Notes: Self-formation concept as a generalization of the huge number of technologies inmicroelectronics was defined. Self-formation as irreversible evolution, causing self-increasing of an object complexity, is presented. Differential equation method allows description of evolution of any figures contour. Numerical model of self-formation in essence is a cellular automata of the second kind. Neither analytical nor numerical models did not involve causes of contour evolution. However causes of evolution are hidden in interactions of parameters which approximate an object and ambient materials.On the basis of above-mentioned factors, the right-dimensional topological space was created. It is the Cartesian product of the eight sets, including three Euclidean space axes, four parameter axes (defining parameters of the Euclidean points and interaction matrix) and time axis.Self-formation is a result of non-homogeneous mapping sequence in time. On the other hand non-homeomorpheous mapping indicates irreversibility of an evolution. Evolution is irreversible in time if only the object either contains the peculiar points or they arise under evolution. Therefore an interaction, defining the figure evolution out-side, does not return the object to initial state after its diversion inside and can implicate the complexity increasing.The new self-formation technologies for electron devices and integrated circuits manufacturing were carried out. Topological approach allows analysis and synthesis of real world structures, known in the areas of microelectronics, nanotechnology, photovoltaics and fuel cell technology, possibly in living world (genes, cells, organs, organism) as well. Problems remaining to be investigated are presented

Notes: Recent reports on experimental observation of optical gain in silicon nanostructures in the visible region, performed at several laboratories all over the world, have triggered an extraordinary surge of interest in silicon lasing. However, attempts aimed at reproducing the red stimulated emission from „standard“silicon nanocrystals (sized 3-5 nm) at some other laboratories either failed, or. did not come to definite conclusions. Therefore, more detailed measurements of optical gain in a wider variety of samples containing Si nanocrystals are required in order to unravel whether or not the observation of optical gain is an intrinsic property of Si nanocrystals. We have performed a detailed study of optical gain in layers of densely packed Si nanocrystals in SiO2, prepared on the basis of porous Si, using the variable-stripe-length (VSL) method in combination with the shifted-excitation-spot (SES) method. In selected samples we have observed a distinct difference in behaviour between VSL and SES curves, indicating the occurrence of positive optical gain of ~ 24 cm-1. Preliminary reports on transport and electroluminescence measurements in thin films of SiO2 doped with porous silicon grains, prepared by spin-coating technique, are also discussed

Notes: The incorporation of Si-nc in Er doped silica is known to strongly enhance the infrared luminescence of Er3+ at 1.54µm. The enhancement is believed to be due to an energy transfer process from Si-nc to Er. In this work we investigate the formation of Si nano-aggregates and their role in the energy transfer process to Er3+ ions for a multi-component glass host. These materials can offer better performances than silica in terms of Er solubility and band broadness for integratedEr-doped optical amplifiers and investigation is therefore very interesting for optoelectronic applications. Si and Er were co-implanted by choosing the implantation energies in order to optimize the overlap between the concentration profiles. The precipitation of Si and the enhancement of the 1.54 µm Er emission were studied for different post-implantation annealing temperatures. In particular the optical properties of the glass were investigated by means of photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and the results are discussed in relation to a standard silicasubstrate. These data are presented and related to the structural properties of the material. Moreover the implications on the future development of an Er doped optical amplifier are discussed

Notes: Two types of silver-doped glass were used for direct laser recording of 2D and 3Dphotonic crystals. The first contained a diffusion layer (20 microns thick) with embedded silver nanoclusters of 20-nm average radius. 2D and 3D photonic crystals of submicron lattice parameters were fabricated by nanosecond pulsed laser irradiation (l, = 355 nm) using four or five coherent intersecting beams. Under irradiation the clusters absorbing light energy are heated to high temperatures and become mobile due to the formation of liquid shells around them. Adjacent clusters move towards each other and towards the irradiated surface under local temperature gradients, form agglomerates and merge in periodically located "spots" of high light intensity in the interference field. The second type of glass, photosensitive to UV irradiation, contained in the bulk Ag+ and Ce3+ ions. Under UV irradiation excited electrons passed from Ce3+ to Ag+. The Ag atomsbecame neutral and under subsequent heat treatment of the glass at elevated temperatures have a tendency to form nanoclusters, thus “developing” the UV recorded patterns. Using nanosecond pulsed irradiation of 308 nm we have recorded 3D photonic crystals in the bulk of such glass

Notes: Yttria-doped zirconia nanopowders have been obtained using the hydrothermal procedure starting from soluble inorganic salts. The mechanisms and kinetics of the process have been studied to obtain high purity powders with a crystalline size range of 4 to 22nm and specific surface near 200 m2/g. These powders have been have been used to obtain membranes with controlled thickness and with densities over 95% of the theoretical value by employing the tape casting technique usingorganic binders, dispersants and surfactants. The influence of the additives and sintering regime on the density and microstructure of membranes has been studied. The ionic conductivity of the materials was investigated and modelled. Different types of ruthenate pastes were used to obtain thick resistive films on the zirconia membranes and interactions between the substrate and membranes were studied. Finally the gauge characteristics of the device and possibilities for applications as mechanical pressure sensors with high sensitivity are discussed

Notes: We present the results of time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) and optically detected microwave resonance (ODMR) spectroscopy investigations of semiconductor quantum dots and quantum wells. The ODMR spectra of InAs/GaAs QDs were detected via modulation of the total intensity of the QDs emission induced by 95 GHz microwave excitation and exciton fine structure was studied. Very longlife times (up to 10 ns) of photoexcited carriers were observed in this system using TRPL at low temperatures and excitation intensities promising higher responsitivity of such QDs for quantum dot infrared photodetector development. The effects of proton and alpha particles irradiation on carrier dynamics wereinvestigated on different InGaAs/GaAs, InAlAs/AlGaAs and GaAs/AlGaAs QD and QW systems. The obtained results demonstrated that carrier lifetimes in the QDs are much less affected by proton irradiation than that in QWs. A strong influence of irradiation on the PL intensity was observed in multiple QWs after high-energy alpha particles irradiation

Notes: Birefringence induced by the orientation of polymer main chains during injectionmoulding or extrusion processing restricts the application of optical polymers to optical devices that require the polarization state of incident light to be maintained. To compensate this birefringence of polymers we propose using the “birefringent crystal dopant method” - homogeneous doping with an opposite birefringent needle-like crystal. Strontium carbonate (SrCO3) was selected for this purpose and synthesized, with a length of about 200nm and a width of about 20nm. SrCO3 was doped into poly(MMA/BzMA= 78/22(wt./wt.)) film. The film was uniaxially drawn at 130°C and 4mm/min. For the first time, the positive birefringence of the drawn copolymer film at a wavelength of 633nm was compensated by doping with 0.3wt.% of SrCO3 without loss of transparency and thermostability

Notes: A TGA assisted hydrothermal process was employed to prepare chalcogenide nanorods. The different morphology of CdS nanomaterials prepared with and without the TGA assisted hydrothermal process indicates that TGA plays a critical role in controlling the nucleation and growth of CdS nanomaterials. The paper makes a preliminary presentation of the mechanisms of preparation of chalcogenide nanostructures with and without the use of the TGA assisted hydrothermal synthesis. FeS nanorods and nanoparticles have been prepared by the TGA assisted and without the TGA assisted hydrothermal process, respectively, which confirmed the proposed mechanism. X-ray diffraction (XRD) shows that the nanorods are of orthorhombic structure, and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) pattern showed that the FeS nanorods were single crystalse. Further investigation for the synthesis of other chalcogenides will be undertaken in orderto confirm the proposed mechanism

Notes: Ab initio slab simulations were performed for copper adhesion to a perfect MgO(001) surface using the DFT-LCGTF method as implemented in CRYSTAL98 computer code. In order to clarify the nature of interfacial bonding, we considered a slab model of the Cu/MgO(001) interface with regular 1/4 monolayer (ML), 1/2 ML, 1 ML and 2 ML substrate coverages and verified the results of our calculations. In particular, the dependences of the adhesion energy per Cu atom, projections of multipole moments as well as total and projected densities of states (DOS) on the substrate coverage by a metal are analyzed. Computer simulation indicated that physical adsorption makes the dominant contribution to bonding on the regular Cu/MgO(001) interface

Notes: The successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) technique was used to grow double layer structures of CdS-PbS. The growth of thin films by the SILAR technique from diluted aqueous solutions was achieved, ionic layer by ionic layer, at room temperature and normal pressure. The thin films on silicon were characterized by XRD, AFM, XPS. Notes: The goal of this study was to analyze the possibilities of fuzzy neural networks andevolutionary programming methods for creating the human skill based stock trading systems. In stock exchange markets, the relationships between market variables are generally too complex to make rightful trading decisions and to earn stabile profits using classical system theory approach. On the other hand, there are a lot of trading experts-practicians that successfully trade stocks and achieve good results in the stock exchange markets. A useful technique for expert-knowledge extraction is the supervised learning methods, where human-experts actions are mapped usingfuzzy-neural networks. In this paper we outline this procedure. Also we discuss the possibilities for improvement the proposed human skill based stock trading systems. An efficient biological system evolves slowly over the course of hundreds and housands of generations of individuals. Later generations have more fit and are more capable than earlier ones. Similarly, we have used evolutionary techniques to .evolve. the fuzzy-neural network based stock trading system, which is capable to solve the stock trading task more efficiently. Proposed procedure was tested using virtual trading system that uses historical data from US stock markets. The first results confirmed the good opportunities of the proposed approach

Notes: Considering optimization of the technology and production of Solar Cells an overall goal is to lower the production costs per Watt through optimization of the parameters of Solar Cell. The dominant material up to now for the majority of commercially produced solar cells is crystalline silicon (c-Si). A lot of efforts has been undertaken to increase the electrical efficiency of Si based solar cells above 20% [3-5]. Unfortunately, efficiency improvements are often reached only with the help of costly process steps and as result without possibility to use such improvements in industrial products. One of the trends in achieving higher efficiency in monocristalline Si based Solar Cells is introduction of complicated spatial structure on absorbing surface of SC. Reports indicates expectations of efficiencies as high as 24% in laboratory samples but with significant raise in costs for Spatial SC production (Fig. 1).It is clear that optimization of technological steps and parameters must be considered thinking about introduction of Spatial SC. Optimization in the case of Spatial SC must be provided by two steps: first of all we need to evaluate impact of spatial structure to physical properties of the SSC and in the next step evaluate technological possibilities for production of the SSC with optimized physical characteristics

Notes: Porous surface layers were studied in a series of p-type Si samples etched anodically in electrolytes based on hydrofluoric acid. The optical response of the structure consisting of substrate and surface layers was investigated by spectroscopic ellipsometry in the range 1-5 eV. The experimental results were compared with calculations, which model the optical response of a multilayer structure. The model parameters were compared to the structural data obtained by AFM and SEM studies. The experimental investigations and model calculations revealed the regularities in the dependence of the optical response on the doping degree of substrate and parameters of technological procedure

Notes: Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) coatings were synthesized using dc magnetron sputter deposition of Y/Zr layers followed by thermal treatment in the range of temperatures 600-1000 ºC at atmospheric pressure in air. The characterization of YSZ coating structure was carried out by X-ray diffraction. The secondary ion mass-spectrometry analysis was used for the recording of depth profiles of the most important elements in coatings and at interface. The conducted analysis showed that processes on the surface play a dominant role in the synthesis mechanism of YSZ coatings homogeneous in structure and composition during the thermal oxidation. The excess of surface thermodynamic potentials supports an intensive intermixing across Y/Zr layers with continuous supply of oxygen through the surface. Under highly non-equilibrium conditions on the surface, the adatoms are driven into grain boundaries of crystallites and result in high compressive stress in grains. The stress relaxation initiates the plastic flow of matrix material with incorporation of oxygen atoms. Thermally activated dislocation glide is considered as the dominant plasticdeformation mechanism in these materials

Notes: The linear and nonlinear optical properties of pure 3,3'-bis(3-carboxypropyl)-5,5',6,6'- tetrachloro-1,1'-dioctylbenzimidacarbocyanine (C〈sub〉8〈/sub〉O〈sub〉3〈/sub〉) aggregates as well as of C〈sub〉8〈/sub〉O〈sub〉3〈/sub〉 aggregates in the presence of PVA are studied at room temperature. The obtained results reveal that absorption spectra of both aggregates are governed by four absorption bands. Three of these represent transitions having dipole moments oriented parallel to the axis of the aggregate and one oriented perpendicular to it. The two lower energy parallel transitions are found to be weakly coupled which suggests that they represent two excitons located on different walls of the double-wall cylinder. In contrast, the lowest energy parallel transition and the transition having a transition dipole moment oriented perpendicular to the aggregate axis share the same ground state which reveals that they belong to the same exciton band. The manner of modification of the linear absorption with addition of PVA as well as the similarity of the pump-probe spectra of the two investigated aggregates suggests that this exciton band originates from the inner wall of the double-wall cylinder

Notes: The structural and optical properties of the gel-forming photochromic switch 1,2-bis(2’-methyl-5’-{{((R) phenylethyl)amino}carbonyl}thienyl-3’-yl)cyclopentene are studied by means of the linear absorption and holographic grating techniques. The use of diffractive optics enables recording of holographic gratings with high long-term phase stability. The diffraction efficiency of the recorded holographic gratings approach values of 30% for low writing beam energies when diffusion is the rate determining factor. At higher writing pulse energies the competition between the diffusion and photodecomposition processes causes lower diffraction efficiencies. At irradiation doses above 10 mJ the spatial profile of the recorded gratings is strongly influenced by saturation effects. Because of the well-determined grating profile the holographic grating technique is potentially applicable for the quantitative characterisation of the diffusion process in photochromic gels

Notes: An understanding of both the interactions between the adsorbate molecules and theinteractions between adsorbates and the surface is a prerequisite to eventually controlling the selfassembly process in supramolecular aggregation. Here we report the formation of supramolecular structures (J-aggregates) whose size and aggregation pattern are controlled by changing the number of polar sulfonic groups of meso-tetra (4-sulfonatophenyl) porphine. Using atomic force microscopy we show that substituted porphyrin molecules (5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl) porphine (TPPS〈sub〉4〈/sub〉), 5,10,15-tris(4-sulfonatophenyl)-20-phenyl porphine (TPPS〈sub〉3〈/sub〉), 5,15-bis(4-sulfonatophenyl)- 10,20-diphenyl porphyne (TPPS〈sub〉2op〈/sub〉) - SO〈sub〉3〈/sub〉 groups are opposite each other, and 5,20-bis(4- sulfonatophenyl)-10,15-diphenyl porphyne (TPPS2a) . SO〈sub〉3〈/sub〉 groups are adjacent each other) form different spatial structures. Our findings suggest that placement of functional groups that are participating in direct noncovalent interactions will allow design and construction of different supramolecular structures adsorbed to surfaces

Notes: Luminescent and non-luminescent nano materials are used today in a variety of lighting applications. One example is the thin layer of densely packed nano alumina between glass and phosphor in fluorescent lamps that serves to increase the efficiency, to improve the maintenance and to reduce the mercury consumption of the lamps. Further, non-luminescent nano materials may be used to form a thin conformal coating around phosphor particles that protects the phosphor particles and improves the efficiency and maintenance of fluorescent lamps. Luminescent nano materials have been the subject of extensive research in the last 15 years. For particle sizes below 20 nm, the optical properties of nano phosphors change, e.g. the exciton energy increases and perhaps even more important, scattering decreases. We have synthesized nano Y2O3:Eu of particle sizes down to 10 nm, derived its optical properties, and investigated its use in Hg-free fluorescent lamps based on the Xe-excimer discharge. The possibility of using nano phosphors, e.g.semiconducting nano phosphors as CdSe or rare-earth doped phosphors as LaPO4:RE in LEDs, will be discussed

Notes: Optical communication wavelength emissions from the quantum dots (QDs) structures prepared on (001)-oriented GaAs substrates are discussed. A new growth technique of low-stressed InAs QDs on the AlGaSb layer in a low lattice-mismatched (1.3%) InAs/AlGaSb system is presented. The average height and diameter of the 4-ML InAs QDs on AlGaSb are evaluated to 5.8 nm and 45.2 nm respectively with an average density of 2.18 x 1010 /cm2 using atomic force microscope (AFM) measurements. There is structural selectivity between the QDs layer and the flat hetero-interface under changing growth conditions in the InAs/AlGaSb system. Long-wavelength PL emissions around 1.3 µm and 1.55 µm can be achieved by embedding InAs QDs in AlGaSb layers. Therefore it is expected that low-stressed InAs QDs grown on a AlGaSb layer prepared on a GaAs substrate will be useful in the fabrication of novel QDs devices for optical-communication networks

Notes: We investigated the lasing spectra of multiple scattering active media based on solidpolymer solutions of rhodamin 6G with embedded scattering silica particles of mean diameter 500nm. Lasing in these samples appears without any cavity and arises even in rather small active volume 0.05*0.5*0.5mm3. In a thick sample positive feedback for lasing is provided mainly by multiple scattering of light. In a thin sample the feedback is provided both by multiple scattering of light on the particles and light reflection from the sample surface. It is found that the lasing spectra peak wavelength can be varied within 13nm by varying sample thickness in a range 0.1 -1.65mm. A method of continuos laser tuning by wedge-like sample shift with respect to the pump beam is proposed. The presented results are aimed at the development of a new type of microlaser

Notes: Nanocrystalline powders of Lu2O3:Eu with activator content varying between 0.2%-10% were prepared using four different methods of synthesis. The products differed in their microstructure and crystallites sizes. Combustion of Lu(NO3)3 with urea produced strongly agglomerated material, most probably with significantly non-uniform distribution of the Eu3+ dopant. Replacing urea with glycine for the combustion produced only slightly agglomerated, voluminous, fluffy powder. Applying the Pechini technique resulted in significantly agglomerated powder while the homogeneous precipitation of Lu(OH)3 with urea at 90 °C and its subsequentdecomposition to Lu2O3 at 650 °C resulted in a powder of perfectly spherical particles with a uniform size of about 130 nm with very low agglomeration. The efficiency of X-ray excited luminescence of our nanocrystalline Lu2O3:5%Eu was compared to that of the commercial microcrystalline Gd2O2S:Eu. It was found that the commercial phosphor performed four times more efficiently than our nanocrystalline powder. We consider this to be rather encouraging as thefabrication of our powder is not optimized yet. It seems that Lu2O3:Eu, even in nanocrystalline form, can perform much more efficiently which would make it a promising X-ray phosphor

Notes: The temperature dependence of the photoluminescence (PL) emission spectra ofself-organized InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) grown under different growth conditions in the range 20-300K has been investigated. Three InAs QD samples were grown on (100) 2º-tilted toward (111)A Si-doped GaAs substrates by metal-organic chemical vapour epitaxy (MOVPE), with various size uniformities and dot densities. Observing the measured PL spectra at 20K, the differences caused by size uniformities among the three samples were obvious. The PL spectrawere simulated with rate equations, taking into account the carrier relaxation between the first excited state and the ground state. Interestingly, the calculated relaxation lifetimes at 20K were 198ps, 139ps and 54ps for the samples. The temperature dependent PL spectra were also simulated using the same model. Based on the calculated values of temperature dependent relaxation lifetimes, the differences in changes with temperature among the three samples are discussed. The results are consistent with the thermal redistribution effect

Notes: Templating methods provide an alternative approach for fabricating macroporous solids with three-dimensionally ordered arrays of pores with diameters from tens to hundreds of nanometers. The main goal of this work is the fabrication of thermoelectric-opal composite and inverse opals made of thermoelectric material in order to obtain enhanced performance by reducing the thermal conduction. Chemical bath deposition (CBD) has been employed and thermodynamic modelling was used to obtain optimum conditions for the desired phase of particle formation within the channels of the opal-like structures. The wetting behaviours of opals were considered in the choiceof the appropriate solvents. When loading is finished, the precursor is decomposed and reduced when appropriate. The opal template is then removed by pyrolysis to obtain the macroporous structures. Thestructural properties of materials produced were investigated

Notes: Thermal surface purification in an inert gas flow and densification processes of SiC and diamond nanocrystalline powders with specific surface in the range of 60 – 300 m2/g and average grain sizes from 5 to 15 nm in diameter were examined. Termogravimetric Analysis (TGA) linked with mass spectrometry of outgassing products show that surface impurities desorb at up to 450ºC. Further heating above 450ºC leads to oxidation of the powder surface. Small Angle X-Ray Scattering (SAXS) and gas porosimetry (ASAP) was applied to investigate densification of the nanocrystalline powders. Compaction under 1GPa or higher pressure was found necessary for obtaining the ceramic matrix with porosity in the nanometer range

Notes: TiO2 thin films were prepared by spray pyrolysis method. The solution containingtitanium(IV)isopropoxide, acetylacetone and ethanol was deposited onto n-type Si(100) and HD Si(100) wafers at substrate temperatures of 315 to 500 0C by pulsed spray solution feed. The films were characterized by FTIR, XRD, AFM, ellipsometry, impedance and I-V measurements. Asdeposited films prepared below 500 0C were amorphous, whereas crystalline films could be achieved at 500 0C. Subsequent annealing at 700 °C in air led to crystalline anatase formation for films deposited below 400 °C. Rutile phase appears in annealed films prepared at a growth temperature above 400 °C. Anatase TiO2 films show refractive index in the range 2.20 to 2.40 and exhibit a relative dielectric constant value of 75 in the range 1 to 100 kHz. Electric breakdown occurs for 120 nm thick film at 250 kV/cm

Notes: Preliminary results of Raman scattering measurements of multiwall carbon nanotubes(MWCNT) are presented. The nanotubes have been carefully dissolved, separated and then characterized by AFM. The micro-Raman spectra are taken with 514,5nm wavelength excitations in the range 4K - 400K. Basically the spectra are quite similar to the well known single wall carbon nanotube spectra, but the low frequency band is absent. The major Raman bands, observed in single wall nanotubes are found in the spectra. In particular the disorder effects are visible due to the pronounced D band at ~1350 cm-1. Metallic and semiconducting type of conductivity is distinguished through analysis of the G (LO) mode at ~1600 cm-1. A new feature in these spectra exists at ~843 cm-1. Low energy radial breathing mode absence has been explained

Notes: Autocatalytic chemical reactions may lead to spatio-temporal patterns if processed under non-equilibrium conditions. The patterns disappear when the conditions change and information stored in these non-equilibrium structures is lost since precise reconstructions are impossible. Replication of molecules, in particular of polynucleotides RNA or DNA, is an autocatalytic process too. The storage of information in polynucleotide sequences, however, allows for reconstruction ofthe molecules under suitable conditions. Conservation of information in polymer sequences constitutes the basic difference between chemical and biological self-organization. Evolution of RNA molecules is considered as pattern formation in sequence space, which manifests itself as another pattern in the space of minimum-free-energy structures. In addition, optimization of RNA structures and properties is visualized as an evolutionary trial-and-error process. This process can beinterpreted as a simple form of learning at the level of ensembles or populations of molecules. Evolutionary optimization of RNA molecules occurs in steps: Short adaptive periods are interrupted by long epochs of quasi-stationarity during which the mean replication rate of the populations is essentially constant. Understanding of evolution is largely facilitated through consideration of sequence-structure relation as a many-to-one or non-invertible mapping from sequence space into structure space. Neutrality of sequences with respect to structure formation is highly relevant for evolutionary optimization on rugged fitness landscapes

Notes: There are presented logic gates of molecular electronics digital computers. Maximallength of these molecular electronics digital logic gates are no more than four nanometers and maximal width 2.5 nm. The results of light induced internal molecular motions in azo-dyes molecules have been used for the design of light driven logically controlled (OR, AND) molecular machines composed from organic photoactive electron donor dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]thiophene and ferrocene molecules, electron accepting tetracyano-indane molecule, and moving azo-benzene molecular fragment. Density functional theory (DFT) B3PW91/6-311G model calculations were performed for the geometry optimization of these molecular electronics logical gates. Applied DFT time dependent (DFT-TD/B3PW91) method and our visualization program give absorption spectra of designed molecular gates and show from which fragments electrons are hopping in various excited states.Quantum mechanical investigations of proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) values of Cu, Co, Zn, Mn and Fe biliverdin derivatives and their dimers using ab initio Hartree-Fock (HF) and DFT methods indicate that these modified derivatives should generate from one to twelve Quantum Bits (QuBits). The chemical shifts are obtained as the difference of the values of the tetramethylsilane (Si(CH〈sub〉3〈/sub〉)〈sub〉4〈/sub〉) molecule Gauge-Independent Atomic Orbital (GIAO) nuclear magnetic shielding tensor on the hydrogen atoms and that of the magnetically active molecules. Notes: The adsorption of organic molecules on solid surfaces is one of the fundamentalprocesses for the development of molecular-based nanodevices. Here we focus on the adsorption and ordering of the TPPS〈sub〉4〈/sub〉-based J-aggregates on silicon and gold as well as on self-assembled monolayer (SAM) surfaces. The SAMs used for the experiments were based on the chemisorption of thiol containing compounds onto gold. Long ω-substituted alkanethiols are spontaneously assembled on gold to form highly ordered and densely packed layers with controllable chemical and physical properties.TPPS〈sub〉4〈/sub〉 J-aggregates were dispersed on SAM surfaces, and on plain gold and silicon substrates for comparison. The dimensions of aggregates, measured by means of atomic force microscopy, varied depending on the type of substrate. Long stripe-like aggregates were flattened on the substrate surface, and the height and width of aggregates highly correlated with the polarity of surface groups. For example, the J-aggregates were narrower on hydrophobic substrates (with non-polar groups) and wider on hydrophilic substrates (with polar groups). These observations support the hypothesis, that TPPS〈sub〉4〈/sub〉 forms .soft. cylindrical aggregates, that appear flattened on the substrate

Notes: Xerogels doped with lanthanides embedded in mesoporous matrices are known toexhibit intensive lanthanides-related photoluminescence (PL). In this paper we report on novel features peculiar to porous anodic alumina and Eu-doped xerogels embedded therein. For Eu-doped titania xerogel fabricated in a single spin-on step Eu PL increases with the thickness of porous anodic alumina ranging from 0.5 to 5 μm. The structure Eu-doped titania xerogel/porous anodic alumina reveal anisotropy of luminescence at 617 nm (〈sup〉5〈/sup〉D〈sub〉0〈/sub〉 → 〈sup〉7〈/sup〉F〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 transitions of Eu〈sup〉3+〈/sup〉) with a pronounced maximum towards the channels of the anodic alumina pores. Furthermore, a membrane of porous anodic alumina reveals strong anisotropy of light scattering. Development of these anisotropic properties for the purpose of further PL enhancement of optically active inclusions incorporated in mesoscopic channels of anodic alumina is discussed

Notes: Meso-tetra (4-sulfonatophenyl) porphine (TPPS4) is water-soluble tetrapyrrolic dye,which forms self assembled nanostructures  J-aggregates under appropriate conditions. It wasshown, that such aggregates survive dried on the substrate. The spatial structure of TPPS4 Jaggregatesformed in acidic aqueous solutions and dispersed on silicon substrates was analyzed bymeans of atomic force microscopy (AFM). The stripe-like structures were observed. The size ofindividual stripes ranged 4,5×40×(200-1000) nm (H×W×L). The width and height was almost thesame for all stripes and independent upon the concentration of the solution, however the length wasstatistically distributed and the mean length increased with increasing concentration of initial TPPS4solution. At higher concentrations such stripes stacked into thicker fibers containing 2-20 stripes.Such fibers branched and formed large bush-like structures sized up to several millimeters.According to experimental findings the model of mesostructures, formed by TPPS4 J-aggregates,was proposed

Notes: The thermodynamic properties of the ABO3 perovskite-type compounds are stronglyaffected by the A- and B- site substitution and the oxygen nonstoichiometry. The paper presents the thermodynamic properties of some doped nano- and microstructured lanthanum manganites of general formula La1-xMxMn1-yMeyO3 (where M=Sr, Ca; Me=Al; x=0.3;0.33, y=0;0.05) which have been studied within the temperature range of 873-1273 K in a reducing atmosphere (10-6 Pa). The relative partial molar free energies, enthalpies and entropies of oxygen dissolution in the perovskite phase and the equilibrium partial pressures of oxygen have been obtained by using a solid electrolyte galvanic cell method. The influence of the oxygen stoichiometry change on the thermodynamic properties was examined using the data obtained by a coulometric titration technique coupled with measurements ofthe electromotive force (EMF). The focus of the research was to emphasise modifications of the thermodynamic properties connected with the nanocrystalline state. The results obtained are discussed in relation to significant changes in the overall concentration of defects

Notes: The influence of plasma processing of silica and crystalline silicon substrates on theformation of polymeric layers of PS/PMMA blends by sorption from 50 vol. % concentration toluene solutions was analyzed. The morphology dependence of PS/ PMMA blend films on the type and condition of substrate processing was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ellipsometry and atomic force microscopy (AFM). It was shown that reduction of carbon and oxygencomponents from the surface contaminants as well as the existence of a nonstoichiometric SiOx layer on the Si surface contributed to the hydrophilicity of the substrate. Notes: Special features of the formation and growth of polymer films, formed on steel underthe effect of glow discharge in heptane were studied by means of atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and contact wetting angle. At low film thickness a thin sticky layer is formed, from which macromolecular cone-shaped formations protrude. With an increase in film thickness the sticky layer disappears and the number of cone-shaped formations increase and they eventually coalesce. As the surface coverage with cones increases the films become thicker andstronger. The cones are assumed to be the film growth sites, which arise during the relaxation of the film’s internal stresses. In addition these growth sites can form under the effect of the stresses from extended defects in the substrate

Notes: Applying the Karlsruhe Microwave Plasma Process, alumina and zirconia particles with particle sizes in the range from 2 to 5 nm were synthesized. Additionally, the influence of small amounts of iron(III)-oxide, chromia, and magnesia on the crystallization and phase transitions in alumina powders was investigated. It is shown that these dopants may influence the crystallization behavior significantly. Notes: Silver sodalite crystals with hydroxyl guest anion and silver loading higher than 7.9 per unit cell were investigated. EPR spectra of sodalite, recorded just afer g-irradiation at 77K, shows a 9-line, near isotropic signal with giso=1.987 and hyperfine splitting of 8.3 mT. The signal decays completely above 200K. Notes: The equations of motion are derived for a magnetic planar system with dipolarinteractions taken into account. Magnetostatic waves propagating perpendicularly to the sample surface and dipolar field static and dynamic components are calculated for the case when saturating field is applied perpendicularly to the sample surface. The corresponding frequency spectra and mode profiles are computed numerically with emphasis laid on size effects. It is established that two lowest-frequency modes are surface-localized modes. These modes preserve their surface-localized character with growing sample dimensions

Notes: The structural analysis of thin cerium dioxide films doped with Cu, produced by laserablation for applications in catalytic and gas sensors, was the general aim of the study. The thin films deposited on a (100) silicon substrate were nanocrystalline structure with a well-developed texture. The morphology, as well as the preferred films orientation, is changed with the volume fraction of Cu. Notes: Gallium arsenide coating by molecular layers is a of increasing interest both for itssurface passivation and for its use as a chemical or biochemical sensor. The surface state of GaAs and the nature of the molecular functionality to be bound to the surface are very important to assure good and durable adhesion. This work, using both the vibrational and the electronic energy loss range of high resolution electron energy loss spectra, showed that the water content in the solvent –acetonitrile – has a dramatic effect on the amount of phenylphosphonic acid molecules adsorbed on the GaAs substrate. There is a poor molecular adsorption for water contents ranging from 0 to 4% volume: HREELS spectrum is always a combination of the substrate and the adsorbed molecule spectra. For a water content of 5% there is an abrupt jump in the HREELS spectra shape: they become typical of phenyl groups in the electronic region. In the vibrational region, the typical C-H stretching peaks of aliphatic chains disappear showing that the extreme surface is exclusively covered by phenyl functions. Also for the samples, where a large adsorption occurs, surfaces become negatively charged under electron irradiation showing the existence of a large number of traps for incident electrons. Sonication of such well covered substrates destroys intermolecular bonds but keeps molecules that are chemically bound to the substrate
