulated normal human mononuclear cells (MNC) in a dose-related manner. To further elucidate the subcellular mechanism of the inhibitory effect of PGE2 on PHA-stimulated MNC, intracellular concentration of glutathione (GSH) in PHA-stimulated MNC was sequentially measured from day 1 to day 3 by enzymic method. Furthermore, the effect of PGE2 on nuclear DNA including DNA strand breaks in alkali treatment and DNA fragmentation (apoptosis) of PHA-stimulated MNC were also measured. We found intracellular GSH levels were significantly decreased in the early stage of lymphocyte activation (day 1), but no evidence of increased DNA stand breaks or apoptotic process appeared in 3-day culture. In addition, butathione sulfoximine (a specific GSH inhibitor) and dibutyryl cyclic AMP also exhibited both proliferation inhibition and GSH-decreasing effect on PHA-stimulated MNC as well as PGE2. These results suggest that the immunosupressive effect of PGE2 is mediated by the decreased generation of intracellular GSH, but not by the increased DNA strand breaks or apoptotic mechanism in the cells.

Notes: Summary Capillary Pumped Loop (CPL) is a thermal management device for advanced spacecrafts. This paper presents the operating principles of a CPL and the design characteristics of the components. Another purpose of this experiment was to build up a transparent loop in order to better determine and observe the internal thermofluid dynamics. The results indicated that the CPL could be in normal operation under various heat modes. Observation also told Non-Condensed Gas (NCG) was moving and collecting to somewhere between the condenser section.

Notes: High crystalline quality ZnBeSe epilayers were grown nearly lattice matched to GaAs (001) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy with a Be–Zn co-irradiation. A (1×2) reflection high energy electron diffraction pattern was observed after the Be–Zn co-irradiation of the GaAs (2×4) surface. A high p-type doping level of 1.5×1018 cm−3 was achieved for (N+Te) triple-delta doping (δ3 doping) of ZnBeSe epilayers, whereby three adjacent δ layers of N and Te were deposited in each doping cycle. X-ray diffraction measurements reveal that (N+Te) δ3-doped ZnBeSe samples with a Te concentration of about 0.5% remain of very high crystalline quality with an X-ray rocking curve linewidth of 51 arcsec. Low temperature photoluminescence measurements show some emission peaks related to Te2 clusters and/or Ten≥3 clusters. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: By means of x-ray phase analysis, it is shown that all the interstitial Sm2(Fe1−xAlx)17Ny nitrides and the parent compounds crystallize in Th2Zn17-type structure for x≤0.4. The lattice constants of the parent compounds increase linearly with Al concentration. The introduction of nitrogen leads to a further increase in lattice constants, but the amplitude of the increase decreases with increasing Al concentration. The introduction of nitrogen leads to an increase of Curie temperature Tc . The composition dependence of Tc of the parent compounds exhibits a maximum, whereas Tc of the nitride decreases monotonously with increasing Al concentration from 750 K for x=0 to 313 K for x=0.4. The mean magnetic moments of iron ions in both nitrides and parents decrease monotonously with increasing Al concentration.

Notes: A new method to get 413.7-nm violet coherent radiation by using second-harmonic generation and sum-frequency mixing of radiation from a 1341.4- and 1079.5-nm dual-wavelength Nd:YALO3 laser in a LiIO3 crystal is reported in this communication. First, the 670.7-nm red coherent radiation is obtained by second-harmonic generation of 1341.4-nm radiations in a LiIO3 crystal, and then the 670.7- and 1079.5-nm radiations are mixed again in a second LiIO3 crystal to get 413.7-nm radiation. The phase-matching angles are obtained for both nonlinear optical processes. The experimental results agree well with calculated results.

Notes: Pure and Cr2O3-doped Bi12SiO20 (BSO) single crystals have been successfully grown using Czochralski technique. Doping 30 ppm of Cr2O3 into BSO single crystals has lowered the transmittance and increased the photochromic effect of the materials significantly. Although the overall diffraction efficiency of photorefractive effect in response to 633 nm laser beam has not been increased, the intrinsic diffraction efficiency (ηi) and the response time constant (τ) have been improved markedly. The applicability of the BSO crystals in the red light regime is thus increased.

