    Notes: Abstract The isolation of Sporothrix schenckii from a female European cat it is described. The cat showed lengthened alopecic areas, with prominent nodules in the external surface of the thighs and abdomen. A mycological and histopathological studies of the lesions were carried out. The lesions resolved under treatment with 20% potassium iodide in doses of 0'1 ml/kg oral route in a 8 weeks period.

    Notes: Summary The cerebellar nuclear projection from the lateral reticular nucleus (NRL) was studied in 29 cats by means of retrograde axonal transport after implantation of the crystalline wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) complex in the cerebellar nuclei. It was confirmed that all the cerebellar nuclei receive afferent fibres from the NRL with the strongest termination in the ipsilateral interposed nuclei. In addition, these experiments give evidence of a previously unrecognized topical pattern in the projection to the interposed nuclei, arranged according to the same principle as in the projection to the immediately overlying cerebellar cortex. Thus, the anterior interposed nucleus receives fibres from all parts of the main NRL, its rostral part especially from laterally situated neurons, while subsequent more caudal parts from more medially situated neurons, while the posterior interposed nucleus receives fibres mainly from the dorsomedial part of the main NRL. The cerebellar nuclear projection to the NRL was investigated in 15 cats using retrograde transport after ventral microiontophoretical ejections of the WGA-HRP complex in the main NRL. The contralateral rostral fastigial nucleus was confirmed as the main origin of this projection, but projecting neurons were, in addition, discovered rostrally in the anterior interposed and dentate nuclei on the same side. No topical differences could be observed following ejections in different parts of the NRL; the majority of the projecting neurons were always concentrated along the ventral and lateral borders of the fastigial nucleus and in the adjacent medial part of the anterior interposed nucleus.

    Notes: Summary This report presents the clinical, morphological and biochemical findings on an 11-month-old female Siamese cat with neurovisceral sphingomyelinosis. Gross pathological features and histochemical findings are compared with the human disease counterpart and the previously described animal models. Hepatomegaly was observed while splenomegaly was not. Although sphingomyelin in liver and spleen was biochemically elevated, histochemical results in this case were slightly different from those previously recorded in human and feline Niemann-Pick disease. These results suggest that this feline case might be a different type of animal Niemann-Pick disease to that reported previously.

    Notes: Summary Blood and bone marrow cells of ten clinically healthy cats were stained for alkaline phosphatase (ALP), peroxidase (PO), chloroacetate esterase (CAE), alpha-naphthyl butyrate esterase (NBE), sudanophilia, and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) reaction. Mature neutrophils in blood and bone marrow were devoid of ALP and NBE, but exhibited modest to strong PO, CAE, sudanophilia, and PAS reaction. In bone marrow, sudanophilia, PO, and CAE were prominent at the promyelocyte stage and diminished with cellular differentiation and maturation, while PAS reactivity increased with cell maturation usually from the myelocyte stage onwards. Myeloblasts were negative for all cytochemical reactions, but some large unidentifiable cells reacted strongly for ALP. Eosinophils were slightly reactive for ALP, CAE, and PAS, but not for PO, sudanophilia, and NBE. Basophil granules stained strongly for CAE, revealed PAS positivity, and stained negatively for PO, NBE, ALP, and sudanophilia. Slight ALP activity was detected in the intergranular cytoplasm of basophils. Lymphocytes and monocytes, with few exceptions, stained negatively. An occasional lymphocyte revealed slight globular NBE activity (NaF-resistant) and diffuse PAS reaction, while an occasional monocyte contained a few PO-positive and sudanophilic granules. Monocytes reacted modestly, whereas bone marrow macrophages reacted strongly for NBE (NaF-sensitive). Cells of the erythroid series stained negatively for all cytochemical reactions, megakaryocytes were PAS-positive, and platelets gave positive reactions for PAS and CAE.

    Notes: Summary Eye and head movements are strongly interconnected, because they both play an important role in accurately determining the direction of the visual field. The rostral brainstem includes two areas which contain neurons that participate in the control of both movement and position of the head and eyes. These regions are the caudal third of Field H of Forel, including the rostral interstitial nucleus of the medial longitudinal fasciculus (riMLF) and the interstitial nucleus of Cajal with adjacent reticular formation (INC-RF). Lesions in the caudal Field H of Forel in monkey and man result in vertical gaze paralysis. Head tilt to the opposite side and inability to maintain vertical eye position follow lesions in the INC-RF in cat and monkey. Projections from these areas to extraocular motoneurons has previously been observed. We reported a study of the location of neurons in Field H of Forel and INC-RF that project to spinal cord in cat. The distribution of these fiber projections to the spinal cord are described. The results indicate that: 1. Unlike the neurons projecting to the extra-ocular muscle motoneurons, the major portion of the spinally projecting neurons are not located in the riMLF or INC proper but in adjacent areas, i.e. the ventral and lateral parts of the caudal third of the Field H of Forel and in the INCRF. A few neurons were also found in the nucleus of the posterior commissure and ventrally adjoining reticular formation. 2. Neurons in caudal Field H of Forel project, via the ventral part of the ventral funiculus, to the lateral part of the upper cervical ventral horn. This area includes the laterally located motoneuronal cell groups, innervating cleidomastoid, clavotrapezius and splenius motoneurons. At lower cervical levels labeled fibers are distributed to the medial part of the ventral horn. Projections from the caudal Field H of Forel to thoracic or more caudal spinal levels are sparse. 3. Neurons in the INC-RF, together with a few neurons in the area of the nucleus of the posterior commissure, project bilaterally to the medial part of the upper cervical ventral horn, via the dorsal part of the ventral funiculus. This area includes motoneurons innervating prevertebral flexor muscles and some of the motoneurons of the biventer cervicis and complexus muscles. Further caudally, labeled fibers are distributed to the medial part of the ventral horn (laminae VIII and adjoining VII) similar to the projections of Field H of Forel. A few INC-RF projections were observed to low thoracic and lumbosacral levels. It is argued that the neurons in the caudal Field H of Forel, which project to the spinal cord are especially involved in the control of those fast vertical head movements which occur in conjunction with saccadic eye movements. In contrast the INC-RF projections to the spinal cord are responsible for slower, smaller movements controlling the position of the head in the vertical plane.

    Notes: Summary Evidence is presented that in the cat, the spinothalamic system contributes to short latency somaesthetic responses in motor cortex efferent cells. Intracellular recordings performed on identified pyramidal tract cells and corticospinal cells show that these cells are still activated and/or inhibited from the periphery after a set of central nervous lesions leaving intact only the ventral half of the spinal cord. The responses were attributed to the spinothalamic system. The ascending system is activated through collaterals of afferent fibres running in the dorsal columns of the spinal cord. This peripheral link to the motor cortex might participate in updating the motor command on the basis of information feedback from the periphery.

    Notes: Summary For cat retinal ganglion cells whose receptive field centres were distributed in specified sections of the left visual field, the deviations of the major axis from the radial, horizontal, and circumferential directions were determined. The percentage of cells with deviations within ± 20° from the radial, horizontal, and circumferential directions were, respectively, 33%, 68%, 16%. In addition, comparison between values of deviation from the horizontal direction for cells located at eccentricities of 10° and 20° from the area centralis showed a statistically significant trend: the bias for the horizontal increased with eccentricity.

    Notes: Summary A total of 260 neurons were recorded in the rostral pontine tegmentum of freely moving cats during the sleep-waking cycle. Of these, 207 neurons (80%) were located in the dorsal pontine tegmentum containing monoaminergic and choline acetyltransferase (ChAT)-immunoreactive, or cholinergic neurons. In addition to presumably monoaminergic PS-off cells (n = 51) showing a cessation of discharge during paradoxical sleep (PS) and presumably cholinergic PGO-on cells (n = 40) exhibiting a burst of discharge just prior to and during ponto-geniculo-occipital (PGO) waves, we observed tonic (n = 108) and phasic (n = 61) neurons exhibiting, respectively, tonic and phasic patterns of discharge during wakefulness and/or paradoxical sleep. Of 87 tonic cells histologically localized in the dorsal pontine tegmentum rich in cholinergic neurons, 46 cells (53%) were identified as giving rise to ascending projections either to the intralaminar thalamic complex (n = 26) or to the ventrolateral posterior hypothalamus (n = 13) or to both (n = 9). Two types of tonic neurons were distinguished: 1) tonic type I neurons (n = 28), showing a tonic pattern and high rates of discharge during both waking and paradoxical sleep as compaired with slow wave sleep; and 2) tonic type II neurons (n = 20), exhibiting a tonic pattern of discharge highly specific to the periods of paradoxical sleep. Tonic type I neurons were further divided into two subclasses on the basis of discharge rates during waking: a) rapid (Type I-R; n = 17); and b) slow (Type I-S; n = 11) units with a discharge frequency of more than 12 spikes/s or less than 5 spikes/s, respectively. Like monoaminergic PS-off and cholinergic PGO-on cells, both tonic type II and type I-S cells were characterized by a long spike duration (median: 3.3 and 3.5 ms), as well as by a slow conduction velocity (median: 1.8 and 1.7 m/s). In the light of these data, we discuss the possible cholinergic nature and functional significance of these ascending tonic neurons in the generation of neocortical electroencephalographic desynchronization occurring during waking and paradoxical sleep.

    Notes: Summary The activity of 98 Red Nucleus neurons was recorded in 3 cats operantly conditioned to perform a ballistic forelimb flexion movement triggered after a brief sound in a simple Reaction Time condition, or Delayed after the same sound in the presence of a tone cue. Fifty-eight task related neurons presented changes of activity in either one or both conditions. Forty-four of them were studied quantitatively and classified in 3 categories: 1) only 16% of the units presented similar changes of firing preceding the triggered or delayed movement; 2) most units (55%) presented different changes of activity in the two conditions: in the Delayed condition, the activation occurred earlier before the movement, and/or the change in magnitude was reduced or the pattern of activity was modified; 3) moreover, for 29% of the units, the change of activity observed before movement in the Reaction Time condition was severely reduced or even absent in the Delayed condition. For some of these neurons a building-up of activity was observed very early in the Reaction Time condition, during the preparatory period, well before the occurrence of the conditioned stimulus. These results show that the Red Nucleus activity preceding a movement is clearly dependent on its initiation conditions. The distinct patterns of unit firing observed in the Reaction Time condition and in the Delayed condition are tentatively related to the different preparation and initiation constraints determined by the behavioral conditions.

    Notes: Summary The motoneurons to the Soleus muscle in the decerebrate cat were activated by the crossed extensor reflex, elicited by stimulation of the contralateral common peroneal (CP) nerve. Monosynaptic reflexes were obtained from the Soleus motoneuron pool by stimulation of the cut L7-S1 dorsal roots. The amplitude of the reflex increased approximately linearly with the recruitment level of the motoneuron pool. Tonic postsynaptic inhibition was induced in the Soleus moto-neuron pool by repetitive antidromic stimulation of the Lateral Gastrocnemius (LG) and Medial Gastrocnemius (MG) nerves at a rate of 17–47 stimuli/s. This reduced the size of the monosynaptic reflex at rest by at least 40%. However, when the motoneurons were active, the amplitude of the monosynaptic reflex obtained during repetitive stimulation of the LG-MG nerve increased with the recruitment level along the same curve as the control reflexes. Thus, tonic postsynaptic inhibition of the motoneurons per se cannot control the amplitude of the monosynaptic reflex independently of the recruitment level of the motoneuron pool. These experimental results verify predictions from computer simulations and suggest by exclusion that presynaptic inhibition is needed to control the amplitude of the monosynaptic reflex independently of the recruitment level of the motor pool.

    Notes: Summary The tonotopic organization observed in the present study for the pars lateralis (LV) of the medial geniculate body (MGB) in nitrous oxide anesthetized cats is generally consistent with that previously reported under barbiturate anesthesia. The present data, however, provide evidence for local deviations in characteristic frequency (CF) using appropriate sampling procedures of single units. Although the majority of pairs of units recorded simultaneously with the same microelectrode showed comparable CFs, a few pairs of such neighbouring units displayed CF disparities of up to 1.5 octaves. In addition, some units characterized by an elevated threshold had a CF deviating significantly from the general CF progression observed for the majority of units having low thresholds. This study points out the influence of the sampling procedure on the quality of the tonotopic organization observed in the MGB in addition to a possible effect of the level of anesthesia.

    Notes: Summary The responses of 82 simple cells and 41 complex cells in area 17 of anesthetized and paralysed cats were examined with light bars of different length. For 84% of the simple cells and 66% of the complex cells the preferred axis of orientation of a stationary flashing long bar (orientational selectivity) and the preferred axis of movement of a small spot were parallel. As a consequence, the axis of maximal response to a moving light spot was mostly orthogonal to the optimal axis of a moving bar. Thus, a single cell responds to two perpendicular axes of preferred movement one for a long bar and one for a light spot, respectively. For both axes independent direction preferences could be distinguished. Additional preferred axes of movement between the two orthogonal extremes could be found with moving bars of intermediate lengths. This can be explained by the fact that cells with a pronounced response to a moving spot showed a strong tendency for intermediate bar length to elicit responses consisting of a superposition of both components. Therefore, decreasing bar length resulted in a gradual rotation of the preferred direction of movement from orthogonal to parallel with respect to the orientational axis, rather than to a mere widening of the tuning curve. Accordingly, the change in orientation selectivity with decreasing bar length is a regular transition from the orientation dependent response to a response type that depends only on the movement axis of the spot. Thus, in a simple model, the resulting response characteristic can be interpreted as an average of both components weighted according to the length of the stimulus.

