    Notes: In the commonly used sulfite method the consumption of sulfite is determined by iodometry. Since however, the addition of organic substances may interfere with iodometry (e.g. due to chemical reactions with iodine) the gasometric measurement of sulfite oxidation has been developed for analysis of how different culture media may influence the oxygen transfer rate. The striking decrease of sulfite oxidation rate due to addition of culture media to the sulfite solution suggests that adsorption of orgnic components in the gas liquid interface may account for an additional diffusion barrier and thus for a decrease of the oxygen transfer coefficient which in addition gives an explanation for differences between values found by the sulfite method and by aerobic cultivations. Consequently identical values of oxygen transfer rate have been obtained for both systems whenever the sulfite system has been properly adjusted to the aerobic cultivation conditions. In so far, the gasometric sulfite method proved to be a unique tool for rapid determination of factors influencing oxygen transfer rate in fermentation processes which may give rise to a reappraisal as to the relevance of the sulfite method for oxygen transfer optimization.

    Notes: Cells of Chlorella vulgaris, BEIJ. Greifswald 9, were grown on autotrophic and mixotrophic conditions using glucose and acetate as organic substrates. It was shown that these C-sources applicated in a suitable range of concentrations increase the growth rate and the productivity of the algal cultures. The cells grown on mixotrophic conditions have a higher total pigment content and exhibit variations in the ratio chlorophyll a/chlorophyll b.In addition the contents of proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids of the biomass were shown to be dependent on the kind of the organic substrate used.

    Notes: Cassava waste peels may constitute up to 55% of the original tuber. These waste peels were found to contain 41.8% carbohydrate, 1.1% protein, 12.5% ether extract and 4.9%, 4.9% total ash. and 20.8% crude fibre. Studies were conducted to formulate a fermentation medium to convert the waste peels to reducing sugars and to enrich the peels with microbial protein. Amylase producing microorganisms were isolated from rotten cassava tuber discs buried in the soil at different locations. The microorganisms isolated were Aspergillus fumigatus, A. flavus, A. niger, and a Pseudomonas sp. and A. niger; the level of reducing sugar was 20.5 mg/ml. The lowest was by B. subtilis an isolate from fermenting locust bean. Generally the levels of saccharification were higher when the waste media were supplemented with different nitrogen sourses. The crude protein yield in the cassava peel waste media by different microorganisms varied from 5.6% to 17.5%. The highest protein yield was in the waste medium fermented by A. fumigatus followed by A. niger, B. subtilis, Pseudomonas sp. in decreasing order.

    Notes: Candida lipolytica was cultured on a methanol containing medium as the only C source. The influence of different concentrations of methanol and ammonium sulphate and the effect of addition of some biological active materials to the methanol containing medium were studied.Dry cell yield of C. lipolytica and protein content were determined to be 23.1 g of cells/100 g of methanol added and 40.2%, respectively. Total lipids, phospholipids, keto acid and amino acid composition were estimated. The amino acid composition of the protein was comparable to the composition of the other reported single cell proteins (SCP). These results indicate that C. lipolytica is potentially important for fodder use.

    Notes: The review characterizes the submerged and solid state fermentation processes (SF and SSF) for obtaining of microbial biomass protein (MBP) on cellulose- and lignin-containing (CL) agricultural wastes (straw, wine, branches of fruit trees). There are discussed other alternatives as well. The main technological parametres are presented (protein (biomass) yield, degree of available substrate utilization, process efficiency, etc.). The use of a special stirring system of the authors' design for mycelial cultures results in an increase of CL substrate concentration in the initial nutrient medium from 2% to 8%of dry matter (DM) and in a threefold increase of the specific productivity (from 0.07 g biomass/l · h to 0.21 g biomass/l · h). The technological parametres can be increased also in the processes with substrate addition. The obtained preparations are analyzed as to their usefulness for the feeds of ruminants.

    Notes: When glucose is used as C-source extracelluar citric-acid accumulation does not start at the point of N-source exhaustion. A transition phase lasting for about 2-3 hours is observed. It may be assumed that the continuation of growth after the N-source exhaustion coincides with the delay of the citric-acid accumulation. During the course of citric-acid production characteristic interruptions of the glucose uptake and the citric-acid accumulation are found. The findings are discussed in more detail.

    Notes: The influence of flow rate on the cell shape of the yeast Candida hydrocarbofumarica cultivated continuously within a wide range of flow rates (D = 0.05-2.0 h-1) was studied. The cell shape was heterogenic at growth rates from 0.05-0.8 h-1. In some cases the cell size varied depending on the growth rate, evidently due to osmotic phenomena which do not pertain to the growth proper.

    Notes: Effects of exogenous applied lipids being of microbial origin on the water use efficiency (WUE) and the biomass production have been studied in pot and field experiments using crop plants.Lipid mixtures extracted from the cells of Candida maltosa EH 15 increased the WUE (9…16%) and the grain yield (÷x = 10%) of the wheat and barley plants under dry conditions. The fatty acid fraction separated from the lipid mixtures also improved the WUE especially under stress (20…100%) and the biomass production. The phosphatide fraction emulsified with sulfonate containing solvents was not physiologically active.

    Notes: Production of D-amino acid oxidase, L-aromatic aminotransferase and aromatic lactate dehydrogenase by several yeast species was examined. Of 16 strains tested, Trigonopsis variabilis and Rhodosporidium toruloides were found to be most suitable for D-amino acid oxidase production, T. variabilis and Brettanomyces anomalus for L-aromatic aminotransferase production, and Hansenula polymorpha, Cryptococcus terreus, and Candida maltosa for aromatic lactate dehydrogenase production. This selection is based on a high amount of enzyme activity as well as a broad enzyme specificity. The data will be reported here.

    Notes: The present investigation sought the use of Bovine Kidney Cells (BKC) which is a readily available substrate for the cultivation and isolation of measles virus. Results showed that measles virus grew well on BKC, showing identical cytopathologic effect (CPE) of syncytial and giant cell formation also noted for Vero cells. However, the growth on Vero cells was faster indicating a better sensitivity to the measles virus than BKC. The virus replicated and produced CPE in both confluent monolayer and trypsin dispersed cultures. The ability of the virus to form CPE was faster in trypsin-dispersed cells than confluent monolayers.The viral yield in Vero- and BK-cells were compared to assess any difference by analysis of variance. The F-value of 0.824 with degree of freedom 1.34 showed no significant difference at any reasonable confidence interval.

    Notes: Pseudomonas syringae pv. phaseolicola, the causal agent of halo blight disease of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) produces Phaseolotoxin (Nδ-(N′-sulpho-diaminophosphinyl)-L-ornithyl-alanyl-homoarginine)  -  a phytotoxic secondary metabolite  -  under laboratory conditions in a synthetic medium. Permeabilized (EDTA-treatment) and immobilized (Agar Agar) cells of the bacterium are capable of producing Phaseolotoxin.Therefore an “in situ” production of this microbial phytoeffective compound using immobilized and permeabilized cells of Pseudomonas syringae pv. phaseolicola is possible.

    Notes: 153 haploids, including 8 prototrophs, 12 biotin prototrophs and 4 biotin auxotrophs were isolated from Y, F and FB strains of the baker's yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Remaining haploids were dependent on vitamins of B group other than biotin.Obtained haploids were characterized by large cell sizes, a or α mating type, the ability to fermentation of sugars and the assimilation of non-fermented carbon sources.Haploids obtained from the yeast of Y and FB strains a good growth in the synthetic medium.Prototrophic haploids, prototrophic haploids with biotin auxotrophs and biotin prototrophs with biotin auxotrophs were crossed. 89 prototrophic hybrids capable of growth in synthetic medium without vitamins were selected out of 178 hybrids obtained.Hybrids are characterized by features typical for baker's yeast; however, not all of them are capable of sporulation.As result of selection, prototrophic hybrids and 16 hybrids characterized by a good increase of biomass in molasses medium were chosen.The efficiency of the biomass of hybrids designated as YY 3040/2, YY 3040/3 and FFB 1910/2 is considerably higher than one obtained from the cultivation of the industrial strain French Mautner (Mf).All hybrids possess adequate enzymatic activity in anaerobic metabolism of saccharose and maltose.Selected prototrophic hybrids were sent out to two yeast factories in the country for experimental propagation.

    Notes: Strains of the bacteria Zymomonas sp. were studied for their ability to form higher alcohols. In a complex growth medium, six strains were shown to produce significant amounts of 1-propanol, 1-butanol, 2-methyl-1-butanol, 3-methyl-1-butanol, 2-methyl-2-butanol, pentanols, secondary hexyl-alcohols, and trace amounts of n-hexanol. When resting cells of these organisms were placed into a fermentation medium containing glucose and Tris-buffer, Z. mobilis 8938 produced increased levels of 1-butanol, and secondary hexyl-alcohols at concentrations of 13.5 mg/liter and 5.8 mg/liter, respectively. Another strain, Z. mobilis subsp. mobilis B 806, stimulated the formation of 1-propanol and 1-butanol at concentrations of 14.9 mg/liter and 23.52 mg/liter, respectively. Amino acids or amino acid precursors were then added to the fermentation medium. The presence of threonine and α-ketobutyric acid stimulated Z. mobilis 8938 to produce 82.6 mg/liter secondary hexyl-alcohols and 8.0 mg/liter n-hexanol, respectively. Isoleucine and valine increased the production of 2-methyl-1-butanol (394.0 mg/liter) and 3-methyl-1-butanol (113.4 mg/liter), respectively, by Z. mobilis subsp. mobilis B 806. Glutamine enhanced the formation of 2-methyl-2-butanol production to concentrations 38.8 mg/liter in Zymomonas strain B 806. Additional experiments suggested that higher alcohol production could also be accomplished in the absence of glucose when cells were allowed to metabolize the precursors only. The effect of aromatic amino acids on phenol production was determined using resting cells of Zymomonas sp. The maximum yield of phenol (111.6 mg/liter) was found by Zymomonas strain 8938 in the presence of tyrosine. The addition of phenylalanine also stimulated this strain to form 71.4 mg/liter of phenol.

    Notes: In commercial batch processes the productivity of product formation is low. But a significant increase of productivity can be achieved in continuous fermentations. By using high flow rate fermenter systems characterized by a relatively long retention time of biomass in comparison with the retention time of the liquid we can realize a high-performance fermentation. The problem of holding back the biomass within the reactor could be solved by means of membranes being impenetrable to the cells, but permeable to the hydraulic phase. Such a process technology was successfully tested for its applicability in alcoholic and lactic acid fermentations. The maximum productivities obtained on this way were ṗ = 120 g/l. · h for ethanol production and ṗ = 51 g/l. h for lactic acid fermentation, respectively.

    Notes: The digestion of several proteins, casein, α-lactalbumin, human serum albumin and a mixture of whey proteins by immobilized pronase, thermitase and leucine aminopeptidase was studied on various conditions in five types of enzyme reactors. Reactors and operating conditions were designed to maximize the extent of hydrolysis and to minimize the adverse effects of the macromolecular nature of the substrates. A simple analytical method was developed to follow routinely the extent of hydrolysis. Substrate proteins were subjected to various pretreatments intended to disturb their native structure. The maximum feasible extent of hydrolysis in the reactor effluent, which is an average quantity, clustered around the magic figure of 33% in all systems studied. Protein digestion in bubbled column reactors charged with the polyaminomethylstyrene-fixed thermostable proteinase “thermitase” and operated at 50 to 60°C turned out to be the most efficient setup to produce continuously amino acid/peptide mixtures.

    Notes: Several fractions of ether extracts of beet molasses separated by chemical and chromatographic methods were found to be toxic for Aspergillus niger. Addition of these fractions to growth medium caused sinking of the mycelium in the culture broth and irregular growing of the test strains. Fermentation tests carried out on molasses media in the presence of the toxic fractions showed a different susceptibility depending on the used strain. From one fraction n-alkanes with 16 to 36 carbon atoms were isolated by thin-layer chromatography and identified using IR and GC methods. These compounds originated in molasses probably from chemical additives used in the sugar manufacture plant.

    Notes: The investigation of unfitness of beet molasses for citric acid production shows the presence of hydroacarbons in a toxic fraction of lipid extracts derived from antifoaming agents used in the suger industry. The model experiments demonstrate that these compounds dispersed in water solutions of the medium create on the surface of growing spores a layer which isolates them from the surrounding and prevents their normal growth. The inhibition effect of hydrocarbons on Aspergillus niger increases with degree of their dispersion in the water phase and is promoted by surface active substances e.g. emulgators present in antifoaming additives.

    Notes: The ability of ten baker's yeast strains to synthesize sterols was checked. Ergosterol/24(28)-dehydroergosterol (E/D) ratio had the value of 0.8 to 1 in most strains grown in a medium containing molasses as the carbon source. The ratio values were significantly increased in the cultures grown in a glucose medium. Both a decrease in the content of 24(28)-dehydroergosterol and a slight increase of the ergosterol content were found to be responsible for the high values of E/D in the glucose-grown cells. The strains examined could be divided into three groups on the basis of their behaviour towards glucose. The effect of the type of cultivation on sterol accumulation is demonstrated by comparing the sterol content of the representatives of the three groups of baker's yeasts grown in a fermenter or in shaken flasks.

    Notes: The accessibility of different carbon compounds to Azotobacter vinelandii and the productivity of nitrogen fixation were studied under static and shaking culture conditions. The nature of the carbon source applied was found to affect the yield of bacterial mass and nitrogen metabolism of the tested organism. On the basis of the efficiency of dinitrogen fixation and the yield efficiency ratio it was obvious that (sucrose + mannitol) as a source of carbon is optimum for both growth and dinitrogen fixation by A. vinelandii grown under static and shaking culture conditions. Furthermore, it was found that the highest crude protein efficiency ratio (14.6) and total carbohydrates efficiency ratio (4.3) were obtained with (sucrose + mannitol) as energy source for this organism under shaking culture condition. The experimental organism is able to convert the soluble nitrogenus substances present in molasses into more complex protein as well as to utilize the molasses as a source of energy for the fixtion of atmospheric nitrogen. The tested organism was unable to utilize sodium salicylate as the sole source of carbon.

    Notes: Organic acids that are excreted by microorganisms dissolve nickel from lateritic ores. In chemical leaching experiments, fifteen organic acids were tested in the concentration range of 0.05-0.5 M. The most effective were hydroxycarboxylic acids. The leaching of nickel is dependent on the type of mineralization. With completely limonitized ore, no mobilization occurred, while up to 90% of the nickel was extracted from silicate-bearing laterites by 0.5 M citric acid.In biological leaching tests, Penicillium was found to be the most effective microorganism. After improvement of the leaching conditions, up to 70% of the nickel was extracted at considerably lower citric acid concentrations than with the chemical leaching process. Generally, leaching of nickel from lateritic ores with heterotrophic microorganisms is possible and seems to be promising. Possibilities for future investigations are discussed.

    Notes: In recent years there have been a lot of works on the accumulation and removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions and industrial waste waters by different kinds of microorganisms. A variety of microorganisms are known to be tolerant to mercury, copper, chromium, silver, cadmium etc., or to have a high accumulation capacity for these elements.But nothing is known about the interactions between microorganisms and REE*-ions in aqueous solutions.The objectives of our experiments were to determine the ability of various microorganisms to accumulate REE and to determine what possible effects, in terms of growth, different REE-ion concentrations may have on the bacteria cultures.Experiments on the accumulation of La and Pr by a freeze dried bacteria mixed culture, carried out with model solutions, showed that the accumulation process is completed few minutes after contact. The uptake is independent on pH-value and temperature and amounts up to 63 mg REE/g biomass in both cases.A gram+ bacterium spec., isolated from an industrial waste water, accumulates large quantities of REE in dependence on the pre-treatment of the cells, e.g. in the case of resting or freeze dried cells up to 100 mg/g biomass and in the case of heat treated cells up to 40 mg/l.

    Notes: Intracellular concentrations of ATP, cyclic AMP and glucose-6-phosphate were monitored during growth of partially catabolically derepressed strain of Trichoderma reesei CC II in medium containing lactose as the sole carbon source. The induction of cellulase synthesis occured when the concentration of lactose in the medium decreased below 7 mg/ml. The onset of cellulase synthesis was preceded by a transient peak of intracellular concentration of ATP and by the increase of the cyclic AMP contents in the mycelium whereby the intracellular level of glucose-6-phosphate was at its minimum. By keeping the lactose concentration in the medium at 2 mg/ml, it was possible to support the continuation of cellulase synthesis over the prolonged periods without appreciable growth of biomass.

    Notes: In most industrially developed countries an increasing degree of nitrification can be observed in potential water reservoirs. High nitrate content is unacceptable by public health standards. Since contamination seems to be unavoidable, the only realistic solution is purification prior to utilization. One of the potential variations is biological denitrification with a highly intensive facility, a fluidized- or expanded-bed bioreactor. Based on laboratory and pilot plant experiments, a detailed analysis is presented on the problems arising and solutions offered in the construction of a purification system meeting high quality requirements of drinking water purification. The crucial point is selection of the denitrifying microorganisms and organic matter required for denitrification, which simultaneously determines the attachment of bacteria to the support material (autoimmobilization), the intensity of nitrate removal and the character of post-purification.

    Notes: It was analysed the influence of different pretreatment methods of cellulosic materials to increase the productivity of the cellulase biosynthesis.The most effective pretreatment method for cotton cellulose is the thermomechanical destruction in a worm extruder (5-15 minutes) with hydrolysis catalysts.The enzymatic saccharification degree was increased about 4 fold. Utilizing a pretreated cellulose an increase of 70-120% in C1-activity was found besides their level was stabilized in higher values.It was demonstrated that enzymatic hydrolysis parameters would be applied as model for biochemical utilization of cellulosic materials in the biosynthesis of cellulases.

    Notes: The applicability of biotechnological methods to metal recovery from non-sulfide industrial waste products (slag, galvanic sludge, filter-press residue, filter dust, and fly ash) was investigated. From some products, copper, chromium, zinc or vanadium were completely extracted by sulfuric acid produced by Thiobacillus thiooxidans. The efficiency of bacterial metal solubilization varied depending on the type of waste material and on the pulp density. Stepwise increase of pulp density promoted bacterial growth and activity, resulting in metal concentrations of 6.6 g Cu/l, 6.3 g V/l, 24.4 g Zn/l or 21 g Cr/l in the leaching medium. In some cases bacterial leaching was as effective as chemical leaching with sulfuric acid. The efficiency of both processes is considered. In principal, bacterial metal recovery from industrial waste products seems to be feasible and may contribute to an increase in future supplies of raw materials, as well as to detoxification of industrial waste products resulting in reduced environmental pollution problems.

    Notes: The influence of different concentrations of magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and copper on the growth kinetics of the methanotrophic bacterium GB 25 was investigated. Diverse inhibition models were used for the mathematical description of the results. On the basis of these model equations the optimal concentrations of the investigated ions were derived. Copper causes the greatest inhibition, on the contrary, potassium practically does not inhibit the growth of bacterium GB 25.

    Notes: Some aspects on the action of vegetable and animal oils and fatty acids on growth and protease synthesis of T. vulgaris were studied to interpret the stimulating effect of these substance. It was found that oil does not influence the hydrolysis of the substrate casein by the protease. However, the effect on the gas exchange during fermentation has a substantial importance. Furthermore, the metabolization of lipids shows that they play a role as carbon source.

    Notes: The influence of different factors (binding time, pH, temperature, and enzyme/carrier ratio) on the efficiency of immobilization of enzyme preparation with milk clotting activity from Bacillus mesentericus M strain by use of different carriers and methods of binding was investigated. It has been established that the dependence of immobilization from pH is most pronounced and is mainly influenced by the nature of the carrier. The binding time is of essential importance only by immobilization through adsorption. The temperature has not any influence on the efficiency of immobilization of the indicate preparation. Saturation of many of the used carriers by the different methods for immobilization was achieved at enzyme/carrier ratio 1 : 10, with exception of the cases where glutaraldehyde was used as binding reagent. In this case then the ratio was 1 : 4.

    Notes: The mixing-time characteristic in the three-stage stirrer system is analyzed for the range of 6 · 104 ≦ Re ≦ 3.2 · 105 using the pH-method. Different from the one-stage systems, for the baffled reactor (BW = 0.8) it was estimated that the homogenized number increases with cH ∼ Rem (m = 0.77). Obviously, between two stirrers it exists a kernel sphere with a delay mass transfer in consequence of low axial current components.The measurements can be described with high significance by the model for dimensionsless “mixing-rate number” of KHANG and LEVENSPIEL.

    Notes: A continuous flow system with an enzyme electrode and with a new type of measuring instrument, the BIOXY-Meter, is described as an example for the determination of glucose. The BIOXY-Meter combined with various biosensors may be used in biotechnology and in other fields for the solution of a number of analytical problems. Measuring principle is the reduction of oxygen. The peak of first derivation of the current-time-curve is proportional to oxygen consumption and to decrease of substrate concentration. Enzyme fixation with common adhesive and a device for automated saturation of measuring samples with air in the sampler are also described. With the apparatus 60 samples per hour are analyzed for glucose. The linear measuring range is 0.1 mMol to 1.5 mMol with a coefficient of variation of Vk = 0.93 per cent. The described type of enzyme electrode is stable for 2 to 12 weeks or 1,000 to 5,000 measurements.

    Notes: In a methodical paper two analytical-chemical procedures are described which concern the control of L-lysine formation during fermentation processes. On one hand lysine is determined fluorimetrically with o-phthalaldehyde at defined pH, on the other spectrophotometrically with ninhydrine in acidic medium. The analytical conditions are discussed with respect to specifity, interferences, accuracy and reproducibility. A comparison of values with Autoanalyzer technique and two other methods for lysine determination offers the possibility to decide in what manner and with which aim of desired accuracy, economy and rapidity a given specimen has to be analyzed.

    Notes: The temperature-profile curve of ethanol production of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae Sc 5 is shown. Accordingly the biokinetic sphere of ethanol formation consists of 5 ranges. The maximum specific ethanol formation rate v0 is reached within the temperature limits of 32°C ≦ T ≦ 36°C, and the maximum temperature for ethanol formation amounts to T″max = 57°C. Within the first suboptimum temperature range ethanol formation is not retarded thermally. Using a modified ARRHENIUS equation the activation energy of ethanol formation was calculated to be ΔHÊtOH = (78.5 ± 2.2) kJ/mol.

    Notes: The conversion of lactose  -  the main constituent of whey  -  to methane and carbon dioxide was studied using different defined constructed cultures, imploying strains of Methanosarcina barkeri, Methanobacterium bryantii, Escherichia coli, Acetobacterium woodii, Lactobacillus casei, and Lactobacillus plantarum. The following combinations of strains (food chains) were studied with respect to efficiency and yield of lactose conversion (methane yield in parentheses): E. coli and M. barkeri (4.5-7.6%), E. coli and M. bryantii (13.3%),E. coli, M. barkeri and M. bryantii (54%), L. casei, A. woodii and M. barkeri (93.3%). These conversions were carried out in pH controlled batch fermentations. A very efficient coculture was a combination of L. plantarum with A. woodii and M. barkeri: in chemostat cultures lactose was converted to methane and carbon dioxide with a yield of about 90%, at dilution rates of 0.27 d-1to 0.37 d-1.

    Notes: Growth kinetics of Aspergillus niger strain A.n./61 on a solid medium containing beet pulp were examined.Solid state fermentation was carried out in laboratory microfermenter (aerated packed columns). During the experiments the CO2 evolution, protein biosynthesis, as well as cellulose and sucrose utilization were determined.It was found that CO2 evolution evidently increased in the logarithmic phase, together with the protein biosynthesis. Between 30-32 h of culture CO2 evolution and protein content in product were the greatest. Subsequently, CO2 evolution decreased.During 28 h of culture, cellulose was slightly utilized, the strain using mainly sucrose. Intense utilization of cellulose was paralleled by a drop in CO2 evolution.

    Notes: Leaching processes can be classified in chemolithotrophic and organoheterotrophic mechanisms. In the case of chemolithotrophic leaching sulphide minerals, elemental sulphur, ferrous iron and a number of different reduced metals will be oxidized in a solution containing sulphuric acid of bacterial and/or chemical origin.Organoheterotrophic leaching however is connected with the accumulation of microbial metabolites such as organic acids, proteins, peptides and polysaccharides, which are capable to disintegrate ores, minerals or industrial wastes through dissolution, formation of complexes or chelates.Whereas at the present time chemolithotrophic leaching processes are in operation in industrial scale for the winning of copper, uranium and some other special metals, organoheterotrophic processes, their problems and technical applications are still under study.Therefore problems of organoheterotrophic leaching of chemical high resistant materials such as phosphorus furnace slag and zircon from the Baltic shield have been investigated with regard to possible technical applications for the winning of rare earth elements (REE) and other precious metals.Using a strain of Acetobacter methanolicus which is able to accumulate large amounts of gluconic acid on the basis of glucose or glucose containing by-products, leaching effects up to 90% of REE could be realized in the case of phosphorus furnace slag and up to 45% in the case of zircon.

Room temperature rate constants for the OH reactions with several other aliphatic alcohols were also measured. These were (in the above units): 1-propanol, (53.4 ± 2.9); 1-butanol, (83.1 ± 6.3) and 1-pentanol, (108 ± 11). The results are discussed in terms of the mechanisms for these reactions and are compared to previous literature data.

    Notes: The pyrolyses of cyanomethyl t-butyl sulfide and its oxygen homologue have been studied in a stirred-flow system over the temperature range 490-540°C and pressures between 5 and 14 Torr. In both cases, isobutene is formed as product in over 97% yield. Hydrogen sulfide is obtained in about half the amount of isobutene in the pyrolysis of the sulfide. Hydrogen cyanide is formed in the pyrolysis of the ether.     Notes: Using a relative rate technique, rate constants have been determined for the gas-phase reactions of Cl atoms with the cholorethenes and ethane at 298 ± 2 K and 735 torr total pressure of air. Using a rate constant of 1.97 × 10-10 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 for the reaction of Cl atoms with n-butane, the following rate constants (in units of 10-11 cm3 molecule-1 s-1) were obtained: vinyl chloride, 12.7 ± 0.2; 1,1-dichloroethene, 14.0 ± 0.2; cis-1,2-dichloroethene, 9.65 ± 0.10; trans-1,2-dichloroethene, 9.58 ± 0.18; trichloroethene, 8.08 ± 0.10; tetrachloroethene, 4.13 ± 0.23; and ethane, 6.17 ± 0.08 (where the indicated error limits do not include the uncertainties in the rate constant for n-butane). A small amount of cis-trans isomerization was observed for the reactions involving the cis- and trans-1,2-dichloroethenes. These data are compared and discussed with the available literature data.

    Notes: The pyrolysis of acetylene-styrene mixtures has been studied from 450-550°C in a quartz reaction vessel in the absence and presence of O2 or NO. The rates of disappearance of reactants and formation of adducts are first-order in each reactant. The major product is polymer, with the adducts accounting for about 2.5% and 6.2% of the styrene removed at 450 and 550°C, respectively. The acetylene-to-styrene removal ratio is about 27 independent of temperature. The adducts formed are methyl indene and 1,2-dihydronaphthalene. These are about half-suppressed in the presence of O2 or NO.     Notes: An analysis of thermochemical and kinetic data on the bromination of the halomethanes CH4-nXn (X = F, Cl, Br; n = 1-3), the two chlorofluoromethanes, CH2FCl and CHFCl2, and CH4, shows that the recently reported heats of formation of the radicals CH2Cl, CHCl2, CHBr2, and CFCl2, and the C—H bond dissociation energies in the matching halomethanes are not compatible with the activation energies for the corresponding reverse reactions. From the observed trends in CH4 and the other halomethanes, the following revised ΔH°f,298 (R) values have been derived: ΔH°f(CH2Cl) = 29.1 ± 1.0, ΔH°f(CHCl2) = 23.5 ± 1.2, ΔHf(CH2Br) = 40.4 ± 1.0, ΔH°f(CHBr2) = 45.0 ± 2.2, and ΔH°f(CFCl2) = -21.3 ± 2.4 kcal mol-1. The previously unavailable radical heat of formation, ΔH°f(CHFCl) = -14.5 ± 2.4 kcal mol-1 has also been deduced. These values are used with the heats of formation of the parent compounds from the literature to evaluate C—H and C—X bond dissociation energies in CH3Cl, CH2Cl2, CH3Br, CH2Br2, CH2FCl, and CHFCl2.

    Notes: Kinetic studies on the oxidation of carbon monoxide have been carried out between 413 and 473 K at different partial pressures of carbon monoxide and oxygen by means of the static method using vacuum-activated, hydrogen-reduced, and NiO-doped In2O3 semiconductors as catalysts. A strong carbon dioxide inhibiting effect is observed. The experimental data satisfactorily fit an equation derived by assuming the controlling step to be the adsorption of gaseous oxygen on the surface of catalyst. CO and CO2 adsorb on the lattice oxygens (Oo2-), while O2 adsorbs on the oxygen vacancies (Vox) formed by vacuum-activation, H2-reduction, and NiO-doping of In2O3. When CO2 formed during the reaction is removed by means of liquid nitrogen trap, the oxidation is found to be first-order with respect to CO and to be half-order with respect to O2. The concentration of oxygen vacancy in the solid catalyst is shown to be the controlling factor for the oxidation of carbon monoxide. A possible reaction mechanism can be explained by the n-type character of In2O3 and proposed from the experimentally obtained kinetic data and conductivities.

    Notes: The reaction of OH and OD radicals with ethylene in the presence of 1 atm argon and 6 Torr water vapor was studied in the temperature range 343-1173 K. The results reveal three kinetically separate temperature regions: (1) 343-563 K, where the disappearance of OH radical is dominated by the addition of OH to the double bond of ethylene; (2) 563-748 K, where concurrent reactions of addition, the reverse reaction of addition and H-atom abstraction is dominant; and (3) 748-1173 K, where H-atom abstraction is likely the main reaction. The rate for hydrogen abstraction is 2.4 × 10-11 exp[(-2104 ± 125)/T] cm3/molec-s (for OD 2.1 × 10-11 exp[(-2130 ± 172)/T] cm3/molec-s). There was no obvious pyrolysis of ethylene below 1073 K. The study of OD radical with ethylene shows a small isotope effect.

    Notes: A recently published kinetic model of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction was studied by the feature sensitivity analysis of the slow bromide consumption and slow bromide production periods of the relaxing-type oscillatory system. The computed sensitivities allowed us to reveal the kinetic importance of the 17 individual reactions during the two, “kinetically homogeneous” states of the oscillation. Similarities and differences in the relative kinetic importances of the reaction steps were carefully studied when changing the magnitude of the rate constants (high set and low set). Of the 17 reactions examined, the attack of Ce4+ on malonic acid proved to be an essential step of the mechanism. Using the low set, there emerge more reactions which significantly affect the length of the two kinetic states.

    Notes: Following earlier room-temperature studies, gaseous mixtures of methyl cyclobutyl ketone (MCK) diluted in argon have been photolyzed at temperatures up to 205°C. Experiments have been carried out at a variety of pressures (up to ca. 2 atm) at wavelengths of 313 nm (steady state conditions) and 308 nm (pulsed photolysis). The results are consistent with a mechanism dominated by radical-radical reactions involving acetyl, methyl, and cyclobutyl radicals. Acetyl radical processes predominate at lower temperatures while methyl radical reactions are more important at high temperatures.The results are interpreted via kinetic modelling of a mechanism in which a key role is played by the acetyl radical decomposition reaction \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ ({\rm M} +)\,{\rm CH}_{\rm 3} {\rm CO}\mathop {\longrightarrow}\limits^{\rm 3} {\rm CH}_{\rm 3} + {\rm CO\, (+ M)} $$\end{document} Values for k3 have been obtained and its temperature and pressure dependence are fitted by RRKM theory and a weak-collisional activation model to yield \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm log(}k_3 ^\infty /{\rm s}^{ - 1}) = 13.3 - 17.5{\rm\, kcal\, mol}^{{\rm - 1}} /RT\ln 10 $$\end{document} This high-pressure limiting Arrhenius equation is consistent with other studies in the same temperature range, but is difficult to reconcile with higher temperature investigations.

    Notes: The mechanism of ligand substitution in 17- and 19-electron organometallic radicals is discussed. These species substitute ligands by an associative process some 106 to 1010 faster than analogous 18-electron complexes. When 17-electron species can be generated by bond homolysis or electron transfer reactions of 18-electron complexes, they can act as intermediates in radical chain reactions of 18-electron complexes. A 17-19 electron rule is proposed to explain transformations of organometallic radicals just as the 16-18 electron rule finds use for closed shell organometallic complexes. The origin of this rule is the favorable two-center three-electron bond that can form when an odd electron in a sterically accessible metal d-orbital interacts with an electron pair on an entering nucleophile. Besides simple substitution, these radicals can disproportionate, dimerize, and undergo insertion or atom abstraction reactions.

    Notes: The rate constants of the gas phase reaction of OH radicals with dimethyl sulfide (CH3SCH3) over the temperature range 260-393 K have been studied using the discharge flow-resonance fluorescence technique. The rate constants were fitted by the Arrhenius equation k = (11.8 ± 2.2) × 10-12 exp[-(236 ± 150)/T] cm3 molecule-1 s-1 with k = (5.5 ± 1.0) × 10-12 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 at 298 K. Our results are in good agreement with the lower range of values reported previously. The observation of a small positive activation energy agrees well with that reported by Hynes et al. The rate constant was not affected by the total pressure variation (0.8-3.0 torr) or by the addition of oxygen (up to 1 torr) in the flow tube.

    Notes: Br atoms produced in a microwave discharge react abnormally rapidly with isobutane to produce HBr + t-Butyl. A VLPR study of the system at high Br atom concentration (Br ˜ 1013/cc) between 298 and 363 K permits one to separate the effects of excited atoms, Br* (2P1/2) from ground state atoms, Br (2P3/2). Rate constants for the latter agree well with bromination measurements and permit fixing ΔHƒ2980(tBu) at 9.5 ± 0.5kcal/mol in agreement with earlier work.
