Notes: Summary The study deals with expansion waves in fluids, with particular reference to hydrodynamic earthquake effects. The current assumption of steady harmonic motion is compared with the assumption that the motion is discontinuous in the sense that it starts from the initial condition of rest. A numerical example shows that the impulsive start may have a considerable influence on the dynamic water pressure.

Notes: Summary The present paper deals with certain problems of non-artesian aquifers, with special reference to non-steady flow due to replenishment from the ground surface. Solutions are obtained by direct integration ofBoussinesq's differential equation (transformed), taking also the inclination of the groundwater surface and the slope of the bottom of the aquifer into account. — The study has some bearing on hydrological investigations. For example, it may be desired to find the location of a moving groundwater divide between two water courses, or to determine the quantity of groundwater passing between them. Problems of this nature are also often met with in water supply (artificial infiltration, etc.) and other fields of engineering practice.

Notes: Summary The present paper is a continuation of a previous study by the author(1), dealing with expansion waves in fluids. Relating to hydro-dynamic effects due to harmonic vibrations, with special reference to earthquakes, it contains solutions for some rigid-walled vessels of geometrically determined shape. A salient feature of the problem is that the motion is assumed discontinuous in the sense that it starts from the initial condition of rest.

Notes: Summary 23 patients with proven pseudolupus-syndrome were observed over a period of five years; titers of specific antimitochondrial antibodies (AMA) were tested in a follow-up study after the last intake of Venopyronum-Dragees (VPD), a drug combination of plant glycosides, horse-chestnut extracts and phenopyrazone. Cellular immune reactions against the eliciting drug, depended on the date of the acute phase and were examined in two patients after reexposure. High titers in the acute phase decreased rapidly in most of the cases within the first six months. After reexposure with VPD, AMA rose within three days up to the five fold compared with the initial titer. Only the analgetic component of VPD, phenopyrazone, was able to induce a significant increase of AMA-titer after reexposure. A specific cellular sensitivity to this substance could be demonstrated by lymphocyte stimulation in the presence of a phenopyrazone containing drug preparation. There was no chronic course of the disease; clinical exazerbation could be observed only after new intake of the drug. The analysis of drug history shows, that other pyrazolone containing drugs may also be able to induce a pseudolupus-syndrome.

Notes: Summary Serum factors may be responsible for reduced host-anti-tumor defence. Although there is still confusion about their origin, attempts have been made to immobilize serum components by Protein A columns as a therapeutic modality. In our study the in vitro adsorption of 90% of the IgG from cancer sera on “immobilized protein A” did not influence the inhibitory serum activity as measured in a mixed lymphocyte culture. Therefore, IgG or immune complexes do not seem to be the suppressive serum factor in patients with advanced colorectal carcinoma. There is evidence for leakage of small amounts of protein A from the columns which have immunostimulatory activity. Perhaps this may explain necrosis after a therapeutic immunoadsorption.

Notes: Summary Serum α-tocopherol and retinol concentrations were followed in four heterozygous adults and one homozygous child with familial hypercholesterolemia being treated by regular low-density lipoprotein (LDL) apheresis. Approximately 50% of plasma α-tocopherol was eliminated during a single apheresis procedure in the heterozygous adults, while a complete elimination of this vitamin along with LDLs was observed in the homozygous child. Absolute losses of α-tocopherol amounted to 13.4–22.5 mg/apheresis and are equivalent to the recommended dietary intake for 1.5 to 2 days. Despite these losses, no changes were observed either in serum α-tocopherol levels or in the ratio of α-tocopherol/total serum lipids after 12 months regular apheresis treatment. Serum retinol concentrations only showed a small decrease on apheresis, there being apparently no specific elimination of this vitamin. The absolute losses ranged from 42–422 µg/apheresis and were, therefore, much lower than the recommended dietary intake of the equivalent of 1500 µg retinol/day. It is concluded that no extra supplementation of these vitamins is required during LDL-apheresis therapy, although it may be advisable to monitor vitamin E status in patients on long-term, intensive therapy.

Notes: Abstract Experimental equipment has been developed to make possible continuous recordings of intensity distribution curves as a function of angle of incidence of light in single ommatidia of arthropod compound eyes. — As preliminary experiment, the visual fields of ommatidia in Limulus, Apis and Cataglyphis have been ascertained without a light measuring instrument. A point source was moved through the visual field and the angular position of the light source on both sides of the visual field at which the rhabdome in the cut-off eye viewed from proximal turned dark was determined. In the dorsal part of the Limulus eye, the cranio-caudal width of the visual field is 42.6±0.3°. The width of the visual field of central ommatidia in Apis is 6.68±0.14° in the dorsoventral plane and 7.42±0.24° in the cranio-caudal direction, in Cataglyphis 15.5±0.5° and 12.5±0.4° respectively.— Similar Gaussian curves for light and dark adapted ommatidia resulted from the continuous recordings of intensity distribution curves in Apis. The rotatory symmetric curve of the worker bee has a half-width of Δρ=2.57°. The standardized curve of amplitude one may be approximated by the function y=exp (-0.41 [degree−2]ϕ 2). In Cataglyphis, the half-width of the intensity distribution curve is Δρ=8.8° in the dorso-ventral plane and Δρ=6.8° in the cranio-caudal plane. Near the axis, the functions y=exp(-0.04 [degree−2]ϕ2) and y=exp(-0.06 [degree−2]ϕ 2) approximate the standardized curves. — Knowledge of intensity distributions in connection with interommatidial angles Δρ allows estimation of contrast transfer and resolving power of the array of the dioptric systems. Correlations with behavioural findings are attempted.