    Notes: Summary This study maps the eye movements evoked by microstimulations in the medulla of 9 alert cats. Trains of square waves (20 μA amplitude, 0.2 msec duration, 200 Hz) were delivered through glass-covered tungsten microelectrodes (0.5–1 MΩ). Movements of both eyes were recorded by the magnetic field/eye coil technique. Stimulation of the prepositus hypoglossi nucleus (PH) evoked nystagmus with ipsilaterally-directed slow phases followed by after-nystagmus with contralaterally-directed slow phases. Stimulation of the medial vestibular nucleus (MVN) induced nystagmus whose slow phases were more often ipsilaterally-directed but at time contralaterally-directed. At nearly all sites where we stimulated the reticular formation underlying prepositus and vestibular nuclei (from P4.5 to P12), we recorded versional conjugate movements. They were most often ipsilaterally-directed. Some microstimulations in the region of the medial longitudinal fasciculus evoked recentering eye movements: regardless of the initial position of the gaze (to the left as well as to the right), microstimulations given at the same place induced a movement of both eyes toward their neutral position. The amplitude of this movement was proportional to the eccentricity of the pre-stimulation position of the gaze.

    Notes: Summary The central distributions of efferent and afferent components of the pharyngeal branches of the vagus (PH-X) and glossopharyngeal (PH-IX) nerves in the cat were studied by soaking their central cut ends in a horseradish peroxidase (HRP) solution. HRP-labelled PH-X neurones were distributed ipsilaterally in the rostral part of the nucleus ambiguus (NA) and the retrofacial nucleus (RFN); HRP-labelled PH-IX neurones were found in the ipsilateral RFN and the bulbopontine lateral reticular formation (RF). Vagal pharyngeal neurones constituted a large population of brainstem motoneurones. The population of HRP-labelled glossopharyngeal neurones was divided into two components. Indeed, on the basis of their location and somal morphology, the most ventral cells were identified as cranial motoneurones and those scattered in the lateral RF as parasympathetic preganglionic neurones. Application of HRP to the PH-IX nerve resulted also in the labelling of fibres and terminals in the alaminar spinal trigeminal nucleus and the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS). The afferent fibres entered the lateral medulla with the glossopharyngeal roots, ran dorsomedially, then turned caudally toward the NTS and the caudal part of the alaminar spinal trigeminal motor (V) nucleus. In the NTS, labelled fibres ran mainly along the solitary tract, projecting to terminals in the dorsal and dorsolateral nuclei of the NTS.

    Notes: Summary We recorded the response of sustained (X) and transient (Y) cells in the cat lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) and optic tract to a stationary spot while the spot luminance was increased and decreased with a constant rate (linear luminance functions), or modulated sinusoidally. The spot filled the receptive field center, and was surrounded by an annulus of fixed luminance. The LGN X cells seemed to perform a differentiation-like operation in the time domain at slow temporal modulations, giving information about rate of luminance change. To the linear luminance functions the cells responded with a constant firing rate. The on-center cells were activated during increasing luminance, the off-center cells during decreasing luminance. This firing rate increased monotonically with rate of luminance change. To low-frequency sinusoidal modulations the cells had a marked negative phase shift. The response of the LGN Y cells had a transient component shortly after the luminance started to increase (on-center cells) or decrease (off-center cells), followed by a secondary, gradually changing component. The peak of the transient component occurred on average when the response of the X cells increased most rapidly. To low-frequency sinusoidal modulation the average negative phase shift of this peak was twice the average of the X cells. The Y system could accordingly provide information about rate of change in the response of the X system. In the optic tract the X fiber response resembled the LGN X cell response in most respects. The Y fibers had only a weak transient response component, so this component was accentuated in the thalamic relay. Also the sensitivity for rate of luminance change was increased in LGN.

    Notes: Summary 1. Intracellular recordings were made from 220 Phrenic Motoneurons (PM) in anaesthetized, spontaneously breathing cats, deafferented from C3 to C7, in order to look for somatic events related to the Recurrent Responses (RR) evoked in PM axons by repetitive stimulation of the phrenic nerve. RR appear sporadically at a constant latency, originate from a spinal nicotinic mechanism and can be evoked in a PM without the presence of an antidromic volley in its axon (Khatib et al. 1986). 2. Using stimuli effective for eliciting RR in axons, we failed to observe intracellularly somatic events corresponding to RR after the occurence of an antidromic action potential. RR were observed extracellularly in two cases, but in both cases the recording originated from axons. 3. We attempted to elicit somatic RR without a preceding antidromic action potential, using either parathreshold stimulation of the impaled PM, or suprathreshold stimulation of a phrenic strand which excluded the axon of the impaled PM. In both cases, RR-like events, with very stable latencies, appeared sporadically in 4/142 and 2/15 PMs respectively. 4. Parathreshold stimuli or stimulation of a strand were coupled with averaging of the synaptic noise in order to look for small events temporally related to the stimuli. Short latency small depolarizations, looking-like recurrent EPSPs, were revealed in 22/142 and 5/15 PMs respectively. 5. These results confirm the existence of interrelations between PMs, providing for re-excitation and coupling within the phrenic pool, in addition to centrally imposed synchronization.

    Notes: Summary We studied the role of the transcallosal pathway in stereopsis by measuring binocular and monocular depth perception in two cats that had undergone section of the optic chiasm at the age of 21 d. To ensure that the surgery did not impair vision to the extent that depth perception could not be evaluated, visual acuity and visual fields were also measured. In both of the chiasm-sectioned animals the visual fields were reduced and the visual acuity was substantially lower than in normal cats, with a maximum of about 2 cyc deg-1. Binocular depth thresholds of the chiasm-sectioned cats were worse than those of the normal cat but were better than their own monocular thresholds. These results suggest that the chiasm-sectioned animals were still able to use binocular cues to judge depth and indicate that the indirect pathway through the corpus callosum is sufficient to mediate binocular depth perception.

    Notes: Summary The projections from certain brain stem precerebellar nuclei to the cerebellar cortex and nuclei have been examined in the cat by using the retrograde fluorescent double-labelling technique. Crystalline Fluoro-Gold was implanted into the left cerebellar nuclei from the contralateral side and rhodamine-B-isothiocyanate was injected into the overlying cerebellar cortex. The inferior olive, the lateral reticular nucleus, and the reticular tegmental pontine nucleus all contained double- as well as single-labelled neurons, and it was concluded that these nuclei have a high number of neurons whose axons branch to both the cerebellar cortex and nuclei. The neurons in the paramedian reticular nucleus and the pontine nuclei proper appear to project only to the cerebellar cortex.

    Notes: Summary We examined modulation of transmission in short-latency, distal hindlimb cutaneous reflex pathways during fictive locomotion in 19 decerebrate cats. Fictive stepping was produced either by electrical stimulation of the mesencephalic locomotor region (MLR) or by administration of Nialamide and 1-DOPA to acutely spinalized animals. Postsynaptic potentials (PSPs) produced by electrical stimulation of low threshold afferents (〈 2.5 times threshold) in the superficial peroneal (SP), sural, saphenous or medial plantar nerves were recorded intracellularly from various extensor (n = 28) and flexor (n = 24) motoneurons and averaged throughout the step cycle, together with voltage responses to intrasomatic constant current pulses (in order to monitor relative cell input resistance). Each motoneuron studied displayed rhythmic background oscillations in membrane potential and correlated variations in input resistance. The average input resistance of extensor motoneurons was lowest during mid-flexion, when the cells were relatively hyperpolarized and silent. Conversely, average input resistance of flexor motoneurons was highest during mid-flexion, when they were depolarized and active. The amplitude of the minimum-latency excitatory components of PSPs produced by cutaneous nerve stimulation were measured from computer averaged records representing six subdivisions of the fictive step cycle. Oligosynaptic EPSP components were consistently modulated only in the superficial peroneal responses in flexor motoneurons, which exhibited enhanced amplitude during the flexion phase. With the other skin nerves tested (sural, saphenous, and plantar), no consistent patterns of modulation were observed during fictive locomotion. We conclude that transmission through some, but not all, oligosynaptic excitatory cutaneous pathways is enhanced by premotoneuronal mechanisms during the flexion phase of fictive stepping in several cat hindlimb motor nuclei. The present results suggest that the patterns of interaction between the locomotor central pattern generator and excitatory cutaneous reflex pathways depend on the source of afferent input and on the identity of the target motoneuron population.

    Notes: Summary In decerebrate, paralyzed and artificially ventilated cats, we recorded the discharge of 64 motor axons supplying the pharyngeal muscles. Filaments containing motor axons, with discharges related to the respiratory cycle (phrenic nerve activity), were teased from the pharyngeal branches of the vagus and glossopharyngeal nerves. Most units (n = 41) fired only during expiration and exhibited a steady, a decreasing or a late augmenting discharge pattern. These units were found only in vagal filaments. Twenty three units discharged during inspiration and exhibited a steady, a late augmenting or a tonic discharge pattern. The inspiratory-related units were present in both the vagus (n=13) and glossopharyngeal (n=10) nerves. Nineteen of 20 pharyngeal inspiratoryrelated units tested were activated at short latency (range 3.4 to 8.0 ms) by stimulation of afferents in the superior laryngeal nerve (SLN). In 13 of these, such stimulation also suppressed their spontaneous activity. SLN stimulation elicited in all 17 pharyngeal expiratory-related units tested a short latency (range 0 to 8 ms) reduction of activity, followed in 7 units by an increase in activity. SLN stimulation occasionally evoked single or rhythmic multifibre bursts in the vagal pharyngeal filaments. These bursts, involving expiratory-related units, likely correspond to the buccopharyngeal stage of swallowing.

    Notes: Summary In cortical area 3b of cats, responses of 76 single neurons to punctate indentations were recorded before and during iontophoretic administration of bicuculline methiodide (BMI), a GABAergic antagonist, at levels that did not affect spontaneous activity. Constant amplitude indentations were applied to selected sites along distalproximal and radial-ulnar axes that intersected the most sensitive area in the receptive field. Profiles of response magnitudes were used to measure receptive field dimensions before and during antagonism of GABAergic inhibition. Blockade of GABAergic transmission caused receptive field dimensions of 48 rapidly-adapting neurons to increase an average 141%, or nearly 2.5 times their original size. Analysis of the spatial distribution of inhibition indicated that in-field inhibition was larger than surround inhibition. During BMI administration, response latency was significantly longer for response elicited from the expanded territory than for responses elicited from within the original receptive field, suggesting that receptive field expansion might be mediated by multisynaptic intracortical connections. The magnitude of receptive field expansion was independent of receptive field size or peripheral location. In a substantial number of neurons, however, BMI produced asymmetric expansions that extended only in the proximal direction. For 9 slowly-adapting neurons, BMI produced measureable increases in receptive field dimensions, but these changes were significantly smaller than the changes in rapidly-adapting neurons.

    Notes: Summary Actions of excitatory amino acid (EAA) antagonists on the responses of cells in layers II/III and IV of the cat's visual cortex to stimulation of layer VI and the underlying white matter were studied in slice preparations. Antagonists used were 2-amino-5-phosphonovalerate (APV), a selective antagonist for the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) type of EAA receptors, and kynurenate, a broadspectrum antagonist for the three types of EAA receptors. In extracellular recordings it was demonstrated that most of the layer II/III cells were sensitive to APV, while the great majority of the layer IV cells were not, By contrast, kynurenate suppressed the responses completely in both layers. Excitatory post-synaptic potentials (EPSPs) evoked by stimulation of layer VI and the while matter were recorded intracellularly from layer II/III neurons. To determine whether the EPSPs were elicited mono- or polysynaptically, the synaptic delay for each EPSP was calculated from a pair of onset latencies of EPSPs evoked by stimulation of the two sites. Forty-two percent of the layer II/III cells were classified as having monosynaptic EPSPs. In 60% of these monosynaptic cells, the rising slope of the EPSPs was reduced by APV while in the other 40%, it was not. In the former (APV-sensitive cells), subtraction of the APV-sensitive component from the total EPSP indicated that the onset latency of the NMDA receptor-mediated component was roughly equal to that of the non-NMDA component. In the latter (APV-resistant cells), only the slowly-decaying component was in part mediated by NMDA receptors. The conduction velocities of the afferent fibers innervating APV-resistant cells were slower than those of the APV-sensitive cells, suggesting that both types of cells are innervated by different types of afferents. The polysynaptic EPSPs of almost all layer II/III cells were sensitive to APV. The subtraction method indicated that the NMDA component had about the same magnitude as the non-NMDA components. When the slices were superfused by a Mg2+-free solution, the EPSPs were potentiated dramatically, but this potentiation was reduced to the control level during the administration of APV. Similarly, APV-sensitive components were potentiated during the administration of bicuculline, a selective antagonist for gamma-aminobutyric acid receptors of A type. These results suggest that NMDA receptors participate, at varying degrees, in excitatory synaptic transmission at most layer II/III cells in the cat's visual cortex, and their actions appear to be regulated by intracortical inhibition.

    Notes: Summary The behavioural thermosensitivity of six cats was measured before and after single stage, symmetrical, bilateral, surgical lesions of the cervical spinal cord. The lesions were aimed at an area in the most ventral parts of the dorsal halves of the lateral funiculi. Unilateral lesions of that area have previously been found to cause reproducible, although subtotal, contralateral thermosensory defects, which were attributed to interruption of the thermosensory spinothalamic pathway. The lesions of three of the present cats were found to be incomplete, and those animals showed no postoperative thermosensory deficiency. Two of the cats with complete lesions showed marked post-operative defects, especially immediately after the operations, but the third cat with a complete lesion showed no postoperative thermosensory defect at all. The differences between the last three animals have been compared to the irregularity of previous reports about thermosensitivity after spinal cord lesions in man and animals, and may depend on the testing technique, rather than differences of thermosensitivity per se.

    Notes: Summary The morphology of single neurons in area 3b of cat primary somatosensory (SI) cortex was examined after horseradish peroxidase (HRP) injections. Neurons were labeled either by intracellular injection of HRP following intracellular recording or by small extracellular iontophoretic HRP injections. Both pyramidal and nonpyramidal neurons were labeled and reconstructed from serial sections. Their axons had local, interlaminar and interareal patterns of termination. Most neurons formed local axonal fields around their cell bodies and dendrites. Pyramidal neurons in cortical layer IV sent axons up into layers II and III, neurons in layers II and III sent axons down to layer V, and layer V neurons sent axons to layer VI as well as back to the upper layers. Layer VI neurons sent axons back to the upper cortical layers in a unique bowl-shaped pattern. The horizontal distribution of axons of pyramidal cells in layer III was extremely widespread. Axons of layer III neurons in area 3b terminated within 3b and area 1, but not in other areas of SI. Layer III neurons in area 1 distributed axon collaterals to all fields of SI as well as projecting a main axon to motor cortex. In general, the axon collaterals of area 3b pyramidal cells outside layer III remained confined to area 3b. Most of the nonpyramidal neurons labeled were basket cells in layers III and VI. These neurons formed dense axonal fields around their cell bodies, and none of their axons could be followed into the underlying white matter. The results of the present study demonstrate that area 3b somatosensory cortical neurons and their axons are vertically organized in a manner similar to that reported for other sensory cortical areas. They also show that widespread horizontal connections are formed by pyramidal neurons of layer III, and that these horizontal axons can travel for great distances in the cortical grey matter.

    Notes: Summary The role of the sensorimotor cortex in the postural adjustments associated with conditioned paw lifting movements was investigated in the cat. Cats were trained to stand quietly on four strain gauge equipped platforms and to perform a lift-off movement with one forelimb when a conditioned tone was presented. The parameters recorded were the vertical forces exerted by the paws on each platform, the lateral and antero-posterior displacements of rods implanted on the T2, T12, L5 vertebrae as well as their rotation, and the EMG of triceps and biceps of both forelimbs. Before lesion, the postural adjustment consisted of a “nondiagonal” pattern where the CG was displaced laterally inside the triangle formed by the three remaining supporting limbs. Here a lateral bending of the thoracic column toward the supporting forelimb could be observed. The associated EMG pattern consisted of an early activation of the triceps lateral head in the moving limb which was probably responsible for the body displacement toward the opposite side, and a late biceps activation associated with the lift. In the supporting forelimb, a coactivation of the biceps and triceps was usually present. After contralateral sensorimotor lesion, the conditioned lifting movements were lost for 4–15 days after the lesion, before being subsequently recovered. The same lateral CG displacement and bending of the back was seen after lesion as before, which indicates that the goal of postural adjustment was preserved. However, the means of reaching it were modified. In most of the intact animals, the CG displacement was achieved in one step, whereas in the animals with lesions, the displacement was made either according to a slow ramp mode or in a discontinuous manner involving several steps. The mechanisms responsible for this disturbance are discussed.

    Notes: Summary The role of intracortical inhibitory processes in the formation of neuronal receptive fields in the vibrissal projection zone of the somatosensory cortex was studied. Iontophoretic application of picrotoxin and bicuculline blocks the inhibition and causes the loss of directional sensitivity in neurons. Activation of inhibition by distant glutamate application gives opposite results — neurons become direction sensitive. A dependence was found between spatial location of activated cells and the pattern of changes of their detector properties. Inhibitory processes caused by natural afferent stimulation lead to similar changes in the functional properties of neurons.

    Notes: Summary It is now well established that during normal postnatal development there is a partial elimination of the callosal projections of cortical areas 17 and 18 in the cat and that visual experience early in life can modulate this process. In the present experiments, we quantitatively studied the influence of light, per se, by rearing cats in total darkness. Dark rearing exaggerates the normally occurring partial elimination of immature callosal projections: it causes a significant reduction in the total number of neurons in both the supra-and infragranular layers that send an axon through the corpus callosum and slightly narrows the distribution of these neurons across areas 17 and 18. These data demonstrate that visual stimulation is not necessary either to initiate the partial elimination of immature callosal projections or to stabilize a large fraction of the callosal projections present at birth. However, normal visual stimulation is necessary for the stabilization of the normal complement of callosal projections.

    Notes: Summary Our objective was to determine if caudal ventral respiratory group (VRG) expiratory (E) neurons that drive abdominal expiratory motoneurons in the lumbar cord respond to intercostal and lumbar nerve afferent stimulation. Results showed that 92% of medullary E-neurons that were antidromically activated from the upper lumbar cord reduced their activity in response to stimulation of external and internal intercostal and lumbar nerve afferents. We conclude that afferent information from intercostal and abdominal muscle tendon organs has an inhibitory effect on caudal VRG E-neurons that drive abdominal expiratory motoneurons.

    Notes: Abstract Intracellular recording techniques were used to examine and compare synaptic potentials evoked by stimulating pre- and postganglionic nerve trunks in cat bladder parasympathetic ganglia. In the 76 ganglion cells exammed, two types of responses were recorded on stimulating the postganglionic nerve: an antidromic action potential (type Post NS1;n=30) or a fast excitatory postsynaptic potential (f-EPSP; type PostNS2;n=46) which resulted in an orthodromic-like action potential. In some of the cells exhibiting a PostNS1 response (n=19), a fast depolarization was superimposed on the antidromic spike. This depolarization was due to the synaptic activation of nicotinic receptors. In many of the cells exhibiting either PostNS1 or PostNS2 responses, repetitive stimulation of the postganglionic nerve induced a slow hyperpolarization. Applying nicotinic (hexamethonium, methonium, 0.5–1 mM), muscarinic (atropine, 1 μM), alpha-adrenergic (phentolamine, 1 μM) and purinergic (caffeine, 0.5–1 mM) receptor antagonists completely inhibited the tetanus-induced slow hyperpolarization in some cells (n=5). In other cells (n=15), a slow hyperpolarization persisted in the presence of these antagonists. These results indicate that stimulation of the postganglionic nerve trunk of cat bladder parasympathetic ganglia can elicit not only an antidromic action potential, but also synaptic potentials which are mediated by the activation of cholinergic (nicotinic and muscarinic), noradrenergic and purinergic receptors, as well as a non-cholinergic, non-alpha-adrenergic and non-purinergic synaptic potential.

    Notes: Abstract The possible role of cholinergic mechanisms in the sub-commissural part of the globus pallidus (scGP) in the induction of oro-facial dyskinesia (OFD) was studied in cats. Local injections of the cholinergic agonist carbachol into the scGP elicited tongue protrusions in a dose dependent way (100–1000 ng/0.5 μl). The effect elicited by 1000 ng carbachol was selectively antagonized by the cholinergic antagonist scopolamine (10 μg/0.5 μl); this dose of scopolamine was ineffective when injected alone. The tongue protrusions resulted from both normal and abnormal movements: whereas normal movements simply consisted of protruding the flat tongue, abnormal movements implied a variety of movements, especially curling upwards the lateral side(s) or tip of the tongue inside or outside the oral cavity. The abnormal carbachol-induced tongue protrusions formed part of a syndrome marked by dyskinetic movements of the muscles of the eye, ear and cheek, and were identical to those seen previously after local injections of picrotoxin (250–500 ng). Intra-pallidal injections of the abovementioned dose of scopolamine had no effect on the tongue protrusions induced by local injections of 375 ng picrotoxin. However, local injections of 100 ng muscimol, which was previously found to attenuate significantly the effect of 375 ng picrotoxin and which was ineffective when injected alone, significantly attenuated the tongue protrusions induced by local injections of 1000 ng carbachol. These data suggest that the cholinergic effects are mediated via a GABAergic mechanism, but not vice versa. The results are discussed in view of GABAergic and anticholinergic therapies used in oro-facial dyskinesia.

The autoradiographic localisation of 5-HT3 recognition sites was also assessed using [3H]ICS 205-930 in slices from cat medulla oblongata, nodose ganglion and vagus nerve. [3H]ICS 205-930 bound to a homogeneous population of high affinity recognition sites in cat VN: Bmax = 201 ± 43 fmol/mg protein, pKD = 9.26 ± 0.17 and SCG: Bmax = 291 ± 40 fmol/mg, pKD = 9.35 ± 0.80 (n = 3). Competition experiments performed in membranes from cat VN and SCG with agonists and antagonists suggested the presence of a homogeneous population of [3H]ICS 205-930 recognition sites. Competition curves were steep and monophasic and were best fitted by a 1 receptor site model. The following rank order of affinity for [3H]ICS 205-930 binding sites was observed with antagonists: SDZ 206-830 = ICS 205-930 〉 BRL 43694 〉 SDZ 206–792 〉 quipazine 〉 MDL 72222 〉 metoclopramide 〉 mCPP and agonists: 2-methyl-5-HT = 5-HT 〉 phenylbiguanide. A similar profile was observed for a limited series of compounds in rabbit membranes. Drugs acting at 5-HT1, 5-HT2 and dopamine receptors (domperidone, spiperone and metergoline) showed very low affinities for [3H]ICS 205-930 recognition sites. The sites labelled with [3H]ICS 205-930 in vagus nerve and superior cervical ganglion of both species displayed the pharmacological profile of a 5-HT3 receptor. There was a significant correlation between the rank order of affinity of the tested compounds for [3H]ICS 205-930 recognition sites in cat and rabbit membranes and their rank order of affinity for 5-HT3 receptors from neuroblastoma-glioma NG 108-15 cells. Autoradiographic studies suggest that [3H]ICS 205-930 binding sites are present over and around the nodose ganglion cell somata, along certain fibers of the vagus nerve and in the terminal areas of this nerve in the medullar nucleus of the vagus. The present data demonstrate that [3H]ICS 205-930 identifies 5-HT3 receptors in preparations of cat and rabbit vagus nerve and superior cervical ganglion.

    Notes: Summary In anaesthetized cats, the nucleus of the solitary tract was bilaterally superfused through push-pull cannulae with artificial cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and the effect of carotid occlusion on the release of endogenous GABA was investigated. Bilateral carotid occlusion led to a rise in blood pressure which was associated with a very pronounced increase in the release rate of GABA in the nucleus of the solitary tract. The results demonstrate the hypertensive function of GABA in the nucleus of the solitary tract and the importance of GABAergic neurons of this nucleus for the central cardiovascular control.

    Notes: Summary The neuronal subpopulations in the cat stellate, lower lumbar and sacral sympathetic ganglia were studied with regard to the cellular distribution of immunoreactivity to tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and various neuronal peptides. Coexistence of neuropeptide Y (NPY)- and galanin (GAL)-like immunoreactivity (LI) was found in a high proportion of the neuronal cell bodies; these cells also contained immunoreactivity to TH, confirming their presumably noradrenergic nature. Some TH- and GAL-immunoreactive principal ganglion cells lacked NPY-LI. Two populations (scattered and clustered) of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP)- and peptide histidine isoleucine (PHI)-positive cell bodies were found in the sympathetic ganglia studied. The scattered VIP/PHI neurons also contained AChE-LI, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)-and, following culture, substance P (SP)-LI. The clustered type only contained AChE-LI. In the submandibular and sphenopalatine ganglia, neurons were AChE- and VIP/ PHI-immunoreactive but lacked CGRP- and SP-LI. Many GAL- and occasional TH-positive neurons were found in these ganglia. In the spinal ganglia, single NPY-immunoreactive sensory neuronal cells were observed, in addition to CGRP- and SP-positive neurons. The present results show that there are at least two populations of sympathetic cholinergic neurons in the cat. Retrograde tracing experiments indicate that the scattered type of cholinergic neurons contains four vasodilator peptides (VIP, PHI, CGRP, SP) and provides an important input to sweat glands, whereas the clustered type (containing VIP and PHI) mainly innervates blood vessels in muscles.

    Notes: Summary Electron microscopy of cat parotid glands revealed great heterogeneity in the secretory granules of normal unstimulated acinar cells. Electrical stimulation of the parasympathetic nerve to the gland evoked a copious flow of parotid saliva which was accompanied by an extensive depletion of the secretory granules from the acinar cells. Exocytosis was captured as it was occurring by means of perfusion-fixation, and showed that the events occur in a conventional manner. Stimulation of the sympathetic nerve caused only a very small flow of saliva, and no acinar degranulation was detected. It can be concluded that the parasympathetic secretomotor axons provide the main drive for parotid acinar degranulation in the cat. This contrasts with the rat in which sympathetic impulses provide the main stimulus for parotid acinar degranulation. These dissimilarities serve to emphasise how extensively species differences may influence autonomic responses in salivary glands.

    Notes: Abstract Helical electrodes were implanted around the left and right common peroneal nerves of cats. Three weeks after implantation one nerve was stimulated for 4–16 hours using charge-balanced, biphasic, constant current pulses. Compound action potentials (CAP) evoked by the stimulus were recorded from over the cauda equina before, during and after the stimulation. Light and electron microscopy evaluations were conducted at various times following the stimulation. The mere presence of the electrode invariably resulted in thickened epineurium and in some cases increased peripheral endoneurial connective tissue beneath the electrodes. Physiologic changes during stimulation included elevation of the electrical threshold of the large axons in the nerve. This was reversed within one week after stimulation at a frequency of 20 Hz, but often was not reversed following stimulation at 50–100 Hz. Continuous stimulation at 50 Hz for 8–16 hours at 400 μA or more resulted in neural damage characterized by endoneurial edema beginning within 48 hours after stimulation, and early axonal degeneration (EAD) of the large myelinated fibers, beginning by 1 week after stimulation. Neural damage due to electrical stimulation was decreased or abolished by reduction of the duration of stimulation, by stimulating at 20 Hz (vs. 50 Hz) or by use of an intermittent duty cycle. These results demonstrate that axons in peripheral nerves can be irreversely damaged by 8–16 hours of continuous stimulation at 50 Hz. However, the extent to which these axons may subsequently regenerate is uncertain. Therefore, protocols for functional electrical stimulation in human patients probably should be evaluated individually in animal studies.

    Notes: Summary The fetal microvascular architecture of the feline near-term placenta was investigated using scanning electron micrographs of partially fractured corrosion casts from plastic-filled vessels. The findings were compared with those on corresponding semithin histological sections. The branches of both umbilical arteries and veins roughly follow a course parallel to the zonary girdle on the allantochorionic side of the feline placenta in an acute-angled pattern of ramifications. They join the double-layered capilary networks in the chorionic lamellae of the labyrinth, which generally exhibit a chorio-uterine orientation and are partially twirled. On the allantochorionic side of the labyrinth, these fetal capillary networks are “suspended” on the maternal stem-artery-system of the placenta; on the uterine side, they have peduncular or tuft-like endings of capillary loops and are flattened by the uterine septa, which at this level converge into the maternal veins. The chorionic capillary lamellae have a variable breadth and length and therefore need shorter or longer arterioles and venules from the allantochorionic side to become irrigated at any level of the labyrinth. As a result, the feline placenta is characterized by a generally one-way crosscurrent type of materno-fetal blood flow.

    Notes: Summary The termination of the fibers from the dorsal column nuclei (DCN) to the midbrain has been investigated in the cat with the degeneration method, the anterograde horseradish peroxidase (HRP) method and autoradiography after 3H-leucine injections. The results show that the DCN project to several midbrain regions. The external nucleus of the inferior colliculus (IX) receives the heaviest projection from both the gracile and cuneate nuclei. The DCN fibers form three joint terminal zones in IX. Each terminal zone contains clusters with dense aggregations of DCN fibers. Fairly dense terminal networks are found in the posterior pretectal nucleus (PP) and the compact part of the anterior pretectal nucleus (PAc) as well. More scattered DCN fibers are present in the cuneiform nucleus (CF), the lateral part of the periaqueductal gray (PAG1), the red nucleus (NR), the nucleus of the brachium of the inferior colliculus (B), the mesencephalic reticular formation (MRF) and the intermediate and deep layers of the superior colliculus (SI, SP). The projections to all regions are mainly contralateral. Most of the few ipsilateral fibers terminate in IX. A somatotopic organization was seen in IX and NR. The gracile fibers terminate preferentially in the caudal and lateral part of IX and the cuneate ones preferentially in its rostral and medial part. In the red nucleus the gracile fibers terminate ventral to the cuneate ones. In the pretectal region there was a predominance for gracile fibers. There also appeared to be quantitative differences in the projections from various levels of the gracile nucleus, with more midbrain projecting fibers originating in the rostral than in the middle and caudal parts of the nucleus.

    Notes: Summary In a series of comparative anatomical studies on the ceca of various mammals the cat was chosen as representative of a “typical” carnivore. In the domestic cat, the cecum is conspicuously small and macroscopically relatively undifferentiated in comparison to most herbivores. Microscopically (light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy), however, it is characterized by an abundance of goblet cells and enterocytes rich in organelles, suggestive of functional activity. In addition to the morphological description, which also includes arterial supply and mesenteries of the cecum, the discussion is focussed on 1) the possible functional significance of the numerous goblet cells 2) a general categorization of the different types of ileal-caeco-colical junctions and 3) speculations concerning the justification for considering the carnivore cecum as being rudimentary.

    Notes: Summary The projections to the midbrain from the spinal cord have been investigated in the cat with the degeneration technique and by using horseradish peroxidase (HRP) as an anterograde tracer. Two types of spinal cord lesions were performed: 1) Cordotomies at cervical or thoracic levels transecting the ventral and lateral funiculi. 2) Transections of the ventral, ventrolateral, dorsolateral or dorsal funiculus, respectively, at cervical levels. In the anterograde tracing experiments HRP was injected into the spinal cord at cervical, lumbar or sacral levels. The results show large projections to the lateral and ventrolateral parts of the periaqueductal gray (PAG1), the posterior pretectal nucleus (PP) and the nucleus of Darkschewitsch (D). More moderate projections go to the medial division of the periaqueductal gray (PAGm), the cuneiform nucleus (CF), the mesencephalic reticular formation (MRF), lateral part of the deep layer of the superio colliculus (SP) and magnocellular medial geniculate nucleus (GMmc), while scattered spinal fibers are present in the dorsal part of the periaqueductal gray (PAGd), the external inferior collicular nucleus (IX), the intermediate layer of the superior colliculus (SI), the lateral part of the red nucleus (NR) and in the Edinger-Westphal portion of the oculomotor nucleus (3). In addition a few fibers are present in the interstitial nucleus of Cajal (CA) and anterior pretectal nucleus (PAc). The results indicate that at midcervical levels most of the spinomesencephalic fibers ascend in the ventral funiculus, with only a moderate fraction ascending in the ventral half of the lateral funiculus. Almost no fibers ascend in the dorso-lateral funiculus and none appear to pass in the dorsal funiculus. No distinct somatotopic pattern was found in the spinomesencephalic projections, but more fibers from cervicobrachial segments terminate in the rostral than in the caudal parts of the terminal fields in PAG, CF, SP and IX, while the lumbar fibers were more numberous in the caudal parts. PP seems to receive spinal fibers mainly from the caudal half of the cord.

    Notes: Summary Injections of 3H-leucine were made in the entopeduncular nucleus or dentate nucleus of the cerebellum in eight cats. The terminal projection zones of both pathways in the thalamus were studied using the sagittal plane and their relationships to one another as well as to cytoarchitectural boundaries of thalamic nuclei were compared. The data indicate that the territories controlled by the two projection systems are almost entirely segregated. The segregation is mainly along the antero-posterior axis as the main pallidal projection zone occupies the medio-ventral VA while the main dentate projection zone lies posterior to it in the VL. Furthermore, the dorsolateral part of the VA not occupied by pallidal projections receives dentate projections. In the VM, both afferent systems terminate in the lateral part of the nucleus with pallidal territory located anteriorly and dentate territory located posteriorly, again without overlap. As the delineations of nuclear subdivisions in the ventral thalamus of the cat have been a subject of some controversy, it is suggested that the boundaries of the VA, VL and VM in the cat thalamus be defined on the basis of basal ganglia and cerebellar projection zones.

    Notes: Summary The fluorescent retrograde double-labeling technique has been used to determine whether corticospinal neurons in the cat sensorimotor cortex distribute collaterals to the lower brain stem reticular formation. In this study the fluorescent tracers Nuclear Yellow and Diamidino Yellow 2HCl were used in combination with Fast Blue. One tracer was injected unilaterally in the spinal cord and the other was injected ipsilaterally in the bulbar medial reticular formation. The distribution of the retrogradely labeled neurons was studied in the contralateral hemisphere. In the sensorimotor cortex a large population of neurons was found which were labeled from the spinal cord and were double-labeled from the brain stem. These branching neurons were concentrated in the rostromedial part of area 4 and the adjoining lateral part of area 6. In this region the percentages of corticospinal neurons which were double-labeled from the brain stem ranged from 5% laterally to 30% medially. In two cats it was demonstrated by means of the anterograde transport of HRP that the corticobulbar fibers from this region which must include the corticospinal collaterals are distributed to the reticular formation of the lower brain stem. In view of the fact that the double-labeled neurons are concentrated in the anterior part of the motor cortex, those branching neurons are in all likelihood involved in the control of neck, back and shoulder movements. This control is probably exerted by way of two routes i.e. by way of the direct corticospinal connections to spinal interneurons, and by way of the indirect cortico-reticulospinal connections established by the cortical fibers to the bulbar reticular formation. The present findings suggest that this dual control may be exerted by one and the same cell.

    Notes: Summary (1) Ipsilateral cortico-cortical and thalamo-cortical projections to the cat motor cortex were determined from the locations of retrogradely labeled neurons following single small intracortical injections of HRP in area 4γ. These projections were also examined by studying the distribution of anterogradely transported axonal label following multiple injections of HRP or of tritiated amino acids in areas 1–2 of SI and in area 2pri (SII). (2) The number of retrogradely labeled cells in areas 1–2 and in area 2pri differed markedly between HRP injection sites located in the precruciate (anterior sigmoid gyrus) and postcruciate (posterior sigmoid gyrus) subregions of area 4γ. These associational projections from primary and secondary somatosensory cortices were dense to postcruciate subrogions but weak to the precruciate subregions. (3) The associational projections from areas 1–2 and from area 2pri to the postcruciate subregion of area 4γ were topographically organized, but no clear topographic organization could be demonstrated for the precruciate projection. (4) Anterograde terminal labeling following injection of either HRP or tritiated amino acids into areas 1–2 and area 2pri confirmed the preferential projection of somatosensory cortex to the postcruciate subregion of motor cortex. The projection from somatosensory areas 1–2 was uniform over its terminal field, but that from area 2pri was more patchy and complex. (5) HRP injections in area 4γ gave rise to lamellae of labeled neurons in the ventrolateral nucleus of thalamus (VL). A topographic relationship was found between the site of injection and the location of the lamella of labeled neurons. (6) The percentage of retrogradely labeled neurons in the shell zone surrounding the border of the ventrolateral nucleus and the ventrobasal complex (VB) was greater following postcruciate than precruciate injections, whereas fewer retrogradely labeled neurons were found in central lateral nucleus (CL) after postcruciate injections than after precruciate injections. (7) These observations support the hypothesis that differential cortical and thalamic projections to different subregions of area 4γ may give rise to the different physiological properties of neurons observed in these subregions (Vicario et al. 1983; Martin et al. 1981).

    Notes: Summary Pyramidal command of Skin Potential Response (SPR) was investigated in 20 cats paralyzed by gallamine and under a halothane anaesthetic. For each animal, a transection of the medulla sparing only the pyramidal tract was carried out. The pyramidal tract and Mesencephalic Reticular Formation (MRF) were stimulated before and after the transection. Results taken before transection show that the SPR can be elicited from stimulation of the pyramidal tract and the MRF. After transection, stereotaxic stimulations of the pyramidal tract still evoked the SPR even after aspiration of the medullary tissue posterior to the section and overlying the pyramids. Control reticular stimulations with higher stimulus intensities failed to evoke the SPR. These results show that stimulation of the pyramidal tract can elicit the SPR independently of reticulospinal neurons. It is hypothesized that a group of corticospinal fibers could transmit volleys having autonomic activity on preganglionic autonomic neurons of the intermediate zone of the grey matter.

The animal uses early derivatives of display movement to scale force responses to target stimuli of different sizes according to a learned relationship between initial display motion and required force (Ghez and Vicario 1978a, 1978b). In the present study we altered that relationship by using double stimulation and delayed feedback to assess the animals' ability to update their responses. 2. In experiments where a second target stimulus followed the first after a controlled interval (15–120 ms) on random trials, the animal modified its response in the appropriate direction with little or no increase in reaction time. When the second stimulus called for a return to baseline, the animal aborted the ongoing response. When the second stimulus called for a doubling of force, the animal increased its phasic force output; however, this increase was not sufficient to reach the new target level and late responses were emitted. 3. The control response which followed each experimental double stimulation trial showed consistent differences from other controls in the amplitude of both peak force and peak dF/dt. Control responses following trials calling for a return were reduced in size; those following stimuli requiring response doubling were increased. We concluded that the experimental trials not only elicited modification of ongoing responses but also caused the animal to alter its internalized gain function relating initial display derivatives to required force. 4. In experiments where feedback was delayed after giving a first target stimulus such that the compensatory display failed to reflect the animal's initial response, the animal emitted a new updated response 70–80 ms after the first. The display trajectory which caused the cat to update its response on delayed feedback trial was identical to that of control trials with long reaction times. In this case, however, the information eliciting response updating had to be derived as a difference between the actual display trajectory and that expected by the animal, based on its experience with the tracking task. This suggests that the animal develops an internal model of display properties which is used to determine when a new response is required.

At the same time dorsal root section or ganglionectomy was performed over segments L6-S1. Completeness of the deafferentation was subsequently confirmed either by dissection or by dorsal root recording. The isometric and forcevelocity properties of the muscles were measured. In animals with a unilateral cross plus deafferentation the conversion of the contractile properties of the normally slow-twitch soleus to those resembling a fast-twitch muscle was typical of that seen with an intact afferent supply. In cats with a bilateral cross-reinnervation and unilateral deafferentation there was no significant difference in the degree of transformation between the two sides. It is concluded that at least for the conversion of a slow-twitch to a fast-twitch muscle afferent feedback does not play a major role.

    Notes: Summary The localization and morphology of spinal respiratory motoneurones (phrenic and intercostal) were studied in the cat by retrograde labelling using Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP), at different stages of postnatal development. At birth, the distribution of the phrenic and intercostal motoneurones in the cervical and thoracic ventral horn, respectively, is similar to that observed in adult animals. At birth, the phrenic and intercartilaginous motoneurone somata have respectively 60% and 40% of their adult volume, appearing much more developed than the motoneurones involved in the motor control of limbs. During postnatal development, the phrenic and intercartilaginous motoneurones undergo a characteristic sagittal elongation without evident modification along their transverse axes. From birth, the ratio of the somatic volume to that of its corresponding motor column markedly decreases inside of the phrenic column compared to the data obtained in the limb's muscle motor columns by other authors. Similar determinations in intercostal motor columns give intermediate values between those obtained from the phrenic column and from the motor system. These results indicate that the motoneurones innervating the respiratory muscles have some specific features of development.

    Notes: Summary The ascending connections from the brainstem to the dorsal division of the lateral geniculate nucleus were examined using retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase. Labelled cells were identified in a variety of structures, including the nucleus of the optic tract (NOT), the posterior pretectal nucleus (NPP), the superior colliculus (SC), the parabigeminal nucleus (PBN), the midbrain reticular formation (MRF), locus coeruleus and nucleus sub-coeruleus, the substantia nigra (SN), and parts of the raphe complex. The projections from NOT, NPP, MRF, LC and PBN were all bilateral in origin. The most intense labelling was observed in the nucleus of the optic tract and the superior colliculus. Colliculo-geniculate cells were located primarily in the superficial gray lamina II1 and II2 of Kaneseki and Sprague (1974), but sparse labelling was also observed in lamina II3 and in statum opticum (lamina III). Consistent with the report of Harrell et al. (1982), these cells represent a morphologically diverse population, which includes stellate cells, granule cells, and both vertical and horizontal fusiform cells. A similarly diverse population of cell types contributes to the geniculate projection arising from NOT. These results confirm and extend earlier descriptions of the brainstem projections to the cat LGNd, and serve to emphasize the diversity of brainstem influences over the geniculate.

    Notes: Summary Extracellular and intracellular recordings were made from spinocerebellar tract neurones of the central cervical nucleus (CCN) in C1–C3 segments of the anaesthetized cat. These neurones were identified by antidromic activation from the cerebellar peduncle. Stimulation of the ipsilateral dorsal root elicited extracellular spikes or EPSPs with a monosynaptic latency in almost all CCN neurones in the same segment (segmental input). Late excitatory effects were also observed in about one third of CCN neurones. The monosynaptic EPSP was occasionally followed by an IPSP. The excitatory input from the dorsal root to CCN neurones was extended over several segments for some CCN neurons (extrasegmental input). Monosynaptic excitation was evoked in CCN neurones after stimulation of dorsal neck muscle nerves as well; i.e. splenius (SPL), biventer cervicis and complexus (BCC), rectus capitus dorsalis, and obliquus capitus caudalis. Thresholds for this excitation were near the threshold of the nerve, suggesting that it originated from group I fibres. The component of excitation added after strong stimulation of neck muscle nerves would be attributed to group II fibres. When a CCN neurone received excitatory input from the nerve of one muscle, it was generally not affected by stimulation of other nerves in the same segment. Such muscle specificity of segmental input was the principal pattern of connexion of neck muscle afferents with CCN neurones. In some cases, however, excitatory convergence from SPL and BCC nerves onto single CCN neurones or excitation from the SPL nerve and inhibition from the BCC nerve were also observed. Nearly half of the CCN neurones received input from one muscle nerve of the same segment and not from the afferent of the same muscle of different segments, indicating a segment specificity of input. In the remaining CCN neurones, weaker excitatory effects were induced from afferents of different segments as well. In such extrasegmental effects, inputs to CCN neurones from caudal segments predominated in frequency over those from rostral segments. The origin of extrasegmental input was generally confined to the same muscle. Low threshold muscle afferents from the SPL and BCC were intraaxonally stained with HRP. The collaterals of the stained fibre distributed branchlets and terminals to the CCN, laminae VII, VIII, and motor nuclei. Two fibres responding to local muscle prodding or stretch showed a similar morphology. The findings indicated that muscle spindle afferents from primary endings projected to the CCN.

    Notes: Summary Spinocerebellar tract (SCT) neurones in and around the central cervical nucleus (CCN) were physiologically identified by antidromic activation of these cells on stimulation of the cerebellum. Among the Spinocerebellar tract cells thus identified, those ascending the contralateral spinal funiculi were found in the CCN and ventralwards, whereas those ascending the ipsilateral funiculi existed mostly dorsal to the CCN partly overlapping with crossed cells in the nucleus. Mapping sites from which CCN cells were antidromically activated showed that axons of the CCN-SCT cross at the same segment, ascend the ventral funiculus initially, the lateral funiculus at rostral C1 and the lateral border of the medulla to reach the cerebellar peduncle, enter the cerebellum mainly via the restiform body but possibly also via the superior peduncle. Systematic mapping of stimulation within the cerebellum indicated that the CCNSCT projects to the medial part of the anterior lobe and the posterior lobe bilaterally. Projection to lobules I–II was found in almost all CCN-SCT cells examined. Three fourths of CCN-SCT cells projected to the posterior lobe, as revealed by less extensive mapping. Mapping of axonal regions of the same single CCN-SCT cells showed that they project multifocally in the cerebellum, where projection to lobules I–II was common and that to other areas varied with individual cells. Conduction velocites decreased within the cerebellum probably as the result of repeated branching. Mossy fibre responses evoked on stimulation of the C2 dorsal root in cats with the transected dorsal funiculi were shown to be mediated mostly via the CCN-SCT. Mapping the field potential showed that the response was by far the largest in lobules I–II. This suggested that the terminals provided by the CCN-SCT are the densest in these lobules.

    Notes: Summary Endogenous peroxidase-like activity was investigated with a combined light and electron microscopical technique in 15 cats. The lateral cervical nucleus, the dorsal column nuclei, and segments C6 and L5 of the spinal cord were incubated with diaminobenzidine-tetrahydrochloride (DAB) or tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). After histochemical reaction with DAB a considerable amount of activity was found in nerve cells, astrocytes and pericytes. The neuronal labelling was mainly located in mitochondria of axon terminals and in dendrites whereas the astrocytic and pericytic activity was found in cytoplasmic dense bodies. The quantity of stained structures differed considerably between the animals. In TMB reacted tissue endogenous peroxidase-like activity was only sparsely seen. It was found mainly in frozen sections, in which the neuropil and perivascular structures sometimes contained granules and irregular filaments. The significance of the findings is discussed in relation to observations in tracer studies using horseradish peroxidase.

    Notes: Summary Horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) were studied before and after lesions within the accessory optic system (AOS) in the cat. Post-lesion retinal input to the AOS was evaluated using the autoradiographic technique. Unilateral lesion of the lateral terminal nucleus of the AOS (LTN) and the resulting retinal deafferentation of the medial terminal nucleus of the AOS (MTN) induced a spontaneous nystagmus in the dark whose slow phase was directed ipsilaterally to the lesion. VOR gain was reduced for both directions with a maximal decrease for stimulation directed ipsilaterally to the lesion. OKN gain obtained for both directions of binocular stimulation was decreased, mainly when the stimulus was directed contralaterally to the lesion. After two postoperative weeks, spontaneous nystagmus disappeared and the VOR symmetry recovered simultaneously. A symmetrical OKN was only observed after one month. In spite of the known visual selectivity for vertical direction in LTN-MTN cells, the results of this study support a functional involvement of these nuclei in horizontal VOR and OKN.

    Notes: Summary The response properties of cat horizontal canal afferents (N = 81) were characterized by three parameters: their long time constants (τ), low frequency gain constants (G1), and middle frequency gain constants (Gm). An average value of each of these parameters was calculated for each of eight animals and comparisons were made across animals. There were significant differences between individual animals in their average values of τ and Gm. There was also a significant negative correlation between τ's and Gm's. An animal with a larger average τ tended to have a smaller average Gm. We also used anatomic data on membranous canal duct diameter from the literature to independently estimate the potential effect of interanimal anatomic variability on the predicted range of τ and Gm values in a population. We then compared the data from our 81 afferents with the predictions from the anatomic data.

    Notes: Summary In anaesthetized cats (chloralose-urethan) the effects of brief tetanic electrical stimulation (50 to 100 ms) of the mesencephalic central gray matter and reticular formation on the inspiratory on-switch were studied during the expiratory (E) phase on the gross and unitary activities of phrenic, laryngeal inspiratory and laryngeal expiratory nerves. On the inspiratory laryngeal and phrenic nerves, stimulation elicited a short latency gross response concomitant with the train: the inspiratory Primary Response (Prim.R.) which is followed by an inspiratory Patterned Response (Patt.R.) of longer duration which corresponded to the inspiratory on-switch. The Patt.R. generally appeared from the Prim.R. within a latent period (Silent Phase: Sil.P.) as long as 100 ms. On the expiratory laryngeal nerve, stimulation elicited a brief activation (expiratory Prim.R.) concomitant with the beginning of the inspiratory laryngeal Prim.R. and which rapidly stopped as the latter continued during the stimulus train. The inspiratory Prim.R. corresponded to a simultaneous activation of both early and late (so defined during their spontaneous discharge) inspiratory motoneurones. The laryngeal motoneurones were more strongly activated than the phrenic ones. During the inspiratory Patt.R. all the phrenic motoneurones presented a recruitment delay earlier, compared with the spontaneous one, whereas the recruitment drastically changed from an inspiratory laryngeal motoneurone to another. Thus, the two pools of motoneurones presented different properties of activation. During the inspiratory Sil.P. no concomitant expiratory laryngeal activation was observed when most of the inspiratory motoneurones were inactive. As some inspiratory laryngeal motoneurones did not stop firing, the existence of some central respiratory neurones exhibiting a similar persistent activity and subserving the inspiratory on-switch mechanisms may be hypothesized.

    Notes: Summary Ascending projections from the nucleus of the brachium of the inferior colliculus (NBIC) in the cat were studied by the autoradiographic tracing method. Many fibers from the NBIC ascend ipsilaterally in the lateral tegmentum along the medial border of the brachium of the inferior colliculus. At midbrain levels, fibers from the NBIC end in the superior colliculus, the pretectum, the central gray and the peripeduncular tegmental region bilaterally with ipsilateral predominance. NBIC fibers to the superior colliculus are distributed densely to laminae VI an III throughout the whole rostrocaudal extent of the colliculus. In the pretectum, NBIC fibers terminate in the anterior and medial nuclei and the nucleus of the posterior commissure. NBIC fibers to the dorsal thalamus are distributed largely ipsilaterally. Many NBIC fibers end in the dorsal and medial divisions of the medial geniculate body, but few in the ventral division. The NBIC also sends fibers to the suprageniculate, limitans and lateralis posterior nuclei and the lateral portion of the posterior nuclear complex; these regions of termination of NBIC fibers constitute, as a whole, a single NBIC recipient sector. Additionally, the NBIC sends fibers to the centralis lateralis, medialis dorsalis, paraventricular and subparafascicular nuclei of the thalamus.

    Notes: Summary Four cats labyrinthectomized shortly after birth (DELAB) exhibited the classical vestibular syndrome and recovery, while their motor development was otherwise unimpaired. As adults, they were tested for visual vestibular substitution in a locomotor task with either orientation requirements (tilted platforms) or balance requirements (narrow platforms). Visual motion cues or static visual cues were controlled using normal or stroboscopic lighting, or darkness. Measurements of the average speed of locomotion showed that: Although all cats increase their speed when more visual cues become available, a marked deficit occurs in darkness only in the DELAB cats. With either vestibular cues alone or static visual cues alone, cats are able to reach the same level of performance in the tilted platform test, which suggests a total visual-vestibular interchangeability in orientation. DELAB cats perform very poorly in the narrow rail test. When continuous vision is allowed in the narrow rail test the DELABs' performance rises but does not match that of the control group. A specific deficit in balance for the DELAB group is thus reduced by normal continuous vision as compared to stroboscopic vision, suggesting a significant, though imperfect, substitution of motion visual cues for the missing dynamic vestibular cues. Dynamic visual cues play only a minor role in most situations, when locomotory speed is high. This results support the view that both the vestibular and the visual system can subserve two distinct functions: dynamic information may stabilize the stance in narrow unstable situations, during slow locomotion. and static orientation cues may mainly control the direction for displacement. Possible interactions between head positioning and body orientation in the DELAB cats are discussed.

    Notes: Summary Twenty-nine pigmented offspring of an innately esotropic female cat exhibited varying deficits in the number of binocular cells recorded in area 17 of the visual cortex as compared to 12 normal cats. Misalignment of the two eyes in these cats was found in the awake as well as in the paralysed state. Pupillography combined with measurements of visual disparity yielded abnormal esotropia of up to 8.4° under paralysis, which corresponds to an abnormal convergence of the freely moving eyes of up to 14° (average 7.4°). In the majority of animals cortical binocularity was found reduced by the two eyes controlling independent sets of separate units (U-shaped ocular dominance distribution) whereas in 7 cats the reduction was due to a partial loss of one eye's influence. The proportion of monocular units correlated with the degree of crossover of the visual axes (r = 0.73). Anatomical investigation of the retinofugal projections revealed normal appearance in three previously recorded cats in which more than 50% of cortical units had been monocularly driven. The small angles of esotropia and the “normal” appearance of eye position judged by the pupillary positions in the orbit of these cats, might suggest that we found an animal model for microstrabismus.

    Notes: Summary Previous experiments have shown that the ERG response to alternating gratings vanishes gradually within 4 months after transection of the optic nerve, changes begin after 2–3 weeks. The response to gratings of low spatial frequencies deteriorates earlier than the response to gratings of high spatial frequencies (Maffei and Fiorentini 1981). Quantitative analysis of ganglion cell sizes in retinal wholemounts shows that ganglion cell shrinkage and ganglion cell loss begin at three weeks in the periphery of the retina, particularly in the temporal retina. The same morphological alteration subsequently becomes apparent also in the area centralis and the nasal retina, respectively. The main and early cell loss occurs among medium sized ganglion cells, supposedly the beta-cells. Among the alpha-cells only shrinkage is observed up to two months postoperatively. Light- and electron microscopic examination of cross sections through the retina show that pathological changes are restricted to the innermost layers.

    Notes: Summary Evidence that glutamate acts as a neuro-transmitter in vestibular nerve fibers was sought (1) by electron microscope radioautographic identification of the uptake sites of [3H]-glutamic acid after incubation of slices of cat vestibular nuclei, and (2) by measuring changes in sodium-dependent high affinity glutamate uptake in nerve endings containing homogenates from normal and deafferented vestibular nuclei 8 to 11 days after unilateral vestibular nerve lesion. Electron microscopic radioautography revealed that glutamate had been taken up by numerous nerve endings projecting over the whole vestibular nuclear complex. The biochemical approach indicated that after section of the vestibular nerve, a significant decrease in high affinity glutamate uptake occurred in the vestibular nuclei, which lost their exclusively ipsilateral projection. This decrease varied from one area of the deafferented vestibular nuclei to another, reaching −58% in the lateral area of the central part corresponding to the ventral lateral vestibular nucleus and the rostral part of the descending vestibular nucleus. It is concluded that glutamate (or aspartate) is used by the vestibular nerve fibers as a neurotransmitter in the vestibular nuclei.

    Notes: Summary (1) The “fictitious” scratch reflex was evoked in decerebrate curarized cats by pinna stimulation. Activity of neurons of the ventral spinocerebellar tract (VSCT) from the L4 and L5 segments of the spinal cord as well as of neurons of the spinoreticulo-cerebellar pathway (SRCP) from the lateral reticular nucleus of the medulla oblongata was recorded. Cooling and destruction of different parts of the lumbo-sacral enlargement of the spinal cord were performed. (2) Cooling of the L5 or L6 segment abolished the rhythmic activity in the greater part of the spinal hindlimb centre but did not affect the generation of rhythmic oscillations in the remaining (rostral) segments of the lumbo-sacral enlargement. Under these conditions, neither the rhythmic activity of VSCT neurons located rostral to the thermode nor that of SRCP neurons changed. (3) A normal rhythmic activity of SRCP neurons also persisted after destruction of grey matter in the L3 and L4 segments. It can be concluded that activity of these neurons is independent of whichever part of the enlargement generates rhythmic oscillations. (4) From these observations a hypothesis is advanced that the main content of signals conveyed by the VSCT and SRCP to the cerebellum is the information regarding activity of the generator of rhythmic oscillations that is located in the L3-L5 spinal segments.

    Notes: Summary Neurons in the parietal region of the cerebral cortex, projecting to the ipsilateral distal forelimb area of the motor cortex (area 4γ) were identified in the cat brain using the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) retrograde tracing method. After making microinjections of HRP into the distal forelimb area of the motor cortex, clusters of HRP-labeled cell bodies were observed in different regions of the ipsilateral parietal cortex. In particular these clusters of labeled cells were found in areas 5a, 5b and 7. The area 5a cluster is formed from closely packed irregularly-shaped cells, the area 5b cluster is made up of dispersed medium-sized pyramidal cells, while area 7 contains a cluster of widely dispersed small pyramidal cells. Typically, labeled cell bodies were found in lamina III of cortex. Labeled cell bodies were neither observed in the contralateral cortex nor in the visual cortex (areas 17, 18 and 19). Since parietal cortex receives projections from primary somatosensory and visual cortex, the projections from parietal to motor cortex may well form the neural substrate for the processing of convergent sensory information used in voluntary movements.

    Notes: Summary Modifications have been made in Mesulam's method for labelling neurons by retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase, with tetramethylbenzidine as chromogen, with the object of increasing the extent of labelling of dendrites and axons. A procedure was devised specifically for studying spinomedullary and medullospinal tract systems, involving implanting easily-made HRP-agar pellets into areas of controlled damage in particular spinal fascicles, and sealing the site of implant with cyanoacrylate glue. Lesions of other fascicles were often made to limit transport to the implanted fascicle. Fourth-order dendrites were regularly labelled over long (30 cm or more) transport distances: axons were also labelled over this whole distance, often allowing exact study of the initial course of particular axons. Controls in both cat and rat showed that the uptake of HRP under these circumstances occurred almost wholly from the region of axonal damage at the site of implant which can be characterized histologically.

    Notes: Abstract Treatment of cats with acrylamide, either 7.5 or 15 mg/kg IM, once a day for 10 days, resulted in increases of 31 and 47% in the phospholipid content of sciatic nerve, respectively, from a control level of 41.1±2.7 mg/kg wet weight. Determination of the distribution of individual phospholipids indicated no significant differences between control cats and those receiving a cumulative dose of 150 mg/kg acrylamide. In a separate experiment, cats were treated with the 150 mg/kg dose of acrylamide and the sciatic nerve was divided into proximal and distal portions at the level of the triceps surae nerve. Significant increases in phospholipid content were observed in both the proximal and distal portions of peripheral nerve of the acrylamide-intoxicated cats. This effect was present even when the phospholipid content was expressed in terms of total protein, dry weight or total lipid. Total weight of nerve segments, however, was significantly decreased in the neuropathic animals. The data are consistent with a focal degeneration of axons with relative sparing of phospholipids.

    Notes: Abstract The responses of neurons in area 17 were tested as a function of various stimulus parameters. The thresholds of individual cortical neurons were at contrasts between 0.01 and 0.1 (increment of 0.5×10−1 cd/m−2 on a background of 3 cd/m−2), the dynamic ranges were 1.0–2.0 log units of increment, and all cells showed a response decrease at increments above a certain maximum (supersaturation response). The averaged contrast/response curve for all neurons was S-shaped in the logarithmic plot, had a dynamic range of 2.5 log units, reached its maximum at a contrast of 0.75 and supersaturated above this level. The contrast/ sensitivity curves changed their slope under different stimulus conditions. They became flatter when the non-dominant eye was stimuated as compared to dominant eye stimulation or when the stimulation was done at a non-optimal orientation or direction, and they became steeper when both eyes were stimulated. But the maximum was reached at the same contrast and supersaturation was seen above maximum contrast no matter whether a cell was stronlgy (e.g. binocular stimulation at optimal orientation) or weakly excited (non-dominant or non-optimal orientation stimulation). After normalization, the averaged population contrast/response curves were virtually identical at all stimulus conditions. It was concluded, that range as well as maximum and supersaturation of cortical contrast/response curves are determined before the input reaches the cortex, and that the cortical cells summate, essentially, linearly. The findings furthermore demonstrate that the supersaturation of the cortical input must be due to subtractive inhibition, and that the same is true for the orientation sensitive inhibition in the cortex itself. Both, the peripheral contrast and the cortical orientation dependant inhibition cannot be explained by multiplicative inhibition. The fact, that the responses of neurons depend on many variables relativates their significance for feature representation.

    Notes: Summary Endings of four β skeletofusimotor axons in a spindle of the cat tenuissimus muscle were examined in semithin (1-μm thick) and ultrathin transverse serial sections. Two (dynamic) β axons terminated on the nuclear bag1 intrafusal muscle fiber and on extrafusal fibers of the dark type. Two (static) β axons terminated on the nuclear chain intrafusal fibers and extrafusal fibers of the intermediate type. The degree of indentation of axon terminals into the muscle surface, thickness of the sole plate and extent of folding of subjunctional membranes differed among intrafusal and extrafusal terminations of the same axon. Endings of β axons on the bag1 and chain fibers were also morphologically dissimilar. Motor axons may not determine ending morphology. Rather the form and structure of a β bag1 or chain ending may be determined by the type of intrafusal fiber on which the ending lies and the ending's distance from the primary sensory axon.

Pertanto, quei campi recettivi che non presentano proprietà ben definite o solo intermedie a quelle delle cellule semplici e complesse da alcuni autori vengono considerati semplici e da altri complessi. Queste incertezze classificatorie dipendono dal fatto che non esiste un unico schema di classificazione dei neuroni corticali visivi, poiché i due schemi attualmente più seguiti, quello di Hubel e Wiesel e quello di Bishop, vengono considerati non comparabili essendo il primo uno schema qualitativo basato sull'uso di stimoli luminosi stazionari ed il seconda uno schema quantitativo basato sull'uso di stimoli luminosi in movimento. Campi recettivi che non posseggono le proprietà tipiche delle cellule semplici e complesse sono stati osservati nel gatto oltre che nell'area 17 anche nell'area 18. I vari campi recettivi registrati in quest'ultima area sono stati analizzati sia qualitativamente che quantitativamente usando i criteri di classificazione dei due schemi attualmente esistenti. È stato osservato che, almeno per quanto riguarda le cellule semplici, tali schemi di classificazione dei neuroni corticali visivi non sono antitetici ma equivalenti.
    Notes: Abstract There is in vision research a general unwillingness to classify or define visual cortical cell types, particularly new cell types, outside the classical simple/ complex dichotomy. Cells lacking clear-cut characteristics are, therefore, considered simple by some authors and complex by others. The present unsatisfactory state has largely arisen because of the absence of any rigorous, generally accepted, classification scheme of visual cortical neurons. Actually the present two classification schemes of visual cortical neurons, that is the Hubel and Wiesel and the Bishop schemes, are generally considered to be not comparable since the former is based on the cell qualitative static-field properties as revealed by hand-held stationary flashing stimuli, whereas the latter is based on the cell quantitative dynamic-field plotting properties as revealed by moving light stimuli. Since receptive fields lacking clear-cut characteristics of simple and complex cells have been observed in area 18 of the cat as well, all the receptive field types of this area have been classified either qualitatively or quantitatively using both the Hubel and Wiesel and the Bishop classifying procedures. It has been observed, at least as far as simple cells are concerned, that the two schemes are not antithetic but, on the contrary, equivalent if averaging procedures are taken into consideration.

    Notes: Summary The spontaneous activity of primary vestibular neurons was studied during postnatal development in the cat. Activities were categorized as regular, intermediate and irregular on the basis of the coefficient of variation. At birth, few regularly firing units were found while the percentage of intermediate and irregular units was high. During development, the percentage of units meeting the criterion of regularity increased steadily with age. At the same time the number of intermediate and irregular units decreased. The average resting rate of all categories of unit showed an increase in firing from birth up to the adult stage, i. e., around the second postnatal month. The mean firing rate of regularly firing units was always higher than the two other categories throughout all the stages of development. These results were compared with similar work performed in the rat.

    Notes: Summary The unmyelinated terminal regions of extensor muscle Ia afferent fibres were stimulated electrically near lumbar motoneurones in anaesthetised cats using 300 μs pulses of less than 1 μA passed through the central NaCl barrel of seven barrel micropipettes. Such terminations were identified by anodal blocking factors of less than four and the latency of the antidromic impulse recorded in the appropriate peripheral muscle nerve. Although the effects of microelectrophoretically administered GABA were occasionally complex, the most consistent finding was a reduction in termination threshold followed by an increase. Both this reduction in threshold by GABA, and that produced by tetanic stimulation of low threshold flexor afferents (PAD) were diminished by microelectrophoretic bicuculline methochloride. This GABA antagonist alone elevated the threshold of some terminations but did not reduce the depolarizing action of either potassium or L-glutamate. Furthermore, since reductions in threshold by GABA, but not by either potassium or L-glutamate, were associated with a decrease in PAD, GABA appears to increase terminal membrane conductance. Since neither GABA nor bicuculline methochloride influenced the threshold or afferent depolarization of non-terminal regions of Ia fibres, these results are consistent with the function of GABA as a depolarizing transmitter at gabergic axoaxonic synapses upon the terminals of Ia afferent fibres synapsing with motoneurones.

    Notes: Summary Cells in the cat superior colliculus which project to the ventral and dorsal lateral geniculate nuclei (VLG and DLG) have been labeled by retro-grade transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). We studied the depth, area, and morphology of each labeled neuron quantitatively. Our measurements show that the projection neurons to both VLG and DLG vary in laminar position, size, and morphology. Labeled cells projecting to both nuclei were concentrated within the superficial gray layer, but were also scattered through the optic layer and, after DLG injections, in the intermediate gray layer as well. Labeled cells in both groups varied greatly in size, ranging from 49–344 μm2 cross-sectional area (mean 143 μm2) for the VLG group and from 31–398 μm2 (mean 165 μm2) for the DLG group. The labeled cells also varied in morphology after both VLG and DLG injections. The majority had a granule or vertical fusiform morphology. There were fewer with a stellate morphology and almost none with a horizontal morphology. At least three types of superior colliculus cells thus appear to project to the ventral and dorsal lateral geniculate nuclei. These cell types likely give rise to distinct functional channels to these nuclei.

    Notes: Summary Spino-olivary projections from segments C1 and C2 were examined in 17 cats using autoradiographic methods and in nine cats using the method of retrograde horseradish peroxidase (HRP) transport. Injections of 3H-leucine at the junction of the C1–C2 segments produced anterograde terminal labelling in two regions of the contralateral inferior olive, one in the rostromedial half of the dorsal accessory olive (DAO), the other in the caudal half of the medial accessory olive (MAO). Projections to the rostromedial DAO were best demonstrated when tracer labelled the ventromedial part of the dorsal horn, while projections to the caudal MAO were strongly labelled by injections in both the lateral and medial parts of the intermediate grey matter. Injections of HRP into the region of the inferior olive led to retrograde marking of cells in both regions of the contralateral spinal cord implicated by autoradiographic studies to have spino-olivary projections. Dense groupings of small rounded or fusiform cells were labelled contralaterally on the medial aspect of the dorsal horn in C1 and C2, while medium-sized multipolar cells were more sparsely distributed throughout intermediate laminae of C1-C5. Olivary projections from dorsal column nuclei were also examined and compared to those of spinoolivary projections. Injections of 3H-leucine into n. gracilis and cuneatus led to terminal labelling in three olivary regions, including the rostral DAO, the caudo-lateral DAO and the caudal MAO. Projections from the DCN to the rostral DAO and the caudal MAO overlapped with regions of projection from upper cervical segments although the territories occupied by DCN and upper cervical projections were not identical. Amino acid injections which were confined to n. cuneatus gave rise to terminal labelling in only the rostromedial DAO.

    Notes: Summary After injections of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) into various parts of the superior colliculus (SC) in 14 cats, retrogradely labeled neurons were found in parts of all deep cerebellar nuclei. The present study demonstrated that there are three main origins of the cerebellotectal projections in regard to the locations of the cell bodies: (1) the caudal half approximately of the fastigial nucleus (NM) including the subnucleus medialis parvocellularis (SMP), (2) the ventral and lateral parts of the posterior interpositus nucleus (NIP), and (3) the ventral part of the dentate nucleus (NL) including the subnucleus lateralis parvocellularis (SLP). The pathways and terminations of these projections have also been shown autoradiographically. Thus, fibers from NM crossed within the cerebellum and terminated in the intermediate and deep gray layers of the bilateral SC. Fibers from NIP and NL passed within the superior cerebellar peduncle, which crossed in the tegmentum (“decussation” of the peduncle) and ended in the two layers of the contralateral SC. In addition, some cerebellofugal fibers were found to terminate in the nuclei interstitialis of Cajal and Darkschewitsch, as well as in parts of pretectum and thalamus. The tecto-ponto- (and olivo-) cerebellotectal loop (cf. Kawamura 1980) has been established morphologically and it is briefly commented on in correlation with the propagation of the teleceptive (optic and acoustic) impulses.

    Notes: Summary The aim of this study was to determine the differences between the monocular and binocular segments of the visual cortex in three cats by means of stereological procedures. The cytoarchitectonic images of both segments are described. The thickness of layers in both segments are slightly different. The following results have been obtained. 1. The nerve and glial cell densities are significantly smaller in the monocular segment than in the binocular one. 2. The mean projection area of the neurons is significantly (p〈0.1%) larger in the monocular segment than in the binocular one. Consequently, the mean perikaryon volume in the monocular segment amounts to about one and a half of that in the binocular segment. 3. A two-way variance analysis of neuronal densities and perikaryon sizes shows a significant difference (p〈0.1%) between both segments. 4. The perikaryon volume fraction of the monocular segment is slightly larger than that of the binocular one. 5. The perikaryon size distributions of both segments are different. The shape of the size distributions within the layers vary in both segments. The results are in accordance with the Y-X-W-classification of nerve cells in the visual system. Semi-automatic sterological procedures are capable of detecting distinct functional areas in the brain which are difficult to distinguish visually.

    Notes: Summary The uptake of tritiated γ-aminobutyric acid (3H-GABA) in the oculomotor nucleus of the cat was studied, using light and electron microscopic examination of radioautograms after intracerebral in vivo administration of the amino-acid. A glial uptake by oligodendrocytes was seen together with a neuronal uptake of the tracer in a certain type of axon terminals found in synaptic contact with both dendrites and soma, some of them exhibiting all the ultrastructural features of motoneurons. Previous neurochemical, electrophysiological and immunocytochemical studies indicate that GABA might well be the inhibitory neurotransmitter in the vestibuloocular reflex arc. The present results show that a morphological substrate exists for the presumed postsynaptic GABAergic inhibition of ocular motoneurons, at least in the oculomotor nucleus of the cat.

    Notes: Summary Behavioral and neuroanatomical consequences of a thiamine-deficient diet, combined with the application of a thiamine-antagonist (pyrithiamine) were investigated in the cat. Eight cats (the experimental group) were subjected to a vitamine-B1-poor diet until they developed neurological symptoms (epileptic attacks, ataxia, gait disturbances), while 24 cats were fed normally and served as control group. Immediately following the appearance of neurological signs, a high dose of thiamine was given to the cats of the experimental group; they were then allowed to recover for ten days. Thereafter the performance in learning an alternation task in a T-maze was tested and compared with that of the control group. Behaviorally, the cats of the experimental group manifested drastically retarded acquisition rates in the learning task compared to the cats of the control group. Neuroanatomically, damage was found in the brains of each of the cats in the experimental group; this damage consisted mainly of enlarged ventricles, hemorrhages, neuronal loss and gliosis. Those regions most consistently affected were the periaqueductal gray, the inferior colliculi and the mamillary nuclei. The thalamic mediodorsal nucleus was affected to a minor degree in three cats only. Four cats manifested damage in the hippocampal formation. No damage was found in the cerebellum. Most of the damaged neuroanatomical loci resemble those found in patients with a Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome.

    Notes: Summary We recorded from single cells in the cat's visual cortex to quantitatively evaluate (1) the reliability of subjective assessments of ocular dominance (101 cells) and (2) the stability of ocular dominance over time (25 cells). We found that the correlation between subjective and objective measures of this variable was poorer than expected, and was worst for cells with low overall response strengths. This result appears to reflect variability in the subjective assessment procedure. For the second part of the study, we recorded from single cortical cells of 5-week-old kittens, and made repeated objective measurements of ocular dominance over time. Twenty-four of the twenty-five cells examined were quite stable in ocular dominance for periods so long as 8 h. One unit was encountered which showed substantial progressive shifts in ocular dominance over time.

    Notes: Summary Single unit activity of 842 cells has been recorded in cat visual cortex and analyzed with respect to vestibular induced, and spontaneous saccadic eye movements performed in the dark. This study has been done in awake, chronically implanted cats, subsequently placed in “acute” conditions to achieve the precise retinotopic mapping of the cortical areas previously investigated. In areas 17 and 18, respectively, 27% and 24% of the cells tested were influenced by horizontal saccadic eye movements in the dark (E. M. cells). In the Clare-Bishop area, the proportion of E. M. cells was 12%, while only 2% of such cells were found in areas 19 and 21. The distribution of E.M. cells in areas 17 and 18 with respect to retinotopy showed that E.M. cells were more numerous in the cortical zones devoted to the representation of the area centralis (38% in area 17, 27% in area 18) than in the zones subserving the periphery of the visual field (17% and 12%, respectively). Two of the characteristics of E. M. cell activations appear dependant on the retinotopic organization. First, a larger number of E.M. cells presenting an asymmetry in their responses to horizontal saccadic eye movements in opposite directions (directional E.M. cells) were encountered in the cortical representation of the peripheral visual field. 53% of E. M. cells recorded in area 17 and 71% in area 18 were directional in the cortex corresponding to the peripheral visual field. This percentage was of 23% and 25% respectively in the cortex devoted to area centralis. Second, E.M. cells were found to have a latency from the onset of the saccade systematically larger than 100 ms (i.e, they discharged at, or after the end of the eye movement) if they were located in the cortical representation of the area centralis, while E.M. cells related to the peripheral visual field displayed a wider range of latencies (0–240 ms). Results obtained in Clare Bishop area, although limited to the representation of the peripheral visual field, were quantitatively and qualitatively similar to those observed in the homologous retinotopic zones of areas 17 and 18. It is concluded that an extra-retinal input related to oculomotor activity is sent to the cat visual cortex and is organized, at least in areas 17 and 18, with respect to the retinotopic representation of the visual field. These data support the hypothesis of a functional duality between central and peripheral vision and are discussed in the context of visual-oculomotor integration.

    Notes: Summary The effects of mechanical stimulation (tap) on single unit activity of Deiter's neurons were analysed in walking cats decerebrated at the premammillary level. Deiters' neurons projecting to the ipsilateral cervical, but not to the lumbosacral, spinal cord (C-Deiters' neurons) were identified by antidromic activation, cerebellar stimulation, and localization of the neurons. During each unperturbed cycle of quadrupedal locomotion, most C-Deiters' neurons showed two frequency modulation peaks in their impulse discharges: one (A peak) in the late swing (E1) or the early stance (E2) phase, the other (B peak) in the late stance (E3) or the early swing (F) phase, of the ipsilateral forelimb. The A peak started to rise shortly before the ipsilateral forelimb was placed. When mechanical perturbation was applied during locomotion to the paw dorsum of the left forelimb (LF) in its stance phase, the ongoing LF stance phase shortened and the simultaneous swing phase of the right forelimb (RF) shortened. Accordingly, in the RF, extensor activity in the swing phase to place down the limb occurred earlier than in unperturbed step cycles. The same LF tap induced a marked enhancement of impulse discharges in C-Deiters' neurons on the right side (with a magnitude of 20–100 imp/s, and the shortest latency of 25 ms). This enhancement was more pronounced than that induced when the perturbation was applied to the LF during its swing phase. The latency manifested a close time relation to the RF extensor activity supporting the postulate that the increased C-Deiters' activity in the RF swing phase contributes to the earlier onset of RF extensor activity which plays an important role in maintaining alternating footfalls after perturbation.

    Notes: Summary Electrical activation of the ipsilateral arcuate region of the hypothalamus produced an inhibitory influence upon three separate subpopulations of cells encountered in the ventrolateral PAG. Quiescent PAG cells were classified by their response pattern to sural nerve stimulation: Type A cells displayed only a short latency discharge; whereas, Type B cells exhibited a triphasic response pattern. Arcuate nucleus stimulation dramatically reduced the evoked discharge of both A and B cell types. Type C cells represented spontaneously active PAG neurons which were less affected by arcuate nucleus activation. Systemic naloxone (5 mg/kg) reduced the degree of inhibition of only Type B neurons. Naloxone was ineffective in attenuating arcuate inhibition of Type A and C neurons. Type B neurons may represent a class of cells which are more involved in nociceptive systems and therefore are susceptible to modulation by endogenous opiate peptides.

In areas 17 and 18 the activity of respectively 14% and 11% of units was modified by vestibular stimulation. Both non-specific and specific influences were observed. Specific influences (42% in area 17 and 33% in area 18) were similar to the types of responses recorded in the vestibular nuclei, and were encountered more frequently within the cortex subserving the peripheral visual field. Our results could provide a neurophysiological basis for some psychophysiological observations concerning visuo-vestibular interactions.

    Notes: Summary The afferent projections to, and the interconnections between, four structures of the socalled limbic system were investigated in the cat. The retrograde horseradish peroxidase (HRP) technique was used to trace the origins of fibers projecting to each of these four loci. Particular emphasis was laid on tracing cortical afferents of these regions. Four injections were performed in the dorsal and two in the ventral subicular regions; six were centered within the mamillary nuclei, four within the anterior thalamic nuclei, and three within the cingulate gyrus. For each region, a number of projections were found which had apparently not been described before, at least not for the cat: For injections into the subicular regions, a hitherto unknown number of cortical afferents was detected, including labeled cells in the prefrontal and premotor fields and from large areas within the posterior parietal, temporal and occipital cortex (i.e., sensory and sensory integration cortex); numerous neurons were labeled in the anterior nuclear group of the thalamus. Injections of HRP into the mamillary nuclei revealed, aside from a strong projection from the subicular regions, frontocortical and cingulate projections to the mamillary nuclei; the mamillary nuclei also received subcortical projections from the septum, the diagonal band of Broca and from the periaqueductal gray. Following injections into the anterior thalamic nuclei, labeled cells were found in the prefrontal cortex, and to a lesser extent in lateral parts of the cortical hemisphere; subcortically, the mamillary nuclei received connections from hypothalamic areas, the periaqueductal gray, the diagonal band of Broca and the claustrum. Cingulate injections labeled cells in temporal and parietal cortical areas, in the subicular region, and also in the periaqueductal gray. Our findings reveal that each of the four injected areas receives a large number of afferents from divergent regions of the brain; of these, a considerable number is shared by each of the four injection loci. Furthermore, the present results reveal that the subiculum, the mamillary bodies, and the anterior thalamus are more strongly interconnected than previously assumed.

    Notes: Summary In five, dark-reared, 4-week-old kittens the posterior two thirds of the corpus callosum were split, and a lesion comprising the intralaminar nuclei was made of the left medial thalamic complex. In addition, the right eye was closed by suture. Postoperatively, the kittens showed abnormal orienting responses, neglecting visual stimuli presented in the hemifield contralateral to the side of the lesion. Sudden changes in light, sound, or somatosensory stimulation elicited orienting responses that all tended toward the side of the lesion. These massive symptoms faded within a few weeks but the kittens continued to neglect visual stimuli in the hemifield contralateral to the lesion when a second stimulus was presented simultaneously in the other hemifield. Electrophysiologic analysis of the visual cortex, performed after the end of the critical period, revealed marked interhemispheric differences. In the visual cortex of the normal hemisphere most neurons were monocular and responded exclusively to stimulation of the open eye, but otherwise had normal receptive field properties. In the visual cortex of the hemisphere containing the thalamic lesion, the majority of the neurons remained binocular. In addition, the selectivity for stimulus orientation and the vigor of responses to optimally aligned stimuli were subnormal on this side. Thus, the same retinal signals, which in the control hemisphere suppressed the pathways from the deprived eye and supported the development of normal receptive fields, failed to do either in the hemisphere containing the thalamic lesion. Apparently, experience-dependent changes in the visual cortex require both retinal stimulation and the functioning of diencephalic structures which modulate cortical excitability and control selective attention.

    Notes: Summary We examined the characteristics of postsynaptic potentials (PSPs) produced in antidromically-identified medial gastrocnemius (MG) α-motoneurons by electrical stimulation of low threshold (〈 3×T) distal limb cutaneous afferents in the sural (SUR) nerve in adult cats anesthetized with α-chloralose, together with the effects on SUR PSPs of supraspinal conditioning stimulation of the contralateral red nucleus (RN) and pyramidal tract (PT). In the majority of MG motoneurons, SUR afferents with electrical thresholds 〈 1.5×T produced early excitatory synaptic potentials (EPSPs) with minimum central latency of about 2.0 ms, suggesting activation of a trisynaptic segmental pathway with two interposed interneurons. Such early EPSPs were often detectable with stimuli 〈 1.2×T, as determined by recording the compound action potential in the sciatic nerve and from the first appearance of the N1 wave of the cord dorsum potential. Inhibitory synaptic potentials (IPSPs) were regularly produced by SUR volleys of only slightly greater strength (often as low as 1.3×T) and these had minimum central latencies of about 3.0 ms (about 1.0 ms longer than the earliest EPSPs), suggesting a three interneuron central pathway. Repetitive stimulation of RN and PT regularly produced facilitation of both EPSP and IPSP components in the SUR response, suggesting that these supraspinal systems directly or indirectly excite some of the same interneurons that convey the SUR effects to MG motoneurons. When using very low strength SUR stimuli, PT conditioning produced relatively pure facilitation of the SUR EPSPs but with larger SUR volleys, PT clearly facilitated both EPSPs and IPSPs. RN conditioning produced more parallel facilitation of SUR EPSPs and IPSPs. Supraspinal control of the polysynaptic pathway producing SUR EPSPs is of particular interest because of earlier evidence that this pathway is differentially distributed to motoneurons of fast twitch versus slow twitch MG motor units.