Notes: All four possible chemical reactivity patterns, namely, outdiffusion of Te (metal-Cd alloy formation), Cd outdiffusion (metal telluride compound formation), comparable chemical reactivity of the metal towards both Cd and Te (no Cd or Te outdiffusion), and chemical inertness of the metal towards CdTe, were differentiated via the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) technique from a study of the interaction of nine different metals toward CdTe powder. The fusion signatures of free Cd or Te, exotherms due to compound or alloy formation, along with the thermal transitions of the metal telluride and/or the intermetallic were used for this purpose. These reactivity patterns are discussed within the framework of two different thermodynamic models. Both virgin and chemically etched CdTe surfaces were examined, and found to exhibit rather different reactivity trends towards the metal. The ramifications of these results in terms of the electronic properties of metal/CdTe contacts are discussed. Finally, DSC is shown to be useful for probing alterations in the CdTe surface chemistry as a result of the etch treatment.

Notes: Aspergillus species are common airborne fungi that have been identified as causative agents of extrinsic bronchial asthma. More than 10 allergens from A. fumigatus have been recently characterized by cDNA cloning. The objective of this study is to identify A. fumigatus allergens through immunoblot analysis using sera from asthmatic patients.IgE-binding components of A. fumigatus and IgE cross-reactivity among allergens of different prevalent airborne fungal species were analysed by immunoblot and immunoblot inhibition, respectively, using sera from asthmatic patients. The N-terminal amino acid sequences of major allergens identified were determined by Edman degradation.Among two batches (70 and 41 sera) of asthmatic sera tested, 19 (27%) and 14 (34%), respectively, have IgE immunoblot reactivity towards components of A. fumigatus. A 34-kDa protein that reacts with IgE antibodies in 15 (79%) and 11 (79%) of the 19 and 14 positive samples, respectively, may be considered a major allergen of A. fumigatus. The N-terminal amino acid sequences of the 34 kDa major allergen and the 30.5 and 30 kDa IgE-binding components of A. fumigatus showed sequence identity to that of the vacuolar serine proteinase from A. fumigatus. The results from immunoblot inhibition show IgE cross-reactivity among major allergens of A. fumigatus, P. notatum and P. oxalicum. Results obtained suggest that the 34 kDa major allergen of A. fumigatus may be a vacuolar serine proteinase. There is IgE cross-reactivity among serine proteinase allergens of A. fumigatus, P. notatum and P. oxalicum.

Notes: A monoclonal antibody (MoAb P40) against the 68 kD major allergen of penicillium notatum (P. notatum) was obtained by immunizing the mouse with a crude extract of P. notatum. Analysed by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and immunoblotting, P40 reacted with two different isoforms of the 68 kD component of P. notatum with pIs of 5.4 and 5.5. In addition to P. notatum, P40 showed positive ELISA activity to Aspergillus fumigatus (A. fumigatus) but not to components of six other fungi including Alternaria porri, Cladosporium cladosporoides, Aureobasidium pullulans, Fusarium solani, Rhizopus arrhizus and Candida albicans. Analysed by ELISA, MoAb P40 also showed positive activity to two (P. frequentans and P. roseopurpureum) of the 10 other Penicillium species and two (A. terreus and A. flavus) of the four other Aspergillus species tested. SDS-PAGE and immunoblotting studies demonstrated P40 positive reactivity to components with MW of about 67 kD in all these Penicillium and Aspergillus species with positive ELISA activity to P40. Furthermore, immunoblotting activity of MoAb P40 to the 67 kD component of A. niger was also observed. The epitope of the 68 kD allergen of P. notatum recognized by MoAb P40 was resistant to treatment of periodate oxidation with concentration of NaIO4 up to 20 mm. This MoAb may thus be useful in the characterization and purification of the 68 kD allergen from crude extracts, and in the molecular cloning of allergen genes.
