Photo-cycloadditions of Thiones to 1.2-Dienes, 1.3-Dienes, and to Electron-deficient Olefines3(n,π*)-Thiones 1a, b and 22 combine with tetramethylallene to produce the thietanes 2a, b, and 8-10, respectively, by way of diradical intermediates 14 and 15. Substrates 1a and b also form open-chain thioethers 3a and b in competing thermal reactions. n →; π* as well as π → π* excitation of 22 in the presence of 2.4-dimethyl-1.3-pentadiene yields the same 88:12 mixture of 9 and 10, thus indicating a common reactive excited state. Irradiation of 1a in the presence of the same 1.3-diene produces 16 and 17; and irradiation of 22 in presence of 2.3-dimethyl-1.3-butadiene leads to the adducts 18 and 19. With fumaric and maleic ester the 3(n,π*) state of 22 produces a mixture of spiranes 23 and 24. Surprisingly, 1(π,π*)-22 undergoes stereospecific cycloaddition to maleic ester to give the cis-thietane 24, as shown by a quenching experiment. Similarly 1b combines with maleic ester to give a mixture of 25, 26, and fumaric ester, the ratio of which depends on the wavelength of the irradiation. Spectroscopic data of the adducts, 3(n,π*)- and 1(π,π*)-reactivities of the thiones, and orbital representations of their intermolecular [2 + 2] photo-cycloadditions are discussed.
Notes:
