Summary Cardiac output, stroke volume, arterial and central venous blood pressure were determined in dogs with experimentally induced complete heart block before and after increasing the heart rate by electrical stimulation to 85–90/min and 115–120/min respectively. The increase in heart rate was accompanied by a slight increase of cardiac output and by a decrease of stroke volume, puls pressure, central venous blood pressure and the hematocrit value. All values returned toward control values when the electrical stimulation was stopped, the heart rate thereby returning to the low values of complete heart block. It is concluded, that during complete heart block with low heart rate venous tone is increased and promtly decreased with elevated frequencies during electrical stimulation. Since the complete heart block resembles the conditions of heart insufficiency, it seems possible that the increased venous blood pressure in patients with heart insufficiency is caused not only by an increase of blood volume but by an increase of venous tone also.
Notes:
