    Notes: Summary The plasma protein binding of amitriptyline, imipramine, clomipramine, and their primary demethylated metabolites were studied by means of a method combining dialysis and gas chromatography. Equilibrium in dialysis of serum containing amitriptyline and its metabolite nortriptyline was attained in about 0.5 h with the drug dissolved in the serum compartment, and in about 2 h with the drug passing from the buffer to the serum compartment. The calculation of free fractions was influenced by variations with dialysis time in the volumes of serum and buffer. Increase of pH in serum increased the protein binding of the weakly basic drugs studied, and made the Donnan distribution effects more pronounced. At pH 7.4, the Donnan effect was negligible. Binding parameters for the 6 tricyclic antidepressant substances studied were estimated for the binding to α1-acid glycoprotein and for total binding in serum. For α1-acid glycoprotein, the k-values ranged from 1·105 to 8·105 M−1, and for pooled serum from 0.4·105 to 8·105 M−1. The determined number of binding sites on the α1-acid glycoprotein was, on average 0.87 for the 6 substances. In serum, the binding capacity was 2–14 times the concentration of α1-acid glycoprotein.

    Notes: Abstract Steroid excretion in urine of 12 infants with virilising adrenal tumours has been determined using gas chromatography. In six children, (Group A, five female, one male) aged 2.8–5.3 years, very high urinary excretions of 17 oxosteroids (〉40 μmol/24 h) were largely accounted for by dehydroepiandrosterone (DHA). In one of the girls, the pattern of steroids excreted in urine was similar to that of newborn infants, with high excretions of 16-oxygenated derivatives of DHA. The histology of this tumour suggested a neoplasia of fetal-type adrenocortical cells. Very large tumours were found in three of the infants, two of whom have died and one has multiple metastases. From the other three children, small, well-encapsulated adenomas were successfully removed. Six children (Group B), had moderately elevated 17-oxosteroid exrretions (8–17 μmol/ 24 h). In five of these cases (four female, one male) aged 0.8–5 years, 11β-hydroxyandrosterone was a consistently prominent urinary steroid. In one boy, aged 7.7 years, 17-oxosteroid excretion was 15 μmol/24 h and the major steroids in urine were metabolites of pregnenolone. These six children have survived with no clinical evidence of recurrent tumour. The in vivo functional activities of the tumours can be deduced from the different profiles of steroids in urine. These have revealed heterogeneous patterns of steroid biosynthesis.

    Notes: Abstract The fate of the four stereoisomers of soman [0-(1,2,2-trimethylpropyl)-methyl-fluoro phosphonate] has been studied a) in vivo in mouse blood and liver after IP injection of 0.75 × LD50 Rc- and Sc-soman respectively, and b) in vitro upon incubation wih acetyl- und pseudocholinesterase, aliesterase and phosphorylphosphatase. The analytical method used is based on gas chromatography — mass spectrometry with deuterated internal standard. Most soman disappeared very rapidly from blood and liver. In liver, SCRP and RCRP, the two isomers that preferentially react with cholinesterase, could be detected. The level of SCRP, which was higher than that of RCRP, could be followed for 17–18 h. In blood only SCRP could be detected. The amounts found were fairly constant during the time period 2 min to 4h, and it could even be detected 17–18 h after soman administration.

    Notes: Abstract A gas Chromatographic procedure for the determination of 2-ethoxyethanol (C2H5OCH2CH2OH) was developed by using the general principles of analysis of solvent vapors. 2-Ethoxyethanol was sampled by adsorbing on activated carbon. It was desorbed with carbon disulfide plus 2-propanol (0.5%). The analytical column was packed with 10% free fatty acid phase on Chromosorb-P AW. The analysis was conducted at 130° C isothermal using a flame ionization detector. Addition of 2-propanol (0.5%) to carbon disulfide improved (P≤0.01) desorption of 2-ethoxyethanol adsorbed on activated carbon. The mean desorption efficiency of carbon disulfide plus 2-propanol (0.5%) was 87.9±2.86% (n=15). Based on a 101 air sample and detector sensitivity of 2×10−10AFS, the calculated limit of detection of 2-ethoxyethanol was 0.1 ppm. The precision (coefficient of variation) for this analytical procedure was 3.34% (n=12). In conclusion, 2-ethoxyethanol adsorbed on activated carbon can be desorbed with carbon disulfide plus 2-propanol (0.5%). Subsequently the desorbed 2-ethoxyethanol can be analyzed by gas chromatographic identification on 10% FFAP using a flame ionization detector.

    Notes: Summary A coating of silicone SE-54 on Chromosorb W has been converted to an analytically stable, immobilized stationary phase layer by cross-linking with an organic peroxide. Up to 10% by weight has been applied in this manner. Excellent high temperature qualities are exhibited, such as low bleeding and good base line stability, during typical analyses. Poly (2,6-dimethyl-p-phenylene oxide) has also been crosslinked as a surface coating on Chromosorb W with an organic peroxide. From 3 to 4% by weight has been immobilized in this way. The resultant packing material, following high temperature conditioning, has been examined for use as an adsorbent of trace substances, similar to the applications to which such adsorbents as Tenax GC have commonly been applied, e.g. trace analysis of air. It appears to exhibit satisfactory properties for this analytical purpose.

Esterification in water/n-butanol mixtures with mole ratios between 0.02 and 2.53 can be utilized for the quantitative determination of the dicarboxylic acids by gas chromatography. The presence of water does not interfere at water/n-butanol mole ratios below 0.27. For mole ratios above 0.27 anhydrous sodium sulfate has been used for binding the water. The mole ratio range was 0.25–0.75 for anhydrous sodium sulfate/water, and 0.32–1.3 for sulfuric acid/anhydrous sodium sulfate.

    Notes: Large sample volume on-column injection (up to 250 μL) of n-pentane solutions of halogenated hydrocarbons has been employed for the direct measurement of both low-boiling and high-boiling compounds in what is essentially a single run. Two-bonded phase, fused-silica capillary columns are joined in series, through which the low-boiling compounds are first chromatographed and detected with an electron capture detector. High-boiling compounds are then trapped in a section joining the two columns, and subsequently chromatographed in the second column, using the same detector. This procedure permits analysis at the ppt level.

    Notes: An analytical procedure is described for the fractionation of organic compounds present in environmental samples and the determination of nitro polyaromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAHs). Both low and high resolution liquid chromatography are employed for the prefractionation of the soluble organic fraction (SOF) extracted from particulate matter or gaseous pollutants collected on adsorption traps. High resolution gas chromatography is used to analyze four fractions containing alkanes, PAHs, nitro-PAHs, and other polar PAHs. Nitrogen-containing species are separated by GC and detected specifically using an alkali flame (NPD) detector. Flame ionization (FID) detection, GC-MS of positive ions, and negative ion chemical ionization MS of the whole fraction is used for the identification and quantitation of the various components. The composition of SOF extracted from particulate matter emitted from diesel exhausts is elucidated and a large number of nitro-PAHs identified by the combination of the various techniques.

    Notes: A commercial thermodesorption and cold trap unit can be used as a large sample volume injection device in high resolution gas chromatography. Volumes of more than 100 μl can be injected. More than 97% of solvents, such as hexane, can be removed by a Tenax TA precolumn without any loss of compounds with volatilities comparable to naphthalene. Experimental conditions, recovery rates of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and the reproducibility of the method are described in detail. The method was successfully applied for the determination of PAH in air particulate matter extracts.

    Notes: Quantitative analysis of steroids and their metabolites in urine samples calls for increased speed of sample clean-up, of the derivatization procedure, and of separation. A fast procedure for sample pretreatment, which can be performed within 8 hours, is introduced and evaluated. It is shown that use of fast pretreatment in combination with narrow bore columns, which are compatible with existing instrumentation, can considerably increase, laboratory throughput. The effect of different sample introduction techniques (e.g. splitless, on-column, and moving needle) on column efficiency and resolution is demonstrated and discussed.