    Notes: Summary Electromyographic (EMG) activity associated with rapid voluntary limb movements exhibits a characteristic “three burst pattern”. The first burst is in the agonist muscle (AG1), the second is in the antagonist (ANT) and the third is again in the agonist (AG2). The present study was undertaken to determine whether ANT and AG2 reflect preprogrammed commands or responses to stretch consequent upon limb displacement. To answer this question EMG activity of agonist and antagonist muscles was examined in cats performing a tracking task. To dissociate centrally programmed muscular events from their intended mechanical consequences, isometric and anisometric conditions were presented in either a predictable or unpredictable sequence. A torque motor was used to control limb trajectory and to impose passive angular displacements. Whereas AG1 was present under both isometric and anisometric conditions, ANT and AG2 required limb displacement and were time locked to movement parameters. ANT occurred within 15 ms following the onset of acceleration. Its magnitude varied linearly with this parameter and inversely with AG1. Passive displacements stretching the antagonist elicited responses with similar latencies and greatest magnitude for a given acceleration. AG2 was only present in underdamped movements with terminal oscillations and typically occurred when the position reached its peak and the velocity recrossed zero. Its magnitude was a function of both limb deceleration and of intended force. The data indicate that both ANT and AG2 represent responses to muscles stretch whose amplitudes are modulated by descending commands. Reciprocal mechanisms operating at a spinal level could account for the reduction of the antagonist response as a function of intended force. The increased sensitivity of late stretch responses in the agonist with higher intended forces is compatible with motoneuron facilitation by tonic descending commands. It is proposed that the stretch evoked responses function to dampen terminal oscillations which ensue from rapid displacement of the mass of the limb against elastic forces of muscle and soft tissue.

    Notes: Summary The convergence and interaction of horizontal semicircular canal and neck proprioceptive inputs were studied in neurons of the caudal two thirds of the vestibular nuclear complex. Extracellular neuron activity was recorded under muscle relaxation and slight anesthesia in chronically prepared cats. The following stimulations were applied: horizontal rotations of (a) the whole body (labyrinth stimulation), (b) the trunk vs. the stationary head (neck stimulation), and (c) the head vs. the stationary trunk (combined labyrinth and neck stimulation). Of 152 neurons investigated, 83 (55%) showed convergence of the two inputs. In about half of these neurons, the neck input was very weak and hardly affected the labyrinthine response during head rotation. Judged from the response pattern, several of these neurons presumably were related to vestibulo-oculomotor function (i.e., vestibular nystagmus). In the other half (i.e., 27% of all neurons), sensitivity of the two inputs was similar. Both labyrinthine and neck responses contained a dynamic (“velocity”) component; neck responses of more than half of these neurons had, in addition, a static (“position”) component. The dynamic components were either “antagonistic” or “synergistic” as to their convergence during head rotation. When applying this combined stimulation, the dynamic components summed linearly, yielding subtraction in case of antagonistic convergence and addition in case of synergistic convergence. In contrast, the static components of the neck responses remained largely unchanged during head rotation. However, the static head-to-trunk deflection determined the tonic discharge level in such neurons and thus facilitated or disfacilitated the dynamic responses to superimposed labyrinth stimulation. We suggest that the two patterns of labyrinthine-neck interaction observed in vestibular nuclear neurons, i.e., subtraction and addition, may be involved in the postural control of the trunk and head, respectively. In contrast, interference of the neck input with vestibule-oculomotor function appears to be almost negligible in the intact cat.

    Notes: Summary Direct projections from visual areas 17, 18, 19, and lateral suprasylvian visual area (LS) to the striatum were searched for in 12 adult cats using the autoradiographic technique to detect neuronal pathways. Striatal labels were found only after injections in areas 19 and LS. Projections homolateral to the injection sites were observed from both areas to the head and body of the caudate nucleus and to the putamen. Contralateral projections were found from both areas 19 and LS: however, area 19 did not project to the contralateral putamen. The extent of contralateral projections was smaller and they were confined within the same regions as the homolateral ones. Silver grains were often arranged in cluster-like patches, which were more evident ipsilaterally, in the head of the caudate nucleus and after injections in area LS. The present data support the view of a not strictly topographical segregation of striatal projections from the cat visual cortex.

    Notes: Summary The thalamic projections to the cortical area surrounding the anterior (ASs) and middle (MSs) suprasylvian sulci in the cat were studied using horseradish peroxidase histochemistry. The medial MSs area (medial wall of the MSs) receives thalamic afferents from the pulvinar-lateralis posterior (Pul-LP) complex, posterior nucleus (Pn) and medial interlaminar nucleus (MIN) and C laminae of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (GLd). Groups of labeled cells in the Pul-LP complex are arranged to form four different neuronal bands oriented dorsoventrally. The four neuronal bands are located, laterally to medially, in the lateral and medial parts of Pul and in the lateral and central parts of LP. The ventral ends of the first (in the lateral Pul) and the third (in the lateral LP) bands extend to MIN and Pn, respectively. The locations of the four bands in the Pul-LP complex appear to correspond to the terminal fields of afferents from four different regions (retina, pretectum, visual cortex and superior colliculus) related to visual function. The anterior part of the lateral MSs area (lateral wall of the MSs) receives thalamic fibers from the lateral and intermediate divisions of the posterior nuclear group (POl and POi), while its posterior part receives fibers from the dorsal and medial parts of LP and POi. Both walls of the ASs receive fibers from the ventrolateral part of LP as well as from the anterior part of POl and the POl-POm border. In addition, the ASs-MSs area receives fibers from the central lateral nucleus (CL) It is of interest to correlate the locations of cells projecting to the ASs-MSs area with the pathways terminating in thalamic regions. It is clear that, from the hodological point of view, the ASs-MSs area is functionally segregated, which is in agreement with previous studies we have made of corticocortical connections.

Throughout the conditioning period, the ocular dominance of neurons in the visual cortex was determined from evoked potentials that were elicited either with electric stimulation of the optic nerves or with phase reversing gratings of variable spatial frequencies. In two kittens, ocular dominance changes were assessed after the end of the conditioning period by analyzing single unit receptive fields. Monocular stimulation with patterned light induced a marked shift of ocular dominance toward the stimulated eye, when the light stimulus was paired with electric activation of either the mesencephalic reticular formation or of the medial thalamus. Moreover, a substantial fraction of cells acquired mature receptive fields. No such changes occurred with light or electric stimulation alone. It is concluded that central core projections which modulate cortical excitability gate experience-dependent modifications of connections in the kitten visual cortex.

    Notes: Summary Contralateral corticofugal projections were investigated following multiple injections of a mixture of tritiated leucine and proline into the lateral, postlateral, suprasylvian and ectosylvian gyri of adult cats. Transported label was found in several Contralateral subcortical regions. These included the claustrum, caudate-putamen, thalamic intralaminar nuclei, pretectum, and the superior and inferior colliculi. These results show that the crossed corticofugal projections are common in the cat and are more extensive than has been previously reported.

    Notes: Summary Motor units of the cat peroneus tertius muscle were systematically analyzed using the criteria established by Burke et al. (1973). On the basis of their speed of contraction and resistance to fatigue, 121 (97%) of 125 motor units examined in ten adult cats could be classified as belonging to one of four types: fast-fatiguable (FF), fast-resistant (FR), fast-intermediate (FI), and slow-resistant (S). Peroneus tertius was found to contain 30% FF motor units, 9% FI units, 39% FR units, and 22% S units. Contraction times of fast motor units (FF, FR, and FI) ranged from 15 to 27 ms and those of S units from 26 to 42 ms. The mean tetanic tensions were 37 g for FF units, 29 g for FI units, 7.5 g for FR units, and 1.1 g for S units. Fast motor units displayed considerable post-tetanic potentiation of twitch tension. Under similar conditions of stimulation, FF units appeared able to potentiate more and faster than FR units.

    Notes: Summary On the postlateral gyrus of the cat striate cortex the cells' preferred orientation was measured as a function of cortical depth in penetrations as parallel as possible to the radial fibre bundles. According to the penetration angle and in agreement with the current model of orientation columns, there was a low orientation drift in layers 2–4. At the transition between layers 4 and 5 an orientation shift of 45–90 deg was found in most penetrations. The orientation differences between adjacent recording sites in lower layers was normally low too, but clearly higher than in upper layers. The results are discussed in terms of more independent orientation mechanisms in upper and lower layers.

    Notes: Summary To understand why some cells in the visual cortex respond to high stimulus velocities while others fail to do so, a sample of 71 of such cells were examined for their responses to stationary presented stimuli as well as to moving edges or slits of different widths. When presented with stationary stimuli it was found that cells which respond best to slowly moving stimuli generally have tonic discharges, long time to peak latencies and often long minimal durations of stimulation. In contrast, cells which respond preferentially to fast stimuli have phasic discharges, short latencies and short critical durations of stimulation when presented with stationary flashed slits. In the latter type of cells the responses to very fast stimulus movement were abolished selectively when contrast and width of the stimulus were not optimal. A few cells exhitited a velocity-response (VR) curve with a central dip indicating good responsiveness to either slow or fast movement but little to medium velocities. These cells responded both phasically and tonically to stationary slits and the latency of the tonic and phasic responses corresponded well to the latency of the responses at low and high velocities, respectively. It is suggested that the ability of phasic cells to respond to high velocities is linked to their limited need for temporal summation.

    Notes: Summary Descending projections from the mesencephalon and superior colliculus to the inferior olive were analyzed by an autoradiographic tracing method. Injections of tritium-labelled leucine were placed in regions which had previously been identified as sources of afferents to the olive. These were located adjacent to the central gray and extended from the rostral red nucleus to the posterior thalamus. Additional injections were made in the superior colliculus. Other injections were placed in the basal ganglia and thalamus. Injections restricted to one side of the central mesencephalon resulted in predominantly ipsilateral labelling of the olive. After injections in the caudo-medial parafascicular and subparafascicular nuclei and rostral nucleus of Darkschewitsch, deposits of grains were observed in the rostral pole of the medial accessory olive and adjacent ventral lamella of the principal olive. The medial accessory olive contained grains into its middle third. More caudal injections which involved the interstitial nucleus of Cajal as well as the nucleus of Darkschewitsch and rostral red nucleus resulted in the dense labelling of the entire principal olive (except the dorsal cap), the entire medial acessory olive (except subnucleus β and the caudo-medial pole) and the caudo-dorsal accessory olive. Injections centered in the caudal magnocellular red nucleus and extending into the rostral parvocellular division labelled the dorsal lamella of the principal olive almost exclusively. When only the caudal part of the red nucleus was involved in the injection, the olive was entirely clear of grains. Minor contralateral distributions were observed in the dorsomedial cell column, the medial tip of the dorsal lamella and in the caudal medial accessory olive. The deep layers of the superior colliculus were found to project strongly to the contralateral medial accessory olive immediately beside subnucleus β and weakly to the same area ipsilaterally. Four pathways were identified as contributing fibers to the olivary projections. These were the medial longitudinal fasciculus, the medial tegmental tract, the central tegmental tract and tectospinal or tectobulbar fibers. The rubrospinal tract did not contribute projections to the olive. Injections in the caudate nucleus, entopeduncular nucleus and ventral anterior and ventral lateral thalamic nuclei, did not result in any labeling in the olive.

    Notes: Summary The course and termination of afferents in the spinal dorsolateral fascicle to some medullary sensory nuclei were studied by tracing degeneration following lesions of spinal white matter. The main conclusions depend on successive degeneration experiments; other points were studied with single-stage lesions. The dorsal column nuclei were particu-larly studied; terminations in these nuclei following dorsolateral lesions followed a clear-cut pattern, with fibres arising from segments below T 6 terminating in the gracile nucleus and those with more rostral origin solely in the cuneate nucleus. In both nuclei, the major terminations were in their rostral third with most fibres traversing deep caudal regions where some termination also occurred. Some fibres ended contralaterally. These restricted regions of termination contrasted with the wide-spread terminations seen after lesions of the dorsal column. A region at the cuneate rostral pole, adjacent to but clearly separable from nucleus z, receives a dense projection from both caudal and rostral spinal levels, the former fibres terminating in the dorsal part of the region, the latter extending more ventrally. We treat this as a separate subnucleus. The afferents to the dorsal column nuclei (together with those terminating in the other nuclei studied) were confined to the extreme dorsolateral white matter. Our observations confirm the established view that only afferents arising from caudal segments (below at least T 4–5) terminate in nucleus z, and that afferents terminating in group x arise from all levels (at least between C 5 and L 5): also that neither receives any afferents through the dorsal columns. Dorsolateral fibres arising from segments above at least T 6 terminate in a clear-cut area at the lateral border of the external cuneate nucleus. Heavy terminal degeneration was also seen in the lateral cervical nucleus of afferents arising from both above and below T4–5

    Notes: Summary Vagal reflex bradycardia was induced in anaesthetized cats with high level spinal axotomy by electrical stimulation of either the carotid sinus nerves or a depressor nerve. In both preparations reflex bradycardia increased with the rate of stimulation. Injection of 1 μg/kg clonidine into a lateral cerebral ventricle augmented reflex bradycardia in response to carotid sinus nerve stimulation while the same dose of clonidine was ineffective when given intravenously. The antagonistic effect of intracerebroventricular yohimbine (50 μg/kg) indicated that the effect of clonidine was due to its α1agonistic action. In contrast to carotid nerve stimulation the reflex bradycardia in response to depressor nerve stimulation was affected neither by intracerebroventricular injection of clonidine (2 μg/kg) nor by yohimbine (100 μg/kg). It is concluded that in the cat, the function of the central parts of the baroreceptor reflex which originate from the carotid sinus area is augmented by stimulation of α1adrenoceptors while the function of those parts originating from the aortic area is not.