The equations found permit calculation of the Kováts retention index for all alkanes, with standard deviations close to experimental error.     Notes: An HETP equation for the capillary column is developed that takes into account the dependence of gaseous diffusion on pressure, the compressibility of the mobile phase, together with the unique relationship between mobile phase velocity, and the resistance to mass transfer in the stationary phase. The equation is used to develop a procedure for column optimization and expressions are derived that allow the optimum column radius and optimum column length to be calculated for a given fixed inlet pressure. It is shown that fast, simple separations are optimally achieved using relatively short small diameter columns. Conversely, optimum performance for the separation of complex mixtures requiring higher efficiencies requires the use of long columns with relatively large diameters.

    Notes: The purge and trap (P&T) method of analysis has been interfaced with fused silica capillary column gas chromatography. This interfacing has been accomplished without splitting the P&T trap desorption carrier gas. Thus, 100% of the purged compounds are transferred to the column. The analytes are cryofocussed on the column using whole column cryotrapping (WCC) at -80°C. The resulting P&T/WCC procedure is extremely well-suited to the analysis of trace purgeable aqueous organic compounds. Samples and standards containing a variety of aromatic standard compounds were analyzed. The standards included benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, C3-C4-benzenes, and naphthalene, as well as three P&T internal standard compounds. Chromatographic peak widths were uniformly less than 6 s at the base and excellent precision was obtained in the relative retention time data for all compounds. The chromatogram of a groundwater sample contaminated with aromatic gasoline compounds is also presented. Since P&T/WCC works well with fused silica capillary columns, the full sensitivity and chromatographic efficiency of capillary gas chromatography is made available to P&T analyses.

    Notes: The environmentally hazardous organic substances in the waste water from the manufacture of chlorophenoxyalkanoic acids have been identified and semiquantified before and after passing through a biological treatment plant for municipal sewage, the secondary effluent of which is discharged into a marine ecosystem. The organics belong to three groups: (i) chlorophenols; (ii) chlorophenoxyalkanoic acids; and (iii) chlorinated neutrals. The removal of chlorophenols and phenoxyalkanoic acids was shown to be good, with a 90% overall reduction of chlorinated substances in the sewage passing through the treatment plant. The lowest reduction occurred for the polychlorinated compounds. Two chlorobenzofurans among the chlorinated neutrals were preliminarily identified.

    Notes: Although chlorinated paraffins (CP) are produced in large amounts (300 000 tonnes per year), little is known about their occurrence in the environment due to the lack of specific and sensitive analytical methods. The present paper describes the GC/MS analysis of different CP's using capillary gas chromatography with on-column injection and negative ion chemical ionization (NCI) mass spectrometry. Chromatographic resolution of groups of isomers and homologues was obtained. The chromatograms and mass spectra are discussed. The suitability of this method for trace analysis of a CP sample using multiple ion detection (MID) is described.

    Notes: A method is described which allows the determination of different substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) such as NO2-PAH, carbazoles, keto-PAH, and aza-arenes in aerosol samples. Liquid CO2-extraction is used to minimize the loss of reactive compounds. High performance liquid chromatography on chemically activated silica is employed to prefractionate the samples into subfractions with a minimum of overlap between different PAH compound classes. Both electron capture detection and negative ion chemical ionization combined with capillary gas chromatography are used for identification and quantification. The latter method also allows distinction between isomers with different toxic properties when N2O/CH4 reaction gas mixtures are used. Selectivity for tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxins as against pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls can be improved by this technique. The applicability of the method is critically discussed and different examples are given.

Derivatization is performed in aqueous solution with n-butanol in the presence of sulfuric acid. The butyl esters of benzoic, phthalic, hemimellitic, trimellitic, trimesic and pyromellitic acids permit their gas chromatographic separation from each other and from fatty acids and alipatic dicarboxylic acids. At mole ratios of [H2O]/ [n-BuOH]≤0.04 the water present does not interfere with the esterification reaction. At mole ratios above 0.04 anhydrous sodium sulfate is used for binding the water, at mole ratios of [Na2SO4 anh.]/[H2O]=0.25–0.75.

    Notes: Summary A specific, sensitive and general applicabla gas chromatographic method is described for the determination of parabens in various liquid pharmaceutical preparations: propylparaben and butylparaben in a liquid antacid dosage form (I); methylparaben, ethylparaben and propylparaben in a syrup (II); methylparaben and propylparaben in a solution for injection (III). Each time one of the parabens is used as internal standard. The parabens are extracted with diethylether and derivatized by silylation. Different columns are used for the analysis of the parabens: 3% SE-30 column, a 3% QF-1 column for different selectivity, a 2% OV-1 column for isothermal operation. Special attention is attributed to the standard: the parabens are dissolved in a minimal amount of 0.1 M sodium hydroxide and extracted in the same way as the pharmaceutical dosage form.

    Notes: If a stationary phase A employed in gas chromatography possesses a chemical affinity for substance B, which is to be separated, then the retention behavior is not only determined by the normal physical equilibrium between the gas and liquid phases but also by the chemical equilibrium A + B ⇋ AB. If A and B are chiral and A is present in optically active form while B is a racemic mixture, then it is possible to achieve a gas chromatographic enantiomer resolution without the isolation of diastereomers: the energetically different diastereomeric associates AR BR and AR BS are formed rapidly and reversibly. This enantiospecific resolution principle was first demonstrated in 1966 by the quantitative resolution of racemic amino acid derivatives on optically active peptide phases in analogy to the well-known stereospecificity of enzymes. The anchoring of the chiral resolving agent to thermally stable polysiloxanes together with the employment of high resolution capillary columns and the use of appropriate derivatization strategies has led to the development of enantiomer resolution into a routine modern method for many classes of substances. The demonstration of enantiospecificity in the gas chromatographic separation process is of fundamental interest, and its systematic study can result in a significant contribution to the understanding of the molecular mechanism of “chiral recognition”. The gas chromatographic separation of enantiomers has also proven to be an accurate and sensitive method for the determination of the enantiomeric composition of natural products and products of enantioselective transformations (asymmetric syntheses, “chiral pool” transformations, kinetic resolutions, biomimetic reactions) and for the quantification of racemization, e.g. in the synthesis and hydrolysis of peptides. In any research program devoted to the phenomenon of chirality, the gas chromatographic separation of the enantiomers of volatile compounds constitutes an indispensable modern instrumental technique.

    Notes: A unique capillary die was designed which made possible the measurement of extrusion pressure at various locations along the capillary length. Entrance pressure drops, exit pressures, and other rheological characteristics were determined for the flow of poly(ethylene terephthalate) through this extrusion apparatus. The effect of die entrance angle, extrusion temperature, throughput rate and polymer molecular weight were considered. Two samples differing in molecular weight exhibited power-law behavior at shear rates below 1000s-1. The entrance pressure drops and exit pressures were observed to increase with increasing molecular weight; furthermore, at a specific temperature, both-increased with increasing shear rate. The values for entrance pressure drop obtained using Bagley analysis were consistently higher than those obtained from direct measurements.

    Notes: The determination of charge storage and charge decay processes in polyethylene electrets by means of TSD techniques alone seems to be limited by deficiencies in resolving power and reproducibility. Therefore, in the present work, we describe a new differential technique which cancels the effects of parasitic currents and improves the reproducibility of the measurements. The dependence of the shape of thermograms on experimental poling conditions has been studied. The comparison of discharge currents from the differential technique and from the usual one has also been found to be an interesting means of investigating the charge decay processes.

The homogeneity of the thin films is very high, but it decreases when the film thickness is increased. Scanning electron microscopy shows that the nature of the dopant strongly influences the film morphology. Transmission electron microscopy reveals mainly a fibrillar structure, with a fibril diameter of 200 Å in the undoped state, and 800 Å in the doped conducting state.

    Notes: The changes in the structure and morphology of a random copolymer containing 92 mol % glycolide units and 8 mol % lactide units as a function of in vitro hydrolysis have been studied. A number of techniques, such as wide-angle x-ray diffraction, small-angle x-ray scattering, density measurements, infrared spectroscopy, and viscometry were employed in this study. The results showed that the hydrolytic attack was initiated in the amorphous areas of the polymer. After 28 days in the in vitro medium most of the amorphous areas had been chemically converted to lower-molecular-weight species such as oligomers of poly(glycolide-co-lactide). These low-molecular-weight species become water solble and are removed rapidly after day 28. Thus the fiber takes on a Swiss cheese character as the amorphous matter is hydrolyzed and eventually dissolved. As hydrolysis proceeds further, the crystalline areas of the polymer are attacked and eventually removed from the fiber by solubilization. The resulting voids in the fiber are eventually filled by a “collapse” of the structure. The role of the amorphous areas of the polymer in controlling the tensile strength of the suture is discussed.

    Notes: It has been found that flow-induced coalescence occurs at a very rapid rate during the mixing of polymeric fluids. Furthermore, the rheological properties of the dispersed and continuous phases, as well as the nature of the flow field used in their blending, can greatly influence this coalescence. The significance of these findings is that in the development of a mixing scheme to obtain a desired morphology with minimum expenditure of time or energy, attention is usually focused only on the particle breakup aspects of the blending process. The competing coalescence can, however, be accelerated by the same conditions often employed to facilitate particle breakup (e.g., higher shear rates, reduced dispersed-phase viscosity).A better understanding of the mechanism for coalescence of viscoelastic fluids is clearly required. In this manner optimal blending of immiscible polymers can be achieved with respect to both the nature of the final material and the ease with which it is obtained.

    Notes: Broad-line NMR measurements have been carried out on solid amylose, pullulan, and dextran in order to shed light upon the relations between different modes of linkage of glucose residues and physical properties. Rotation of the methylol group attached to the C5 atom around the C5—C6 linkage and the libration of glucose residues around the α-1,6 linkage are suggested as the origins of the observed decrease of the second moment with increasing temperature.

    Notes: Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) studies of polystyrene (PS)/poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) blends are presented. Both compatible (one-phase) and phase-separated blends were studied. In the case of compatible PS/PVME blends, there is strong evidence for molecular interactions. The interaction spectrum was obtained by digital subtraction techniques. In contrast, no interaction is detected for the phase-separated blends. In view of these results, molecular interactions must play a role in the compatibility of the two polymers. The merits of factor analysis and least-squares fit methods, as pertaining to our data, are also discussed.

    Notes: Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) (intrinsic viscosity 0.59) and cellulose (Whatman) are compatible in up to 7.5% (w/v) solutions in trifluoroacetic acid and in mixtures of trifluoroacetic acid and methylene chloride. Evaporation of the solutions yielded films that did not contain cellulose per se, but rather partial esters of cellulose and trifluoroacetic acid. Clear films were cast from these solutions with compositions of 100/0, 75/25, 50/50, 25/75, and 0/100 PET. cellulose (w/w). Infrared spectra and DSC measurements indicate specific polymer-polymer interaction although two Tg were observed. Hydrolysis of the trifluoroacetate films to blends of PET and regenerated cellulose was accomplished by suspending the films in water at the boil. Infrared spectra indicate no interaction between the two polymers, although the films of the 50/50 and 25/75 PET. cellulose compositions were clear. The 25/75 composition, from its Tg and melting-point behavior appears to be a dispersion of very small-particle PET in a cellulose matrix. The 75/25 composition became opalescent during the hydrolysis and may be a dispersion of large-particle cellulose in a PET matrix. The regenerated cellulose appears to be a mixture of cellulose II and IV polymorphs.

    Notes: Wide-line NMR has been used in an investigation of noncrystalline (amorphous) regions in oriented semicrystalline polymers. Nylon 6 was chosen as a model material. The tie-chain length distribution function, the fraction of tie chains in the total number of chains in the crystallite cross section, and the relative number of taut tie chains have been determined. The data on the tie-chain length distribution are used in discussing specific features of vitrification of the amorphous regions in oriented polymers and in prediction macroscopic mechanical properties.

    Notes: The crystallization of highly oriented homopolymer melts (or glasses) is modeled. It is shown that in such cases heat flow controls the kinetics and microstructure of the transforming material. The situation is modeled similarly to the growth of a thermal dendrite, with the inclusion of large and variable concentrations of defects in the fibrillar crystals. Expressions relating the undercooling, growth velocity, filament tip radius, and defect concentration to a normalized tensile force are derived. Example predictions for the case of isotactic polystyrene are given.

    Notes: Phase diagrams of low-molecular-weight polyethylene (M = 1000, 2000, 6500, 16,000) and polyethylene (M ≈ 1,000) after fuming nitric acid treatment have been determined from 20 to 300°C up to pressures of about 10 kbar. The fractions with molecular weights 1000 and 2000 do not exhibit the hexagonal phase, but the others do. Effects of molecular weight and fuming nitric acid treatment on the phase diagrams are discussed in terms of the entropy of the melt.

    Notes: Single-crystal x-ray diffraction analysis is performed on a model compound (bisurethane of diphenylmethane-4-monoisocyanate and butanediol-1,4) for the thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) hard segment formed from diphenylmethane-4,4′-diisocyanate and butanediol-1,4. The resulting structure is compared to structure models of corresponding TPU hard segments, especially to the structure proposed by Blackwell and Ross. Our results confirm this structure model showing a planar zigzag of the (CH2)4 group and planar hydrogen bonding between the urethane groups of adjacent molecules. X-ray diffraction analyses of polymeric TPU hard segments and of TPU elastomers with noncrystallizing soft segments lead to a revision of the dimensions of the proposed lattice cell, resulting in a more plausible value of 1.3226g/cm3 for the crystal density.

    Notes: Attention is called to an early observation of Case II diffusion kinetics during penetration of a liquid into a uniaxially prestretched polymer film along the axis of stretching. Application of a previously developed transverse differential swelling stress model to these experimental conditions is described. It is shown that the model can predict Case II diffusion kinetics in a physically meaningful manner and will also explain the transition of the kinetics of the above system into normal or hindered diffusion regimes as either the degree of stretching or its direction relative to that of penetration is changed.

    Notes: The temperature, strain-rate, and pressure dependences of the yield stress have been determined for two polyethylene homopolymers of differing molecular weights and for a polyethylene copolymer. Samples were prepared by slowly cooling from the melt, and also by quenching in order to assess the effects of morphology on the yield behavior. The data have been analyzed on the basis of two Eyring processes acting in parallel. Comparison of all data sets reveals the existence in general of three distinct activated processes each with its own temperature, strain-rate, and pressure dependences. The relative contribution of each process is dependent on the molecular weight, morphology, etc. Also discussed is the relation of these three yield processes to the well-known loss processes of linear viscoelasticity.

    Notes: The effect of diluents and temperature on segmental motion in poly(vinyl acetate) was investigated by both NMR and ESR spectroscopy. Three classes of diluents were studied: chloroform, a thermodynamically good solvent; water, a poor solvent which slightly swells the polymer and lowers its glass transition temperature; and decane, a nonsolvent so poor it does not appear to swell the polymer nor lower the calorimetric glass transition temperature. At all temperatures investigated each type of diluent increased the segmental motion of the polymer over that of the bulk sample. Under the conditions studied, 13C and 2H NMR and nitroxide spin-label ESR data gave similar views of segmental motion of the polymer, indicating that in this amorphous polymer the segmental motion of the polymer may be safely inferred from spin-label data.

    Notes: Poly(tetramethyl-p-silphenylene siloxane) crystal mats initially prepared from benzene/methanol (2:1 v/v), when annealed in small amounts of solvent undergo considerable thickening in the chain direction. When the crystals are annealed above their formation temperature, their physical properties change rapidly at first before reaching an asymptotic limit commensurate with annealing time and type of solvent. Changes in melting temperature, heat of fusion, small-angle x-ray spacing, and wide-angle x-ray scattering patterns have been monitored for three solvents of varying solvent power, ranging from very good to extremely poor. Upon solution annealing, the original crystals mats equilibrate to more stable dimensions compatible with their environment. The activation energy of crystal thickening in contact with a liquid is estimated to be about an order of magnitude lower than that deduced from dry annealing data. It appears that the crystal surface and the crystalline core of the crystals comprising the mats must participate in the measured severalfold increase in long period noted after annealing. The lower surface (or interfacial) energy of the liquid annealed mats compared to isothermally melt-crystallized polymer of similar molecular weight has a direct bearing on the polymer morphology and crystallinity.

    Notes: Previous interpretations of gas transport data in crosslinked networks have been hindered by an inability to accurately control and evaluate the network parameters. We have recently prepared a series of model networks by reacting poly(propylene glycol) with a triisocyanate crosslinking agent. The poly(propylene glycol)s had narrow molecular weight distributions and average molecular weights between 425 and 3000, so the resulting networks had uniform average molecular weights between crosslinks. Hydrogen and carbon monoxide permeabilities in membranes formed from these networks increase with decreasing crosslink density. These results indicate increased cooperative molecular motions in the networks with longer average chain lengths between crosslinks. Increasing the average molecular weight between crosslinks also reduces the discrimination between these two gases so that the separation factors decrease. For networks prepared from mixtures of poly(propylene glycol)s with different molecular weights the gas permeabilities (but not the separation factors) depend on the molecular weight distribution.

    Notes: The effects of poling temperature on piezoelectricity and its thermal stability were investigated on the basis of the thermal molecular motion associated with the crystalline region. This was done by using a film of highly oriented poly(vinylidene fluoride) containing form-I crystals. The film was prepared by a zone-drawing apparatus of the forced-quenching type. The piezoelectric stress constant e31 is a monotonically increasing function of the poling temperature which becomes steeper above ca. 320 K and again at ca. 400 K. The degree of orientation of the crystal b axis generated by poling also increases more steeply with poling temperature above ca. 320 K and again at 400 K. These temperatures correspond, respectively, to the crystalline dispersion temperature at 11 Hz, designated as αc, and the initiation temperature Tpm of large-scale molecular motion corresponding to premelting of form-I crystals. Thus the effect of poling temperature on piezoelectricity closely reflects the moleculer motion in form-I crystals. The annealing temperature T'a at which e31 decreases to 70% of that of unannealed sample by annealing a poled sample increases with the poling temperature and again this increase is steeper above poling temperatures of ca. 320 K and ca. 400 K. Thus the decay of piezoelectricity depends on both the αc temperature and Tpm.

    Notes: The probability W(t) that a given number t of segments of an infinite chain lie within a given sphere can be expressed in terms of the single-pass length probability and the probability of reentrance into the sphere. The problem of calculating these two probabilities is equivalent to that of a diffusing particle exiting or entering the sphere after a given time, when the surface of the sphere is an absorbing wall. It is shown that the boundary condition, c = 0, usually applied to an absorbing surface cannot be used for the present purpose. The boundary condition used instead is the so-called radiation condition ∂c/∂z = kc; it is shown that when k approaches infinity the final answer for W(t), which is given in the form of an infinite series, approaches the correct limit. In this same limit the ratio 〈t〉2/〈t〉2 has the value 2.4

    Notes: A new chlorination mechanism has been suggested for polyethylene crystals. Based on electron microsocopy and infrared spectroscopy of chlorinated high-density polyethylene single crystals, it is proposed that beyond the initial chlorination of the lamellae surfaces, which accounts for only 2-3% chlorine uptake, the reaction proceeds through the lamellar side faces from the periphery inward. Thus at intermediate degrees of chlorination two major phases coexist: the undamaged interior regions of the lamellae and the surrounding chlorinated material. This mechanism differs from that of oxidative degradation, and also from the generally Accepted mechanism of chlorination. Rather than proceeding through the reacted fold surface into the crystalline core, it is proposed that the direction of chemical attack is prependicular to that suggested previously. This mechanism probably describes any chemically nondestructive attack on the crystalline regions of polymers in general.
